[Bug 223780] Re: hdc: status error: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }

2008-05-27 Thread Waldgeist_dI
I have to correct myself:

It's a BenQ DW1650, the Plextor's real name is PX-W2410TA.

It seems to me as if my box was affected by both Bug #182996 and this
one here, because the Plextor drive is now working. To summarize my
findings:

Plextor alone either as SLave or MAster: ok.
BenQ alone as MA: problem.
BenQ alone as SL: ok.

I hope that means something to someone ;)! Just for good measure I'll
throw in the same logs as last time (from the boot with BenQ as SL).

[Bug 235287] Re: doesnt work any more !!!

2008-05-27 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-05-27 Thread Dennis Noordsij
My 4 year old ibook will sit completely silent for 10-20 minutes at a
time without any fan or disk activity while you browse the web.

That is the essence of my bug report. Not wether it fsyncs once on every
pageview or once every minute.

[Bug 212092] Re: firefox crashed randomly with segmentation fault

2008-05-27 Thread EliCoten
I have had this problem only since upgrading to Hardy. When I first
installed Gusty I had a similar problem but then the problem
disappeared.

Now I've upgraded the problem has come back again. I tried installing
SwiftWeasel 2.0.0.14, which is very slightly more reliable (and a lot
faster) but that also crashes randomly.

When Firefox crashes there is just a note in the terminal segmentation
fault.

I noticed it happens more often when accessing big pages like GMail,
Google Docs, and Facebook - but it has happened at all different times.
Sometimes when scrolling up/down long pages or closing tabs but it seems
pretty random.

[Bug 235293] Re: cierre de ventana cuando cierra p estaña

[Bug 235292] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.04 fails to boot on ECS MCP78M-M2 motherboard

2008-05-27 Thread Anthony Fok
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu fails to boot on a very new ECS MCP78M-M2 motherboard with the
nVidia MCP78 (nForce 730a?) chipset due to SATA timeout.

We have tested 7.04 (feisty), 7.10 (gutsy) and now 8.04 (hardy) with
linux-image-2.6.24-16-generic, and none is able to boot from the LiveCD.

At an earlier test, we installed Ubuntu 8.04 on another machine, then
attached the hard drive to ECS MCP78M-M2. Still, unable to boot. I
then experimented with Debian's latest 2.6.25-1-686 kernel, and... it
worked! :-)

 * 2.6.24-16-generic: No
 * 2.6.25-1-686 (Debian): Yes!
 * 2.6.24-18-generic (: Yes!
 * 2.6.24-17-generic: No
 * 2.6.25-1-generic: Yes!  (From
https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive)

Unfortunately, that's not the entire story. Apparently, a custom Ubuntu
8.04 LiveCD with /casper/vmlinuz and /casper/initrd.gz replaced with
2.6.25-1-generic does not boot from SATA DVD-ROM drive. A dmesg output
is attached.

(Note: the /bin/dmesg in initrd.gz from the klibc-utils package is
buggy. I copied the normal /bin/dmesg from util-linux to a USB stick in
order to get the correct output. See Bug#235282 for more information.)

[Bug 157623] Re: displayconfig-gtk and gnome-display-properties show incorrect refresh rate options

2008-05-27 Thread Stefan Bethge
I think it makes sense to just add that option to xorg.conf when the nvidia
module is activated in restricted driver manger.
After I activated the module under hardy, it asked me to reboot and after
restarting it changed my resolution and refresh rate to really unusable values.

[Bug 228067] Re: lyx 1.5.3-1 crashes as soon as it starts

2008-05-27 Thread Emblem Parade
Glad it works for you, guys!

make install is necessary only if you want to fully install it in your
system. If you do that, I recommend that you remove the LyX you
installed from the repositories first, otherwise the two versions will
mix with each other.

I know it leaves a big directory... as I stated, my solution is meant
to be temporary, until LyX is fixed in the repositories, in which you
case you can delete that big directory and return exactly to where you
were before, with no harm to your system.

[Bug 218869] Re: 8.04 Hardy: OpenJDK Java Web Start doesn't work with Firefox 3 if use default settings

2008-05-27 Thread fINTiP
I believe I have the same problem... I previously used to just type
javaws into the terminal to open up Java Web Start, so I could then
select from the applications I have installed; now it opens a
certificates window. When I try to type javaws
http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban/jnlp; (as per instructions at
gokgs.com, which have worked on every other system I have tried it on),
I get an error message:

netx: Launch Error: Could not launch JNLP file.
(java.lang.NullPointerException null)

I don't know what netx is, or why it's trying to take over this
operation...

Help is greatly appreciated.

