[Bug 1971338] [NEW] Activities overview / switching workspaces runs on low framerate (30fps) on NVIDIA + Wayland

2022-05-03 Thread Triangle Stone
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1970291 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1970291

Public bug reported:

(Bug report can also be found on
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/2247)

Details:

- Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
- GNOME Shell 42.0
- Bug happens on Wayland only
- Dell XPS with i9-9980HK (using the GTX 1650 mobile, since gnome runs very
slow on integrated graphics)
- NVIDIA driver version 510.60.02
- Using internal monitor (4k) + two external 4k monitors

Summary:
The activity overview / the process of switching workspaces runs at half the
normal framerate (30fps) when running NVIDIA on Wayland.

Steps to reproduce:
- Run Wayland and NVIDIA
- Open activity overview or switch workspaces
- Lament the framerate

What I expected to happen:
I expect the overview and workspace switching process to run at the framerate
that matches the monitor refresh rate (60Hz).

[Bug 1938953] Re: virtualbox-dkms 6.1.16-dfsg-6~ubuntu1.20.04.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2021-08-22 Thread Nick Stone
I have VirtualBox 6.1 installed. It was working perfectly, then suddenly
I get "kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)" when I attempt to start a
virtual machine.

My Linux system is 5.11.0-27-generic #29~20.04.1-Ubuntu.

Is this fault because a new Linux kernel has been released but
VirtualBox not been updated? This happened once before and after a few
days a new VirtualBox was released (by Ubuntu) and the problem was
solved.

If it is the same problem, some mechanism/procedure needs to be put in
place so that VirtualBox does not stop working when a new Linux kernel
is released.

Re: [Bug 1766976] Re: Please consider installing fonts-noto-color-emoji by default

2021-06-03 Thread Nick Stone
Thanks. I hope it gets acted on! Its not a problem for me anymore, but
it did cost me a lot of time (trying to figure out why my Qt based app
wouldn't display the cheese whereas Geany would!).
Whilst the problem persists, there is a danger that other people will
lose a similar amount of time.
Cheers.

[Bug 1898849] Re: Ubuntu Mate freezes when I run Facebook on Firefox

2020-10-07 Thread Norm Stone
Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS

Samsung.
Intel core i7- 3630QM @ 2.40 GHz.
4GB RAM

The freeze problem now occurs with any more than 1 hours uptime.

I am running the OS from a USB stick.

I am very pleased with the OS (compared to windows) but I am reluctant
to load it onto the HD in case the problem persists.

The same happens with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

I am beginning to think it is my laptop. Perhaps I shgould wipe the HD
and start again,

Thanks heaps for you attention

[Bug 1766976] Re: Please consider installing fonts-noto-color-emoji by default

2020-09-22 Thread Nick Stone
Just an addendum to my comment above. I would describe this as a serious
problem with a default install of XUbuntu. I spent two days trying to
work out why my Qt based app was not displaying certain unicode
characters (eg cheese wedge). It was just showing the white rectangle.
Other apps, eg Geany, gnome-console, were showing the cheese just fine;
so I thought I had a bug. I didn't know that Qt apps could not display
colour emojis. If they cannot display colour unicode characters, then
they should display the grey equivalent instead of just displaying a
white rectangle. As I say, I spent two days trying to understand why my
app was not displaying certain characters when I knew that the font it
was using did support that character.

[Bug 1766976] Re: Please consider installing fonts-noto-color-emoji by default

2020-09-21 Thread Nick Stone
In a default fresh install of XUbuntu 20.04, Qt based applications, eg
Featherpad and Qt-Creator, will not display certain unicode characers,
eg, U+1F9C0 CHEESE WEDGE 燎 (a white rectangle is shown instead). Non Qt
apps, eg geany or gnome-terminal, show the cheese successfully. If Noto
fonts are manually uninstalled, then the problem is fixed; Featherpad
does display the cheese correctly. Conjecture: the Noto fonts were
providing a colour version of the cheese wedge; the Qt apps could not
display that but can display grey versions

Well in the latest version
https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/focal/tree/arch/arm64/configs/bcm2711_defconfig?h=raspi
 I see that both 'CONFIG_CLK_RASPBERRYPI' and 'CONFIG_ARM_RASPBERRYPI_CPUFREQ'
are set to 'y' why do you think it was disabled again?

