Re: [Ubuntu-be] Hello all
Great story Maik, Anyone else who wants to share his story? (having some of these stories on the website might get some new people interested..) It's nice to see people call Ubuntu their 'home'. All fellow geeks know it, there is no place like 127.0.0.1! But for others, the simplicity of Ubuntu is already wicked enough.. grts Wouter Date: Sun, 8 May 2011 21:13:12 +0200 From: mikemorr...@gmail.com To: ubuntu-be@lists.ubuntu.com Subject: Re: [Ubuntu-be] Hello all Oh hi there Maik :) 2011/5/8 Maik Adamietz Hello all, A few days ago i joined the Ubuntu BE team as you all know from the report Wouter has written on the IRC meeting. Let me tell you some more about me so you can get to know me a bit better. Some of you know me from IRC and maybe also from the Ubuntu NL forum where i go under the nickname: DarkEra. Maybe you also know me from the Ubuntu 9.04 release party that took place in Hasselt. In real life my name is Maik (pronounced Mike). I've started with Ubuntu early 2008 on February the 13th to be correct by taking the "deep dive" with version 7.10. Along with this i became a member on the forum there. I believe a year later or so i joined the team as a moderator, after a few months i came with the idea to start up the Community Manager which i've been for a while until i pointed someone else for the job who made a Community Council of it with another member, because i wanted to try something else by becoming Administrator of the boards. Because of some changes in my life i had to step down again somewhere between the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. From that timeperiod until now i've been distrohopping around a lot, trying to find my place or say home in the Linux world. I didn't know anymore what i wanted After a very long time of thinking it became clear to me that i already had found my home but left it. So, slowly but surely i made my way back where it all began for me: Ubuntu. Now i'm running Ubuntu again on my laptop and netbook (hope to by a PC next year) and want to get involved some more again in Ubuntu step by step. I think Ubuntu BE is the place for me to achieve this goal also because i live in Belgium myself. The "hunger" has grown again with the latest Ubuntu 11.04 release. This time i know what i want and i'm here to stay for good. I hope to get to know you all some more and you will show me the way around here at Ubuntu BE on how it works and how you work. I will try to be on every IRC meeting as much as i can to pick up things and to learn, join in on release parties and other things. One thing i'm about to do this evening is to get my hands on that awesome looking Ubuntu BE t-shirt, so a order is about to be placed. Thank you for accepting me as a member of the Ubuntu BE team and i'm looking forward to get to know you IRL soon. At least i hope that will happen, would be fun. Re: [Ubuntu-be] Hello world!
Hallo Jim, Welkom in de Ubuntu Belgian Local Community! We hope you will become an active member of the community, contributing to the promotion of Ubuntu. On the web-site, you can find the planning of activities in the agenda and register as support point (See procedure below). Regards, jean7491 Ubuntu Belgium Events Team Procedure for new support point: To create a user account on the web-site Ubuntu-be (http://ubuntu-be.org), click on "Login" towards the site "Launchpad Login Service" where you can create an account "Create a new account”. Launchpad.net is a collaboration platform used for the development of Ubuntu and many other free and Open source projects. The inscription is easy and free. Once the account is created, you can login to the site of Ubuntu-be.org and complete your user and supporter profile, using the left menu "My Account", "Edit", "Support profile", under the headings spoken languages, commitments, level and address. Hello, my name is Jim Bauwens, and I am a 17 year old Linux addict. I started to use linux/ubuntu extensively about 1,5 years ago, with ubuntu 9.04. I luckily had already knowledge of the Linux/Unix command line, so it was not a.problem diving into the terminal. I now use Linux as my main platform and have converted some people. I would like to support the ubuntu Belgium loco team, but I don't really have much time, since I am still in school. Hi, I'm Steven and I justed wanted to introduce myself to the list. I've been using Ubuntu for about 4 years now, and was first introduced to GNU/Linux distributions about 9 years ago. I live in Leuven and my native language is Dutch, I speak English fluently but only have basic notions of French. I recently discovered that there is a Belgian Ubuntu user group and I thought it would be a good idea to join, since it is now one of the most popular GNU/Linux distribution around. greetings, Steven -- ubuntu-be mailing list / mailto:ubuntu-be@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-be

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Hello!
Re-bonjour, (Je vais continuer en anglais pour que tout le monde comprenne) I just finished translating most of the ubuntu-be supporter points map in German, but I found it quite difficult to translate small phrases/words, out of their original context... It still needs some revision, because I suppose that there will be nonsenses or incorrect words, the translation being made without seeing the context. I don't know if I missed a particular function of the launchpad translation utility that would have enabled me to check the usage of the word in each particular case... Is there a way of seeing everything as it will appear on the map site? Because I'm not very sure of myself at the moment and wouldn't want it to be published as it is, without checking. By the way, when I registered as a supporter, I only had the choice between English, Dutch or French... no German ;) but I suppose this will come once the German translation is completed and online. Re: [Ubuntu-be] hello list
Hey Kevin sorry to reply like this, I had my mailing list settings set to daily digest and I couldn't figure out a way to reply directly. Anyhow, about you question re: rails/python: - python should be compared to ruby (the language), not ruby on rails (the application framework) - rails is comparable with the django framework that's built on python I have no hands-on experience with python/django, but I think they're quite similar to ruby/rails, although coming from a java world, you'll find python far more accessible as its syntax is quite close to java. Ruby on the other hand is influenced by lisp and smalltalk. Its syntax is quite strange to begin with if you've never been exposed to lisp/smalltalk, but imho ruby is a very natural and intuitive language. It's very expressive and allow you to do funky stuff, especially compared to the C# stuff I was used to. So on the whole, I think they're equally hard/easy to learn and both are powerfull, expressive and refreshing. Hi list, As I'm supposed to introduce myself, her goes: I'm a 28 year old web developer from Leuven. I've worked as a business analyst for Deloitte and as senior developer for IPGlobalnet, a Telco service provider (that is: they provide services for Telcos). I mainly do Drupal installations and custom ruby on rails apps.
