[Bug 211687] [NEW] Remaining brightness issue on Thinkpad T61

2008-04-03 Thread Jonathan
Public bug reported:

First, I'd like to mention that this is not a duplicate of this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198476
That issue was fixed with yesterday's kernel update and my keyboard buttons do
work to adjust my screen brightness. This is a related issue, however.

When on battery power, the screen tends to progressively dim itself. In
Power Management I have checked the boxes for 'Reduce backlight
brightness' and 'Dim display on idle'. When I unplug, the display dims
(good) and when I leave it sit there for a minute or two, the screen
dims a little more (I'm assuming this is 'dim display when idle').
Unfortunately when I move my mouse (where I'd expect the screen to
brighten a little again by coming out of idle), the screen dims even
more. It seems like someone put a call for brightness down where it
should've been brightness up. But then again, I don't really know what
I'm talking about in that area...

I have an Intel X3100 gpu on a Thinkpad T61 running Hardy 8.04 beta with
todays upgrades. Please let me know if you need more information.

patch that is included in gnome-power-manager_2.22.1-0ubuntu3~ppa2 in my

It should make it so that the screen always turns of when the lid is
shut whether or not another app inhibits GPM.

Thanks. Ted.

[Bug 202247] Re: m1330 screen flicker

2008-04-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ah, thanks for checking in console mode; so chances are good it's not X.
To be certain - if you shut down X entirely (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop)
can you recreate the issue? If so, then it definitely rules out an X
driver issue. If you can't reproduce it, then X may still be involved
in some way.

In any case, it's sounding like you're thinking it should be explored
from the ACPI issue, so I'll go ahead and refile it there. As far as
information to collect, the next step for you would be to work through
this page, which explains what files and info is required:

[Bug 202174] Re: Please update to version 2.6

2008-04-03 Thread msevior
A few more points to support the inclusion of abiword-2.6.0 in th
eupcoming Unbuntu release.

This is a major update. Asking for a changelog is insane. It has be in
excess of 100,000 LOC. There is no way anyone is going to be able to
review that.

We have fixed hundreds of bugs since 2.4.6 which have not and will not
be backported to 2.4.x. The 2.4.x series is dead as far as we're
concerned.

Our windows 2.6.0 release is now out in the wild. We have registered
over 300,000 downloads already. AbiWord-2.6.x will be included in
upcoming fedora, Mandriva and SUSE release.

AbiWord 2.6.x includes a brand new real-time collaborative editing
feature which allows Windows, fedora, SUSE and Mandriva users to
simultaneously edit their documents in real time. This feature has
received rave reviews on OLPC machines (where it is included as the
within the Write word processor). If Ubuntu does not include 2.6.x,
Ubuntu users will miss out on this exceptional new feature, while their
Windows friends can happily interoperate.

I've had Compiz disabled as a workaround, so I didn't notice. Now I
tried it with the screensavers Mauro Torrez mentions, a sure enough - it
leads to the same bitter end. I can add 'zoom' to the list, which is of
special interest since it always seems to end up as the screensaver in
the preview window when random mode is selected.

Public bug reported:

[Bug 196730] A Bug not a Feature

2008-04-03 Thread djtm
I think this must not be regarded as a feature but as a bug.

And there really should be no problem with the feature freeze.
UDF 2.5 is now just too widespread to justify waiting with applying it I think.

And imagine all the support problems:
-people think their DVD/Blueray drive's not working with Ubuntu,
-current media not working in Ubuntu
-Vista incompatability (related to bug #01)
-missing HD media support
-people trying to gain that support by themselves and damaging their system in
the process, etc ...

Considering all that it should be a clear choice!

Got lost in that techie stuff, Use an ASUS P4GE- MX motherboard nothing
fancy like graphic cards. The resolution works fine with XP. Installed
the beta version on my secondary hard disk.
Hope that helps. Would love to have an Ubuntu version that does not make
me go back, that's why I keep installing every version.

[Bug 211188] Re: Doesn't work for port 80

2008-04-03 Thread Maheshk
I'm using mediawiki-1.9.3 and running on apache server 2.2. Default port I was
using 80 so my url was http://localhost/mediawiki-1.9.3/index.php
but when I installed mediawiki after giving all inputs and moving
localsetting.php. When I run same URL, it automatically redirects to
http://localhost:8080/mediawiki-1.9.3/index.php, obivously it gives error page
not found. Now I'm using port other than 80, it works fine.

