[Bug 1048755] Re: 0b95:1780 Connection errors with asix driver on Linux 2.6.39+

2013-10-14 Thread imagine
Sorry I'll not be able to do another round of upstream testing. The
machine where the USB network adapters are connected to is in a
production environment, so it'll be much cheaper for the customer to use
kernel 2.6.38 as long as possible and then simply get rid of those
adapters, instead of scheduling another downtime and maintenance work.
Thank you anyway.

[Bug 1066834] [NEW] LevelForFileTypesDetection=0 produces unexpected results

2012-10-15 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

When setting LevelForFileTypesDetection=0 in the Awstats config file, Awstats
starts to count every hit as a page load, ie the number of Hits and Pages
in the Awstats report is identical. In other words, the Pages statistics
becomes meaningless. This was not happening with older versions of Awstats,
there must have been a change in version 7.0.
While this may not be a bug, it would be good if it's documented somewhere that
LevelForFileTypesDetection must be set to 2 even if you turn ShowFileTypesStats
off. Currently the documentation only says that leaving
LevelForFileTypesDetection=2 reduces Awstats speed by 1%, so users who don't
use/need the file types report might be tempted to turn it off.

** Affects: awstats (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1048755] Re: Connection errors with asix driver on Linux 2.6.39+

2012-09-11 Thread imagine
Sorry, I was too quick with my original bug report. Testing over night
has shown that while kernel versions 2.6.39, 3.0 and 3.1 showed no
dropped packets, the connection was still unstable. I have rewritten the
report accordingly. If this is not a good idea, then I can also create a
new report and close this one as invalid.

I'm afraid I don't really have the time to open and follow this bug
upstream.

[Bug 1048755] [NEW] Connection errors with asix driver in Linux 3.2+

2012-09-10 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

This bug report is similar to bug #947723, but is not solved with kernel
3.2.0-30.48.

I upgraded a router from Natty to Precise. This router has 2 real network
cards (Intel Realtek based) and 2 USB-Ethernet adapters (Level1 USB-0201)
that are using the asix driver.
After the upgrade I noticed erratic connection problems with one of asix
devices and the line kernel: [133466.272231] asix 1-6:1.0: eth2: link up,
100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1 was appearing every 5-30 minutes in the
syslog. After some time the same problem also started happening with the second
asix device. The connection basically works, but every once in a while no data
is received anymore for about one minute. The Realtek and Intel network cards
do not show any problems.

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0b95:1780 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88178

The ouput of ifconfig looks like this for the asix devices:
RX packets:371695 errors:19 dropped:140772 overruns:0 frame:2
TX packets:431601 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

Additionally when running tcpdump on the asix devices, every incoming
packet is followed by a line 19:41:12.355857 6b:f0:34:24:68:ef
3e:00:c1:ff:00:11, ethertype Unknown (0xbd58), length 66:. The *actual*
MAC address of this asix device is 00:11:6b:f0:34:24, which are the last
2 numbers of the receiver and the first 4 numbers of the sender in the
tcpdump output.

I downloaded the drivers from the Asix website
(http://www.asix.com.tw/FrootAttach/driver/AX88772B_772A_760_772_178_LINUX_Driver_v4.4.0_Source.zip),
compiled them and copied the resulting module asix.ko into
/lib/modules/3.2.0-30-generic/kernel/drivers/net/usb/ depmod -a
modprobe asix. By changing this single file the problem disappeared.
When loading this driver the line kernel: [ 1414.449529] wan2: rxqlen 0
-- 5 is printed to the syslog, in case this has any meaning.

I also tried various other kernels:
With the latest kernel from Oneiric
(http://ubuntu.mirror.cambrium.nl/ubuntu//pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-3.0.0-25-generic_3.0.0-25.41_amd64.deb),
 the problem does NOT appear.
With kernel 3.1.10
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1.10-precise/linux-image-3.1.10-030110-generic_3.1.10-030110.201201181135_amd64.deb)
 the problem does NOT appear.
With mainline kernel 3.6rc5
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6-rc5-quantal/linux-image-3.6.0-030600rc5-generic_3.6.0-030600rc5.201209082035_amd64.deb)
the problem DOES appear. So the mainline kernel is affected as well.
The precise kernel (3.2.0-30.48) is of course causing the problem too.

So the offending change must have been introduced with Linux 3.2. I can
also try other kernels if necessary, however since this is a machine in
production it can take a while.

+

+ Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0b95:1780 ASIX Electronics Corp. AX88178
+ Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0b95:1780 ASIX Electronics Corp.

I downloaded the drivers from the Asix website

compiled them and copied the resulting module asix.ko into
  /lib/modules/3.2.0-30-generic/kernel/drivers/net/usb/ depmod -a
modprobe asix. By changing this single file the problem disappeared.
When loading this driver the line kernel: [ 1414.449529] wan2: rxqlen 0
-- 5 is printed to the syslog, in case this has any meaning.

I also tried various other kernels:

[Bug 78043] Re: udev stops pppd persist working

2012-02-23 Thread imagine
I use the workaround presented in posting #8 successfully in Ubuntu
10.04 and 10.10. So it's not without effect. I can't comment on why it
doesn't work in your situation though. Maybe you forgot to change the
connection names from ppp1 and ppp2 to whatever you use.

In any way, your root problem of a timing out ppp connection is
unrelated to this bug. A faulty modem or an unstable line could be the
cause for that. Also LCP terminated by peer suggests that the
connection was closed by the remote side (after more than 8 days).

