[Bug 120199] Re: ntp daemon not reconfigured by /etc/network

2008-07-14 Thread Hew
Your report states that there are problems with /etc/network/if-up.d/ntp
and /etc/network/ntp-server, but these files do not exist in Intrepid,
and from what I can tell, ntp works just fine. In addition, there have
been many changes to ntp since this bug was reported, so this is why we
ask that you please test with either Hardy or Intrepid to see if the
problem still exists in the latest version.

I did not make any accusations of fault, and never suggested that this
report was going to be closed before the issue has been resolved. We
only wish to determine if the report still documents a valid issue in
Ubuntu. Thanks again.

[Bug 248358] [NEW] Paper size setting for HP Photosmart D7200 doesn't work

2008-07-14 Thread habrys
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. Go to System - Administration - Printing - Printer Options
set Media Size to Photo or 4x6 inch index card
Printout Mode to Photo (on photo paper)
Media Source to Photo Tray
2. Print any photo from F-Spot.
The printer reports (on its LCD screen) Wrong paper size. Photos cannot be
printed.
I changed loglevel of cups to debug and tried the above steps again. One can
clearly see, that the paper size sent to printer is A4, no matter what's set in
Printer Options.

Additional information:
1. I use Ubuntu 8.04.1 32-bit.
2. HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2).
3. CUPS 1.3.7-1ubuntu3 (the latest version as of 14.07.2008).
4. Pages in A4 format can be printed without problems.
5. Printing of 4x6 photos from F-Spot on my printer worked flawlessly in Ubuntu
7.10. I had to manually build and install a newer version of HPLIP, which
supports Photosmart D7200 printer to achieve that, though. After distribution
upgrade printing of photos stopped working, as described above. I doesn't work
on a fresh installed Ubuntu 8.04.1 either.
6. I have another printer: HP Photosmart 7550, which prints flawlessly 4x6
photos from F-Spot - the system-wide paper size setting seems to work here.
7. It doesn't matter if the Photosmart D7200 is connected via USB or Network
interface. The symptoms are the same in both configurations.

It's unclear to me if it's a system-wide problem (cups, hplip or maybe
the 7200s ppd file) or an F-Spot bug. There is no possibility to set
paper size directly from F-Spot. I installed Gwenview, where one can set
paper size to override the system setting. It works: I'm able to print
4x6 photos from Gwenview, no matter what paper size is set in the
system-wide Printer Options. So Gwenview seems to be able to override
the system-wide setting.

[Bug 246556] Re: Default theme background texture scaled wrong

2008-07-14 Thread Mike Rooney
Thanks Amir for confirming. You are right, this is not good behavior,
but that's why it is a bug ;). The timing script was to figure out if
timing was the issue, and was meant to be a temporary workaround as well
if needed. Keep in mind if Ubuntu were Windowsish you wouldn't even
have the ability to use a different window manager/compositor, nor would
third-party software like cairo-clock be supported by the OS company.
Try telling Microsoft you found a bug in software like Firefox for
example, and see if they care ;) We want things to be easy with Ubuntu,
but certainly not Windows-like.

[Bug 248363] [NEW] VMD OpenGL package crashes X and aparently everything else as well.

2008-07-14 Thread Zaca
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When trying to use the VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) package in Ubuntu Hardy
(the problem
was present in 7.10 as well), I get random X freezes from which I need to
hard-reboot. Actually
the mouse continues to move, but the keyboard becomes totally unresponsive. I
cannot
say if it was a kernel crash or only a X crash, since I cannot use the
alternate ttys.

VMD is an OpenGL molecular graphics application. I'm not using desktop effects.
I'm not
sure how to track this bug further. Here I send my xorg.0.log after reboot and
the xorg.0.log.old,
which contains errors and maybe is the log file before the hard-reboot, I'm not
sure.

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-07-14 Thread Wolfgang Glas
OK, after all this mess, I skimmed through the 2.6.25 changelogs looking
for possible deadlock fixes.

The first commit that seems to be conistent with my own experience is:

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=b000cd3707e7b25d76745f9c0e261c23d21fa578

This is a problem in certain unusual states of the TCP/IP-stack. Since
many users experience the deadlock with wireless and/or dialup
connections, this might be the right one to look at, since sequence
holes are something that might typically occur on such connections.

