[Bug 53387] Re: Manual WPA networks doesn't connect at boot

2007-11-02 Thread Saïvann Carignan
** Summary changed:

- Boot order problem
+ Manual WPA networks doesn't connect at boot

** Description changed:

- Everything seems to work correctly when I set up the network but when I
- reboot and log into gdm, my networking will not work until I run
- '/etc/init.d/networking restart'.
+ When configuring a wireless network to use WPA outside Gnome Network-
+ manager applet, the network will not reconnect after a reboot without a
+ "/etc/init.d/networking restart"

I moved over to nw-manager for the time being. I set up
/etc/network/interfaces with this type of configuration for ath0

  iface ath0 auto
  iface ath0 inet dhcp
  wpa-driver madwifi
  wpa-ssid homezone
  wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
  wpa-psk "quoted passphrase"
  # wpa-psk 0001231203

I didn't have time to try out the wpa-conf method but I did try wpa-psk
in passphrase and hexidecimal mode with identical results.

The only thing I can think of is trying to use pre-up commands to start
  wpasupplicant before it does dhcp.
+
+ **Workaround : It has been found that renaming the file
+ /etc/udev/rules.d/85-ifupdown.rules so that udev won't read the rules
+ from that file actually solves the problem.

[Bug 132349] Re: external usb disks no longer mount in gutsy

2007-11-02 Thread Suchawato
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 134712 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134712

Hi.
I'm having similar problems.
After installing Gutsy,
My 5'th Gen iPod video will not mount at all.
And, I am having a problem with my LaCie external Hard Drive.
At first, I could not read or write to it as Gutsy annoyingly made it a Root
only permission by default. This was really irritating, but not unfixable.
Then, after I changed the permissions so that all users could
read/write/delete/change files, it seemed to work fine.
Then, the other day when I tried to copy my school assignment to the school
folder on my LaCie, it (Gutsy) would not let me. "Access Denied; you don't have
permissions to write to this folder". When I used
Code:

gksudo nautilus

to try to re-change the permissions as Root, I got; "The Owner Could Not Be
Changed; Couldn't change the owner of "LaCie" because it is on a read-only
disk".
There is no switch or button on the LaCie, that makes it "read only".
It's a USB external drive. There would be no point in making it "read only"
It Isn't read only.
I don't care what Gutsy thinks.
I can access it fine on the Macs at school.
So at the moment, I am unable to use it on this computer.

Re: [Bug 150989] Re: Wrong resolution for HD widescreen in Gutsy withnvidia

2007-11-02 Thread Paul Cheney
I have both outputs. I can get correct screen resolution if I connect
my monitor to VGA, but only 640x480 when connected to DVI.
This happens on both a Dell and Gateway. Gutsy or nvidia plugin thinks
that VGA is screen one output, and DVI is for screen two.
I need to do research how Gutsy handles due screens.

[Bug 159682] Open solaris iscsi target causes panic in open-iscsi

2007-11-02 Thread Fuzzy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: open-iscsi

Hi,

There is a bug with open-iscsi prior to open-iscsi-2.0-865.15 where too
much data is being read by TCP socket. The bug has been fixed in the
latest version of open-iscsi and every attempt I have made to build my
own custom package has failed. The bug is documented here:
http://groups.google.com/group/open-
iscsi/browse_thread/thread/0c0ff41096d5afc9/50b7d839c25d0ce8#50b7d839c25d0ce8
on the open-iscsi mailing list. I will continue to try and build a
package to submit, but I am having loads of trouble trying to re-create
the kernel source tree for 2.6.22-14-xen in a manner that open-iscsi can
compile against.

[Bug 158176] Re: [GUTSY]Computer freeze when machine boot up with 8180L wireless plugged in

2007-11-02 Thread Eddy
Attached is the output log for the command you suggested. It also
contains my current modprobe's blacklist.

This RTL8180 has never worked out of the box with Ubuntu (Feisty). I
always had to use ndiswrapper. It appears that the native module that
comes with it doesn't like it or something. In fact I had to blacklist
it in order to get the ndiswrapper thing to work. Note that the card I
have is the ver 4.0 which is one of those problematic one.

I think the funny thing about this is that the problem happens only when
I leave the card plugged and boot up the machine. If I don't have the
card plugged, the machine boots just fine. And when the boot is complete
and I plugged in the card, everything works just fine as before.
Something seems to be going on during the machine boot up. Also note
that it happens only happen when all the X graphic things are already up
and running. It's right after I supply the password to the key ring
thing so the driver can get the passcode to connect to the network.

I don't think the bug 132657 is a duplicate of this. In that one the
card doesn't work at all. For this one, it works fine but only that boot
time that has problem.