[Bug 870648] [NEW] do-release-upgrade doesn't honor apt settings

2011-10-08 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

When performing an upgrade with 'do-release-upgrade', some settings in
'/etc/apt.conf' and '/etc/apt.conf.d/' are not honored. At the end of
the upgrade process, 'do-release-upgrade' offers to autoremove
automatically installed packages, that are no longer needed. However,
although I have 'APT::Get::Purge true;' set in 'apt.conf', 'do-
release-upgrade' doesn't purge the packages, but only removes them.

This happens on the upgrade from Maverick to Natty and also all previous
upgrades.

2011-09-02 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 apt-listchanges is displaying the
changes of every updated package when running apt-get dist-upgrade.
However I have set which=news in /etc/apt/listchanges.conf (which is
also the default value). In earlier versions of Ubuntu this setting
worked as expected and apt-listchanges was only displaying new entries

[Bug 78043] Re: udev stops pppd persist working

2010-10-12 Thread imagine
The documentation of the ppp package suggests that using
/etc/ppp/pppoe_on_boot (or ppp_on_boot for the matter) is deprecated and
users should instead set up the PPP connections in
/etc/network/interfaces as auto. The init-script which used this file
in the past also doesn't exist anymore as far as I can see. So posting
#8 looks more like a workaround than a solution for the problem.

Another workaround would be to exclude the PPP connections from being
killed by Upstart by changing the post-stop action in /etc/init/network-
interface.conf to something like:

post-stop script
if [ $INTERFACE != ppp1 -a $INTERFACE != ppp2 ]; then
exec ifdown --allow auto $INTERFACE
fi
end script

However this is completely untested.
Be aware that up to and including Ubuntu 10.04, network-interface.conf is not
set up as a configuration file in DPKG and therefore gets overwritten at each
update without further notice.

[Bug 509528] [NEW] Security manager breaks session listing

2010-01-19 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat6

The current settings of the security manager in /etc/policy.d/ do not allow to
list the active sessions in the Tomcat Web Application Manager.
Steps to reproduce:
* Install tomcat6-admin including dependencies
* Open Tomcat Web Application Manager (default location
http://localhost:8080/manager/html/)
* Try to open the session list of an application
* Instead of seeing the sessions administration, a
java.security.AccessControlException error occurs (example stacktrace is
attached)

This was tested on Karmic with Tomcat version 6.0.20-2ubuntu2 and
openjdk-6-jre-headless 6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1.

To fix this add the following rules to the security manager settings (not
thoroughly tested):
grant {
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
accessClassInPackage.org.apache.catalina;
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
accessClassInPackage.org.apache.catalina.manager;
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission

Steps to reproduce:
* Install tomcat6-admin including dependencies
* Open Tomcat Web Application Manager (default location
http://localhost:8080/manager/html/)
* Try to open the session list of an application
* Instead of seeing the sessions administration, a
java.security.AccessControlException error occurs (example stacktrace is
attached)

This was tested on Karmic with Tomcat version 6.0.20-2ubuntu2 and
openjdk-6-jre-headless 6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1.

To fix this add the following rules to the security manager settings (not
thoroughly tested):
grant {
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
accessClassInPackage.org.apache.catalina;
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
accessClassInPackage.org.apache.catalina.manager;
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
accessClassInPackage.org.apache.catalina.manager.util;
}

[Bug 475480] Re: xtables 1.17-1 fails to build against 2.6.31

2010-01-18 Thread imagine
I can confirm this bug. The issue is also documented in the upstream changelog:
http://xtables-addons.git.sf.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=xtables-addons/xtables-addons;a=blob;hb=master;f=doc/changelog.txt
Support for Linux 2.6.31, which is the default kernel of Karmic, is only
introduced in version 1.18. So either please upgrade the package from version
1.17 to 1.18 or above, or remove it from the Karmic repository, because
currently it cannot be used at all and only leads to confusion.

This is a bug in the software itself, not about the packaging, so I
guess it can be reported upstream.

[Bug 358703] [NEW] Wrong/insecure configuration of PHP module

2009-04-09 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libapache2-mod-php5

The Apache directives inside /etc/apache2/mods-available/php5.conf are both
wrong and insecure. The relevant lines are:
---
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .phtml .php3
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
---

1. 'AddType' is an Apache directive to configure the mime-type of files
for the CLIENT side. However PHP is executed at the SERVER side, hence
'AddHandler' or 'SetHandler' must be used instead.

2. In my experience users running Apache with mod_php expect that only
files ending with .php, .phtml or .php3 will be processed by the PHP
interpreter. However the 'AddType' directives above will enable PHP for
all files CONTAINING .php, .phtml or .php3. For example also
'file.php.something' will be executed on the server as long as it
contains PHP code [1].

Upstream has updated its documentation [2] some months ago to correct those
problems and now states:
---
Tell Apache to parse certain extensions as PHP. For example, let's have Apache
parse .php files as PHP. Instead of only using the Apache AddType directive, we
want to avoid potentially dangerous uploads and created files such as
exploit.php.jpg from being executed as PHP. Using this example, you could have
any extension(s) parse as PHP by simply adding them. We'll add .phtml to
demonstrate.
FilesMatch \.php$
  SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
/FilesMatch
[...]
---

Please change /etc/apache2/mods-available/php5.conf accordingly. As far
as I know this bug exists in all versions of libapache2-mod-php5 and is
therefore true for all Ubuntu versions.

[Bug 358723] [NEW] awstats.pl does not close table row

2009-04-09 Thread imagine
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: awstats

If the parameter 'ShowDaysOfWeekStats' in the configuration of awstats
is not configured to display the bandwidth (ie the vlue 'B' is not set)
then awstats.pl fails to produce valid (X)HTML, which in turn makes the
generated awstats-report unusable. Patch for /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl
(package version 6.7.dfsg-5.1) is below, however this bug exists also in
newer versions of awstats.
