[Bug 120426] EATA driver does not load after install

2007-06-14 Thread airblade
Public bug reported:

Under the installation it does not detect my disk so i have to choose the EATA
driver/module. It finds my disk and continues to install.
After rebooting, and passing grub, the system fails to find my disk.
This is the output:
Starting up ...
Loading, please wait...
Check root = bootarg cat /proc/cmdline
or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/ (disk uuid) does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

cat /proc/cmdline shows:
root=UUID=(disk uuid) ro quiet splash

cat /proc/modules lists these modules:
ide_cd, cdrom, floppy, tulip, uhci_hcd, usbcore, piix, generic, fbcon,
tileblit, font, bitblit, softcursor, vesafb, capability and commoncap.

uname -a shows:
Linux (none) 2.6.20-15-server #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:26:23 UTC 2007 i686 unknown

Of course, loading the EATA module manually in BusyBox works. And i can access
my disks.
cat /proc/modules now lists these extra modules:
sg, st, sd_mod, eata and scsi_mod.

I have tried upgrading with apt, witch installs the latest kernel:
2.6.20-16-server.
I have also tried to including the modules: sg, st, sd_mod and scsi_mod in
/etc/modules.

Here are some hardware specifications:
Intel SE440BX Motherboard
Intel Pentium II 350MHz, 512KB cache
767MB SDRAM
SCSI controller: DPT PM2144UW
Hard drive: IBM Ultrastar

with my xorg.conf file from my working Feisty install and my Monitor

[Bug 119904] Re: No Bluetooth device found

2007-06-14 Thread Magie Straal
I''v a build in BLuetooth chip. So the lsusb command isn't the right one
I think, because a build in Bluetooth chip isn't a usb device. But maybe
I'm wrong.

I did your steps, there was no difference between the two outputs. And
hcitool dev and scan gave the same output: no devices.

When I press the bluetooth button it doesn't light up. The wireless
button does, so I think that my bluetooth chip is off line. I've checked
my bios, but there is noting about my bluetooth. So I think that the
solution is to turn on the bluetooth chip, but the problem is: how?

thanks Ralf for you help so far.

[Bug 42600] Re: Microphone does not work on Dell Inspiron 630m

2007-06-14 Thread Suzan
I am still testing and I think, I've catched the bad boy - it's
GStreamer!

I thought, my microphone doesn't work at all, but that's wrong. The
microphone works absolutely correct with everything but GStreamer! That
means, any GStreamer related software doesn't work. That's for instance,
gnome-audio-recorder, ekiga or jokosher. In neither of these programs
the microphone work.

BUT it works with software, that doesn't require GStreamer. The
microphone works perfectly with Audacity, Skype and even Ardour! It
works also if I record something with mancoder in the terminal.

So my guess it, that the HDA Intel Chip and Gstreamer have some problems
with each other.

The only gnome-program, that gives me an error is jokosher. It says:

GStreamer encountered a general stream error.

gstbasesrc.c(1642): gst_base_src_loop ():
/timeline/playbackbin/Click_Track_Bin/Click_Track_AudioSource:
streaming task paused, reason not-linked (-1)

I am not sure, if this is an error which depends only Jokosher or
GStreamer at all.

[Bug 119471] Re: 2.6.20-16-generic cannot modprobe nvidia-glx

2007-06-14 Thread gestoned
I did sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-legacy
Then I installed restricted manager and I used it to enable NVIDIA propr driver.
I rebooted. I got empty screen so I shut down kdm via /etc/init.d/kdm stop.
Then I tried to startx and I got API mismatch: NVIDIA kernel module version
1.0.7184, and X module version is 1.0.9631, so I looked into
/lib/linux-restricted-modules and I found .nvidia_new_installed file. I
removed that file and tried startx again. X Window started with correct
acceleration!

Then I logged into my user account and while the display was 1920x1440
the refresh rate was very poor. Kubuntu configuration revealed I run at
56 Hz and the only other option was 50 Hz. After some experimentation I
found that after switching to 50 Hz the monitor appears flicker-free.
Somehow, although KDE KControl says that it runs at 50Hz it actually
runs at 75 Hz.

Thank you for your help. I still believe that this is an error because a
novice would hardly be able to resolve this.

[Bug 99795] Re: heimdal uses wrong path to ldapi-socket

2007-06-14 Thread Matt Mossholder
I think I have narrowed this down. It isn't actually a heimdal problem,
it is a libldap problem. In libldap2 (used by slapd), the ldapi socket
is defined as /var/run/slapd/ldapi , but in lipldap, used by heimdal ,
it is defined as /var/run/ldapi . The mismatch in the defaults is
causing the two not to connect.

[Bug 120432] Quickcam messenger Communicate driver not present

included in feisty and thus these webcams don't work out of the box with

[Bug 118551] Re: Can't install packages without root access

2007-06-14 Thread David Morris
Freddy, I'm aware of this. However on Linux an install generally only
consists of putting the binary and config files into the correct system
wide locations. When installing programs from source you are able to
pass your home dir in via the ./configure command which then allows you
to install within your home dir, if you don't have root access.

This can currently be done by apt-getting the source and building it
yourself. However this isn't the user friendly Ubuntu which I've been
getting used to, and alot of users will be unaware of this option.