[Bug 159679] Kubuntu Live CD fails to automount hard disk partitions - NOT DOLPHIN

2007-11-02 Thread Tom.S
Public bug reported:

THIS HAPPENS IN KONQUEROR AS WELL

When I boot the Kubuntu Gutsy release live CD, I cannot access my hard disk
partitions.
My partitions are in /media/. But if I click one, no content appears, and I get
the following error:

I posted this because I believe a similar bug was erroneously transferred to
the dolphin area.

[Bug 159677] Multiple bugs and wishlists

2007-11-02 Thread Trevor Schauls
Public bug reported:

This is a list I made from 2 years of Ubuntu and selling computers with
it. This is current with Gutsy.

Packages needed by default in Ubuntu:
gocr spamassassin firestarter

Thing to make Ubuntu better:
1. The ability to just click on the balloon to update
2. totem-gstreamer support for DVDs and VCDs with menus
3. Mouse extra button detection
4. FreeDOS boot disk creator ( for BIOS flashing and such )
5. Reminders to open up ports with firestarter
6. Automatic virus detector ( for windows-linux-windows file sharing)
7. Total ipod and support for Rhythmbox
8. Auto dpkg repair when it is interupted (auto-run gksudo "dpkg --configure
-A")
9. Free version of flash and java and firefox pluguns installed by default (for
64-bit support).
10. Open-Source NVIDIA and ATI graphics drivers with 3D acceleration enabled by
default.
11. NTP clock time by default
12. Rhythmbox conversion support.
13. Auto encrypted DVD installer
14. Encrypted HD-DVD and Blu-ray support
15. WINE integration (to install Windows programs)
16. Python 3D support by default.
17. A Ogg Music Store in Rhythmbox
18. A sync feature to portable players in Rhythmbox
19. Video and video pod-cast support in Rhythmbox
20. Auto Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, MSN setup in Evolution Mail
21. Total 64-bit support
22. A low end option requiring a 512MHz processor, no graphics acceleration,
and 64MB of RAM should be available on a separate CD.
23. Use OpenDNS servers as the default DNS servers.
24. Add preview function in java and HTML upload (for emailing photos).

Bugs:
1. Sound Recorder "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please correct them
in the Multimedia settings." This message should be more specific.

2. A warning should appear if my graphics card doesn't support 3D
acceleration in a certain resolution.

3. Some Actiontec routers from Quest require IPV6 to be disabled in
order to function. Adding #23 would also solve the problem. (tested)

4. Burnable CDs are detected as "CD-ROM disks" in 64-bit version of
Ubuntu

5. Live cd should use 1024 x 768 if autodetection fails.

6. When I change my resolution, it should change all my resolutions.
(bootscreen, login window. grub, etc.)

[Bug 159676] install/desktop crashes with graphical problem

2007-11-02 Thread BrandoonWa
Public bug reported:

I can only install ubuntu 7.04 or 7.1 with the alternate CD. The
standard disk just gives me a screen that has all of the pixels shifted
randomly and freezes. This happens with both the 32 and 64 bit versions
of both releases. If I install with the text based CD I get it installed
and it boots to the login screen perfectly fine but does the same
graphical glitch when it tries to load the desktop. It will load in safe
graphics mode and I can do things from the command line. For pictures:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=595408 I also haven't had any
luck installing Nvidia drivers from the command line.

[Bug 159673] gnome-app-install gstreamer plugin integration does not work for flv

2007-11-02 Thread Evan Dandrea
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-app-install

On a fresh install, I tried to play a .flv file with totem. It asked me
to download ffmpeg, downloaded it, asked me to download gstreamer-
plugins-ugly (I think), and then failed, saying that it could not get
all the necessary codecs. I installed ubuntu-restricted-extras and
tried loading the flv again and it worked file.

It's only a problem for users new to Linux and ubuntu--but that is a big

[Bug 153452] Re: package python-tz 2007d-1 failed to install/upgrade:

2007-11-02 Thread Caroline Ford
Supporting is one thing, *requiring* both versions to be installed at
the same time seems overkill.

My gutsy doesn't yet have it's 3G internet driver installed. This
depends on python-tz, which is telling me I need to install python2.4,
it already has python2.5 installed. This seems really broken, as well as
annoying as I'll have to download each dependency separately using a
different machine.

[Bug 154781] Re: Out of Range message and usplash not displayed in Gutsy

2007-11-02 Thread BigBoy_PDB
Sorry, what I meant to say in the above post is that I posted this bug
awhile ago and that I thought that I had run 'sudo update-initramfs -u',
but I forgot to post it as part of how I got the shutdown usplash screen
to appear. If that was the case then adding the "-k" option with the
kernel version fixed it (but either way the suggested solution fixed the
whole problem).

