[Bug 154050] Re: adept_batch does not stop when it's window is closed

2007-11-01 Thread Marco Maini
Thanks for your report. I don't think this is a bug. It's clear that
Adept can't stop the configuration or installation of packages when you
close the window. This can broke installation/configuration of packages
and in some cases make your system unusable. However, further details
about your issue are welcome.

[Bug 159312] linux-2.6.22-14-generic kernel hangs during boot

2007-11-01 Thread Kurt
Public bug reported:

linux-image-2.6.20-16 boots w/o issues with feisty. The ipw2200 card
works.

The linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic from gutsy hangs during boot. The only
way to boot successfully is appending acpi=off to the kernel
commandline. Unfortunately the ipw2200 fails to work with this option
enabled.

I would like to upgrade to gutsy but this bug is a show-stopper.

[Bug 159315] Assumes theme background colour is white.

2007-11-01 Thread Patrick Wigmore
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When using any desktop colour scheme that uses a colour other than white
as the background colour for text boxes and the like, OpenOffice.org
uses the non-white background colour where it is inappropriate to do so.

I am using KDE, so the colour schemes in question are KDE colour
schemes. I have not attempted to reproduce the bug in other desktop
environments.

To reproduce the bug, simply change the desktop colour scheme to one
that has a non-white colour as the background colour (e.g. the preset
"Dark Blue") and then start, for example, OpenOffice.org Writer or
Impress.

The bug has existed for some time, so I think it has probably always
been present.

For the purposes of this bug, I define "inappropriate usage of the non-
white background colour" as being situations where the screen display is
supposed to be providing a WYSIWYG view of a document as it would be
printed or presented and where the ultimate background colour is
intended to be white, but where instead the non-white, colour scheme
colour is used to display the document.

This is not to say that documents should always have a white background,
but paper is nearly always white (and documents printed as if it is) and
it is silly to design a presentation on a dark blue background when it
will be presented with a white one.

As far as I am aware, there are no situations where the non-white colour
gets transferred to the printout or, in the case of a presentation, on-
screen presentation of the document.

Examples of the bug include the normal Print Layout in Writer (I'd argue
it doesn't matter or is even expected behaviour in Web View) and, as far
as I know, all the views in Impress, save for the slide presentation
itself and the animation previews.

A partial workaround is to set the Document Background colour to White
and Font Colour to Black under Options > OpenOffice.org > Appearance.
This rectifies the problem in Writer, but not in Impress or Draw. This
is ironic, as Writer is probably the least important of these three for
the workaround to work on. There might also be other colours that need
changing in those settings to make the workaround complete. For Impress
and Draw, the page colour must be set for the specific presentation or
drawing and the "Colour" view mode specifically selected over Greyscale
or Black and White.

The resolution for this bug would be to totally disregard the desktop
colour scheme for anything that represents or affects how a finished
document will look, because this is not useful behaviour.

[Bug 159311] Evolution does NOT open

2007-11-01 Thread Larry Z
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I am new to Ubuntu. To keep things simple, I try to start Evolution from
both the panel and Applications-->Internet-->Evolutions Mail and see
"Starting Evolution Mail" at the bottom of the screen for about 5 to 10
seconds, then it disappears. That's it. I looked at other questions but
do not see anything similar. I tried to open it in terminal and get
this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ evolution

(evolution-2.10:6620): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: instance of invalid non-
instantiatable type `(null)'

(evolution-2.10:6620): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data:

assertion `E_IS_SOURCE_GROUP (group)' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

On the more complicated side, I installed Ubuntu 7.04 the other day.
Everything worked fine. I saw some update and unfortunately updated to
Ubuntu 7.10 and things went wacky. A bunch of stuff no longer worked
right. Evolution would open but the send/receive was not operational. I
am not sure whether this was before or after the update.

I do not know if this may be relevant. I set Evolution to leave mail on
the server. I created a couple folders in my Evolution inbox and saved a
couple messages there. I went into Windows and retrieved my email there
where it gets deleted from the server. It may have been after that when
send/receive stopped working.