Can a developer please tell me, whether this patch is already applied to
2.6.24-19 ? If no, would it be possible to provide a testing kernl with
this patch applied?

  TIA,

Wolfgang

[Bug 135110] Re: [gutsy] firefox freezes with google toolbar enabled when you attemp to open more than two windows

2008-07-14 Thread alastairb
I think a problem I have just reported in the Greasemonkey ticket system
is a version of this one

http://greasemonkey.devjavu.com/ticallket/145

When I visit the following URL with either Google Toolbar or
Greasemonkey as the only extension enabled, my browser freezes and has
to be killed off.

http://www.scherer-reisen.de/reisen/de/home.php

(This is with Firefox 3.0 on Kubuntu Hardy Heron)

With the standard version of Firefox, rather than Hardy's, I have no
problems viewing this page, no matter what plugins are installed.

I am not sure how ubuntu is handling user security. I opened the folder
with Nautilus, it asked me for user credentials, I entered them and
asked ubuntu to remember forever my credentials which are credentials
for administrator that have full rights on the shared folder. When files
were showed, I choosed open with Gthumb and continued working with
gthumb, so I can't tell which rights I have on shared folder. In any
case if I can't write it would be expected Gthumb to warn me.

[Bug 235698] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in pthread_mutex_lock()

2008-07-14 Thread Austin Lund
I am able to recreate this one now. The following is the recipe:

1. Start with a working DBus session.
2. Run the gvfs-fuse-daemon
3. Kill the DBus session without disconnecting the gvfs-fuse-daemon session.

You should find that it crashes under these conditions and gives exactly
the backtraces given above.

Note that most of your desktop will also be killed off.

Works on Acer Extensa 5520.

[Bug 248369] [NEW] Very slow boot and/or hangs on FSC D1184 Board with 512M RAM. 256M works fine / pre Hardy worked.

Board: FSC D1184
RAM: 512M
Symptoms: Boot is very slow and hangs most of the time. If it boots the PS/2
Keyboard doesn't work and the system is very slow.

The System boots fine with 256M RAM and the 2.6.24-19 Kernel. Gutsy and

same problem on the same hardware. That rules out hardware errors.

The kernel boots flawlessly with the kernel option mem=522176K. Maybe
the physical memory mapping is broken?

[Bug 248372] [NEW] Nautilus crash makes desktop icons and right-click vanish until restart

2008-07-14 Thread James-C
Public bug reported:

Nautilus crashed on me recently and later I noticed all icons
disappeared from the gnome desktop, (current ubuntu hardy with all
updates to this date). In addition right-clicking on the desktop
wouldn't work (and similar things like rubber-band selecting icons
(which weren't displayed in any case)). After a reboot, removing any
tmp files, full shutdown and reboot, and restarting and trying
everything else I could think of, if I started nautilus from a gnome-
terminal, and shut it down again properly and my icons, right-click
abilities, etc. returned. I'm unable to duplicate this (how do I force
nautilus to crash poorly to begin with? I don't remember what I was
doing!) I post this bug in case it is useful to pass upstream and as a
record in case anyone else encounters the same problem. The clue to
restart nautilus was given by this old fedora post:
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Fedora/2004-07/5596.html and I
thought it worth trying.

Bug exists but is non-critical, but impacts ability for inexperienced
user to use the gnome UI. I'm not entirely sure the nautilus is the
source of the bug, but restarting it cured the symptoms. It might be a
GDM bug. Sorry that this isn't very helpful.

[Bug 248376] [NEW] VMWare server causes keyboard problems in ubuntu host

2008-07-14 Thread James-C
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vmware-server

Running VMWare-server, current Ubuntu Hardy with all patches up to this date,
with a pre-made WinXP guest operating system VM, causes all sorts of
keyboard-related problems when I swap between the guest operating system and
the host. I.e. I use the host operating system and suddenly can't type capital
letters, other keys accidentally shut windows, minimize windows, etc. while
attempting to use any other applications.

