[Bug 121479] Re: Please sync xorg-docs (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2007-06-22 Thread Bryce Harrington
The only ubuntu changes were trivial tweaks: maintainer field, packaging
copyright statement, and specifying pkg-config build-depends version
(which isn't really necessary - I'm just being picky).

Debian has done some major reorganization of the package, which makes
the merge complicated. It will be easier to just sync the package and
add the tweaks back later.

[Bug 117773] Re: Regression: Kernel 2.6.20-16 breaks Smart-battery ACPI support

2007-06-22 Thread bugmenot
Here the same, since a few weeks ago. Using an Acer Travelmate 4002WLMi.

Is there any way to help in order to have a fixed release soon?

It's really very annoying not being able to know how much battery it's
left, until the computer switches off itself.

PD. I think that if Ubuntu wants to be able to be used by normal people
it shouldn't have this kinds of problems, or at least, have a fast fix.

Re: [Bug 56692] Re: ATI radeon: poor 3D performance

2007-06-22 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
I've done some tests with nexuiz (a full 3d game, quite intensive for
my video card)

without the option disable low impact fallback it is not playable,
after enabling it I got nearly 60fps, sometimes with 1 second hangs,
but the situation is not so bad...
I think the key for 3d games is this option! I think that I should see
the fps when using fglrx, but now it can't be used due to a X version
mismatch

After launching google earth with the option enabled, the system
hangs, as I reported before (a hard reboot is needed)

compiz does not take any advantage from this option :( it is sad
because compiz performance is quite bad!
scrolling is very slow (though improved) the animations are quite
huggy, and everything is highly dependent on the cpu usage of the
moment

also take a look ad this Xorg.0.log line
(II) RADEON(0): Render acceleration unsupported on Radeon 9500/9700 and newer.
(II) RADEON(0): Render acceleration disabled

I had this same problem in Gutsy.
Here's my solution:

1. Open Synaptic

2. Highlight ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-minimal

3. In the menu, select Package>Lock version

4. Click Mark all Upgrades and Apply (let the upgrade complete)

5. Highlight ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-minimal once more

6. Unselect Lock version.

(to make sure everything's in working order after this, you can run
"sudo apt-get check")

[Bug 121802] facebook.com with ubuntu firefox - java

2007-06-22 Thread schnaxl
Public bug reported:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.4) Gecko/20060601
Firefox/2.0.0.4 (Ubuntu-edgy)

If I want to create an album or search friends firefox crashes.
Installing java is complicated. How can I do this? It should be standard.

[Bug 121799] GRUB mixes up HDDs of different type

2007-06-22 Thread FredrikS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I just installed Feisty from the Live CD. I have two hard drives, one on
which I installed Ubuntu now (SATA), and another, where I have Windows
(IDE). Now, after installing Ubuntu Feisty, GRUB apparently couldn't
handle having two hard drives of different type, and so it mixed them
up. In /boot/grub/menu.lst, it switched the first HDDs entry to (hd1,0)
instead of (hd0,0) which is the correct entry, and vice versa for the
Windows entry.

Simple to solve if you're familiar with GRUB, but Joe would probably be
too intimidated by this.

[Bug 121797] Democracy Player hung on startup after Yahoo! video search

2007-06-22 Thread Tom Haddon

[Bug 38442] Re: MASTER: Doesn't support < 1024x768 resolutions

2007-06-22 Thread BusDriver
Henrik,

Thank you for your acknowledgement and escalation of this issue. Your comments
are appreicated and duly noted.
However, I believe that we will have to agree to disagree here.

That it took over a year for a "prevents Installation" issue over a year
to become a "High" priority item, just isn't okay.

I appreciate your comments about impact levels and tone, but really,
we've been quite generous.

Those of us posting here took the time to research our own problems, and
spent the time ON the forums to find out this was a bug issue. We then
took the time to find this thread, and post to you about them. This
issue has already spilled over FROM the forums, so that should have been
a clue to you. How many people posting on this bug were relatively new
users?

