[Bug 1095487] [NEW] Ubuntu installer manual partitioning: disk encryption strange behaviour
Public bug reported: My apologies for not spending much time on this bug. I hope someone else can investigate the issue since I am short in time. I have installed Ubuntu today over my existing Debian installation. Unfortunately my ubuntu adventure has started very bad: my data partition got formatted. Steps I took in the installation procedure: - I chose for custom partitioning - I selected my debian root to be formatted as ext4 and mounted on / - I clicked my data partition and in the use as field selected encrypted disk (or something similar) - I entered my passphrase and clicked ok At this point I realized the installer was probably creating a new Luks partition instead of using the existing one, so I decided to instead set up my data partition manually after the installation had been completed. - I clicked the revert button a couple of times. It seemed to me at this point the installer was not altering my data partition. - I clicked install After rebooting and checking my data partition, I found out a new Luks partition had been creaed. Furthermore, it had been formated as ext4, though I am completely sure I did not check the format box for my data partition. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1095487 Title: Ubuntu installer manual partitioning: disk encryption strange behaviour To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1095487/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1073611] [NEW] Ubuntu online manual pages need updating to Quantal
Public bug reported: The Ubuntu online manual pages need updating to Quantal. http://manpages.ubuntu.com/ Currently the most recent set of manual pages is Precise, but Quantal has already been released. [Ubuntu-be] Manual
Hey guys I shorted some chapters to get the manual v1.0 ready by tomorrow morning. In the end I'm not so pleased with the lack of visual stuff in the first chapters and the short last chapter.. it should have been 4 serperate chapters.. I just didn't have the time for it... Anyhow, when schools starts again, I'd like to have a complete version (V1.1) of the manual which also includes installation etc.. http://vdnkr.be/Ubuntu_Handleiding_V1_0.pdf Please tell me your remarks.. PS: I didn't find the changes Jurgen made. So I'm afraid there are still a kazillion spelling errors in there.. If some of you can get them all out by the end of the week I'll submit that one at my fathers company, else it's this version. Re: [Ubuntu-be] Dutch Ubuntu 12.04 Manual V0.1 Draft
A small question. Do we have authorisation from Canonical to 'own' Ubuntu? I see a lot of ons and onze in this manual. We may need to tread carefully with this. As for the tone of your mail... no, not bold, just driving the message home loud and clear. Maybe add a watermark to the document? I know, it's easy to remove, but people that quickly copy from a mate, or send it to a guy that asked for it, are often lazy to edit the document. Good comments. As for your first question: Since we are an official LoCo team we can say Ubuntu is ours. For one because Ubuntu is from the community and secondly because LoCo teams have all rights over the Ubuntu logo, product etc. as long as they follow the COD an branding guidelines. Hey guys, here is the second version of the file: http://vdnkr.be/Ubuntu%20Handleiding%20draftV0_2.pdf I think I've gone over the entire interface, if you see something I forgot, please say so. If you see spelling errors, please notify me.. I'm going to email the whole .odt thing to jurgen now, but please, just change the text and keep it black. I'm sure I made a ton of spelling errors (I'm not that good in spelling), but it would take just extra time to go over the entire page and get the red text out.. If others want the file, I'll send it after I've got jurgens version back. That way I can just Copy/Paste the whole thing.. :) In the future we have to find a better way to do this, but at the moment, it just needs to go fast! Re: [Ubuntu-be] Dutch Ubuntu 12.04 Manual V0.1 Draft
Hi Alain The installation process should indeed be covered. But I'll explain the deal we have with ERGO to tell you why I don't include it in this version. ERGO (the company where my dad works) is changing to a clean desk policy and everybody gets a laptop. All desktops become obsolete by this. Every company employee can ask to keep his or her computer and can even ask for multiple computers. (That is because most people don't ask to keep their computer so those who want can even get more than one) This came to my ears and since we really need some new hardware for Ubuntu-be I sent them a mail asking for about 20 computers. The deal that came from this is following: As it is for a good cause and we were the first to ask, we can get some computers (probably 20, but not sure about the exact amount). Even more: all obsolete desktops get Ubuntu installed on them (since they have to swipe the drive anyway). So the computers we get from ERGO will have Ubuntu on it, and all other computers from ERGO that are taken by other employees will have Ubuntu on it. In return we provide them with a decent Dutch beginners manual. This deal was made in March I believe, and there are several computers waiting to come home with my dad already. That's why I want to go fast on this tutorial (ideally it should be ready by the end of tomorrow). Since the computers come with Ubuntu already installed it isn't necessary for the employees to install Ubuntu on them. To save time I decided to include the chapter about installing later for the general version of the manual but not for this ERGO version of it. I hope this answers your question. I will try to do the installing part as soon as possible. However, if you want, feel free to do that yourself! If someone makes the installing part today or tomorrow, I will include it in the manual as well.. Re: [Ubuntu-be] Dutch Ubuntu 12.04 Manual V0.1 Draft