Selecting a different keyboard layout (say US Keyboard variant) , and
then reverting (back to UK keyboard layout) makes the problem go away
until the guest operating system is accessed again. During this all
keys work as expected when the guest operating system has focus.

I post it in case it is indicative of some problem in Gnome's keyboard
handling or the vmware-server package, or in case someone is looking for
a workaround. (i.e. select different keyboard layout, apply, select
original keyboard layout, apply.)

Non-critical, but annoying.

[Bug 248372] Re: Nautilus crash makes desktop icons and right-click vanish until restart

2008-07-14 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-07-14 Thread Hew
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

If this is a wishlist report, note that you can already backup your
firefox bookmarks. Go to Bookmarks - Organise Bookmarks - Import and
Backup - Backup.

[Bug 189702] Re: Files transferred to K850i have truncated metadata

2008-07-14 Thread Alexander Jones
K850i (and my previous phone, K750i) seems to have a faulty
implementation of ID3v2.3. There needs to be some way for us to note
that it only supports as new as ID3v2.2, perhaps in a HAL property. The
suppported formats list of MIME Media Types is just not descriptive
enough.

Furthermore, if this is the only resolution, the ID3 mux element in
GStreamer needs to support muxing to an older version.

I will continue my investigations, but please understand that reverse
engineering takes ages.

Re: [Bug 204775] Re: selecting gnome panel intlclock causes top bar and many other things to not respond

2008-07-14 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Mart,

On Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 11:17:09AM -, Mart van Ineveld wrote:
This same bug occured on my Ubuntu system (8.04). It was gone for a couple
of months (weeks?). But now it is back suddenly. I always apply the lates

If I click on the Clock applet, the desktop freezes. It can be solved bij
opening a terminal (for instance with Ctrl+Alt+F2), and killing the
gnome-panel process. After refreshing the panels on the original desktop
 everything works fine again.
It seems that one of the most recent updates reintroduced this bug?

If you want more information, please let me know.

This bug is believed resolved as of gnome-panel 1:2.22.1.2-0ubuntu3. There
have been two stable release updates of gnome-panel since that time, but the
most recent of these was at the beginning of June and no regressions have
been reported since then (until now).

If the freeze clears itself after a restart, that also doesn't appear to be
consistent with this bug. It's possible that an update of a separate
package confused gnome-panel and caused the freeze; I've seen this
behavior myself before on upgrades but it was never reproducible and was not
pinned down. I would suggest that you open a separate bug report for
tracking this issue.

Cheers,

[Bug 239182] Re: segfualt in cairo_draw_with_xlib

2008-07-14 Thread Conn
John, agreed it's better to leave Hardy alone.

As for Intrepid, this bug still exists. The solution is to either wait
for Firefox 3.0.1 (although I'm not sure it will include the fix), or
manually backport the changes as mentioned by Felix (and on the upstream
bug). Intrepid already has up-to-date alsa-lib files, so once bug
#198453 is fixed (to set the proper .asoundrc), Flash will work
correctly, and libflashsupport (see bug #192888) will no longer be a
requirement to get PulseAudio output working.

- if the application is known, then the file is correctly opened
- if the application is not known (I tried to open a file without extension --
Sconstruct), and a program is manually indicated via open with.., then a new
file is shown instead in gedit.

Your report states that there are problems with /etc/network/if-up.d/ntp

The problem isn't those files. It is the functionality. The fact that
the files no longer exist at all might in fact mean that the situation
is worse, not that it is better.

and from what I can tell, ntp works just fine.

Okay, if you're sure there is no problem, what restarts ntp when a
machine wakes from sleep on a laptop? If it is not restarted, it is
likely not to have the correct ntp servers in use, and it will not
have the time properly synchronized.

the .png extension. They are in fact HTML pages. The HTML page in

[Bug 248193] Re: Firefox crashes oppening SVG files

2008-07-14 Thread Hew
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Viewing svg files in firefox-3.0 works for me. Please
answer the following questions:

* Could you please provide some example links that you have experienced the
problem with?
* If you have reported this issue before, what is the original bug number? It
would be more useful to solve the problem using that report rather than dealing
with duplicates.
* Does apport produce a crash report when firefox crashes? Since you are
running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in
/etc/default/apport and restart.

Thanks in advance!