We are only trying to help the Ubuntu community to be stronger, and we deserve
your understanding of our frustration.
Everyone here has the same goal to make Ubuntu better. But until today, with
this escalation, the issue had been largely ignored.

True, this is only one bug, but it is a larger issue is of image for
Ubuntu.

When any new person (with old or unrecognzied hardware) gets introduced
to Ubuntu, and this issue is the SECOND thing that they ever experience
from it (possibly unsurmountable) it sets a poor tone for quality right
away, and leaves a bad taste for what Ubuntu is about if they
understandably they walk away in frustration.

Every person out there with "unrecognized" vid hardware (lots) or gets
defaulted to 640x480 will be affected by the install screen design
oversights above.

I submit that you have no truly accurate metrics on ATTEMPTED Ubuntu
installtions, and that the issue is larger than the Ubuntu developers
assume. You do not have the user impact data to classify this as a
"small portion" of users - because they never could install it to become
users. (For the record on issues above the "TABBING" technique to
navigate around the pages and find the cursor or 'Next' button didn't
work for my install - I tried that. Only the Alt-LeftDrag screen
technique did.)

Unfortunately the inaction on this left me professionally frustrated,
with no other choice but to make a row where you could hear us on your
bug reporting tool instead of the forums - which we had done already.
If we hurt your feelings, or stepped on your toes, then sorry - but the
end justified the means, and I believe you know this. We are all
working towards the same goals, and wish to see you succeed. I will not
be posting any more on this topic, and am out of your hair. Thank you
for your time. Good luck to us all.

[Bug 81137] Re: [Feisty] suspend and hibernate fail on MB Asrock K8NF6G-VSTA

2007-06-22 Thread ullix
The problem is NOT solved. I have upgraded the bios to 1.60 and made the
adjustments as specified by Loic Martin above. No further modifications to the
bios defaults. The cpu is a Sempron 2800. The uname -1 response is:
Linux ... 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

When I go into suspend, the computer seems to go into suspend mode. The
power light of the computer is flashing green. To awake, I only have to
click the left (right does not work) mouse button. But the display
never gets activated and remains dark; the display LEDs indicate no-VGA-
signal

The motherboard also has no sound under feisty, so I couldn't say if
anything goes on at all. Keyboard at least responds with Numlock light
going on and off when num button pressed.

When hibernating the computer goes off, and can be restarted with the
power button. After a few flashes of distorted Kubuntu logos, the
display LEds show it is active, but dark. Moving the mouse brings up the
login box, and I can login and continue where I left off.

I am not exactly thrilled with feisty on this mb.

After plugging the mouse back in, it still does not work. Any new usb

silently.

I am going to try unloading ohci-hcd when the problem appears next. Boot
options also remain to be tested.

The kernel ist custom built based on ubuntus linux-source-2.6.20-16.29.
The only change I made was to activate verbose usb debugging messages.

[Bug 108928] Re: Scrambled Keys in feisty ubuntu desktop

2007-06-22 Thread eremos
"Me too".

It works fine when I switch to standard X server (with automatic logon)
and log in via shared desktop, but when I change gdm's X server to Xvnc
I can log in okay but once gnome starts up it goes wonky again.

When I switch from Xvnc to X I get this message:
The X system keyboard settings differ from your current GNOME keyboard settings.
Expected was model "pc105", layout "us" and no options, but the the following
settings were found: model "generic", layout "us" and no options.
Which set would you like to use?

The bug occurs regardless of which option I choose.

Expected was model "generic", layout "us" and no options, but the the following

In the end Labanana's hack worked for me as well.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 110152 ***

micah: Thanks, that led me in the right direction. And you replied
really fast. Wow.

Regarding your comment on the other bug
'addius: I'm actually more interested in whether the mismatch between feisty
and feisty-security was caused by manual editing or not;'

I can say: I had no entry feisty-security entry in my
/etc/apt/sources.list whatsoever. So when I took a look at the synaptic
repositories settings I noticed that the box

'Important security updates (feisty-securtiy)' was unchecked.

