[Bug 56090] Re: Regression: Webcams using pwc driver produce all-grey images

2006-10-31 Thread Yannick Defais
Hi people !

I do some support for Ekiga in EKiga's IRC. Someone using Edgy repported the
same problem with is webcam, Luc Saillard (the pwc author) pointed out that the
driver size was wrong :
lsmod reported something like that :
pwc51964 1

Using Dapper, i have this :
pwc93984 0

IMHO, this should be considered as a proof pwc is broken on Edgy.
As compiling the driver solve the problem, an update of the kernel should be
considered by the kernel maintener for Edgy.

Regards,
Yannick Defais

[Bug 67387] Re: Client keymap doesn't match server's one

2006-10-31 Thread Stéphane Graber
Indeed, that's something that can be useful for a lot of people, the first time
I installed LTSP (on Dapper), I spent a week on the Internet to complete my
lts.conf
With edgy, that's quite completly automatically set, except this small thing.
It's indeed better to set the default value to the server's one and then set
some exceptions if we have different keyboards on some client than having all
the clients with the US keymap.

Our needing to edit a configuration file which is stored

Neither Tollef nor I liked the .old idea, home directories are already
cluttered enough; and if the file already exists, we cannot really
decide whether the user copied it there or whether we can overwrite
it. OTOH Tollef didn't like to have it completely purged on session
start (what gdm does), so we agreed to this compromise.

Matt Zimmerman wrote:

>

It did not wait in dapper, but it does in edgy. Fabio said this was
because sometimes the underlying hardware was not detected at the time
the script was run, so it keeps trying to activate the volume until it
succeeds ( or 3 minutes elapses ) hoping that the devices will show up
and it will be able to activate the volume.

> And as I said above, this should be reported as a bug. Positive.
>

What exactly is the malfunction, and what should it be doing instead?
And would it be fixed in edgy? Based on my talk with Fabio on IRC, the
wait is not a malfunction but is required in order to activate the LVM
volume on slowly detected hardware. That the lvm script assumes you are
dealing with an lvm volume if the boot path starts with /dev/mapper
might be a defect, but Fabio and I could not see a workaround.

> We have a procedure for post-release updates.

It did not seem to me that this would classify as a post-release update
candidate since it is not security related, and only causes an annoying
delay in conjunction with a rare use case of a package from Universe.

If you feel this can and should be fixed in edgy, please go ahead and
file the bug against lvm, otherwise it should be resolved during the
udev rework in this development cycle.

[Bug 69617] Re: totem-mozilla doesn't work on basically anything

2006-10-31 Thread Ketil Malde
...better yet, don't let firefox suggest "movie player" (i.e. totem)
unless there is good reason to believe it can handle the stream type. I
typically have installed xine, amarok, and mplayer, all of which could
handle mp3s.

And while I'm at it, you do realize one has to *browse* through /usr/bin
if you want firefox to open a different application? There has to be a
better way -- how about firefox present the choices from gnome/kde
applications menu instead?

I tend to think that this is the single issue that makes Ubuntu less
streamlined and newbie-friendly than Certain Other operating systems.

[Bug 67350] Re: [edgy] No response to Caps Lock key

2006-10-31 Thread Nick Booker
For the benefit of any others who experience the same problem, I think I've
half solved it (in X (see bug 66991)) - changing the XKBLayout entry in
xorg.conf from "uk" to "gb" solved this so now I can switch to VTs and use Caps
Lock (though now I've lost Scroll Lock but does anything use that anyway?)
Maybe it's the installer selecting a dodgy keyboard layout ("uk") when I select
"United Kingdom" from the presented list, and it should choose "gb" instead?
There's still no Caps in the console though which I would think is of the same
nature - now I must investigate where to change the layout for the console...

I was using blank only. I have not had this problem since removing
gnome-screensaver, and I'm currently somewhat loathe to reinstall it. I
shall do so during the feisty cycle though, and report on whether the
bug is gone or not.

[Bug 67521] Re: kwalletmanager do not rememeber passwords after session/system restart

2006-10-31 Thread ma2412ma
The workaround doesn't work for me - where exactly is the configuration
of kwallet? I can't find it in the start menu. If I right-click on the
icon in the system tray, I can configure the application, but I can't
find the entry "launch manager on KDE start" - there's only "enable the
KDE wallet subsystem", and I've tried to uncheck that and restart, but
that doesn't work.

[Bug 69629] Kopete doesn't only lets you insert newlines at the beginning of messages

2006-10-31 Thread Joseph Garvin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete

It's fairly standard behavior nowadays for an IM app to let you insert
newlines into a message by pressing Shift+Enter. Kopete allows you to do
this once at the beginning of a message, but won't let you insert
additional lines, and won't let you after any text.

