[Bug 274870] [NEW] Xorg should keep more rotated logs

2008-09-26 Thread Chris Jones
Public bug reported:

Currently Xorg keeps only its current log and old older one. While this
is normally fine, there are situations where logs from a failed run can
disappear (e.g. the first run wedges your graphics hardware, so the
subsequent runs from GDM fail for different reasons and leave unhelpful
logs. GDM tries several times, so the original log will be lost).

While that is indeed a rare corner case, given how small they are, I
think it's probably worth keeping 5 or 6 old logs. There may be other
situations where being able to compare several runs, or pull an error
out of an older log, are useful.

[Bug 257349] Re: totem-gstreamer crashed with signal 5 in _XError()

2008-09-26 Thread Brian Murray
It still crashes for me with 2.24.0-0ubuntu1 with the following
information in a terminal:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 90 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I'll attach the problematic video.

[Bug 274715] Re: System Cleaner Does Not Refresh Following Cleaning

2008-09-26 Thread Lars Wirzenius
Found the reason for this: system-cleaner-gtk didn't refresh the
apt.Cache() instance it has after it had removed packages. Therefore,
when it refreshes the list of cruft after a cleanup, it finds the state
of the system to be exactly as it was before the cleanup. Result: a
confused system-cleaner-gtk, and a confused user.

I've fixed this in bzr.

[Bug 274874] [NEW] feature request: gnome-system-log shoud be used as a front end for logrotate.conf

2008-09-26 Thread komputes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Naturally since the logs viewed in gnome-system-log are kept based on
the rules set in etc/logrotate.conf, I think gnome-system-log needs to
be able to set a preference on the number of days/weeks the admin would
like to keep logs. The calendar functionality is great, but it indicates
this feature which is lacks a front end for configuration, I don't think
we need the fine grain control that logrotate.conf offers, but at least
minimal configuration.

This can be accomplished by adding the following functionality:

Edit Preferences

Rotate logs [Pull Down] daily | weekly | monthly
Keep backlogs for [Field] weeks
Compress logs [Radio Buttons] Yes/No

[Bug 269504] Re: Suspend icon is black rectangle in Shut Down dialog

2008-09-26 Thread Gert Kulyk
I've tested your new human-icon-theme package, but it still does show a black
rectangle.
After some investigation I've found out the following:

The icon for the suspend-action at the moment needs to be called sleep, take
e.g. a look at
80_new_upstream_session_dialog.patch from gnome-session sources:

Here is the relevant part (gnome-session-2.24.0/gnome-session/gsm-
logout-dialog.c)

+#define GSM_ICON_LOGOUTsystem-log-out
+#define GSM_ICON_SWITCHsystem-users
+#define GSM_ICON_SHUTDOWN system-shutdown
+#define GSM_ICON_REBOOTview-refresh
+/* TODO: use gpm icons? */
+#define GSM_ICON_HIBERNATE drive-harddisk
+#define GSM_ICON_SLEEP sleep

As you can see, the naming scheme is far from beeing ideal. Maybe a bug
against gnome-session should be filed to use sane icon-names for this
kind of actions (and which are included in gnome/tango/human themes).

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-09-26 Thread Matt Zimmerman
With some help from Dustin Kirkland and Julien Cristau on IRC, I have a
working theory for what's causing this:

Hardy: kernel acpi event - acpid - /etc/acpi/*btn.sh - acpi_fakekey
- /dev/input/eventX - hald-addon-input - hald

Intrepid: kernel acpi event - acpid - /etc/acpi/*btn.sh -
acpi_fakekey - /dev/input/eventX - X server - *splat*

It seems that the X server grabs the relevant /dev/input/eventX with
ioctl(EVIOCGRAB), which means it gets exclusive access to the events, so
hald-addon-input never hears them.

Probably what we want in the end is:

kernel acpi event - hald-addon-acpi - hald

but that won't fly for Intrepid as it would require ripping and
replacing acpi-support with hal FDI files.

For Intrepid, we could try to get this working:

kernel acpi event - acpid - hald-addon-acpi - hald

I believe hald-addon-acpi has native support for the weird thinkpad ACPI
events.

OR, we could try to make the input events work somehow. If X insists on
exclusive access, something in the session would need to listen for
them.