I really cant remember unchecking it, so I guess it was unchecked by
default. (Or it was another program that edited my sources.list, but I
doubt it, I only use synaptic and update-manager, at least consciously,
for package management.) Had this box been checked, I would not have
encountered problems installing vim-gnome in the beginning.

I don't know if that's worth a new bug report, but probably the issue is
worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks for your quick help, really made my day.

[Bug 121792] evdev not working with multiple X instances

2007-06-22 Thread BullCreek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

I'm building a carpc using feisty. I want my two kids in the back to be
able to watch/play independent movies/games, and my prius has a touch
screen that I'm interfacing into in the front for music. Three separate
video cards (built-in geforce 4, and two PCI geforce 5200s). Everything
works fine when I run the servers one at a time via:

% X -novtswitch -sharevts -Layout0 :0
% X -novtswitch -sharevts -Layout1 :1
% X -novtswitch -sharevts -Layout2 :2

This tells me that my xorg.conf (attached) is setup correctly. However,
if I leave server :0 running, and then start server :1 the mouse and
keyboard in server :0 stop working but work fine in server :1.
Similarly, if I then start server :2, the mouse and keyboard stop
working in server :1 but work fine in server :2 (you see the trend - the
mouse and keyboard only work in the last X server started).

I'm not sure if this is a bug in the X server or evdev, but I'm betting
the latter. For a lengthy thread with more background on multi-seat X
using multiple USB mice and keyboards, see:

http://blog.chris.tylers.info/index.php?/archives/14-Multiseat-X-Under-
X11R6.97.0.html

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Bug 121793] "lock screen" option doesn't work (always locks)

2007-06-22 Thread tvst
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Steps to reproduce:
1) go to "system > preferences > screensaver"
2) uncheck "lock screen when screensaver is active"
3) close
Then, when the screensaver goes on and you move the mouse or press a key to
resume your session, you are prompted for your password even though the
checkbox in step (2) is unchecked.

I solved this by changing the gnome-power-manager options like so: I
opened gconf-editor, navigated to "/apps/gnome-power-manager/" then
unchecked "lock_on_blank_screen" and checked
"lock_use_screensaver_settings". so now the screen locking follows the
behavior set in the screensaver gui as it should have in the first
place.

This is a fairly small bug, and the solution is to make sure
"lock_use_screensaver_settings" is checked by default in Gnome.

[Bug 121791] System freeze randomly

2007-06-22 Thread Horatiu
Public bug reported:

The system freezes randomly. I read all other bug reports about system
freeze but in almost all cases they had some special configurations or
running firefox. To me it happens either when I have gaim opened and
chatting with a friend, or when I'm watching a movie with Totem movie
player(it's the only application opened). It happened with VLC also but
that was on Beryl and maybe this is not the case. In another report i
read about a system freeze with Network Manager turned on. I deselected
it now. I hope that was the problem. That's all. Thanks for all your
work. It's my first linux based OS, but I love it :).

[Bug 116787] Re: [apport] gs-esp crashed with SIGSEGV in gdev_x_map_rgb_color()

2007-06-22 Thread John Carlyle-Clarke
Having logged out and logged back in, I re-intalled the .debs for gs-
gpl. I can't remove gs-esp without causing a real headache in the
package manager. I then fired up kghostview and in the options changed
the setting for the interpreter from "gs" to "gs-gpl". kghostview
renders the file as normal, and when I switch to Greyscale in the
settings, I get a crash from gs-gpl.

I hope this was the right thing to do, but since this is now a different
package, I've submitted the apport bug report as #116787.

Re: [Bug 117824] Re: Nibbles respawn into wall issues

2007-06-22 Thread dmeans08
No, the issue I noted is that on those levels, once you die, the human
players worm starts in the initial location, but heading in a different
direction then it did at the level start. This different direction results
in the worm heading towards a wall very quickly, usually quickly enough that
the worm loses at a minimum of two lives before I can change direction. I
know it is not another worm issue because I set the computer players to 1
and I have seen this happen often and consistently on the noted levels
despite the computer worm having 10 lives (at game end computer worm will
still have lives and I will not).Essentially what I noted is that the
worms should, upon loss of a life, restarting in level start location- going
the same direction.