Guys, I'm currently talking about the default installed applications on Ubuntu. Are there any other non-standard apps I should talk about? I was thinking of including those on the Ubuntu website since they are popular with non linux users.. (skype, spotify, chrome, GIMP..) But are there others you think I should include? Grts Wouter 2012/7/1 Wouter Vandenneucker wouterv...@gmail.com Hi Alain The installation process should indeed be covered. Re: [Ubuntu-be] Dutch Ubuntu 12.04 Manual V0.1 Draft
Okay Guys We're getting there.. So far we've got about 63 pages and only a handful of smaller chapters to write. (Only the settings chapter is going to be a damn awful lot.. :O) After those are written we *only* need to: - Add some pictures/logo's to fill up the first couple of chapters (see: http://design.ubuntu.com) - Check the spelling (srsly, I can't spell at all!) - Give it to the people at ERGO and get our computers in return - include the installation procedure - Revise the whole text - Publish our own manual on the website - Maintain it... Anyone who's willing to help me with this, please feel free to commit. I'd like to get the writing and those first 2 steps done by tomorrow evening. (Knowing I'm starting my vacationjob tomorrow it guess it's going to be a loong night..) Also if you disagree with the proposed course of action, please tell me how to make it better! And thx Jan, really appreciate you like my effort. By this I'm sharing the latest version of both the PDF file and the ODT file. And please, by all means: DO NOT PUBLISH THESE FILES OR EVEN KEEP THEM ON YOUR DRIVE LONGER THAN YOU NEED TO READ THEM! Also: DON'T EVER GIVE THE ODT FILE TO PEOPLE WHO SHOULD ONLY READ IT, EVER! I don't want to sound harsh, but having a semi-complete version floating around is only going to get us in trouble and it gives the impression to new people that Ubuntu-be can't manage to complete something. As for the ODT file, for reading purposes nobody should ever, ever use that one! Not for this manual, not for any document. This, as it will only result in the all known issue of text and images jumping around like a crazy horse it being a stimulance for people to create wild-flesh-like derivatives. Please, don't get me wrong. When we have a file that is release ready, by all means share it with everybody! Heck, even stimulate other people to make their own branch/version of it and then merge it with our version. But for now, just keep it contained.. Super initiative! If you send me the ODT-file, I'll fix some language errors and typos. I would also recommend adding the keyboard shortcuts, and how you don't need to memorize them (just keep the launch button pressed for a second). Great start anyway! Re: [Ubuntu-manual] Manual: fuzzies, on/offline and translator credits
Hi Hannie On Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 4:52 PM, lafeber-dumoleyn2 lafeber-dumole...@zonnet.nl wrote: Thanks to all the reactions in the thread Not happy at all, which I started in December, I can give you an update on what I have done. After merging manual-lucid and manual-maverick with the command 'msgmerge', the result is a new po-file with all the old translations in it, contrary to manual-maverick in Launchpad which lacks more than 400 translated paragraphs. I cannot upload this new po-file to Launchpad because then all the fuzzies are missing. So the only options are: 1. copy all the fuzzies from the po-file to manual-maverick in Launcpad. This is a very time-consuming job and on top of that the name of the original translator is substituted by the name of the person who copies the paragraphs. This is hardly fair to the original translator. 2. finish the manual-maverick po-file offline in a CAT. This would be much faster, but I am afraid that it will become a mess when this file is later uploaded to Launchpad. Besides, working offline can only be done by one person. And here we have the same problem, the names of the original translators are lost. Perhaps there is someone who can come up with a brilliant idea to solve this. I am particularly interested in how the German and Greek translation teams have tackled this. It shouldn't become a mess when the file is uploaded to Launchpad after working offline. It might complain if the po-file header has changed, but that should not be a problem if you choose import rather than upload. Did you observe any problems? Regards Ask I also experimented, with the help of Ask, with the commands podiff, wdiff and cdiff. These are useful to find out which version is the right one. Example: I had about 4 versions of manual-Lucid, with slight differences. With wdiff/cdiff it was made easy to find which was the right one.