[Bug 274878] [NEW] Duplicate entries show up when using the KDE4 application launcher search

2008-09-26 Thread Michael Ummels
Public bug reported:

If you search for applications from the KDE4 application launcher,
sometimes .desktop files are shown besides the actual applications. For
example, if you type firefox into the search field, you get two
results: one for the application (with the correct icon) and one for the
corresponding .desktop entry (with a standard icon). Clearly, the second
one is superfluous and shouldn't be displayed. See the attached
screenshot.

[Bug 263211] Re: apps-wont-open-due-to-maximum-clients-reached-error

2008-09-26 Thread Roland Dreier
I see this to on an Intrepid system (running gnome, not kde). After a
while, no more X clients can be started, and I get the error 'Maximum
number of clients reachedxlsclients: unable to open display :0.0'

However if I close some client, then I am able to start another client.
And apparently X doesn't see very many clients, eg with a system in this
state that is only able to open one more client, I get:

$ xlsclients
roland-conroe x-session-manager
roland-conroe gnome-settings-daemon
roland-conroe gtk-window-decorator
roland-conroe gnome-screensaver
roland-conroe gnome-panel
roland-conroe nautilus
roland-conroe update-notifier
roland-conroe gnome-power-manager
roland-conroe nm-applet
roland-conroe evolution-alarm-notify
roland-conroe applet.py
roland-conroe evolution-exchange-storage
roland-conroe trashapplet
roland-conroe multiload-applet-2
roland-conroe music-applet
roland-conroe gnome-terminal
roland-conroe notification-daemon

My guess would be some leak in the X server that doesn't fully free up
clients when they exit.

[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid on Thinkpads

2008-09-26 Thread Matt Zimmerman
Assuming these events are going via the ThinkPad Extra Buttons device,
Timo's FDI file seems like a reasonable way to get the current setup
working for Intrepid. I'm attaching it here to avoid digging through
the comments for it again.

There seem to be two outstanding issues though:
- Some folks with non-ThinkPad laptops are having problems (need to file a
separate bug)
- The brightness keys still don't work (needs some analysis, but potentially a
separate bug as well)

The leds device name changed again, to
/sys/class/leds:smc::kbd_backlight/brightness. A possible patch can be

[Bug 274887] [NEW] system unresponsive/thrashing after long idle time

2008-09-26 Thread Tobias Pflug
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

system:

intrepid(amd64) with all current updates on a Samsung Q45 laptop

problem scenario:

I boot up ubuntu and everything works smoothly. However when
I leave the laptop running/idling for several hours (power-on in the
morning.. get back from work) it either is very unresponsive and
suffers from very heavy hdd access to an extent that it takes up
to a minute to log in to a terminal session or it sometimes (but
not as often) won't respond anymore at all - just a blank screen.

I don't have any screensavers configured so I assume the screen
is blanked by power preferences.

I am not running any special software or tasks. Mostly when idling
it is just firefox/evolution/pidgin.

When I check top in this troublesome state I cannot spot a responsible
process. Redrawing of X applications takes very long and usually
the system recovers again after some minutes.

I realize this report is terribly lacking in terms of details but I don't see
what
else I could report that would be of use. The problem arises basically whenever
I leave the laptop running for an extended time.

If there is any way that I can make this report more usable, let me know. This
behavior is rather annoying/troublesome.

[Bug 274884] [NEW] pulseaudio maximum volume attenuated by alsa mixer setting

2008-09-26 Thread Jeffrey Baker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The problem: alsa mixer settings are restored before pulseaudio is
started, and therefore pulseaudio's maximum output is scaled downware by
the alsa mixer setting. Thus you can turn your volume all the way up in
the pulseaudio mixer and still only get half volume. To exacerbate the
problem, pulseaudio hides the underlying alsa mixer device, so you have
to kill pulseaudio to fix it.

How to reproduce:

1) Kill off pulseaudio.
2) Using ALSA mixer, set your volume to 50%
3) Reboot
4) Notice that all your sound outputs are now really quiet
5) Start alsamixer, note that you can't change anything
6) Kill pulse audio again
7) Start alsamixer again to fix the problem
8) Restart pulseaudio
9) Now everything works fine

Proposed solution: pulseaudio should set the underlying hardware mixer
devices to 100% before it starts.