[Bug 211670] [NEW] [Hardy] [ACX100] nm-applet, NetworkManager crash, then system crash when connecting to (WEP) in roaming mode

2008-04-03 Thread Thomas B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hardy 8.04 (updated as of April 4); network-manager 0.6.6-0ubuntu5;
network-manager-gnome 0.6.6-0ubuntu2.

Step 1: sudo killall NetworkManager; sudo killall NetworkManagerDispatcher;
sudo killall nm-applet.
Step 2: sudo NetworkManagerDispatcher; sudo NetworkManager; sudo nm-applet
Step 3: Left click on nm-applet, which shows my wireless network (and 3
neighbors). Select my wireless network.
Step 4: A box opens asking for the WEP key or passphrase. I enter said key,
64-bit Hex. I select either Open or Shared key, and close the box.
(I get the error under "Result" just before Step 5, then again just after.)
Step 5: The same box reopens, asking the same questions. I repeat step 4.

Expected: connection to network.

Result:
The following error:
** Message: Forcing device
'/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/wlan0'

** (nm-applet:5657): CRITICAL **: wso_wep_auth_combo_cleanup: assertion
`combo != NULL' failed

nm-applet disappears from tray. I have about 1.5 seconds to input a
command before the system freezes while the Caps Lock + Scroll Lock keys
begin to blink. My chosen command last round copied /var/log/syslog as
the system was crashing. That syslog is attached. Anything else I should
attach?

[Bug 65230] Re: startup messages continue on screen after first login prompt appears

2008-04-03 Thread Steve Langasek
Scott, do you have any comments on the proposed fix for this bug? It
seems to me like a straightforward solution to defer starting the getty
on tty1 until after the rest of rc2 has finished. Perhaps the proposed
patch isn't future-proof against other services being migrated to use
upstart events instead of sysv init scripts (?), but that doesn't seem
to me like a reason to avoid a partial fix that could get us through
hardy.

This seems like a different issue. The problem I had was with actually
*hibernating* (the computer would not turn off). This has been fixed in
2.6.24-13. (Thanks again for that!)

I'd vote for #201086 to be closed.

[Bug 211668] [NEW] [HARDY][REGRESSION] Write Failure with SD Device

2008-04-03 Thread Noel J. Bergman
Public bug reported:

System: IBM T61p 6457-7WU

I can read and write this successfully with Gutsy (and with MS-Win), but
Hardy almost immediately starts botching the I/O, even on a tiny text
file. I have the latest Hardy updates as of time of posting, including
tonight's kernel update.

[Bug 189611] Re: jockey-gtk crashed with NameError in install_package()

2008-04-03 Thread Playa1313
I think I found a fix!

I took the file /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/jockey/oslib.py from my
other installation (hardy-upgraded Gutsy) and replaced the one on my
64-bit hardy, restarted jockey and installed ok.

Only problem was that when I logged in the taskbar icon reported a
jockey error. Despite this, the driver works just fine.

If anyone wants to try my oslib.py, here it is.

[Bug 211664] [NEW] Windows shared printers not visible in Hardy Beta.

2008-04-03 Thread Turbo
Public bug reported:

Hi again.

I'm very lucky because I can use Ubuntu 8.04 Beta everyday as my working PC.
One of the best parts is that it's connected to several Domains in a Windows
network. Is pleasant to see that browsing the Network now shows the Domains
and PC on it easier than Gutsy (IMO). But just today I note the following:

In my lab there is a Lexmark printer shared by a Windows XP computer.
The printer installing process in Ubuntu gives the option to browse this PC by
navigating the network (this is GREAT!) BUT when you reach that PC
you simply can not see the shared printer(s). The result is that you must
type the SMB route yourself. As you can see and browse the Windows
network it's expected you can also see the printers they contain, right ??

So, after the installation I made click on Places/Network and started browsing
the Windows domain into another PCs and could successfully see their shared
folders but NO the shared printers.

Just my today's two cents. ;-)

Regards.

Turbo.