[Bug 235295] [NEW] Please sync dbmix 0.9.8-6 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-05-27 Thread Albin Tonnerre
Public bug reported:

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

 status confirmed

Please sync dbmix 0.9.8-6 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

The only ubuntu change (fix quoting problem) is fixed in debian

Changelog since current intrepid version 0.9.8-5ubuntu1:

dbmix (0.9.8-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * configure{,.in}: Fix quoting problem that makes script break with dash.
Patch thanks to Luca Falavigna. Closes: #459055
  * *: As XMMS has been obsoleted and is about to be removed from Debian,
stop building package xmms-dbmix, and wipe all traces of XMMS and
dbplaylist from the rest of the packages. A replacement plugin offering
similar functionality does not exist, alas, as DBMix is no longer
being developed upstream. Closes: #456732
  * debian/{compat,rules}: Bump debhelper compatibility level to 5.
  * debian/control: Get rid of obsolete substitution variable Source-Version.
  * debian/dbmix.menu: Adjust menu sections according to current menu-policy.
  * debian/control: Package complies with version 3.7.3 of Debian policy.
  * debian/rules: Do not ignore errors from make distclean to shut up lintian.

[Bug 230507] Re: Nautilus shows static mounted Partition which are not mounted under /media [hardy]

2008-05-27 Thread Sam
Hi Sebastien,
everything is mounted fine, but that was not my point.
New is in Hardy, that the partition which is mounted within the home/user
appears twice in nautilus, with its folder name in home/user and as 50 GB
Medium, there in the tree view and also in the menu places. It is also listed
twice in the gvfs list.
Before the upgrade, in Gutsy, this partition was hidden, it was only visible in
home/user as a folder, but nowhere as a 50 GB Medium.
Question is how to make it unvisible again, like it was before.

[Bug 64289] Re: right end + right key = next row

2008-05-27 Thread A. Walton
A fix was committed for this in what is due to become Nautilus 2.24, to
be included in Ibex. I think the patch mostly stands for itself so it
might be able to be backported to Hardy if someone's interested in
giving it a shot, however it does adds significant complexity for a
stable release and it still needs to be UI reviewed (I'm not
particularly sure I like the result of going up at the top of a

[Bug 235298] [NEW] Redcloth brakes ruby load_path

2008-05-27 Thread Paul RIVIER
Public bug reported:

In Hardy, RedCloth installs redcloth.rb in /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/
First line of redcloth.rb is : $:.unshift(File.dirname(__FILE__))
This means /usr/lib/ruby/1.8 is placed ON TOP of the ruby load_path.
In other words, when redcloth has been loaded, you can NEVER EVER load a file
named foo if /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/foo already exists.

This prevents you from :
 * using a more recent library in your application directory
 * upgrading through gems or through plugins
 * many other common things.

Please take a closer look at the way redcloth is distributed. As a quick-fix,
you can maybe first check that this path is not already in load-path before
pushing it on top. Or, you can bet redcloth.rb would not have been found at all
if it was not already in the path, and just drop this addition.
In present form, it makes RedCloth package totally useless.

Thanks for your effort,

Regards

duplicate bug that you marked, but I believe that this may actually be
an issue with the sony-laptop module as I am able to change my

[Bug 234927] Re: delay php script execution on cli

2008-05-27 Thread Adam Sommer
So I started installing each of the modules you listed which I didn't
have, and I think clamavlib is the culprit. What happens, I believe, is
that php5-libclamav will load the signature database when PHP is called
from the command line. I think the library was written to be used with
Apache which should load the db only when Apache starts or the db is
updated programatically.

Anyway, can you test this by commenting the following lines in
/etc/php5/cli/php.ini:
  #extension=clamav.so
  #[clamav]
  #clamav.dbpath=/var/lib/clamav
  #clamav.maxreclevel=0
  #clamav.maxfiles=0
  #clamav.archivememlim=0
  #clamav.maxfilesize=0
  #clamav.maxratio=0

Then rerun the script from the CLI? When I commented the lines the test
script you posted above executed at normal speed.

Thanks

[Bug 231282] Re: VLC problem with ISO DVD Files

2008-05-27 Thread Laszlo Almasi
This is not a bug but a setting of the launch command. Sorry for posting
from my end..

MMarking, try this:
To change the launch command for vlc: Right click on Applications - Edit menus
- Choose sound and video on left side, right click on vlc on right side -
Properties and change command to this: vlc %mfrom vlc %U (or %F)
I guess what it does is it makes vlc open the file as DVD with menus instead of
a simple DVD. Or something like that..

Let's try posting these kind of things on ubuntuforums before. We might get a
reply quicker especially if it's not really a bug.
Cheers

[Bug 214914] Re: jockey-gtk crashed with AttributeError in enabled()

2008-05-27 Thread g.bruno
After rebooting twice (!), the hardware driver window opened correctly
with the mentioned bug fix. But I wonder why it shows only one driver
(nvidia), while in the corresponding package many drivers are listed.
Perhaps because the other hardware is missing?

Furthermore, although enabled, the nvidia driver does not work: I get
only a low resolution (800x600) and can change it by System-
Einstellungen-Bildschirmauflösung (Settings - screen resolution). And
the x-nvidia-config- tool does not work either: drver not active or so.