[Bug 154781] Re: Out of Range message and usplash not displayed in Gutsy

2007-11-02 Thread BigBoy_PDB
Thank you for the solution Stanley. It worked for me.

I posted this a while ago and I think that I had run 'sudo update-
initramfs -u' (or perhaps I thought that I should run it and I forgot to
do so) and there hadn't been a change, but adding the "-k" option
followed by the kernel version worked.

Thanks again,
Dave

It seems to depend on python2.4 *and* python2.5 which I suspect is the
problem. http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/python/python-tz

I can't get it to install on my gutsy system as it wants me to install
python 2.4,

[Bug 159670] [Gutsy] Screensaver preview remains in one position and on top of all windows

2007-11-02 Thread BigBoy_PDB
Public bug reported:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Graphic card: RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
Motherboard: ASUS P4P800SE

When gnome-screensaver-preferences is opened, a frozen version of the
screensaver preview appears in the new position, but the animated
preview remains in the previous position (and cannot be moved
elsewhere). Also, the preview remains on top of all of the windows. In
other words, if another window is selected, the screensaver preview
window will be below it, but the screensaver preview will appear on top
of the window.

[Bug 159669] [Gutsy] Crash clicking on Gmail IMAP sent item with attachment

2007-11-02 Thread Arthur Penn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I connected Evolution to Gmail via IMAP, and the folders are
synchronizing properly. If I have an email with an attachment in the
[Gmail]/All Mail folder, I can click on it without issue and view the
mail and attachment. However, if I click on the _same_ email with an
attachment in the Gmail/Sent Mail folder, Evolution crashes. Command

[Bug 132279] Re: Usability: 'Cannot mount volume' details are not selectable

2007-11-02 Thread OnmykneesforJesus
Hmmm this particular issue really shits me

I like the dumb arse "Homer Simpson" approach

"Light Bulb ON - Light Bulb OFF"

"Light Bulb ON - Light Bulb OFF"

"Light Bulb ON - Light Bulb OFF"

"Light Bulb ON - Light Bulb OFF"

And while I WISH and DESIRE to be able to program all this neato stuff into
code so that every one can use it, for the time being I am only able to whine
about this issue.

It shits me how sometimes the drive or USB card readers DO just work and
other times they refuse to mount... or work when mounted etc...

So about the only thing I can do for now is winge at other people -
O boo hoo hoo it's fucked... it doesn't work... YOU fix it and make
it work for me... I can't cope, it's all too hard... Oh woe is me"

If I could and knew how, I'd love to write up the coding to so that ALL
USB drives - be they cards from my camera or my Winslows USB backup
drive, would just "plug and work"

So rather than just whine and expect everyone else to do it for me...
I'd like to be a contributor too..

If some one would like to teach me how to program for Ubuntu Linux, I'd
be happy to start working on it...

Re: [Bug 53923] Re: tifm: Texas Instruments Card reader not working

2007-11-02 Thread TG Browning
Andrew,

Sorry if I wasn't clear -- this was NOT a memory stick issue. in point
of fact, it was a SanDisk issue that I was referring to and it's flaky
as hell, to be honest.

Don't get me wrong -- the people working on it are doing a heck of a
good job. The problem (as I see it) is that there are different chip
sets out there with odd firmware that doesn't ID itself very well. My
experience was with a Secure Digital & Mutlimedia (GE supposedly) USB
SanDisk reader. It works. Not great, but it does work if you have it
in when the system boots. It occasionally works if you plug it in later,
but not always.

Yes, the lspci and other scanning compenents under Ubuntu do see the current
diskreader but get messed up, sometimes allowing them to be mounted, sometimes
not, and always being a pain in the pratt if you pull the SanDisk. There
doesn't seem to be any way to unmount them once they're there.

Please, Andrew, this was NOT a crit of you or the bug reporting and bug
killing efforts of the Ubuntu community. Cripes, you guys do a heck of a
job considering the complete and total lack of support that most vendors
(influenced by Microsoft).

Andrew Waldram <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Konstaninos and TG Browning

I'm guessing by MMS you mean Memmory Stick as there is no such card as
MMS.

This is not the same bug, Memory sticks are not yet supported by this
driver

A quick search on the tifm home page shows
Currently in development:

tifm_ms - driver for MemoryStick cards (beta). This driver is not very useful
without higher level MemoryStick protocol drivers. These are found in the same
svn repository. Their current status:
memstick - card identification driver (beta)
ms_block - legacy MemoryStick storage support (alpha)
mspro_block - MemoryStick Pro storage support (beta, has some problems)
Early stages of development:

So the fact that the memmory stick is detected shows the driver is working to
its present limit.