> Is it sufficient simply to re-enable CONFIG_CLK_RASPBERRYPI?
I don't know, but the original commit also enabled
CONFIG_ARM_RASPBERRYPI_CPUFREQ=y

If Hui Wang meant with his comment#7[1] something different than
enabling 'CONFIG_CLK_RASPBERRYPI' and 'CONFIG_ARM_RASPBERRYPI_CPUFREQ' I
don't know what it is.

Hi - message for AaronMa (mapengyu)

I can confirm your steps work in the post above.

I upgraded my kernel to '4.15.0-72-generic' and my touchpad stopped
working

Touchpad Hardware is: Synaptics TM2976-002

My touchpad now works again after the following steps:

Could you test the following kernel ppa please:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mapengyu/bionic-oem
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt install linux-image-unsigned-4.15.0-73-generic linux-
modules-4.15.0-73-generic linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-73-generic

Note: For anyone else out there that needs this fix, if you are using
the broadcom-sta ko for your wireless and it is loaded via dkms, you
will also need to install the kernel headers in order for dkms to do its
thing

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-4.15.0-73-generic

Thanks to AaronMa/whomever fixed the bug

I'm not sure if this is related but just in case. I upgraded from
16.04.1 LTS to 18.04.2 - straight after I started getting alarms from my
SNMP monitoring, low voltage VBat etc. Upon checking the sensors output
I can see it's all messed up:

nicely researched and documented bug. Why not fixed three years later? I

[Bug 251443]

2018-12-18 Thread Daniel Stone
I assume it's relatively well known, but here's where I landed.

My plan to fix this, was to bypass XKM support completely, by
integrating the parser into the server. Currently the server forks
xkbcomp to build a particular keymap, xkbcomp produces (lossy) XKM
files, and then the server consumes XKM. xkbcommon was supposed to fix
this (hence the name), but the problem is that the server wants very
different things from xkbcommon than everyone else. Specifically, it
wants to be able to mutate arbitrary parts of the keymap after
construction, which is very messy. Ultimately we just kept xkbcommon for
everyone _but_ the X server, with a much smaller API.

The best thing to do for anyone who wants to pick this up is probably to
look at importing xkbcommon circa
https://github.com/xkbcommon/libxkbcommon/commit/ed18e65eacdabfeaeafee7c369891312af99c82d
into the X server, in place of the xkbcomp entrypoint in xkb/ddxLoad.c.
That particular commit is probably the most tractable balance between an
actual functional xkbcommon without memory leaks, and one which hasn't
changed the server-facing API and internals _too_ far away from what the
server needs.

I'd expect that someone at Canonical might have a better chance at spurring

This comment lays out the best way forward for anyone interested to fix
this bug. It shouldn't be too difficult, but personally I haven't worked
on X11 for quite some time.

[Bug 36812]

2018-06-08 Thread Daniel Stone

Here's what I think we would need to do in order to not break old clients:
https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg-devel/2013-January/035049.html

Another, probably better, way to do it would be to define a new flag
like XkbSA_HasGroupFlags inside the XkbModAction flags field when
group_flags and group_XXX are valid rather than potentially garbage.
That would avoid the whole version-negotiation nightmare, as nothing
appears to be too picky about extra flags being defined.

Five years later, it would also be good to have support inside
libxkbcommon (which has a pretty decent test suite) and xcb-proto for
the flags.

[Bug 1769061] [NEW] Screen lock + Laptop lid close forces suspend

2018-05-04 Thread Gary McCandless-Stone
Public bug reported:

After install of Xubuntu 18.04

When the screen is locked (either ctrl+alt+l or through power manager
settings (when laptop lid is closed selection)) and the laptop lid is
closed, the system suspends.

It doesn't happen when screen is locked but left open or when lid is closed
with no screen lock and screen is set to "switch off display" in laptop close
lid settings in power manager.
After long periods in this state, it can become impossible to log back in. It
may log back in to a black screen etc.

This is my first bug report and I'm not entirely sure what all information I
need to include.
I can do an apport report as it doesn't crash the system directly but I have
needed to do a hard reboot on occasion.

[Bug 1765946] [NEW] Solaar tray icon not visible

2018-04-21 Thread Nick Stone via ubuntu-bugs
Public bug reported:

XUbuntu 18.04. Solaar functionality is available from the tray. However,
the Solaar icon is not visible. The tray has a blank square where the
icon should be. Hovering the mouse pointer over the blank square
displays the "Solaar" tooltip. Clicking on the (blank) square displays
the Solaar menu and Solaar functionality is available via that menu.