[Bug 118593] Re: mouse preferences acceleration not saving

2007-06-14 Thread Bryan McLellan
I've had this issue as well for a while. I've been overriding gnome-
control-center with 'xset m default'.

Mouse speed is normal at gdm. When I log in, it immediately goes to a
crawl. 'xset q | grep accel' reports acceleration: 3/10 threshold: 0.

If I remove .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/%gconf.xml and log
out, the problem does not re-occur on next log in until I open the mouse
applet again. When I first open the mouse applet the slider is in the
middle. If I move it, it goes to the left and my mouse speed is back to
3/10. When running gnome-control-panel in the foreground of a shell, the
mouse applet reports:

(gnome-mouse-properties:8550): capplet-common-WARNING **: Unable to find a
default value for key for /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/motion_acceleration.
I'll assume it is an integer, but that may break things.
Please be sure that the associated schema is installed

(gnome-mouse-properties:8550): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_free:
assertion `value != NULL' failed

(gnome-mouse-properties:8550): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_get_float:
assertion `value-type == GCONF_VALUE_FLOAT' failed

After modification of the acceleration slider,
.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/%gconf.xml contains the following
line (among others):

entry name=motion_acceleration mtime=1181840944
type=float value=0.2000298023224

Note that 'xset q | grep accel' returns acceleration: 2/1 and threshold:
4 after 'xset m default'

It may be worth noting that I have a similar problem with keyboard
autorepeat.

[Bug 33762] Re: Appletouch trackpad unbearably slow

2007-06-14 Thread Tim Hull
OK - I've managed to fix this for all OSs, and in all cases.

Make the following changes to the default Xorg.conf:

1. Change

Option SendCoreEvents true

in the Synaptics section to

Option CorePointer

2. Change

InputDevice Configured Mouse

at the end of the file to

InputDevice Configured Mouse SendCoreEvents

3. Move

InputDevice Synaptics Touchpad

to before the Configured Mouse Line

4. Restart X

After doing so, you should be able to adjust pointer acceleration as you
wish.

[Bug 120219] Re: Wish: enable full ZFS support in Gutsy

2007-06-14 Thread lefty.crupps
As I have followed up on this more, it seems that Linus himself would
like the ZFS but is wary of Sun and concerned with the licensing
incompatibilities. Ubuntu seems more pragmatic, where if the code is
useful it should be included, with a hope for future Free software to
replace the closed-source. ZFS might be just that.

My suggestion to Ubuntu is to implement ZFS anyways (is this possible?)
either into the kernel or as a module for Ubuntu, and then write an app
similar to Apple's TimeMachine to take advantage of this file system.
Then, use the ZFS as the default file system and present the new
TimeMachine-type app with first-boot, along with an intro screen that
explains the concept and its benefits, and how to do it.

Please consider this, and consider it (time machine app) for ALL of the
Ubuntu family (K/X/Edu/Ubuntu) as I am tired of innovation for Kubuntu
being three steps behind Ubuntu

[Bug 99795] Re: heimdal uses wrong path to ldapi-socket

2007-06-14 Thread Matt Mossholder
Here's the proof, although I had the package names a little off... it is
a difference between libldap-2.3-0 and libldap2

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ strings /usr/lib/libldap_r.so.2 | grep var/run
/var/run/slapd/params_cache_rsa
/var/run/slapd/params_cache_dh
/var/run/ldapi

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ strings /usr/lib/libldap-2.3.so.0 | grep var/run
/var/run/slapd/ldapi

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg-query -S /usr/lib/libldap-2.3.so.0
libldap-2.3-0: /usr/lib/libldap-2.3.so.0

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg-query -S /usr/lib/libldap_r.so.2
libldap2: /usr/lib/libldap_r.so.2

Can we get the default changed on libldap2 like it was on libldap-2.3?

[Bug 120438] Open office crashes with multiple windows open after paste from firefox

2007-06-14 Thread Mike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I copied and pasted text from Westlaw.com on firefox to OOo. The text
had a lot of hyperlinks in it, and it made OOo run slowly. The crashes
occur with no warning, and no immediately apparent cause. Everything
restores just fine afterwards.

** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 119831] Re: Installing custom ppd dosen't work

2007-06-14 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
just the model dosen't appear in the supported models list during new printer
 installation
Please attach the PPD you used to this bug report.

I don't know, whether THAT driver is used, or the custom PPD.
You can check if your custom PPD and /etc/cups/ppd/printername.ppd are
identical by running the following command:
$ diff -us custom.ppd /etc/cups/ppd/printername.ppd

[Bug 120201] Re: Printing problem

2007-06-14 Thread Pascal De Vuyst
Thanks for your bug report, more information is needed.
Please attach the output of the printingbug info script, it can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript.
Also attach your cups error_log by using the next steps:
1. Edit the file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, find the line LogLevel and change it to
debug, save the file.
2. Restart CUPS from a terminal:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
3. Try to print something using the photo to fit paper option.
4. Attach /var/log/cups/error_log to the bug report.

I can confirm this bug on Feisty amd64. It launched the recovery

anyone helps me, as I'm new.