If you had read through this bug report you would also have found that I
have mentioned REPEATEDLY that this drive only supports SD cards at
present.

If you want Memmory Stick support I'd sugest you pop across to Belios's
(the developer) homepage and cross his palm with silver or donate a MS
card for testing.

[Bug 153742] Re: No sound in Flash movies

2007-11-02 Thread Sabaki
I'm having the same problem. No sound with Firefox 2.0.0.8 and
flashplugin-nonfree v9 on 64-bit Ubuntu v.7.10 'Gutsy'. nspluginwrapper
and alsa-oss are installed. Most other apps play sound fine. I've
reinstalled, tried launching firefox with aoss, edited
/etc/firefox/firefoxrc and put FIREFOX_DSP="aoss", installed pulseaudio,
etc., etc. Nothing I've tried so far works.

I have an AMD 64 Athlon 64 3500+ processor and the motherboard is a ECS
RS-482_M.
The on-board AC '97 sound just wouldn't work with Ubuntu at all, so I installed
a Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI] and disabled the on-board sound support in the bios
and all my other apps work fine with it.

[Bug 102097] Re: Auto mount does not work for USB drive

2007-11-02 Thread Tanker Bob
I also have this problem on Kubuntu Gutsy installed clean. I posted
details at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=594421. I'll repeat
some of that here for convenience and add a few things.

Short description is that no USB removable FAT file system will
automount in my Kubuntu Gutsy. I have a USB external FAT hard drive,
several flash sticks, and a USB card reader. The USB external hard drive
connects directly to the motherboard port, the sticks and card reader
through a hub. My USB printer, Bluetooth stick, and camera have no
problems with auto mounting, and the Bluetooth connects through the USB
hub. It is only USB removable storage devices with FAT file systems that
don't auto mount.

I have tried adding the USB HD to /etc/fstab at its usually assigned
address, but Kubuntu also tries to create a drive out of the 1K marker
for the extended partition on another ext3 internal hard drive. It seems
that whatever is next in line, be it the USB HD's entry (usually sdd or
sdi) or the floppy drive (fd0), that bogus partition captures other
devices' entries. The other mounts on that other disk are hda1, hda5
(only entry in the extended partition), and hda3 (linux swap partition).
I can manually create the mounting for the USB drive only if the 1K
extended partition marker doesn't steal the mounting point. At the
moment it is squatting on the floppy's mounting point, but the floppy
works fine. I finally solved this by putting the USB HD in fstab by name
rather than address. No problems with the internal NTFS volume loading.

My initial workaround for the flash sticks and cards uses Dolphin''s
Storage Media, which notes the insertion of the sticks/cards/USB HD even
though they are not mounted. Opening the stick/card/HD in Dolphin
correctly automatically mounts the devices. This gets pretty annoying of
one is swapping sticks or cards a lot. I can also see all the inserted
devices using "lsusb" when they are not auto mounted. The problem is not
one of detecting the devices--all are detected immediately upon
insertion, just not auto mounted.

Then I discovered that if I used Dolphin to mount the sticks and cards
that I commonly use, but giving them custom mounting point names and
checking the auto mount box in the mounting dialog allows the devices to
be automounted after that, even after restarts. The mounting points in
/media are recreated upon insertion. Devices that didn't go through this
process still do not automount, though.

Running 'dmesg | grep usb' produces the following new lines after
plugging in a USB stick:

[117008.216420] usb-storage: device found at 14
[117008.216422] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
[117013.205095] usb-storage: device scan complete

Running 'udevmonitor --udev' while plugging in a USB flash stick gives:

UDEV [1194051585.706824] add /block/sdj/sdj1 (block)

I understand that the USB portion of the Gutsy kernel was extensively
rewritten for laptop autosuspend functionality. I wonder if this isn't
fallout from that rewrite. Reinstalling mount, pmount, and hal did not
help, and neither did loading Feisty's hal. Judging from posts on the
boards, this problem is pretty wide-spread.