[Bug 1635824] Re: r8168-dkms 8.041.00-1: r8168 kernel module failed to build [error: ‘NETIF_F_ALL_CSUM’ undeclared]

2017-04-25 Thread Guy Stone
The patch enables the module to compile correctly and produce a
functioning driver. I derived it by analogy with other fixes for the
r8168/9. I claim no understanding of this module or the underlying
chipset problem!

Kernel 4.4 appears to be the last version where the original code is
applicable.

[Bug 1617468] Re: Package contains files in /usr/@DATADIRNAME@/locale

2016-12-20 Thread Jeff Stone
Could someone provide the commands to merge the files into the share
directory properly? I think it'll be something like:

cd /usr
sudo cp -r @DATADIRNAME@/* share

But I'm not really an expert and I don't want to experiment. Thanks

2016-08-31 Thread Charles Stone-Tolcher
the problem is in the plymouth and the two pieces of software are Comodo
and Avast antivirus. I only causes problems when I boot up so is there a
way of deleting them without a fresh install?

2016-01-12 Thread Aaron Stone
Public bug reported:

Please sync trafficserver 6.0-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Would be great to have ATS 6.0 included in Xenial. Since the Wily sync
of trafficserver 5.3 from Debian, the last remaining patches can be
dropped as they are merged upstream.

Follows up from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/trafficserver/+bug/1476470
which synced ATS 5.3 in time for Wily.

Debian changelog from 5.3.0-2 to 6.0-2:

trafficserver (6.0.0-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Re-enable 32-bit builds
  * Add some optional build dependencies
  * Use -O3 by default

[Bug 1480347] Re: Please remove ruby-merb packages and links to merbivore.com

2015-12-27 Thread Aaron Stone
With upstream https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=809140
the following packages can be removed now:

Quote:

Dear ftpmasters,

Please remove this package cluster from sid:

  chef-server-api chef-server-webui chef-solr ruby-merb-core ruby-merb-
assets ruby-merb-helpers ruby-merb-param-protection chef-expander ruby-
merb-haml

ruby-merb-* has long been obsoleted by Rails 3 (and later), and upstream
has ceased development in 2011.

The chef-* packages have long been obsoleted by "Erlang Chef".
(They depend on ruby-merb-*...)

Will remove the following packages from unstable:

chef-expander | 10.12.0-1 | source, all
chef-server-api | 10.12.0-1 | source, all
chef-server-webui | 10.12.0+dfsg-1 | source, all
chef-solr | 10.12.0+dfsg-2 | source, all
libmerb-helpers-ruby |1.1.3-1 | all
libmerb-helpers-ruby1.8 |1.1.3-1 | all
merb-core | 1.1.3+dfsg-3 | all
ruby-merb-assets |1.1.3-2 | source, all

[Bug 1368864] Re: old motd is displayed on login

2015-03-21 Thread Casey Stone
Hello: This affects my server(s), 14.04.2 LTS. In fact I just logged in
and got information that was 11 days old. I rely on the welcome message
especially to tell me when I need to REBOOT for some automatically-
installed (perhaps security) updates to be fully applied. Perhaps a
wiser sysadmin would have a better way to be notified about that!

Anyway, could this bug perhaps be assigned to someone and solved soon
please?

[Bug 1307545] Re: Power Manager settings are ignored when closing laptop lid

2014-11-19 Thread Jeremy Stone
For all those who have no success editing /etc/systemd/logind.conf or
found that rm ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-
manager.xml only works temporarily, I had success using gksudo gedit
/etc/UPower/UPower.conf and then setting IgnoreLid=true.

A second work around is to hit ctrl+alt+f1, sign in using your username
(lower-case) and password, then enter sudo restart lightdm, followed by
your password again (some times this has to be done all with a pitch
black screen)

Not ideal I know but is the best solution i've found.

[Bug 1013881]

2014-05-19 Thread Daniel Stone
At the risk of just making things worse ...

My €0.02 is that we should stick with level 5 right Control as being
optional. This is a marginal (in terms of percentage of userbase that
will ever see/use it) layout that people have to go out of their way to
use, but still taking away a modifier is a pretty big and surprising
step.

