[Bug 50757] Re: uhci_hcd generates flood of kernel messages while failing to mount usb stick

2007-05-04 Thread Fabian Mueller
Hi,

I've done everything and bundled it up in the attached tar file. There
is no devices.txt since there are no /dev/sd* devices even when the
stick is plugged in. hald doesn't say anything after the usual startup
mess, i.e. everything in hal.log is from _before_ attaching the stick.
Same with gvm.log.

As for the other requested information:

[Bug 112344] Xorg cofigures wrong video card in LTSP thin client

2007-05-04 Thread gavinmc
Public bug reported:

On an old P3 Dell machine being used as a thin client, there is an on-
board ATI video card not working properly (I'll report that separately).

To solve this I added an S3 Virge PCI card. Although the full boot up
messages are displayed over the S3 video card, the xorg.conf generated
is for the ATI card, with the PCI BUS IDs and the display driver
specific to that card.

The only way to get this working, that I can figure out is to place a
custom LTSP with the correct driver and pci bus id. As I'm away from
the machine just now I can't get the pci ids (though the ati card is the
numerically smaller ID).

For now all I can attach is the correct xorg.conf. I guess this may not
be enough, but hopefully it'll get this off the ground and you can tell
me in advance what you need. I guess you may want the xorg.conf and
logfile for both correct and incorrect configs, as well as lspci -vv?
Let me know if anything else is needed.

[Bug 105816] Re: Azureus crashes after start

2007-05-04 Thread Sam Brightman
It could be related to this report - my understanding is that UPnP is
not very well specified/compatible and the Azureus wiki mentions that it
should be disabled if Azureus keeps crashing or if your ISP disconnects
every 24h or so. If it's causes you problems then you can disable it in
Tools-Options-Plugins-UPnP. I would suggest that whilst the
possibility remains that this is a separate bug (i.e. without having
obtained the hotspot log), we only discuss your original problem in bug
83594 - otherwise it's easier to confused causes and harder to find
relevant information.

[Bug 110403] Same problem on Radeon Xpress 200M

2007-05-04 Thread John-Paul Gignac
Maybe this will help. I have the same problem on my HP Pavilion dv8000
with a Radeon Xpress 200M. In my case, I've never been able to get 3D
working, but I expect that's an unrelated problem. 2D rendering slowed
down dramatically with my upgrade to Feisty.

I've attached the same information that Habeeb requested of Enverex,
plus the output of glxinfo.

[Bug 109764] Seems Side Effect of Other Packages

2007-05-04 Thread Kent Borg
I rebooted into my light (default) Feisty install and the problem
doesn't seem to be there. (I don't think so, it is a little elusive
sometimes.) So looked again at the packages I had installed in my fat
Feisty install, looking for network-related items.

I found ipsec-tools and openswan . I removed them (I previously removed
vtun, there is a pattern here), and I think I have fixed it...I think
so. Networking seems to be working. A reboot or two might be
interesting, but for the moment my computer seems to be working.

Tom, Rocco: Are you having this problem on a default install?, or have
you installed other packages? (Have you installed any of the packages I
removed?) Any other suspicious packages on your machines?

[Bug 112348] Calc crashed when customizing toolbars

2007-05-04 Thread no.t
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Maybe the same bug as reported in #95487, but some info added:
I crashed in Calc at View-Toolbars, only Formatting and Standard
checked, I select View-Toolsbars-Customize-Toolbars
tab-Toolbars:Standard-Commands:Open...-Modify button-Change icon from
dropdown. This time I got Due to an unexpected error.. message.
The original problem was that I had only texts on menu bar. In

[Bug 96100] Re: system hangs while shutting down

2007-05-04 Thread Olivier Lacroix
Hi !

thanks for your tip and explanation. Tried it and now, dbus shut down
wothout any problem. But now, KDM fails to stop :-).

This is really a pain. Ubuntu is supposed to be upgradable. Is there a
way to reorganize the rc.d scripts in the right way ?

The bug should therefore be about update-rc.d

Another question : shouldn't upstart solve that in a near future ?

Thanks

Olivier

James, could you possibly try with 2.5.0.0 but from the site rather than

it would be good to clarify that it's getting it from the site, rather
than the new version as such that solves the problem. (or not).

[Bug 112349] Firefox / Thunderbird fonts are smaller than system fonts rest when reducing the font resolution

2007-05-04 Thread vicox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I always reduce the font resolution (dots per inch) from 96 to 80, because I
find the default size way too big.
In the new versions of Firefox and Thunderbird (today's updates), the font size
is much smaller than in the rest of the system.
When i switch back to 96 dpi, everything seems normal. So the fonts of FF / TB

[Bug 49068] Re: Java reports time zone incorrectly during CDT (US Daylight saving time)

2007-05-04 Thread Mike Green
Look guys, according to sun
(http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/Intl/USDST/):

NOTE: The Java platform's time zone data is completely independent from
your operating system's time zone data. Therefore, you do not need to
update your operating system for the Java platform to work correctly.