Anyway, there were too many other problems in 7.10. I uninstalled Ubuntu
in Windows and reinstalled 7.04 from wubi-save. Things appear to be
working OK now except that Evolution does not open. I believe it was
after the Ubuntu reinstallation that it would not open at all.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

[Bug 102408] Re: Evince opens ALSA library

2007-11-01 Thread pierz
I have seen evince hold on to the audio device - Though I have only seen
it after evince has been launched by Firefox - unfortunately it seems
that Firefox does not close file descriptors when it spawns helper apps
- hence if firefox has the audio dev open (quite often the case - e.g.
after using Flash etc) then evince inherits the open audio descriptor
and hangs onto it - even after Firefox is closed. In fact it happens
with any app started by Firefox.

It would appear that this bug has been reported on Firefox bugzilla but
not fixed yet??! See:

[Bug 158891] Re: Bluefish won't open Firefox as external viewer.

2007-11-01 Thread romanoskar
1) tried changing it to 'firefox' - that doesn't work either. Iceweasel
is currently not in the gutsy repositories so I can't try that.

2) The gnome-bin package was not installed, however installing it didn't fix it.
I don't know how my browser needs to be configured to allow to be started with
that particular line in bluefish. Everything is Gutsy Default. I wouldn't have
thought that this is something that needs extra packages and configuration,
after all I can open an URL from evolution or Pigdin without problems. What
Bluefish does shouldn't be very different.

Well I don't know if its a bug. But it is an important part of the
program that stopped working from one Release of Ubuntu to the next. If
its not a bug, where should I post it?

Prevu uses --use-pdebuild-internal, which implicitly sets the

[Bug 159309] Gutsy (k)ubuntu 7.10 on notebook HP nx6110: lid state incorrect after close-reopen

2007-11-01 Thread Filippo Pagin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.15

This problem interests both ubuntu 7.10 and kubuntu 7.10 (although in
different ways).

I have a notebook HP nx6110 (linux certified).

When I close the lid the screen is correctly turned off. Neverthless when the
lid is reopened the system ignores this fact and continue to act as if the lid
were still closed.
In kubuntu the screen is turned on for few seconds and then turn off again. The
movement of the mouse cause a lighting followed by a sudden turning off.
In ubuntu the screen turn on correctly but programs, like "gnometris", randomly
enter in paused mode.

The problem never come with earlier versions. And is really annoying in
kubuntu.

Besides it seems that the system also has problems to enter automatic
suspension.

A Thanks anticipated, for the support that you will want to give me.

[Bug 159248] Re: Microphone does not work in Gutsy 7.10 64bit

I confirm this behavior.

Currently running Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10, amd64) on ASUS P5NSLI, Intel Core 2 Duo
E6420, 2GB RAM.
I've tried all settings in Volume Control, alsamixer, alsamixergui and qamix,
and have also attempted to change settings in /etc/esound/esd.conf.

Still no microphone output, and testing Sound capture in System > Sound >
Devices tab yields the following (for ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture)
:
"Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert !
audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'"

When selecting Test Sound from the Sound capture drop-down box and
clicking Test, I hear the beep.

Currently keeping fingers crossed. :)

[Bug 159266] Re: Cannot play a radio stream from Rhythmbox

2007-11-01 Thread dierre
I followed your test case step by step, it still does not work here.
Besides, the completion bar when buffering advances rather slowly when
compared to the default radios.

Just wondering... could it be that I don't have some codec required by
rhythmbox to play that stream? How would I check that?

Attached to this comment is the debug output.

Thank you for your help.

[Bug 153152] Re: Fax utility not adding files to job.

2007-11-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
pitti, the problem is that the seeds only recommend hplip but do not
require it. So hplip gets pulled in on live CD build or on Ubiquity or
alternate installation. However, the user can uninstall hplip without
breaking the dependencies of the installed *-desktop mea package. As
hpijs really REQUIRES the libs which come with the hplip package hpijs
MUST require hplip to be consistent. So please sneak into the SRU that
hpijs requires hplip, as I have implemented in the Hardy package. This
makes the next auto update of Gutsy installing hplip in the case where
the user has manually uninstalled it earlier. No need to change the
*-desktop package. Fix has to be done in Gutsy's hplip package.

This is not what is causing #59695 (recently duped to #17216) for me. I

be some other log that is causing the problem. I verified this tailing
acpid while running lm-profiler.