The sound still works if I plug my phones in the jack output.
The fix change the HIBERNATE_MODE=platform instead of =shutdown in
/etc/default/acpi-support works.

Okay. It does work. The last git url i pasted is specifically for the
Q. Anyone who is using this for their Q, do not have it connected to
your laptop when you start modem link, the cdc-acm driver will not
detect your phone and /dev/ttyACM0 will not be created. Start the Modem

The same happens not only with vim-gnome but with vim:

sudo apt-get install vim

tells

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

[Bug 59116] Re: language input/display support metapackages (without translations)

2007-06-22 Thread Micah Cowan
That has nothing to do with your bug description, which states: "Ubuntu
should make translations and input/display support packages available
separately." They are already available separately. Your use cases
indicate that someone should be able to install input support for
French, Chinese and Persian, without localizing their system and
installing translations. This too, is already quite possible.

"Having to figure out which packages I need to install to get Chinese
language input and display support" may indeed be a problem; but it has
nothing to do with your original bug report. Also, it wouldn't qualify
as a bug, but a feature request; as such, I would encourage you to
submit a feature specification to make this easier to do:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications . If you do create a
feature spec, please notify me, as I would be interested in seeing this
happen as well (currently, it is necessary to do some searching on the
wiki for information on how to do this).

[Bug 121687] Re: Confusing message for fsck check at boot

2007-06-22 Thread Theodore Ts'o
The problem is that "boots" is not accurate. A filesystem can be
mounted at other times than just at boot up. For example, if you have a
USB exnternal disk, it will get mounted each time you insert it into
your system. In addition, on larger systems there may be multiple
partitions and filesystems, and so it's not "your hard disk", it's a
specific filesystem. And we deliberately stagger things so that if you
have multiple filesystems, we don't check them all at one time.

In any case, there are many, many messages that get printed at boot
time, and not all of them make sense to the newbie user. If Ubuntu
wants to put some pretty graphical interface over e2fsck, great, but the
suggested changes don't at all make sense for experienced system
administrators who *do* care about this kind of detail, and taking away
useful information is uncool.

[Bug 121787] Rhino is missing some classes

2007-06-22 Thread Aaron Maenpaa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhino

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ rhino
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
org/mozilla/javascript/tools/shell/Main

It appears that the "tools" classes are not included in the js.jar that
is available through apt. Unfortunately, the main class of js.jar is
org/mozilla/javascript/tools/shell/Main which is a "tools" class.
Consequently, when one invokes `rhino` on the command line we are
greeted by an Exception. This can be easily remedied by building the
JAR from source as the JAR distributed by Mozilla doesn't seem to
include the "tools" classes.

[Bug 121772] Re: dash improperly parses "\\n"

2007-06-22 Thread Micah Cowan
Thanks for your bug report.

As opposed to bash's or coreutils' echo, dash's echo is actually
conformant to POSIX/SUS. Since this is a conformance issue, and not a
bug, they will not be changing it: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=167893;archive=yes

The echo command is notoriously unportable across different shells and
environments. If you want to use echo portably, you should never use any
options (POSIX forbids them in general, but allows -n to be supported
either as an option or an argument; XSI requires it be interpreted as a
string argument); and you should never use backslashes (SUSv3 requires
them to be special, as in dash; POSIX allows either behavior, and
historically, System V interpreted them while treating -n as a string,
while BSD does not interpret them and treats -n as an option). In all
but the simplest of cases, printf(1) is much more preferable, being much
more consistent across implementations.

To be just a little clearer: for the _specific_ example you give above,
both versions of echo are complying with POSIX, but only dash is
complying with SUSv3. If you were to add the -n option, neither would be
complying with SUS. If you were to further add some other option, such
as -e, then only dash would be complying with POSIX.