From everything I have read it appears that after 1.4.0, java uses its
own internal olson database. It seems to me you might be barking up the
wrong tree by looking into utility classes and such... Why not just
take a look at what Sun is saying you have to do to fix the problem?

Hi Corne,

I doubt my IMAP server is running Scalix. (I'm using my old university
email account, so I don't control the server.) I'll give that plugin a
try, anyhow, the next time Evolution is acting up.

Thanks!
Chris

[Bug 41831] Re: Openoffice in dapper has difficulties to redraw menus and icons

2007-05-04 Thread iGadget
I can confirm this bug still being present in Feisty, although it manifested
itself only after a while.
Feisty is installed here from a clean Kubuntu install, after which the
ubuntu-desktop package was installed and gdm+gnome+metacity became the default
environment (the reason why I installed it like this is IMHO irrelevant to this
bugreport, however if anyone wants to know I'll happily elaborate).

First I thought this problem had something to do with the desktop effects I had
enabled, but turning them off didn't fix the problem.
Renaming any .gtk* files in my home dir and then shutting down the OOo
quickstarter did fix the problem.

It seems that these .gtk* files are generated after a while and are
causing problems. Which program/proces creates these files and why? My
desktop seems to be happy without them (as a matter of fact, it seems to
be better off without them!), so why generate them in the first place?

I also created a theora/ogg video showing the problem clearly, if
anyone's interested.

[Bug 66709] Re: xfdesktop crash on Edgy Eft

2007-05-04 Thread Sancho K.
I can confirm the bug:
After switching around icon themes in Xubuntu (Edgy Eft with latest updates),
the xfce sesktop went down (gmd restarted).
I can still log in to my xfce session, but my desktop seems to be broken (no
panels at all, right-click menu on desktop doesn't work, keyboard shortcuts
don't work). When logging into my gnome sessions I had crash reports waiting
for Thunar, Xfce-desktop and xfce-panel.

[Bug 110881] Re: [SRU] Citical bug cherrypicks from SVN

2007-05-04 Thread Martin Pitt
This still looks fishy:

+-  if (ab-isFinished())
++  if (!ab || ab-isFinished())
+   {
+   ab-deleteLater();

i. e. if ab == NULL, the -deleteLater() will still crash

kubuntu_10_multifile_4GB.patch removes a lot of comments and is a bit
hard to read; this could be stripped down a bit.

The rest looks fine.

/etc/cron.allow and /etc/cron.deny don't exist. I uncommented the line
in syslog.conf to log cron to its own file but left the other reference
to cron in the messages section.

/etc/syslog.conf (abreviated w/ only cron related info):
Code:

/var/log/messages doesn't show anything related to cron, at least since the
last time it rolled over.
/var/log/cron.log shows the user tasks running, and it shows when root edits
crontab, but it doesnt show root's tasks running, nor does it show any cron
related errors.

[Bug 73919] Re: io module is not generally useful

2007-05-04 Thread exarkun
$ sudo apt-get --simulate remove python-stats
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  python-stats ubuntu-desktop
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Remv ubuntu-desktop [0.120]
Remv python-stats [0.6-5ubuntu1]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Regarding the io package itself, it uses up the name io which makes it
hard to use any other Python module or package named io. This would
be fine, except the io package provided by python-stats is pretty
crummy and useless.

[Bug 78078] Re: [feisty] nm gives me an ip even if there is no cable

2007-05-04 Thread Hannes Heller
I have a similar problem:

upgraded from edgy to feisty. network worked fine for several days. SOME
incident then suddenly broke it tis morning (with yet no solution).
the symptomes are: I suddenly get an additional interface eth0:avahi in Network
Tools - Devices. It is one of those, that have a random local IP addressed.
That interface seems to be active but not working. The working setup on my
second machine does not have such an interface. It uses the normal eth0 with
DHCP. The broken machine did use this too before, when it was still working.
Now I would like to know, how I can get rid of this eth0:avahi interface. When
reading through the documentation on networking, i realize, that most of it
seems outdated. The suggestions that are given to solve similar problems dont
work, maybe because something always brings up this avahi interface.

[Bug 112357] Feisty can't access USB ports

2007-05-04 Thread Paul Holbrook
Public bug reported:

I have been using Windows XP and decided to try Ubuntu so I installed
Ubuntu 7.04 with a dual boot. I have a USB attached flash stick and
floppy drive. Ubuntu cannot find either one of these devices. Terminal
command lsusb shows nothing. If I go back and boot XP it can see
both devices and access the files on them.

