[Bug 274870] [NEW] Xorg should keep more rotated logs
Public bug reported: Currently Xorg keeps only its current log and old older one. While this is normally fine, there are situations where logs from a failed run can disappear (e.g. the first run wedges your graphics hardware, so the subsequent runs from GDM fail for different reasons and leave unhelpful logs. GDM tries several times, so the original log will be lost). While that is indeed a rare corner case, given how small they are, I think it's probably worth keeping 5 or 6 old logs. There may be other situations where being able to compare several runs, or pull an error out of an older log, are useful. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Status: New ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist -- Xorg should keep more rotated logs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/274870 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It still crashes for me with 2.24.0-0ubuntu1 with the following information in a terminal: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. [Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads
With some help from Dustin Kirkland and Julien Cristau on IRC, I have a working theory for what's causing this: Hardy: kernel acpi event - acpid - /etc/acpi/*btn.sh - acpi_fakekey - /dev/input/eventX - hald-addon-input - hald Intrepid: kernel acpi event - acpid - /etc/acpi/*btn.sh - acpi_fakekey - /dev/input/eventX - X server - *splat* It seems that the X server grabs the relevant /dev/input/eventX with ioctl(EVIOCGRAB), which means it gets exclusive access to the events, so hald-addon-input never hears them. Probably what we want in the end is: kernel acpi event - hald-addon-acpi - hald but that won't fly for Intrepid as it would require ripping and replacing acpi-support with hal FDI files. For Intrepid, we could try to get this working: kernel acpi event - acpid - hald-addon-acpi - hald I believe hald-addon-acpi has native support for the weird thinkpad ACPI events. OR, we could try to make the input events work somehow. [Bug 274878] [NEW] Duplicate entries show up when using the KDE4 application launcher search
Public bug reported: If you search for applications from the KDE4 application launcher, sometimes .desktop files are shown besides the actual applications. For example, if you type firefox into the search field, you get two results: one for the application (with the correct icon) and one for the corresponding .desktop entry (with a standard icon). Clearly, the second one is superfluous and shouldn't be displayed. [Bug 274887] [NEW] system unresponsive/thrashing after long idle time
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager system: intrepid(amd64) with all current updates on a Samsung Q45 laptop problem scenario: I boot up ubuntu and everything works smoothly. However when I leave the laptop running/idling for several hours (power-on in the morning.. get back from work) it either is very unresponsive and suffers from very heavy hdd access to an extent that it takes up to a minute to log in to a terminal session or it sometimes (but not as often) won't respond anymore at all - just a blank screen. I don't have any screensavers configured so I assume the screen is blanked by power preferences. I am not running any special software or tasks. Mostly when idling it is just firefox/evolution/pidgin. When I check top in this troublesome state I cannot spot a responsible process. Redrawing of X applications takes very long and usually the system recovers again after some minutes. I realize this report is terribly lacking in terms of details but I don't see what else I could report that would be of use. The problem arises basically whenever I leave the laptop running for an extended time. If there is any way that I can make this report more usable, let me know. [Bug 274884] [NEW] pulseaudio maximum volume attenuated by alsa mixer setting
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pulseaudio The problem: alsa mixer settings are restored before pulseaudio is started, and therefore pulseaudio's maximum output is scaled downware by the alsa mixer setting. How to reproduce: 1) Kill off pulseaudio. 2) Using ALSA mixer, set your volume to 50% 3) Reboot 4) Notice that all your sound outputs are now really quiet 5) Start alsamixer, note that you can't change anything 6) Kill pulse audio again 7) Start alsamixer again to fix the problem 8) Restart pulseaudio 9) Now everything works fine Proposed solution: pulseaudio should set the underlying hardware mixer devices to 100% before it starts. ** Affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- pulseaudio maximum volume attenuated by alsa mixer setting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/274884 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 261543] Re: awful hack to avoid kernel-helper debconf clash
There actually is a lock; the problem is waiting for it to be free rather than just falling over. The fact that the lock is taken out deep in the internals of debconf and the result of it failing is a message on stderr and an exit code, not a nice exception, doesn't help. You're probably right that waiting for the lock is the right answer though (short of making last-good-boot not use debconf in the boot sequence in the first place!).