[Bug 34947] Re: Volume Control slider doesn't update

2007-11-02 Thread dailyglen
I have a similar problem in Gutsy (not in Feisty) to Kevin. When I
adjust the volume with the keyboard the volume adjustment is erratic (it
might go up or down, turn off the left channel, etc). Sometime
adjusting the volume with the applet is better but if I'm using Totem
while adjusting it does weird things. I have an external usb sound card
(Trends Audio UD-10) and I did some changes to get it to be recognized
(I disabled my onboard sound card in the BIOS so the usb card is the
first one).:

[Bug 107188] Re: [MASTER] [kde] Upgrade tool crashed with " Cannot allocate memory"

2007-11-02 Thread Tzvetan Mikov
Here is the workaround which worked for me:

* Download the Kubuntu "Alternate Install CD", burn it and mount it in /cdrom
* From a shell execute:
cd $(mktemp -d)
tar xzf /cdrom/dists/gutsy/main/dist-upgrader/binary-all/gutsy.tar.gz
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10255100/DistUpgradeViewText.patch
patch < DistUpgradeViewText.patch
sed -ie "s/View=.*/View=DistUpgradeViewText/" DistUpgrade.cfg
sudo ./gutsy --cdrom /cdrom

The upgrade proceeds in text mode and completes successfully. Ironically
there is also a minor bug in the text mode upgrade process (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/154195) - that is why the patch
is necessary.

This is the same workaround as described by cimmo, but hopefully a bit
more detailed so a novice could apply it (yeah, right :-).

[Bug 108558] Re: wpa not working, network manager locks computer

2007-11-02 Thread alexrudd
As outlined in the second half of
[url=http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=369713]this thread[/url], I am
experiencing what I believe to be the same problem. My university network uses
WPA with LDAP user authentication, so it took quite some configuring of
/etc/network/interfaces in Gutsy to get my Realtek 8185 (ndiswrapper) to work.
Upon upgrading to Feisty, it broke completely. Issuing "sudo
/etc/init.d/networking restart" (or probably "ifup wlan0") completely freezes
the system. Nothing changes except for the CAPS and SCROLL keys blinking.
[quote]ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported

WEXT auth param 5 value 0x1 - There is already a pid file
/var/run/dhclient.wlan0.pid with pid 134993416[/quote]
This error isn't actually on my machine, but it's almost exactly the same.

Two things can fix the freeze-up, but the computer still won't connect.
(1)Using 2.6.20 instead of 2.6.20 - I have nvidia problems, but it doesn't
freeze.
(2)Changing "wpa-driver wext" to "wpa-driver wpa-supplicant."
These remove the "WEXT auth [...]: Operation not supported" errors, but the
"ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Operation not supported" ones remain. The system
still does not connect.

I can't find a project for "ioctl" or "wext", so I'm reassigning this to
wpa-supplicant.

[Bug 157790] Re: Seg fault on enabling desktop effects

2007-11-02 Thread Ricardo Pontes
Pedro, I'm having difficulty getting a backtrace beacuse I cannot
install the required package. I followed your link and added the repos
to the sources.list. I couldn't find a compiz-dbgsym for compiz but I
did find compiz-core-dbgsym (not sure what other packages I should
install). When I try to install compiz-core-dbgsym I get the following:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

The "Function Wizard" is not resizable for me with Kubuntu (with compiz
enabled the cursor changes, but I cannot drag the window borders and
with kwin the cursor does not change at the window borders).

What Gnome theme are you using?
There is bug 131526, which causes crashes because of some themes. You can see
what theme you are using in "System / Preferences / Appearance" from the Gnome
toolbar. Please try, if using "Human" (the default theme) fixes this.
Please report back, if this is the cause of your problem(s).

[Bug 159664] "Legacy Fullscreen Support" compiz workaround causes missing window decorations for oocalc

2007-11-02 Thread dAniel hAhler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

With "Legacy Fullscreen Support" enabled for the compiz workaround plugin,
starting "oocalc" makes it fullscreen (above the taskbar even), without any
window decorations.
Turning off this particular workaround fixes it.

I'm using Kubuntu Gutsy.

** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 12154] Re: Nautilus should have a superuser mode

2007-11-02 Thread Dirk Palowitch
Agreed.

Nautilus should have a supermode that doesn't require you to go to
terminal and type in gksudo nautilus. When doing something that requires
permission, it should just ask you for password and allow you to
continue.

Using Nautilus in superuser mode is used too often - even by newbies -
to not do this. How many postings have you seen in the forum where
someone doesn't know how to use Nautilus in superuser mode? Too many...

This is a simple change/fix/upgrade and no-brainer...

Not crazy about 'Wladston's' text for the box...

Should be more like:

"Enter Your Password to Perform Administrative Task(s)"

Copied straight from another program that requires password.

[Bug 153458] Re: Compiz - Main window in evolution missing window decorations

2007-11-02 Thread dAniel hAhler
Please try if disabling the "Legacy Fullscreen Support" option in the
compiz workaround plugin fixes this. You may have to install the
compizconfig-settings-manager and start the settings-manager with
"ccsm".