I am running on a 2 year old Compaq AMD Sempron 3200+ desktop PC

I have posted this problem on the Ubuntu forums and they haven't been
able to help.

[Bug 112358] Hebrew bookmarks are not displayed

2007-05-04 Thread Yaron Tausky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

I'm using Epiphany with an English locale, and I have bookmarks with both
English and Hebrew titles. While the ones with the English titles are displayed
properly in the bookmarks menu, the ones with the Hebrew titles appear as empty
menu items (except for the favicon, for websites that have one). When using a
Hebrew locale I get the opposite problem: Hebrew bookmarks are displayed, and
English ones aren't.
This is a regression from previous versions, in which the bookmarks behaved
properly.

[Bug 107986] Re: Suspend fails to work on Dell Latitude X1

I succeed to hibernate but I must modify the file /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh

Apparently, there might be a conflict between 915resolution and s2disk

[Bug 70223] Re: Internal data flow error.

2007-05-04 Thread hadriw
The problem is not the difficult to fix the problem or not, the problem
is the people realise that they can play the film using this little
click...

If they don't realize that they won't be able to do anything and of
course they will complain. But this is not dificult, because i had the
same problem and i write in google finder Totem ubuntu stream flow and
i find the trick.

So exactly this problem is low importance. But I wish developers can
solve this for the next release, a patch I think is not necesary.

[Bug 112367] ODBCConfig could be a icon on Administration menu

2007-05-04 Thread Francisco de Assis Prates
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unixodbc-bin

Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04

After installing unixodbc-bin package by synaptic, there is no hint how
to execute ODBCConfig or other utilities from the package.

I think an icon on SystemAdministration would be the right think, but
it's up to you.

It would be nice if ODBCConfig suggest us what packages should be
installed in order to have the my database driver working properly.

thanks in advance.

[Bug 112365] RFE: [ubuntu installer and] make-kpkg should be resilient to failure of mkinitramfs

2007-05-04 Thread Marty Vona
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kernel-package

For whatever reason it appears that the initial install of
/usr/sbin/mkinitramfs on one of my systems, as laid down by the ubuntu
7.04 installer, was borked. The file was present, had the same date and
size as on another (working) ubuntu 7.04 system, but would not run.
Attempting to run it gave the error binary file not executable. The
execute bits were set. Further, diff reported that the binary file
contents of /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs *did* differ from the same file on the
other system.

Obviously this is bad. Only explanation I can think of is that there
was some hardware issue, possibly with the cdrom drive or the hard drive
or their respective controllers, during the install. Note: such issues
*do* occur and *do* need to be dealt with if we want our installers to
be truly reliable and usable by everyone. I have (sadly) installed many
many versions of Microsoft operating systems on this particular machine
over the years and have never had such a problem.

What is prompting me to write this RFE in particular is that it took a
lot of sleuthing to find this problem because, apparrently, make-kpkg
(and the ubuntu installer, which I'm assuming is using make-kpkg or
something very similar under the hood, is it?) does not check for such
an error, and does not fail. It simply does not generate the initrd
file, even when --initrd is specified. Attempting to boot the new
kernel then fails of course with the dreaded

kernel panic VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

because there is no initrd file from which the new kernel can get the
necessary filesystem and disk hardware driver modules.

I ran into the problem in two contexts before I discovered the borked
mkinitramfs binary.

First, the original install (from the live cd), which appeared to
complete correctly and fully, and presented me with the usal reboot now
dialog and no particularly worrysome error messages, failed promptly on
reboot with the above kernel panic. I was able to recover from that and
boot the new system only by booting again from the live cd (which takes
forever on this system at least in part due to the live cd kernel timing
out multiple times trying to access a nonexistent floppy drive fd0,
but that issue seems to be already filed) and using the live cd to
manually run mkinitramfs (from the live cd's filesystem, not the borked
mkinitramfs on my hard drive, I still wasn't aware of that at this
point) to generate an initrd into the boot partion on my hard drive. I
noted that the file /boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic.bak was present
on the hard drive boot partition, but that the much more pertinent
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.20-15-generic was *not* present until I manually
created it. I believe I also had to manually add an initrd line to the
relevant stanza in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

That got me booting the new install. But I should not have had to do
that. The installer should have detected the problem and at least
issued a severe warning. At best, it should have used debsums to figure
out that the initramfs-tools install was borked, reinstalled it,
verified that the new install was ok, and then regenerated the initrd. I
may be a bit misled here, of course. Does the installer really use the
mkinitramfs binary on the target filesystem to create the initrd? I'm
assuming it does based on my observations, but I could easily be wrong.
It is definitely true that there was no working initrd on my system
though after the installer claimed to have suceeded (just the .bak
file).