I'm using 8.04 now.Kubuntu. It hangs upon log out. Black screen.
Have not had a chance to try some of the work arounds suggested above.
Like ctrl-del-backspace --before logout. Or the power manager daemon in

Strangely, I've used Kubuntu 6.10 thru 8.04 and this is the very first
time I've come across this problem. And my box hasn't changed.. well a

[Bug 195296] Re: [gutsy] gdm (including gdmsetup) ignores or cannot access gdm.conf-custom

2008-04-03 Thread vl4dt
It worked again, don't know exactly why but this is what I did:

I removed all the themes that gdmsetup let me remove, i think the only
ones left was Circles and the Happy GNOME themes, then reinstalled the
gdm, gdm-themes, ubuntu-desktop, ubuntu-themes and things like that, at
this point i have not fixed anything, it was worse because the Human
theme never appeared again so I got an error reporting that cannot open
or read /usr/share/gdm/themes/Human/Human.xml file, of course there was
no Human directory in /usr/share/gdm/themes, then I made a copy of a
theme directory, Crystal in this case, and renamed the directory to
Human, and it loads as the default theme, don't know why because I
removed any reference to the Human theme in the .conf files, by the way,
the gdm.conf-custom was empty, 0 bytes and I replaced it with the
gdm.conf file and nothing different happened, but that was before I
replaced the Human theme directory, after that I'd go to the gdm screen
using the Switch-User option, and loaded Crystal, I logged again and
deleted the Human directory, again, somehow when I enter the gdmsetup it
was working again as it should, selecting and saving the theme as usual,
I believe I did extra work because probably all the problem was that the
gdm.conf-custom file was truncated to zero, maybe just replacing that
with the gdm.conf file or factory-gdm.conf would have been enough to
solve the problem.

If anybody can check and see if just replacing the truncated gdm.conf-
custom file fix the problem, I would like to know, now everything works
fine, maybe the error is where the file was truncated to zero.

[Bug 211658] [NEW] Time format not changing in Hardy Beta.

2008-04-03 Thread Turbo
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone.

Still working almost every day with this beauty of Ubuntu 8.04.
Yesterday I found the following:

Before posting this note, I was checking Bug #179400 but still doubt if it
applies or not.
As usual, I keep my Beta Hardy full patched.

In my case, I'm very happy with the new option to change the time format back
and forth
from 24 to 12 (in Gutsy you had to change it manually). OK, there I go, click
in the date,
change to 12 format, click and wow, nothing happens, the format stays in 24
as if it
were ignoring the Apply or Accept buttons. No error messages, no warnings,
nothing.
It just stays as before.

Best Regards.

Turbo.

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get "stuck" down

2008-04-03 Thread Oli
On the crashing note, often when I have things looping, newly launched
apps will crash out. Firefox (latest beta) and Tomboy are two key
examples of this. When I can next safely restart X, I'll force a
modifier key lock-up. I think that's what causes most crashes.

nq: open up a terminal, force the bug and switch back to the terminal.
Are you seeing repeated keystrokes?

And yeah, looks like I'm on the right version:

Sound doesn't work for me either but aplay --list-devices gives me:

$cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat:

So it is seeing my card, but I still don't get sound. When I try to play a wav

Re: [Bug 210079] Re: firefox 3 freezes at start and on menu click or typing

2008-04-03 Thread slashack
I've installed xubuntu 8.04 beta (x86_64). Installed some extra
libraries (GTK developing libraries, ia32) and flashplugin-nonfree.
After doing that, suddenly, when i opened firefox, it took about 2 o 3
minutes between i ran it from the terminal and the browser appeared.
This happened every time I clicked on any firefox menu or typed on any
web or textbox. The only thing i could do whithout having this freezes
was browsing with my mouse.

As i said in my last mail. When i've uninstalled ia32 and flash
plugin, firefox keep doing this. But when i've reinstalled flash
plugin, it magically started working again.

Absolutely. However, nq said:
"When this occurs, I am unable to type
in any new applications that is launched. It automatically
crashes/closes the application regardless of the key I press. Odd thing
for me is any existing application that is already open before this

Which doesn't sound to me like "a key keeps repeating".

Right. Well, the xserver-xorg-core-2:1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu6
upload fixed this problem for me. Can you check that you're actually
using this version of the package - from the Ubuntu repositories?
(apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core should print this info out).

There were a number of updates installed (probably 25 or more) that were
installed. I have been updating 8.04 periodically (sometimes daily,
sometimes more like weekly, and this was after several days of not
updating).

There were only two obvious things I noticed: the large number of
updates, and the fact that I got an error message and a hang when
shutting down that referred to the SCIM initialization. I do not know
if this was the initial install of SCIM or if previous installs and
updates just did not generate any errors so I had not noticed it.

I was able to get past the problem by reinstalling 8.04 from the CD, and
then I used the Synaptic Package Manager to update all packages,
unchecked all the updates that referred to SCIM, and rebooted (as
requested). I then updated the SCIM packages and all worked well.
