I have this issue too - not terribly often, but it happens. Firefox
sometimes greys out for a bit, which is normal, but sometime instead of
responding again with color, it responds still greyed out. A temporary
fix is to restart firefox.

[Bug 149514] Re: Pidgin is too unstable to be the default IM client for Ubuntu

2007-10-11 Thread D S
Compiz is certainly an interesting wm. After 4 days of testing (since
your comment) with metacity, I've come to the conclusion that you have a
point (i.e. that compiz is an issue).

Under metacity, when I click a tab or hit a conversation menu I get a
pause of 1.5 seconds + before the operation completes (if it completes).
Under metacity, pidgin is recovering 95% of the time after the pause. So
I think you are definately correct that compiz is having a deleterious
effect on pidgin, causing a mere bathing in oil to be fatal.

The change to metacity also reduced the number of crashes caused by
changing avatar by over half.

That said, to receive a 1.5 second + pause in a GUI on a Dual Core T7400
when the system is under no load and to have nothing happen after that
pause, repeatedly, indicates an issue with the design. That gui events
appear to hit a libpurple event loop, before there is any indication of
what is going on (if anything), is problematic for the user: at least if
that user is me with a high latency network connection.

The fact that I'm pleased that the switch to metacity has reduced the
extremely high crash rate to something approaching usable is maybe an
indication of the state of pidgin.

I've also been testing out empathy. It's simple but it's responsive. I
would hope that for the next LTS, pidgin is a distant memory, and one of
the upcoming telepathy clients is the default.

[Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode

2007-10-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Good to hear this patch is working for all who tested it. Remember,
it's not intended to address the issue when playing Xv, that is a
separate (but possibly related) bug. Peter Clifton has been working on
investigating this.

Can someone research and find out what the loop is used for? If we can
sort that out by the weekend, I'll put together an official fix to
hopefully get out either by Gutsy final, or in the first batch of
updates.

If possible, please test again using the latest CD images

the --debug option (`ubiquity --debug` in a terminal). I believe the
problem is fixed, but if you run into any issues, please update this bug

live CD after the installer crashes.

Thanks!

[Bug 124773] Re: fsck freezes on laptop

2007-10-11 Thread Reuben Firmin
OK, latest update to this: the problem is still in gutsy. I haven't yet
run fsck on the images you suggested making, but will do so.

In the meantime, my laptop was a brick for 3 days during a technical
conference, when I _really_ would have appreciated having it be
functional, so I'm going to argue your points. Yes, there's a bug in
fsck which caused it, and sure, when you fix the bug, I won't need the
skip option...until the next time there's a bug like this, when another
user on another computer with some weird hardware or bios configuration
hits a similar snag.

> Part of the problem that I'm concerned about is that the vast majority
of Ubuntu users are less experienced that say Debian users.

So? As my friend points out, Windows users are a good deal less
experienced that Ubuntu users, and yet *they* can skip scandisk. Heresy,
I know, to compare scandisk with fsck, and yet there users have a
choice. I think to deny users a choice is anti-freedom, and autocratic.
Your thinking on this analagous to Microsoft's forcing of system updates
on its users; "we know best; this is for your own good; shut up and
swallow it, buckwad."

I am not suggesting that the option to skip fsck be so obvious as to
make it easy for "noobs" to cancel it every time. In fact, you could
even display horrible warnings when the user does skip it. But, if the
user wants to completely wreck their computer by skipping maintenance
steps, then let them. You are not their parent, nanny, dictator, or any
other authority.

> So if the filesystem is corrupted such that if the system is booted,
the "mission critical" application would silently give the wrong
answers, or perhaps trade the wrong stocks, or give the 1000 times the
amount of X-rays necessary to the human body, would you really be doing
the user a favor by giving them the ability to skip an fsck because they
are impatient?

But we're not talking about computers that are monitoring nuclear power
plants, or running vital infrastructure; we're talking about average
everyday joe who wants to check his email, show off some presentations
at work, write documents, etc. Just as you wouldn't require average
everyday joe to fill out a 30 point checklist every time they boot the
system to make sure everything is in order, you shouldn't force "mission
critical" level maintenance checks on him either.

> Then too, if you really want to avoid long delays due to periodic
fsck's, the right answer is to use devicemapper, and have a cron script
fired during the off-hours (say 1am on Sunday nights, when no one is
using the system)

This is not the right answer on a laptop, or an average user's desktop.
In these cases, the user powers down their computer on a regular basis.

There are two ways I could see doing the workaround (which is completely
seperate to the issue of this bug), which would make power users happy, and
keep your noobs in line:
1) Add a boot option that skips fsck. Perhaps "safe mode" on ubuntu would
include this, perhaps not.
2) Add a thread that listens for a key sequence (ctrl c?); when it detects the
sequence, display a nasty message, and only abort the scan if the user confirms
that they're willing to die for want of their system being properly fsck'ed.

Again, I understand the importance of fsck, and I understand that it
should be run regularly. However, I also think that there are legitimate
reasons for users wanting to skip it on occasion, and that you should
provide for these, *from pre-boot*, rather than forcing the user to hack
the fstab or use tune2fs *post boot*.

