[Bug 269377] [NEW] Make Policykit Match Gksu

2008-09-12 Thread Wouter Stomp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: policykit-gnome

Make the policykit authorization dialog match the gksu dialog.
Currently, only gksu features fade and policykit has a window border
while gksu does not. These inconsistencies give the appearance of an
unprofessional operating system and have no apparent purpose.
Considering their similar function, it seems obvious that the two match.

[Bug 256571] Re: Arrows keys disabled when enabling keyboard layouts

2008-09-12 Thread JonathanTurner
I also had a similar problem. After booting up the daily-live, the USA
keyboard layout was chosen, and just as you described no arrow keys
worked.

They started working after I dug through the Keyboard settings and set
the keyboard model to something similar to what I have (in my case a
Dell PC-101)

I think it's reasonable to expect a working layout to be chosen by
default since people aren't likely going to go through the type this
key, now type this key wizard unless they have to.

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2008-09-12 Thread Thomas Pi
Now I have made some tests with itrepid. The io wait time is lower and the
throughput is higher with and without concurrent disc access as in hardy or
gutsy. But the desktop responsiveness problem still exists.
The overall throughput of concurrent disc access is about 30% lower than on my
2.6.18 kernel.

When writing eight 2GB files concurrent on the disc, there is difference
between the written data during the operation is up to 500 MB. All
writing operations start at the same time. This difference is much lower
(~200MB) under the 2.6.18 kernel

The kernel signature is Ubuntu 2.6.27-2.3-generic.

My tests results are only simulated once, because I was not able to use
vmware or virtualbox and create a real working environment.

[Bug 269377] Re: Make Policykit Match Gksu

2008-09-12 Thread James Westby
Hi,

policykit is intended to be used instead of gksu, so hopefully there will only
be one in the future.

Also, policykit doesn't grab fullscreen, and is intended to be more like a
normal
window, so it may not be appropriate to do the same effects.

However, it may still be desired.

Mirco, is there any plan to modify the policykit-gnome dialogs as well?

Thanks,

James

Subject: [Bug 234015] Re: blueproximity is unable to find bluetooth devices

Hi,

Sorry I catch on this bug so late, is it still there?
Is only scanning affected or even the whole communication?

Do you have (I cannot see that in dmesg but ask for it anyway) another
bluetooth device connected? Could you post the output of the hciconfig
command please?

What is the output of this command: dpkg --status python-bluez ?

2008-09-12 Thread ^rooker
I wouldn't be too sure of that, because regular users probably got their
computer installed by a non-regular user. :)
However, it would also be nice to avoid possible hazzle for skilled users -
especially breaking something that used to work previously.

This error is very likely to go unnoticed until someone wants to burn a
CD and is in a hurry.

[Bug 210303] Re: [hardy] kaffeine loops on Codec package is already installed

2008-09-12 Thread TWO
I've been redirected to this bug report as I submitted one earlier
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kaffeine/+bug/269359) with
regard to this problem happening with .mov files.

Further to my bug report, it seems that the problem is intermittent when
it comes to .mov files. I downloaded a few more just to test the
problem, and with one of the .mov files Kaffeine played without a
problem. The same was true of another file that I downloaded, however
upon clicking 'x' to close that particular instance of Kaffeine, the
program would crash and give the backtrace error that I have provided as
an attachment.

I am a little baffled as to why the chances of playback should vary from
file to file in spite of them all being the same file type.

Alexander,

Thanks much for the fix option, but that file doesn't seem to be working
out, at least for me..

I dropped in /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/20thirdparty/ as
10-usb3g.fdi, mimicked the appropriate permissions, and rebooted the
system to be sure it would take.

Plug in the 3g device, no go.. So, what should I see in NM to indicate
success anyway? In configuring mobile broadband, I see no place to
specify which device to use, or is that considered something that should
happen automagically?

[Bug 199165] Re: Automounting removable storage doesn't always honour the utf8 mount option

2008-09-12 Thread Vítor Souza
Would anyone be so kind as to provide more detailed description on how
to patch the system so we can still use KDE 4.1 while waiting for the
definitive solution to come from the developers?

The patches (mount-utf8.patch and solid.patch at the KDE-bugs page)
change a file named halstorageaccess.cpp, but I don't have that file in
my file system. Do I have to install a src package? Which one? Do I have
to recompile something? What? How? Just make; make install or is there
more to it?

Sorry if I'm the only noob that doesn't understand what to do with the
proposed patches. :)

Thanks!

I am experiencing the same issue (also in 2.6.27-3). If I boot in Hardy
everything works just fine, but in Intrepid Alpha 5, some websites and
apt don't work. All LAN traffic works just fine. I also eliminated any
hardware issues by replacing the route, network line, and the networks

there

[Bug 136836] Re: Ethernet (nVidia MCP55) not working [ gutsy, hardy]

2008-09-12 Thread kieron
I appreciate your workaround Stefan, and it worked for me for a few
days, however today it doesn't, /etc/fmodprobe.d/orcedeth is still there
with the options line and I tried rebuilding the initramfs again but no
go.

The only thing that's changed in the interim is I installed turboprint
(surprise surprise as my canon mp800 printer isn't supported) I don't
know how that could have changed things but I can't think of anything
else.

I wanted to get ubuntu working and switch to it but the fact that you
need to be a computer geek to use it (and I'm obviously not geek enough
with 10 years of programming experience and I don't have any more weeks
of my life I'm prepared to waste on it) and the fact that this bug is
not considered important enough to be dealt with in an update, means
it's back to windows for me.

This network card was (and still is as far as I know) the standard one
for mesh computers in the uk and they supply a large number of pc's.
Still there we go.

Sorry if I sound like a moany old git, I'm just disappointed.

[Bug 269388] [NEW] Xorg eats CPU when using EXA

2008-09-12 Thread maleadt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Since the last batch of updates (where all the xorg video drivers got
updated), I'm experiencing lagspikes in my ubuntu environment. I've
traced this back to Xorg using up to 97% CPU on certain moments. This
only happens when I'm using the EXA acceleration method, instead of the
default XAA one.

With the default XAA, all works very smoothly. But now, with EXA
enabled, Xorg often spikes to 100% CPU, mainly when opening
applications, scrolling or opening textfiles, or spawning new GTK
widgets.

I'm using the EXA acceleration to be able to playback video when using
Compiz. I've also filed a bug to use EXA as default accelerator:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/269357

The Xorg option I used to force EXA:
Option AccelMethod EXA

System details:
  Xorg window system 1:7.4~2ubuntu1
  RADEON display driver 1:6.9.0+git20080826.a3cc1d7a-2ubuntu2

[Bug 254668] Re: [2.6.27] pausing during boot (several issues)

2008-09-12 Thread Stefan Bader
There should be no difference between rc6 and the kernel I supplied (at least
nothing additional which is not in upstream). Are your pauses the same as for
Carl, meaning the boot process stops but can be triggered with any keyboard
key. And after boot everything looks ok?
Or is there no way to boot successfully without the noapictimer option? If boot
hangs do alt+print+q key combinations work for you?