I've got sympathy with the non-breaking-space thing from a strict
technical correctness point of view, however it just can't be essential
for day-to-day usage if Windows requires you to enter it by the Unicode
codepoint. If such a large percentage of the French-speaking world cope
with it, then so can we.

I think Andreas's proposal is the only sensible one. Some people won't
be happy with it, but if this discussion (and that of Bépo) has shown us
anything, it's that you really can't please anyone when dealing with
alternate French keyboard layouts.

I'm not sure yet, it didn't do it with Cave Story (i only had enough
space left on my live usb for a small game) so im installing it to my
secondary hard drive, then ill see if it does it with more intensive
games.

[Bug 1273806] [NEW] mouse dies intermittently until cold reboot

2014-01-28 Thread Guy Stone
Public bug reported:

While in use from minutes to hours, the cursor disappears and the
buttons stop working. Attaching another mouse to a different USB ports
restores functionality , but the original mouse stays dead. This
behaviour has been discussed in Askubuntu #69594, but solutions there
did not prevent hanging on this system.

Been pecking away at this issue for a few years now. Still occurs
annoyingly frequently on a HP DV7 AMD system running updated 12.04.3
upgraded to 3.11-0-15-generic kernel.

This time when it happened, looked at the dmesg outputs. They all showed
a very recent

type=1400 audit(1390858876.548:75): apparmor=DENIED
operation=capable parent=1 profile=/usr/sbin/cupsd pid=1249
comm=cupsd pid=1249 comm=cupsd capability=36
capname=block_suspend

There was no printing occurring. No printer is connected to this system
(it prints via another (XP) system via network), and there are no other
USB devices attached except for a powered-down HDD..

Figured the next thing to try was disabling apparmor for cups. Since
doing that, the mouse remains working.

Wild guess here is that something in the cupsd profile is triggering for
a dangerous behaviour of a USB printer which can be mistakenly triggered
by a USB mouse. (Launchpad 1199933 discusses the issue around
block_suspend and why I couldn't just shut down that single rule.)

 Status: New

ROOT CAUSE
bumlib.pm gets the current module description from apt-cache show and saves it
with
my $start = rindex($s_info,Description);
With internationalization, the pkg description text can have a hyphen and
language code. So now $start is pointing to the wrong place.

Sorry I'm not a PERL programmer so I can't supply a patch.

[Bug 1252298] Re: totem has error on playing attached .vob file

2013-11-24 Thread William Stone III
I ran Totem from the command line and opened a target .mpg file. It
errored with an on-screen message box that reads:

No window title
An error occurred
Internal data stream error

The box has an ok button.

In the command prompt window, the following message was printed:

** (totem:7054): CRITICAL **: gst_video_decoder_allocate_output_frame:
assertion 'frame-output_buffer == NULL' failed

Totem did not crash. I can restart the video, but it will start at the
beginning. I can take an arbitrary time in the video and the behavior
will replicated within 20 seconds of play. In each case, it errors with
the combination message box and command-line message.

[Bug 1249663] Re: Trusty gnome flashback indicator-applet-complete disappeared completely. Nothing displays in the top right panel.

2013-11-11 Thread Guy Stone
More to this than meets the eye. I'm runningTahr in latest VBox with
Guest Additions.

Logging into Gnome Flashback, system OK with just 1 workspace and my
desktop is as expected. If I increase that to 4 and switch away from #1,
lose my wallpaper and panels - blacked-out screen - have to close VM to
get out.

Logging into Gnome Flashback No Effects, I can use all 4 of the
workspaces.

[Bug 1244812] [NEW] Virtualbox errors after kernel upgrade

2013-10-25 Thread Guy Stone
Public bug reported:

Using VBox 4.3.0.89960 on AMD64 Precise host. After upgrading the host
to a 3.8.0.32-generic kernel, there are errors that don't appear with
the .31-generic kernel. Example:

There is no virtual machine with the identifier
45be42f7-2017-4a73-a981-3c73d641eb9d.
Could not find a registered machine with UUID
{45be42f7-2017-4a73-a981-3c73d641eb9d}.
Result Code: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)
Component: VirtualBox
Interface: IVirtualBox {fafa4e17-1ee2-4905-a10e-fe7c18bf5554}

However, VBoxManage showvminfo (wth the .32 kernel) reports
