[Bug 66687] [Edgy] Apt configure is too long ...

2006-10-17 Thread VoDaiChuyen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Well, I have just installed Edgy but for Dapper, the installation
process is too long. After copying essential packages, then the
configuration process began taking so much time, esp apt. I can not
access the internet so the "scanning mirror and security repo" took me
20 minutes.

[Bug 56255] Re: Segfault in Samba

2006-10-17 Thread Patrik L
Some update on this case.

The latest segfault reported looks like this:
--
The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for pid 804 (/usr/sbin/nmbd).

Below is a backtrace for this process generated with gdb, which shows
the state of the program at the time the error occurred.

If the problem persists, you are encouraged to first install the
samba-dbg package which contains the debugging symbols for samba
binaries. Then, submit the provided information as a bug report to Ubuntu.

[Bug 65489] Re: gnome-terminal tends to lock up

2006-10-17 Thread Ming Hua
As the discussion and tests in bug #66104 shows, what Wenzhuo
experienced is a probably a well known (at least among input method
people) bug. This bug usually shows up when user uses XIM (therefore
using other GTK or Qt IM module seems to make this bug disappear), and
is not restricted in GNOME. The discussions on SCIM mailing list and
Redhat bugzilla suggest it is a bug in Xorg.

I've given a workaround in bug #66104, but only apply to SCIM users.
This problem is more visible in Ubuntu than in Debian because Ubuntu's
scim package set the /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic configuration to false by
default to get better support for deadkeys. Both upstream tarball and
Debian package set this to true by default, and this bug won't show up
in the default configuration.

seb, I tried apport-retrace on the report, and neither your stacktrace,

[Bug 57502] Re: JMicron PATA/SATA Controller does not work

Anders, you have the HDD plugged into the JMicron controller, right? In
my configuration, the HDD is plugged into an ICH8R connector (the
Foxconn board I'm using only has an external SATA connector from the
JMB363, no internal one) - alas, my system freezes as described above,
with errors from the jmb36x driver (which only has a DVD-ROM connected
to it).

Aryc, I use a standard PS/2 keyboard. Do you mean I should disable "USB

That typo is present in both Dapper and Edgy. Interestingly, there is

in a version older than the one we have in Edgy. So it seems that the
Debian patch got lost somewhere...

I just tried again on my laptop, and the bug was still present:

- browse for other folders
- double click on "File System"

filename entry disappears from Name: field

 3 105GB 107GB 2056MB primary linux-swap

It also works, when I specify /dev/hdb to gparted:
sudo gparted /dev/hdb

The problem is, that "sudo gparted" doesn't show any disks.
That is also a big problem in the installer, since there is no target for the
installation.

[Bug 62133] Re: Environment not properly prepared for SCIM

2006-10-17 Thread shanen \(Shannon Jacobs\)
I can confirm this problem afflicted another new Ubuntu installation. In
this case, I did a pure Japanese installation, but later switched the
user language to English. Japanese input was not accessible. (It also
messed up the keyboard settings, which had been set for Japanese 106
before.)

The environment variables mentioned above will work, though I couldn't
figure out where the best place to install them was. The fix I'm
actually using came from the Fedora Core people. (Fedora Core has the
same problem.)

[Bug 57957] Re: install/uninstall doesn't complete because of broken init-script

2006-10-17 Thread Jonathan Gordon
Well, the only way I was able to find resolution on this problem was to
do the following:

1. Found the script that was throwing the errors. In my case it was:
/usr/lib/vmware-player/net-services.sh

2. Backed up the file and then commented out the parts that were causing
the problems. In my case it was the following lines:

-- snip --
# Commented out by jmg on 10/6/06 to get vmplayer out of half-installed state
# vmware_exec 'Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet'"$vHubNr" \
# vmware_start_bridge "$vHubNr" "$interface"
   exitcode=$(($exitcode + $?))
elif [ -n "$hostaddr" -a -n "$netmask" ]; then
   vmware_create_vmnet "$vHubNr"
   vmware_bg_exec 'Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet'"$vHubNr" \
  vmware_start_hostonly "$vHubNr" 'vmnet'"$vHubNr" \
  "$hostaddr" "$netmask" 'yes'
   exitcode=$(($exitcode + $?))

   eval 'nat="$vmdb_answer_VNET_'"$vHubNr"'_NAT"'
   if [ "$nat" = 'yes' ]; then
# Commented out by jmg on 10/6/06 to get vmplayer out of half-installed state
# vmware_exec 'NAT service on /dev/vmnet'"$vHubNr" \
# vmware_start_nat "$vHubNr"
  exitcode=$(($exitcode + $?))
-- snip --

3. Ran the following command:
dpkg --configure -a

The script ran clean and the package was now listed as cleanly
installed.

4. Backed up the edited file and clobbered with the original.

Everything's working hunky dory now!

Jonathan.

Good, good. Exactly the situation I know the workaround for. :-)

What you really need to do is only change the /FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic
option in your ~/.scim/config to true. However it's a little tricky as
scim always rewrite its configuration files on exit. So I give the
following complicated procedure for the workaround:

1. Set scim not to start automatically: run "im-switch -s none". Log
out and re-login.

2. Edit your ~/.scim/config configuration file, change the
/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic option to true.

3. Reset scim to start automatically: run "im-switch -s scim-pinyin".
Log out and re-login.

Now there shouldn't be keyboard input lock-up anymore. However this
breaks deadkeys used in a lot of European keyboard layout. Although if
you only need to input Chinese and English, deadkeys should not be a
concern to you.

Please report back whether this workaround works for you or not.
Thanks.

Short answer; Dapper is missing the required package (rio500) to connect
to the rio so there is no way to create the device apart from by hand

Longer answer;

I just performed a fresh install of Dapper 6.06.1. The rio500 kernel
module exists and a manual modprobe appears to work. But I can't find
the rio500 package to actually test device connections. I've added the
unofficial repositories just in case but it isn't showing up there
either. I checked http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/cgi-
bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=rio500&searchon=names&subword=1&version=dapper&release=all
but it looks like it isn't available under Dapper (or Edgy). It was
under Breezy (which worked much better than Hoary, "dpkg-reconfigure
rio500: worked in Breezy, it just didn't survive a reboot). I'll try and
pull down source; either the deb source (librio500-dev) from breezy or
http://sourceforge.net/projects/rio500 and see if I can do anything with
that. Side note; the rioutils package is NOT appropriate

gtk-button-images=0

This is supposed to disable the icons for buttons in gtk apps. However, this

So synaptic seems to ignore the option in gtkrc-2.0.

Would happily attack this if we could get some

knock out a good selection to choose from in a
brief period of time -- assuming the copyright
