[Bug 148247] Re: Compiz not supported for G965

2008-01-09 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Reopening, lowering priority.

It was confirmed that to make EXA performance similar to XAA it'll need
the new memory-manager (TTM), and that's not ready for Hardy. So we
might need to force the driver to use XAA again.

[Bug 173949] Re: Printing on my HP4650 always chooses wrong format and tray

2008-01-09 Thread ThomasNovin
I changed in /etc/default/locale and /etc/environment according to the
following:

$ cat /etc/default/locale
LANG="en_DK.UTF-8"

$ cat /etc/environment | grep LANG
LANG="en_DK.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_DK.UTF-8"

This seems to have solved all my problems. My previous locale was
'en_US.UTF-8' before I changed anything in .gnomerc.

So what this boils down to is that just because I want to have
everything in English I got the wrong locale on my initial install and
that caused my printing problems.

Where did you get these patches from? Are they from upstream? As they are quite

[Bug 104630] Re: mplayer ppc crash due to incorrect use of fsqrt

2008-01-09 Thread ski
I too was having this problem.

I downloaded the source with apt-get source and twiddled with various
CFLAGS and configure knobs, but really that was a waste of time, because
i get a working mplayer binary with CFLAGS empty and no defaults on a
G3. My guess is that this is a bug in the mplayer configuration system -
they sternly warn you not to override CFLAGS (even if it's to provide a
more compatible -mcpu= option!) If I add -mpowerpc-gpopt to CFLAGS,
boom, the SIGILL's come back. Remove them again, and it builds fine.
These CFLAGS, for example, work fine: "-mcpu=750 -Os -pipe -fno-strict-
aliasing -mpowerpc-gfxopt"

I was very surprised to find that this resulted in a usable build of
mplayer on this ol' G3 @ 400MHz. I can watch a 624x352 XviD without
altivec. Only catches are that cpu usage is at 100% and there is the
occasional dropped frame, and that the default audio out (oss) makes
human voices scratchy and unlistenable. -ao alsa fixes that right up
though.

In any event, here's how I did it for those of you playing along at
home:

#NOTE: apt will pull in some prerequisites - keep track of these if you want to
delete them later
sudo apt-get install libx264-dev libxvidcore4-dev libfaac-dev libasound2-dev
libxv-dev libfontconfig1-dev
cd /tmp
sudo apt-get source mplayer
export CXXFLAGS="" ; export CFLAGS=""
./configure --enable-largefiles --disable-tv --disable-pvr --disable-tv-v4l1
--disable-tv-v4l2 \
--disable-tv-bsdbt848 --disable-unrarlib --disable-inet6 --disable-ftp
make && sudo make install

I also had a successful build with these CFLAGS, but haven't compared the two
for performance or anything like that:
export CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=740 -Os -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -mpowerpc-gfxopt" ;
export CFLAGS="-mcpu=740 -Os -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -mpowerpc-gfxopt" ;

It takes between 20 minutes (with -Os) and 30 (with -O4 as mplayer's
config script defaults to) to build the binary. You'll almost certainly
want to add -maltivec if you are compiling on a G4.

I'm sure that even on my system there is more to tune, but I'm not
running gentoo here, so I'm happy for the moment ;-)

Good luck!

[Bug 163151] Re: Toshiba Satellite R20 Fails to Hibernate / Suspend

2008-01-09 Thread Michael Stahlman
I too have a Toshiba Satellite R20 and have difficulties with suspend. It
originally was turning everything off except the CPU fan and the power lights.
I was able to get that fixed with the help of Peter from this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/139045.

I have not suffered from applications freezing, but I do get a message:
"Sleep Problem: Your computer failed to suspend. Check the help file for common
problems."

In dmesg, I have seen a recurring set of messages (which I am unsure if it is
related):
APIC error on CPU0: 40(40)
APIC error on CPU1: 40(40)

I am going to continue trying some of the items listed in Debugging ACPI
and disabling some hardware drivers to see if that changes things.

[Bug 181702] ATI restricted drivers + XGL + Gutsy = xscreensaver not working

I have tried every combinations but basically when I disable screensaver

10 minutes my screen goes black, I have seen a solution in ubuntu forums
that works for me and is to add this lines to my xorg.conf :

Section "ServerFlags"

Option "BlankTime" "0"

Option "StandbyTime" "0"

Option "SuspendTime" "0"

Option "OffTime" "0"

EndSection

With this bug you can't see a movie every ten minutes going the screen
black wathever you put in your preferences in the media player (disable
screensaver not working) or in Ubuntu power manager configuration.