[Bug 274889] [NEW] 80_new_upstream_session_dialog.patch provides insane icon-names for dialogs

2008-09-26 Thread Gert Kulyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

80_new_upstream_session_dialog.patch from gnome-session sources codes
insane icon-names for reboot, hibernate and suspend-actions:

Here is the relevant part (gnome-session-2.24.0/gnome-session/gsm-
logout-dialog.c)

+#define GSM_ICON_LOGOUT system-log-out
+#define GSM_ICON_SWITCH system-users
+#define GSM_ICON_SHUTDOWN system-shutdown
+#define GSM_ICON_REBOOT view-refresh
+/* TODO: use gpm icons? */
+#define GSM_ICON_HIBERNATE drive-harddisk
+#define GSM_ICON_SLEEP sleep

This is the reason at least for: Bug #269500 and Bug #269504. You should
consider using for at least fo GSM_ICON_SWITCH, GSM_ICON_REBOOT,
GSM_ICON_HIBERNATE and GSM_ICON_SLEEP (if not for GSM_ICON_LOGOUT and
GSM_ICON_SHUTDOWN, too) names that are available in all relevant sizes
for gnome/tango/human.

[Bug 261543] Re: awful hack to avoid kernel-helper debconf clash

2008-09-26 Thread Colin Watson
There actually is a lock; the problem is waiting for it to be free
rather than just falling over. The fact that the lock is taken out deep
in the internals of debconf and the result of it failing is a message on
stderr and an exit code, not a nice exception, doesn't help.

You're probably right that waiting for the lock is the right answer
though (short of making last-good-boot not use debconf in the boot
sequence in the first place!). Thanks.

I just noticed this bug still exists on Ubuntu 8.04 with the most recent

did notice that Red Hat seems to have fixed the problem in RHEL 5
(http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2008-0019.html).

Since it seems that this is solvable when can we expect Ubuntu to have a

[Bug 242450] Re: python-twisted-core_2.5.0-2build2 error byte-compiling files

2008-09-26 Thread Graeme Humphries
Unknown, the system that was experiencing this problem now has python-
twisted-core correctly installed, so it may have been a corrupt package
file. This ticket is probably safe to close.

[Bug 273153] Re: Automount of memory sticks doesn't work; wrong defaults also

2008-09-26 Thread Paul Abrahams
Automount of memory sticks just started working for me, but I don't know
why. The last thing I did was to remove the entry for /dev/sdb1 from
/etc/fstab -- but I had tried working without that entry previously,
without success. I now can mount two sticks simultaneously and I get
the new medium detected window for both of them.

I hope that the working state doesn't disappear as inexplicably as it
appeared.

[Bug 228633] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Freezes

2008-09-26 Thread pcm_man
I have a Solo1450 Gateway laptop and I was having the exact same random
freezes on this machine with NO LOG FILES showing anything! I tried the
Powertop. I simply let to run for maybe 15 minutes and I accepted the
four solutions it suggested. My laptop to running beautifully now with
Ubuntu 8.04.1 Absolutely no hangups and lower CPU usage.

Give this solution a try!

[Bug 274902] [NEW] PULSE_SERVER not set for localapps

2008-09-26 Thread Stéphane Graber
Public bug reported:

When starting a localapp from the server that will make use of the sound
server, it can't access to pulseaudio because this one is listening only on TCP.
In order to make it work, the variable PULSE_SERVER has to be set to 127.0.0.1.

Attached is a patch to xrexecd fixing that.

[Bug 274901] [NEW] Abrupt pauses and jerky behaviour

2008-09-26 Thread CirclingTheSun
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

I'm running Firefox 3.0.3 (with no addons) on Intrepid Ibex (all updates
installed). When and Firefox simultaneously especially when scrolling
the music would stutter when running Rhythmbox and scrolling would be
very jerky and sometimes not respond for a second or two. This jerky
behaviour is especially prominent when browsing heavy sites with lots of
overhead like facebook.

None of this happens when running opera or flock beta 2 (which is based
of firefox 3).

I have a sneaky suspicion that this might either be a problem with flash
10 or perhaps with the javascript engine.

[Bug 274896] [NEW] Battery status of Logitech EX-110 cordless mouse unavailable

2008-09-26 Thread Chris Coulson
Public bug reported:

I never realised until just now that gnome-power-manager is capable of
monitoring the status of wireless mouse batteries, mainly because it
appears to have never worked with mine :(

The problem is that the battery status is not made available by the
kernel (if it is meant too be).