To reproduce:
1. Launch kopete
2. Click on a buddy to open the conversation window
3. Press shift+enter. The cursor should go down a line.
4. Press shift+enter again. The cursor won't go down. (It should)
5. Type some text. Press shift+enter again. The cursor won't go down (it should)

[Bug 48717] USB Camera not handled properly in KDE

2006-10-31 Thread Ryan Zeigler
Public bug reported:

When a camera is plugged in, it is properly detected and a pop window
occurs. When selecting Open in new window from the popup dialog,
system:/media/camera is opened that shows a single folder with the
camera name. Opening said folder chains and opens urls of the form
system:/media/camera/camera/camera...

one camera for each time the icon is clicked. A USB Imaging Device also
appears on the desktop, and the tooltip lists the base url as camera:/

However, clicking on the icon opens media:/camera, and clicking on the
listed folder in the window has no effect.

When camera:/ is opened by typing in the URL bar, the camera is properly
accessible.

[Bug 69623] 'last played' doesn't updated on internet radio stations

2006-10-31 Thread Eythian
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I am listening to internet radio stations, the 'last played' time
never changes from 'Never'. I presume this is because it updates for
files when the song finishes, which is the most sensible way. However,
streams never finish on their own, so the update doesn't happen.

This is with Edgy.

[Bug 69620] Re: Issues with sound on intel-hda in Edgy (2.6.17)

2006-10-31 Thread Daniel T Chen
The majority of the issues causing said symptom have been fixed in alsa-
kernel hg. Patches were available in early October and have been
backported to both Dapper and Edgy linux-source (see the October '06
Ubuntu kernel-team list archives) but have yet to be merged (note that
some said patches are invasive and questionable for an LTS release).

Two additional points:
1) Make sure you're running the latest BIOS;
2) Try compiling alsa-driver 1.0.13 from upstream alsa-project.org.

After an upgrade to edgy, /dev/dsp is not created.

A successful workaround is to boot edgy with the 2.6.15 kernel.

The related kernel module is "snd-ens1371".

With the 2.6.17 module, I would get this error in the logs:

" ENS1371: probe of :01:07.0 failed with error -5"

Using Google, I couldn't figure out what "error -5" was...

[Bug 40701] Re: creating a folder to computer not permitted but folder listed anyway

2006-10-31 Thread Rouben
Just a note that I was able to confirm this bug on Ubuntu Edgy (6.10)
with the most current updates installed as of today (2006-10-31).

Also note that the folder is not being actually created, because when
you navigate away from the "My Computer" screen, or refresh the view,
the "untitled folder" icon goes away. This seems to indicate that
nautilus uses a potentially flawed algorithm when creating
files/folders:

1. Draw icon and caption underneath the icon.
2. Read object associated with icon and determine the right icon to display (it
fails here, since the folder doesn't actually exist, and therefore displays the
generic "sheet of paper" icon).

At the very least there should be a step zero here that checks for a
successful completion of the requested action (create folder/file) and
only if the action was successful, should the system draw the icon and
its caption.

A less efficient (depending on design) way to solve this problem would
be to introduce a "doublecheck" for the existence of the item for which
the icon is being drawn, or rather attempt creating the object (the
actual file/folder), then cause the target window to recheck the
contents of that folder (I don't think a full reload is necessary for
that).

[Bug 69620] Issues with sound on intel-hda in Edgy (2.6.17)

2006-10-31 Thread sog
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-generic

The intel-hda driver appears to have significant issues in both Dapper
and Edgy. To be more specific, this is a good description of what I'm
experiencing (taken from the thread here
(http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0609.3/0467.html)):

"I have a ThinkPad X60 which uses the Intel 82801G HDA audio chip. This
used to work for me, but lately (sometime during 2.6.18-rcX series) it
stopped working - programs trying to use it tend to just block forever
waiting for /dev/dsp.

The only obvious symptom is:

hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd mode...

appearing in the kernel log when booting."

It's particularly bad post-suspend, but occurs intermittently otherwise.
I'm also on an X60s. See confirmation from another Ubuntu user here
(http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=156146&highlight=hda_intel%3A+azx_get_response).

If I open a document in oowriter using File/Open, everything works OK.

If I open the same document by right clicking in Nautilus and selecting
"open with OpenOffice Writer" all but two of the menu buttons disappear.
They re-appear one by one when you mouse over them, and sometimes a
group will randomly appear. The same occurs with the menu.