Is this a problem of jockey-gtk or of the nvidia-driver?

Thanks for helping me.

[Bug 183729] Re: utmp not cleared on tty logout

2008-05-27 Thread dcobra
Here's the workaround I found myself, in case somebody is interested.
Install the runit package, which seems to handle utmp better than
upstart does, copy the /etc/sv/getty-5 directory that comes with it to
/etc/sv/getty-1 through getty-4 and getty-6, modify the run and finish
scripts and the supervise link in these directories, changing the tty
numbers accordingly. Finally, stop upstart from running getty by moving
/etc/event.d/tty? elsewhere and tell runit to take charge of running
them by making soft links from /etc/service/getty-? to /etc/sv/getty-?.
That's it, no more stale utmp entries.

I'm still interested if anybody cares to comment on whether there is a
better workaround than this one.

As a side note, pardon my ignorance, but I thought moving a bug upstream
meant that it is actually caused by some other bug in an underlying
package, but I couldn't find the continuation of this bug anywhere in
launchpad. So is it abandoned or where was it taken up?

[Bug 235303] [NEW] F-spots reloads image and resets zoom after tagging

2008-05-27 Thread tiefflieger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

When I'm in View Edit Mode, the image gets reloaded everytime I add
a tag to it. Is that really necessary? In my understanding, f-spot just
updates its database and not the image itself. That makes tagging of big
images ( 6 Megapixel) quite a big job for the pc (my pc: Doublecore AMD
64, 2GB RAM), and another anoying effect is that the zoom gets reset,
too.

[Bug 235302] [NEW] pg_upgradecluster picks wrong encoding (LATIN1 instead of UTF8)

2008-05-27 Thread Ronald van Engelen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: postgresql-common

After upgrading from gutsy (postgresql-8.2) to hardy (postgresql-8.3) is tried
to upgrade my 'main' cluster' using `sudo
pg_upgradecluster 8.2 main`. It however chooses the wrong encoding LATIN1
instead of UTF8 which is used in all of the databases
and renders the resulting databases unusable.

Version '88' from intrepid resulted in the same errors.

It seems related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/postgresql-common/+bug/207779.

`locale` returns the following:
LANG=nl_NL.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=nl_NL:nl
LC_CTYPE=nl_NL.UTF-8

[Bug 235284] Re: Suspend-to-ram broken on IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T61p [FIXED]

2008-05-27 Thread Christian Iversen
Thanks :)

Yeah, I've seen the same problem occasionally.

I don't know exactly why it happens, but I'm convinced it can be fixed
by doing either a xrefresh or setting DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH to true.

Maybe you could try creating an executable shell script in /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/90xrefresh, with the following contents?

[[[
#!/bin/bash

case $1 in
thaw|resume)
xrefresh
;;
esac

exit $?
]]]

[Bug 235222] Re: Totem Gstreamer Hue Keep Changing (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS)

2008-05-27 Thread Matteo Settenvini
Maybe I can help with this, since it's at least 6 months I'm seeing this
intermittently on my PPC machine (could be related to the nv video
drivers, dunno).

What happens is:
* start a movie in Totem, for example a mpeg4 video; the color is not very
bright,
and sometimes a kind of sepia tone.
* go to Preferences, and look at the Hue and Saturation sliders. They're all in
the middle. You can reset them with the appropriate button if necessary: the
movie colors still don't show right.
* bring the slider of Hue to the right-end of the line
* now colors of the movie are back to normal: of an acceptable intensity and
the movie is watchable.

The Hue and Saturation sliders seem to have an effect only on some cases
and not on others; for example, I can reproduce this bug without problem
on my PPC machine with an nVidia card, but those sliders do absolutely
nothing no matter how I set them on my x86 machine with an i810 driver.
But maybe this is a different kind of bug.

I'll try and see if I can take a screenshot of the issue -- but as I
said, this bug is intermittent.

[Bug 223421] Re: Computer hangs after switch user or lock screen

2008-05-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Same problem here. Lenovo Thinkpad, T60p with ATI video. I do have
desktop effects enabled.

I usually don't notice it until I come back to work the next day (hours
long wait, happens every day since 8.04 upgrade from 7.10), but today I
experienced it in what must have been a few minutes of going into a
black screen. Similar to other reports, there are other signs of life,
when I press the power button I see disk activity as though something is
responding to the button push. otherwise, no dice. just a black
screen. There are other similar issues happing with the install, such
as gnome-panel becoming unresponsive when I left click the clock applet;
I'm presuming these are different unrelated, but thought I'd mention
just in case there's meaningful correlation. Also, virtualbox with
windows xp guest is almost also running and is often times the last
application I've used (keyboard capture?); again can't prove a
correlation, but can't dismiss the possibility.

Don't know what other data I could provide that could be helpful. Would
be happy to do so if feasible/guided.