The second context was that, after I got my system to boot, I built a
custom kernel (primarily because the boot with the generic kernel was
still quite slow right at the very beginning, and I suspected that it
was again looking for hardware I didn't actually have, maybe trying to
restore a nonexistent hibernated session or something, wasting my time,
and then timing out) using make-kpkg --initrd. I then installed the
new custom kernel .debs, which appeared to have been created without
errors, and which installed without warning, and again on reboot
promptly got the kernel panic ... unable to boot ... problem. So
again I dug in and found that no initrd was created (in this case there
was neither a .bak file in /boot) nor was an entry for one added to the
stanza for my custom kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst.

At this point I rebooted with the original generic kernel and I finally
ran /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs manually, attempting to generate the missing
initrd, and finally discovered that it was borked. apt-get install
--reinstall initramfs-tools fixed the problem and got me a running
mkinitramfs. [I did not know about debsums at the time.]

Hardware: this is an older (circa 2002) Dell laptop with an Intel IDE
chipset and an internal cdrom module.

Additional note: I eventually found at least one more file which was
borked on install, /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.1200.11. Again the file
was

[Bug 112363] NetworkManager does not play nicely with Cisco wireless APs due to wme_ie being broadcast instead of rsn_ie and/or wma_ie

2007-05-04 Thread GiuseppeVerde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

My university's wireless access points are set to output Cisco-
proprietary configuration information in their beacon packets, namely
wme_ie. They *should* be outputting RSN IE or WPA IE instead, but
there's not much I can do about that aside from begging and pleading
with my university not to continue to be jerks to the non-Windows-using
community.

The Ubuntu side, however, can do something about it. Attached is the
iwlist scan output from each of my wireless cards (dwl-g650 and
ipw2100). You can plainly see a properly configged WPA AP and then the
UI-Wireless-WEP WPA which has an Extra string.

The solution is to do one or both of the following:

   1) Have network-manager look for the wme_ie and understand it

   2) Have the wireless card drivers convert wme_ie to rsn/wpa ie

The problem with 1 is that my ipw2100 card does not pass ANY IE up to
the higher layers (at least, it's not reported in iwlist). The madwifi-
ng card, on the other hand, passes this information on to
NetworkManager, which doesn't know what to do with it.

SYMPTOMS:
The WPA network is not detected as such. Consequently, when clicking on the
network in the GNOME NetworkManager applet, you are only presented with two
options for security: WEP and open.

[Bug 111939] Re: Not possible to alt-tab during a drag-and-drop operation

2007-05-04 Thread tvst
** Description changed:

In some window managers (I believe KWin is one of them) the user is able
to initiate a drag-and-drop operation, then press alt-tab to raise a
- window that will the be drop target, and only then release the mouse
+ window that will be the drop target, and only then release the mouse
button so that the drag-and-drop is performed. This is not possible with
Metacity, Beryl, Compiz or Xfwm. It is unclear to me whether this is a
limitation of the window manager or some other part of the system.

Yes, printing does not work in xaralx (neither under ubuntu 6.10 nor under

the menu item file - printer setup is greyed out (why?).

[Bug 108954] Re: Feisty install fails

2007-05-04 Thread Michael Buchoff
Mine failed as well. After looking at the logs, it appeared it has
something to do with my ATI Mobility X1400:

...
(WW) VESA(0): No valid modes left. Trying less string filter...

Backtrace:
0: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80c5d91]
1: [0xe420]

If anyone trying to fix the installer wants an extra tester, just let me
know.

[Bug 112371] Feisty: perl syscall.ph has wrong syscall numbers on IA32

2007-05-04 Thread Benjamin Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: perl

Perl's syscall() function can be used to make system calls by passing
the syscall number and a list of arguments. The syscall numbers are
defined symbolically in syscall.ph. On 32-bit x86 for Dapper, Edgy,
Sarge, and Etch, these values are correct. On IA-32 Feisty, the syscall
numbers are the values for the AMD64 architecture instead. As a result,
scripts which use the syscall() function on IA-32 Feisty will
inadvertently execute the wrong system calls.

Demo script:

#!/usr/bin/perl
require 'syscall.ph';
print open:   . __NR_open() . \n;
print close:  . __NR_close() . \n;
print sync:   . __NR_sync() . \n;

This will print 5, 6, and 36 on most IA-32 systems, but 2, 3, 162 on
Feisty.

Test case:

#!/usr/bin/perl
require 'syscall.ph';
syscall(SYS_sync);

stracing this script on Feisty will show a call to nanosleep() with
garbage arguments; nanosleep() is syscall 162 on IA-32.