[Bug 181698] Please upgrade to upstream 2.20.3 version

2008-01-09 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Please upgrade the Gutsy version of Gnome Games. There have been a
number of severe bugs that were fixed in 2.20.2 and 2.20.3 which are
causing a flood of bug duplicates in the Gnome Bugzilla (there are a
_lot_ of Ubuntu users out there...). Two bugs are particularly frequent
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=412690 and
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=418427) as they occur when
Ubuntu systems are being upgraded (when people often probably play

Hi Sam,

I set up the upstream kernel bugzilla bug watch for #7598. You should
now get updates regarding the upstream bugzilla bug report as well.
However, you made a comment that you were able to successfully boot from
the Hardy LiveCD? So it would seem that this issue is resolved for the
newer kernel. Did you get around to test from an actual install?

Re: [Bug 162292] Re: upgrading feisty to gutsy with software raid

2008-01-09 Thread Iwan
Hi
I don't have that broken list anymore, as I reinstalled a clean
system. What I remember from the menu.lst is that pointing it to the
correct drive root=whatever did not solve the problem. I think the
problem may be grub's menu.lst but it may also be related to initrd
not loading the raid module drivers. Am working in a new job now and I
haven't really tinkered with Linux since Slackware days, but at that
time it looked like a grub error. I think the best way to test it is
to setup a raid with the older Ubuntu and then to cdromupgrade it.

Simple. Is it the best solution? or a fix? not really. Java should be

[Bug 181697] Local Evolution users should be able to share data

2008-01-09 Thread Jo-Erlend Schinstad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

In Evolution, there is an "On this computer" type for all types of data;
calendars, mail folders, tasks, notes and contacts. It's quite common
for people to share the same computer, either physically, or using a
terminal server such as LTSP or NX. It should be easy to enable users to
share their data with other users via the filesystem. At least in read-
only mode. I'm not sure it would be a good idea to let several users
have write access at the same time, but even being able to just view
another users data would be of great value to lots of users. If Mother
just wants to see if Father has time to pickup Child, it'd be overkill
to invest in a MS Exchange server or something like that.

Solution, add a "Select calendar" button to the dialog that appears when
you create a new calendar "On this computer". The filesystem permissions
will decide if one can write to it or not. Shared data is located in
/home/evolution-share, for instance. It shouldn't be more complicated
than that?

Re: [Bug 114363] Re: flashplugin-nonfree causes browser crash on close

2008-01-09 Thread derp
This, at least for me, is a sound issue; more specifically an alsa vs
oss issue.

I can replicate the crash with the following steps:

1) open xmms
2) play arbitrary mp3 (using the OSS output driver "libOSS")
3) open new instance of firefox
4) go to youtube.com and play random video (you should not hear any
sound from the video as OSS has taken over /dev/dsp)
5) while the video is playing, stop xmms (not pause)
6) press back on browser
7) crash!

I solved this problem by setting *everything* to use alsa. It seems as
though flash (which, for me, uses alsa) does not play nice with OSS.

produces an error albeit a different one.

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x in 32-bit code

what ever I slid the volume to didnt make a difference on the gnome

clicking on the icon, selecting preferences and under the ca0106 alsa

[Bug 180907] Re: unable to resume from hibernate

2008-01-09 Thread JoshuaKersey
OK, here's the more details I got.

The last thing I see before an entirely black screen says bluetooth...
that's all i was able to see. I'll try more later. After the entirely
black screen I see an full screen of random text characters and colors,
followed by another black screen... at which point I'm unable to proceed
without holding down the power button, losing my entire hibernated
session.

This is probably the biggest nuisance to me of the entire operating
system and dealing with Ubuntu on a laptop. My asus worked fine on
Feisty, and I loved it. This is one of Dell's newest big most popular
laptops, and it's the same architecture as the Vostro 1500, which is by
far the most popular notebook on the big name note book review site.

Yeah, I know... I'm whining, but I'm very willing to be as helpful as I
can in resolving this.

When I disable them and now remove the "quiet splash" it completes loading
the resume data file 100%.

This is probably a different problem, but it won't suspend to disk when I'm
using the nvidia restricted drivers. That's made it not fun trying to
troubleshoot it. I'm going to try again and see what else I get after the
loading of the data file. Is there any easy way of logging/pausing/slowing

kernel past 2.6.22 displays it.