Thanks

[Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it

The following comment was written 1st October:-

Excellent suggestions. Regarding the "upstream priority of normal" -
why is this causing the bug to remain unfixed for 6 years now. 6
years! What must people switching to Ubuntu think?

I was speaking to someone just this week who was thinking of switching
to Ubuntu from XP and actually advised them against it as i considered
ubuntu to not yet be ready for mainstream use. It's precisely because
of bugs like this that leads me to this opinion.

[Bug 151351] Re: Corrupted screen on G33 with -14 kernel; regression from -13

2007-10-11 Thread Loïc Minier
After clarification with Kyle, turns out the kernel should only have
been accepted with the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver at the same time,
with the patch for G33 reverted too; reassigning. Confirming because
Kyle told me it's expected to be broken in this combination.

2007-10-11 Thread Michael Lustfield
cabernet54: You're English is much better than some people that only

It's working here. If it's working for my crappy hardware, I think it
will work for everybody. From Michael Vogt's description it sounds like
the bug was fixed as much as possible and more so masked past that and
being worked on for upstream.

7 days before release, congratulations. Hopefully the rest of the bugs
are solved before release and equally well.

[Bug 145400] Re: gedit consumes 100% processor with paragraphs > 10 lines.

2007-10-11 Thread muntyan
Good, now the picture is much more clear. I guess the problem is that the
engine removes/applies tags and that makes re-wrapping harder (text styles
change text width/height, so it's worse than simple text with no styles at all).
If anyone feels like playing with it, profiling would be of great help: sysprof
will do well here (you need gtksourceview built with debuggin symbols, like
described here: http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces)

[Bug 127101] Re: laptop hangs when switching video mode

2007-10-11 Thread Thomas Liebetraut
With the xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.1.1-0ubuntu7~bwh1_i386.deb package,
I experience the same as the others here, no gray blocks when switching
to VT, Xv acceleration works, compiz works. However, when I switch to
VT1 after playing a video with Xv and then switch back to VT7, I get a
blue screen instead of the Xv video just like Jose. But the X server
does not restart after a few seconds, but it freezes the syste, no
Ctrl+Alt+BackSp, no ACPI power off, no SysRq.

I'm running GDM and have a completely KDE-free system but I also
experienced the gray blocks bug before, so I don't think the bug depends
on the display manager used.

[Bug 151613] [security] Pidgin XMPP TLS/SSL Man in the Middle attack

2007-10-11 Thread John Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: at

As per http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/3381 the Pidgin IM client does
not properly implement SSL and TLS, particularly components dealing with
feedback to the end user.

The client gives the end user no method of determining the validity of
the certificate; in cases where a server presents invalid or self-signed
certificates, Pidgin operates as normal. As a result, any man-in-the-
middle attack can handshake with the server and with the client (using a
fake certificate) and perform a decrypt-recrypt process to read the
data-- including message text and plaintext passwords-- in plain text.

No proof of concept for this specific attack exists. Those wishing to
write one can create an Ettercap plug-in

[Bug 137753] Re: strigidaemon needs exclude lists, defaults eat up too many resources

2007-10-11 Thread Sun Wukong
Same for me here with Gutsy beta 64 bits on a Core2Duo, 2Gb RAM system.

Strigi slowly eats up CPU% up to 100%, stealing one core for itself and none
else. Thanks for those new dual-core chips otherwise the system will hang on.
But this is not the way it should be. Indexing should start when the PC is
idle, and stop when user activity starts again. At least, this should be the
default behaviour, probably with a warning for the user when he searches for
something and everything hasn't been indexed yet.

[Bug 151615] Changing picture in Gwenview with scrollwheel doesn't work with svg-files

2007-10-11 Thread Claes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwenview

If you have multiple pictures in a folder and are viewing a svg or svgz file,
you can't change picture with the scrollwheel on the mouse. You can change file
the Page Up & Page Dn button on the keyboard, you can change
picture with the arrowbuttons in the program but you can't change picture with
the scrollwheel.
I've tested with gif, jpeg, pgm, png, tif & xcf files but this is only a
problem with svg/svgz files.

[Bug 116326] Re: No audio INTEL HD audio - Realtek ALC268 codec - Toshiba A205-S4577

2007-10-11 Thread Cimmo
Mahdi:
kernel 2.6.23 will never reach Gutsy, because it's only 6 days distance for
final.
That kernel and probably a newer one will be in Gutsy+1.

So all that we can ask for now is if Fred's patch will reach Gutsy.

[Bug 135149] Re: [gutsy] failed to unmount migrationassistant

2007-10-11 Thread Evan Dandrea
Can those of you who are experiencing this bug please test using the
latest daily desktop CD (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/),
running the installer from a terminal with the --debug option (`ubiquity
--debug`)? Please report back if this is or is not still occurring, and
if the former, attach /var/log/installer/debug and /var/log/syslog from
the live CD environment following these instructions:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs. I'm especially
keen on knowing of cases where you cannot possibly continue, that is,
the installer hangs or crashes.

Thanks a lot!

Feisty.
