Thanks Alan,

As someone who has been using Linux for a while I find this shocking
though. I have a BIOS password running aswell, but if I compare it to
some other OS's it doesn't look good. Why is this designed in this way?
Is it all distro's thats like this? And don't you think this should be
changed?

Also, doesn't encryption reduce performance?

[Bug 268080] [NEW] upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 alpha 2 resets video to low

2008-09-09 Thread Hein van Dam
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 freshly updated on 2 partitions, one I have used for updating to
8.10 with update-manager -d.
I have kept the old /boot/grub/menu.lst as Ubuntu chooses the wrong hard disk

Restart gives only low resolution for the untouched partition as well!

Hardware: Integrated ATI Radeon X1250-based graphics
  Acer P191W LCD Monitor Max. Resolution 1440 x 900 @60Hz which

[Bug 189958] Re: sdl and evdev for mice does not work (xorg 1.4)

2008-09-09 Thread klerfayt
Ok. I'm not going to do clean install of kubuntu hardy heron (8.04)
since the mouse wheel problem is back. Fortunately I found out how it
fixed itself - I've to plug in USB Logitech RumblePad 2 joystick, reboot
laptop and unplug the joystick (remove the joystick) as soon as I see
the BIOS screen. This way the mousewheel acts normally in kubuntu 8.04
until the odd behavior comes back after some time, certain actions(?).

In short:
plug in joystick
reboot kubuntu 8.04
unplug the joystick then I see BIOS screen
mouse works ok until some action(s) returns the odd behavior (I'm not sure at
this point what resets bug)
repeat the cycle

- this has no effect for kubuntu 8.10 intrepid; also mouse works fine
without any tricks in kubuntu 7.10 gutsy

[Bug 267086] Re: Changing passwords without asking for the original one

2008-09-09 Thread Alan Pope
If you have a BIOS password then this will stop the casual person from
walking up to your PC and rebooting into single user mode - as would
encryption. If you compare it to other OS's it's the same. If I am
standing at your computer and you're running Windows, OSX or Linux, I
(and you don't use encryption) then I can probably get access to all
your data and change your password.. It's not unique to Linux.

In some heavy use applications it's possible that encryption may degrade
the performance of the system. However for most 'average' users they
will not notice the difference. There are many articles online about
disk encryption performance.

[Bug 240030] Re: Miro always crashes with a SIGSEV when playing a video

2008-09-09 Thread Nicolas_Raoul
It is not an upgrade problem:
I just ran Miro for the first time on an Ubuntu Hardy installed from scratch,
and Miro segfaults whenever I click on Play.
The videos are downloaded in .miro/Miro, though, I can play them with vlc.

[Bug 224780] Re: Hardy - Myth Control Centre - optimize_mythdb.pl moved?

2008-09-09 Thread JB5
Hi - sorry for being so slow getting back to you on this.

I am happy to test the proposed fix, but I'm not exactly sure what to do
with a debdiff file!

I am trying to follow the guide shown here:-
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuPackagingGuide/BuildFromDebdiff

Trouble is, I do not know which source package I need to download to
apply the debdiff to! (step 4!)

I've tried various package names, but keep getting something like
E: error package unknown

[Bug 258110] Re: Camera application cannot record video

2008-09-09 Thread Oliver Grawert
yes, but that patch also needs the gstreamer fixes that were uploaded...
as outlined on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates both packages wait
for the quarantaine to expire and two positive comments from testers.
feel free to install them on an image from the hardy-proposed repository and
confirm they work ... the faster we get positive comments on this bug the
earlier i can roll the final image.
cheese is not used in normal ubuntu, so it is not that critical, but we need to
avoid any regressions in gstreamer so that needs very tough testing...

[Bug 240738] Re: syndaemon sometimes fails to disable the touchpad

2008-09-09 Thread Scott Thatcher
This problem is even more apparent to me when running syndaemon -i 0.5
-k

About every third keystroke doesn't trigger the Disable/Enable. While
typing, for example, fff..., quickly, it is still very possible to
use the trackpad, although it is jumpy. I know syndaemon used to work
correctly for me--I remember testing it when I first discovered the
command. That was back in Gutsy. I've only recently started noticing
this annoying behavior, although I switched to Hardy back in May. Could
something else have changed recently?

My hardware is an HP tx1000 laptop, and I get this:

Will this driver be able to reach the Intrepid release and be official?

Bruno tested with WPA, we don't have a WEP accesspoint around.
The decision of whether to include that module is now up to the kernel
team, we are past the Feature Freeze so I'm not sure how it works for
the kernel but a freeze exception may be needed in order to include it.

[Bug 268095] [NEW] MASTER Network Manager should probe for GSM and CDMA command sets. It doesnt detect 3g modems with serial capability only in hal

2008-09-09 Thread Alexander Sack
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

problem is that almost all modems are detected as serial v.250 modems,
but that isnt enough for NM to decide whether its a GSM or CDMA modem.

Without that info network manager cannot properly detect which commands
to use and ends up not supporting them.

Adding all the pci ids to the modem.fdi isnt the way to go. instead we
need to use AT commands to probe whether its a CDMA or GSM modem.

This probing could be done as a hal hook or in NM directly. The right
approach has yet to be decided.

[Bug 210725] Re: Please include RaLink RT2860 driver

2008-09-09 Thread Giovanni Masucci
From what I've understood we need a vanilla tar.gz from ralink and the
separate patches used by Eric to consider official inclusion in Intrepid, am I
correct?
So here's a clean Ralink tar.gz. Note that this version is from 15/07 and
already has the patch to have both WEP and WPA (Thanks Adam!).
http://www.itwriting.com/DPO_RT28xx_60_LinuxSTA_V1.7.0.0_2008_07_15.tgz
It should already have the EEEPC_SPECIAL_SETTING option set, so we just need
to add Eric's patches and we are set with these drivers. =)
Does anybody has the list of the patches added by Eric?

When provided with the noapic option is does show still show this

[Bug 268096] [NEW] mogrify says No decode delegate for this image format

[Bug 268097] [NEW] Please move bluez plugins to main

2008-09-09 Thread Onkar Shinde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez-input

Currently bluez-utils source creates various binary package. Out of
these, 3 are introduced in intrepid - bluez-network, bluez-serial,
bluez-input.

These binary packages are currently in universe and hence not on CD or

functionality provided by these packages was part of bluez-utils

It seems quite clear that libsvn 1.5.1 is not binary compatible with
libsvn 1.4.x.

This means that all the programs depending on libsvn should also be added to
hardy-backports.
(could be a problem for kdesvn since KDE4.1 is the default in 8.10)

I compiled kdesvn 1.0.1 against the new libsvn and that worked.

[Bug 257901] Re: Suggestion: GUI frontend(s) for ecryptfs-utils

2008-09-09 Thread Tobias Wolf
I think the vault should be locked/unlocked in situ, i.e., right inside
the folder view. This may be possible in Nautilus with a ribbon on top
similar to the Trash view.

I’m a fan of this:

I'll attach a mockup of how I feel it would work well. This is of course
not possible in open/save dialogs.