[Bug 31512] Re: Log output far too verbose

2007-11-01 Thread Brian Visel
Partial correction -- It has started logging more often, after
unplugging and plugging in the battery, but seems to log mostly around
once every 1-2 minutes. However, that doesn't fully account for the
writes I get from reiserfs/0 (or 1) every 30 seconds (I.e., I'm still
saying that acpid is not the definitive culprit of the above bugs,
although it may be a contributor).

[Bug 159307] undefined reference to `PSafeObject::PSafeObject()'

2007-11-01 Thread Uplink
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libopenh323-dev

Here's a piece of code:

test.cpp:
-- CUT --
#include "ptlib.h"
#include "h323.h"
#include "h323ep.h"
int
main ()
{
H323EndPoint ep = H323EndPoint();
  ;
  return 0;
}
-- CUT --

and the command line to compile it:

g++ -o test -I /usr/share/openh323/include/ test.cpp -lopenh323

The test code is taken from Asterisk's configure script and the command line is
something I figured out (so it may not be exactly correct). Using that command
line under Ubuntu 7.04, I get a binary output. Under Ubuntu 7.10 it says this:

/usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux-gnu/4.1.3/../../../../lib/libopenh323.so: undefined
reference to `PSafeObject::PSafeObject()'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

This seems to be the reason why Asterisk won't pass configure (with
H323) in Ubuntu 7.10, which in part led me to file bug 159102.

In Gutsy, the splash screen does not show at all -- there is just a blank
screen -- and the computer takes an unusually long time to boot.
Removing the "splash" command from the kernel boot line reduces the boot time
from 3 minutes to 50 seconds.

[Bug 97720] Re: Internet Radio Audio Freezes in Rythmbox Music Player

2007-11-01 Thread era
No clear way to trigger?

To repro:

 1. Run the Ubuntu 7.10 Live CD, or install Ubuntu from scratch.
 2. Look in the Applications -> Sound & Video menu for something to play music
with.
(That "Totem Movie Player" is apparently also capable of playing audio is
hardly obvious.)
Select "Rhythmbox Music Player".
 3. In the absence of anything else to test it with, select one of the four
pre-configured radio stations.

(Not many people who want to try out Ubuntu from a Live CD bring along
Ogg files on removable media, even if they would happen to carry their
favorite music with them. In other words, if they have music, it's
probably AAC or MP3 format.)

What happens:

It stops playing after the first song.

Expected:

It should continue to play the selected station until you ask it to
stop.

Reproducible:

As near as I can tell, always.

If you're testing, "Ambient" is not a good choice, because the songs
tend to be insanely long. I have in fact tried that, and it reproed for
me, as well as on the Virgin station where I first encountered this.
Dunno about "House" or "Techno"; I could not bring myself to try them.

[Bug 31512] Re: Log output far too verbose

2007-11-01 Thread Mark Thomas
What did lm-profiler claim was touching the hard disk? That's probably
the easiest way to work out what's causing the disk to unpark in each
case, as it seems that various programs can cause the effect of bug
59695. There should probably be some kind of review of installed
services to see what does this sort of thing. Ideally when my laptop is
idle, nothing should touch the disk.

Interestingly it's not just Linux. There is a program on my Windows
laptop that does the same thing (logs some security rubbish every 20-30
seconds or so), and according to smartmontools its Load_Unload_Cycle is
683863, so there go the theories about Windows having some kind of
workaround built in. My employer requires the app to be installed, but
then they will pay for the new HD when it fails.

[Bug 149511] Re: [Gutsy] hplip is not installed by default

2007-11-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
pitti, foomatic-db-hpijs has nothing to do with this bug. It should be
recommended by hpijs, as it is very difficult to use hpijs on a system
which neither provides nor generates the appropriate PPDs. But foomatic-
db-hpijs should require hpijs, as being able to generate the HPIJS PPDs
is useless if HPIJS itself is not installed.

[Bug 159305] Evolution and gnome calendar applet display duplicate/incorrect events

2007-11-01 Thread Ryan Lothian
Public bug reported:

I've been using Google Calendar with Evolution for some time.

The address entered into Evolution is of the form:
webcal://www.google.com/calendar/ical/...

Events on my google calendar appear when you click the date/time/calendar gnome
applet or use the Evolution calendar tab.
However, whenever you change or delete events in Google calendar, both
evolution and the applet behaviour incorrectly - changing an event results in
the event being duplicated, while deleting the event in Google calendar has no
effect.

I find this bug very annoying as it results in a completely untrustable
calendar.