Now here is the kicker. The mute button actually mutes the. But the software
(Gnome or KDE) does not pick it up when running on a kernel past 2.6.22. So the
mixers are not aware that things have been muted. So you have no visual that
things are muted.

Had a discussion on ibm-acpi-devel but it's not archived SO I'll past my
results here:

System:
   Thinkpad T61
   Vendor: LENOVO
   Firmware Version: 7LETA7WW (2.07)
   EC Version: 1.08

Here are my test results (These are kernel.org kernels):

kernel 2.6.22.15 (w/ thinkpad-acpi v0.14) = Works great Gnome can see
  mute
button pressed

Kernel 2.6.22.15 (with thinkpad-acpi v0.19) = Works great Gnome can see
mute
button pressed

kernel 2.6.23.13 (w/ thinkpad-acpi v0.16) = Gnome does NOT see mute is pressed
  Mute button is
not recogonized when try to
   associate it
with a keyboard action
   using
gnome-keybing-properties

kernel 2.6.24-rc7 (w/ thinkpad-acpi v0.17) = Gnome does NOT see mute is pressed
  Mute button is
not recogonized when try to
  associate it with
a keyboard action using

gnome-keybing-properties

Kernel 2.6.24-rc7 (with thinkpad-acpi v0.19) = Gnome does NOT see mute is
pressed
  Mute button is
not recogonized when try to
  associate it with
a keyboard action using

gnome-keybing-properties

[Bug 181690] Re: pam_unix 'unknown entries' for authlog

2008-01-09 Thread PaulSchulz
Email sent upstream.

Hi Kirk,

Please find attached a patch for Logwatch pam_auth script. This also
fixes a bug with the fc5 regular expression.

I have also reported this to the Ubuntu bugtracker..

[Bug 181690] Re: pam_unix 'unknown entries' for authlog

2008-01-09 Thread PaulSchulz
Reasons:

There is no regular expression that matches the 'pam_auth_(auth|session)' lines
explicitly.
The Fedora (fc5) regular expression swallows the Ubuntu
pam_unix_(auth|session|auth) lines, but then fails to format the strings
correctly.

See attached patch.

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-01-09 Thread Loye Young
I'm not sure what you mean by "fixed . . . with latest updates," because
the console is still broken unless the user has the inclination and
ability to do some hacking.

With latest updates the default installation still doesn't allow better
than 80x25 on the console, because the framebuffer is blacklisted and
nothing takes its place.

It is possible to re-engineer the box to get the console working again,
but that's not a fix, just a workaround for us in the geek-speak-
enlightened club.

The SVGA standard for 1024 × 768 resolution at 256 colors was released in 1990.
Here we are 18 years later running the most advanced, cutting edge kernel on
the planet, but we're back to hacking the kernel to get the humble, text-mode
tty console working properly. WTF?

Bottom line: this bug ain't fixed.

Happy Trails,

[Bug 181678] Problem with Cpmpaq Smart Array 431 Controller and Ubuntu

2008-01-09 Thread tad1073
Public bug reported:

Spec:
Compaq Proliant ML330
Pentium III 733mhz 256k cache
256mb ram
Compaq Smart Array 431 Controller set to RAID0 w/25.9gb=3/9.1gb hd's
System Embedded IDE Controller
SCSI Controller

I have been trying to get Ubuntu 7.10 on that machine for a week now. I
keep getting the same errors and I am not computer savy by no means and
am a noob to Linux.

>From the Ubuntu boot screen I selected "Check CD for Defects" and got
the errors listed below:

[364.283722] ata1.01: Exception Emask 0x0 Sact 0x0 Serr 0x0 action 0x2 Frozen
[364.283771] ata1.01 (BMDMA stat 0x44)

sr0, logical block 329966-329975

The error messege has 10 line to it, I shortened it to one line so I wouldn't
have to type the whole thing out:
305]349]= [374.885305][374.885349] etc. etc.

I select "Star or Install Ubuntu" from the boot screen it runs through
the process of the checks and there are some [FAIL] messeges on some of
the checks, then it tells me to "hit enter for maintnace or ctrl+D to
continue" When I hit enter I am taken to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I don't know
how to fix the errors. If I ctrl+D it puts out a bunch of errors and
won't load the OS. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that the CD was ordered from Ubuntu, I ordered two
more which are the text based installers. I will check it on another
machine. If there are no errors can you help me installing it on the
machine mentioned.

I am not necessarily going to use that machine as a server, for now
anyways.

I checked the CD and there are no defects on it or with it. i kind of figured
it was a compatibility issue, so now what do I do?
