[Bug 498182] [NEW] Indicator-application does not support vertical panels

2009-12-18 Thread mac_v
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-application

the indicator works only with horizontal panels and when vertical panel
is used only the messaging menu is displayed , the rhythmbox icon is
missing , it took me a while to realize that the icon was hidden out of
the screen area.

Before this bug is closed as a wont fix[like the other indicator-*
applets ] , we need to remember that this isnt just one icon or menu ,
but since there are plans to include several menus and use this as
collection of menus , the menus are just getting hidden. With the
indicator-messages and the indicator-session , they were single menus
and atleast a portion of the menu was visible and usable, which is not
possible here.

[Bug 498195] [NEW] Rhythmbox menu icon doesnt change indicating the player state

2009-12-18 Thread mac_v
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-application

Rhythmbox menu icon does not change icon , indicating the player state.

Previously with the notification area the icon used to change wrt to
player state , if the player is playing music it uses the icon
Rhythmbox and when paused , the icon used is the rhythmbox-
notplaying

This is a regression from the previous behavior.
Where the player state was easy to recognize.

Attaching a screenshot.

[Bug 498203] Re: Session starts without any window manager

2009-12-18 Thread mac_v
chrisccoulson mac_v - you're restoring from a saved session which seems to be
broken

file or directory)
chrisccoulson that's the wrong restart command for compiz ;)
mac_v chrisccoulson: ever since , I installed Lucid on a separate partition
... I'm using same /home for both lucid and karmic
chrisccoulson mac_v - that's why
chrisccoulson what has happened is, you've saved a session in karmic (where
compiz set the restart command to /usr/bin/compiz.real)
chrisccoulson and then tried to restore it in lucid, where
/usr/bin/compiz.real no longer exists
mac_v chrisccoulson: ah.. ok , how do i remove it?
chrisccoulson mac_v - you can just delete
~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session

Thanks to Chris , the problem is fixed here...

But chris mentions :
chrisccoulson mac_v - cool. it's still a bug though, as it will break in the
same way on upgrade for anybody using session saving
chrisccoulson i'm just wondering if gnome-session should check the existence
of the executable when loading saved session info , to handle things like
upgrades

Hence , I'v not closed the bug.

2009-12-16 Thread mac_v
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- Though this needs to be addressed , Writing a new daemon is not a papercut
task.

Re: Google Chromium In Lucid

2009-12-15 Thread mac_v
On Mon, 2009-12-14 at 00:18 +, Shane Fagan wrote:
I do agree that it would be pretty rash to jump on this for Lucid+1,
unless something amazing happens, because Chromium is really very new.
Development on Lucid+2 would begin a bit after ChromeOS's official
appearance in the real world. At that point Chromium would be thoroughly
tested and debugged. We could confidently expect Google's ongoing
commitment to the browser's Linux version, in particular, as a stable
  product.

I think it would be worthwhile if there was a commitment to properly
discuss the default browser choice awhile planning Lucid+2, or something
along those lines. It could act as strong incentive for Mozilla to do
better where Firefox currently loses to Chromium in Linux. With that,
the geniuses at Mozilla could pull a rabbit out of a hat, returning
their browser to its rightful place in my heart :)

I disagree because gnome 3 is coming in lucid+1 (probably) I think the
opportune time would be then. We should redesign in one swoop and I
think because Chrome OS is coming I think the browser will have a lot of
 eyes on the code.

With gnome3 I would say it should be considered even less. ;)

Chrome [maximized] is designed to work well when there is no panel at
the top. Seems it was designed keeping in mind only Windows and
ChromeOS.

When there is no top panel the user can hit the top edge of the
screen[event though there is gap of a few pixels above the tabs] and
change tabs, this is a good design when considered for Windows and
ChromeOS.
But this is obviously not possible in Linux since we use a panel at the
top.

Placing the tabs higher isnt a great design for Linux , as the tabs are
now further away from the user viewing area and user is now forced to
more mouse further. [yes , firefox4 design also seems to want to do
something similar to this , But both browsers seem only trying to get it
right for Windows]

With gnome3 this becomes even weird since one wrongly positioned click
on the first tab in chrome and you are shunted off to the activities
overview.

2009-12-14 Thread mac_v
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [with
screenshot , if possible]
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 495901] Re: No openchrome drivers included on live cd (for via processors)

2009-12-12 Thread mac_v
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Invalid only in the
papercuts project.

2009-12-11 Thread mac_v
There is one other location where the icon appears on the panel only
during file operation. This icon in the panel will be replaced by a
monochrome icon in Lucid . So there wont be any confusion there either.

You could download the monochrome icon from latest lp:humanity and replace it
manually , if it is of concern.
the icon is labeled system-file-manager-symbolic , you can replace that in your
system.

[Bug 494334] Re: bug with the gnome panel

2009-12-09 Thread mac_v
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html.

We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 494639] Re: panel icon has visibility and poor contrast against some backgrounds

2009-12-09 Thread mac_v
Humanity has been released as two themes Humanity and Humanity-Dark.
 * Humanity with sufficient contrast for the light panels
 * Humanity-Dark with sufficient contrast for dark panels

Since ,the color of the panel nearly matches the icon color they are bound to
have less contrast.
Until this is implemented http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/SymbolicIcons ,
There is nothing much we can do in the icon theme.

If neither Humanity nor Humanity-Dark dont provide sufficient contrast
, I'd suggest you use a semi-transparent panel.[right-click on the panel
Select Properties , in the background tab , set the panel as semi
tranparent ]

[Bug 416251] Re: Nautilus does not show Desktop thumbnails

2009-12-08 Thread mac_v
I'v been using the Lucid kernel (2.6.32-6) for nearly a week and I
havent noticed this problem. The problem seems to have reduced a lot
[maybe once in the whole week i might have had the problem , i didnt
expect the new kernel to fix this problem hence i didnt make a note]

Previously i would have to restart nautilus almost 2-3 times a day and
would need to restart system every 2days. [with kernel 32-6 , system has
been running the whole week and i havent restarted my system the whole
week nor did it require a restart]

Could someone else try it with the Lucid kernel too , maybe it might
help ?

2009-12-08 Thread mac_v

have a lot more new icons and several old ones from the karmic release will
change.
