[Bug 267188] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 breaks nvidia drivers

If I Install a new Installation of Intrepid, complete all of the Upgrades.
Then Enable the Restricted 177 Driver for Nvidia, upon reboot it fails to
detect screens.

Hardware: 2x Geforce 8500GT -> Correction from Previous Post

I attempted to delete xorg.conf, and tried various suggestions on the
internet and startx always returns "No Screens Found".

Re-Installing Ubuntu 8.10 Detects 1 Video Card and allows me to run dual
head. It also properly detects my LG 23" LCDs.

[Bug 132226] Re: please apply xml-optimizations to speed up the desktop

2008-10-21 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
I am running intrepid, but i am no longer running these scripts.

Although I do suspect these scripts still increase the launch speed, it's the
wrong type of solution.
Likely the XML parser should either be optimized, or these programs shouldn't
use huge XML files as a sort of a poor-man's-database. (what's wrong with
sqllite?)

So, i agree that it's better to close this bug.

not using Network Manager; just System -> Administration -> Network

[Bug 281950] Re: KDE Cannot start from kdm or gdm

2008-10-21 Thread Richard Birnie
I can also confirm this bug. Upgrade test from Hardy KDE4 remix to
intrepid. This was a VM which had only the default Hardy KDE4 package
set installed. I launched the upgrade with the command kdesudo
'adept_manager --dist-upgrade-devel'

Once the upgrade completed I restarted and tried to log in. I observed
the same symptoms reported by Celeste. The cause seems to be that no
Session type is selected by default. The work around is to click the
'Session type' menu at the bottom of the log in screen and choose KDE.
Choosing Default (previous) does not work. If KDE is chosen the system
logs in as normal.

[Bug 287374] [NEW] [Intrepid] Suspend fails when telling pm-utils to use uswsusp

2008-10-21 Thread hyperair
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

After setting SLEEP_MODULE in /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module to
"uswsusp", suspend becomes impossible. This is a regression, because in
Hardy, suspend was possible even when uswsusp was chosen as the suspend
method.

The reason for this bug is that the uswsusp code in pm-utils tries to
use s2ram to suspend, which does not exist, because its build was
disabled (see Bug #134238). In previous versions, pm-utils fell back
onto the kernel method when it could not find s2ram. This bug appeared
in Bug #267141 when pm-utils auto-detected uswsusp and used it instead
of the kernel method. The resolution for Bug #267141 in a patch provided
by James Westby was to remove the auto-detection code completely, but
that does not fix the issue I have highlighted.

And finally, there are two possible fixes (which I can see) for this:
1. Patch /usr/lib/pm-utils/module.d/uswsusp to fall back on kernel for
check_suspend and do_suspend (The attached patch will do just that)
2. Re-enable the s2ram build in uswsusp

** Affects: pm-utils (Ubuntu)

[Bug 266925] Re: Change "remove" to "stop uploading"

2008-10-21 Thread charles
"stop uploading" doesn't make sense in the context of a torrent that's
only downloading, or is idle.

IMO the current two menu options -- "Remove" and "Delete Files and
Remove" -- make it pretty clear that the former doesn't delete the
files.

Bumping this to the clearlooks people for a second opinion.
Transmission's just using standard GTK+ widgets here, so I don't think
it's a Transmission issue.

there's nothing unusual I can see in the code.

[Bug 259214] Re: wired connection settings are lost after reboot

2008-10-21 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Also changing there the dns-nameservers there but it didn't do anything.

I restarted the Network-Manager service and still it shows dhcp
connectivity .

Running into some other bugs, it seems dhcp is default for now, is this
how its going to be for times to come?

[Bug 259214] Re: wired connection settings are lost after reboot

2008-10-21 Thread Shirish Agarwal
Hi Alex,
so this would be right.

/etc/network/interfaces

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auth eth1
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.1.3
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns-nameserver 192.168.1.1

Then tried this :-

 sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
 * Reconfiguring network interfaces...
 RTNETLINK answers: No such process
SIOCDELRT: No such process
WARNING: ifup -a is disabled in favour of NetworkManager.
   Set ifupdown:managed=false in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf.

So this is right at the least saying that my connection is being managed
by Network-Manager

Then did this :-

sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart
 * Stopping NetworkManager...
  [ OK ]
 * Starting NetworkManager...
  [ OK ]

Network Manager also did not complain so looks good.

But when I right click on nm-applet and click on edit connection (nm-
connections-editor)

for eth1 it still shows me the connection as a dhcp connection and both
connect automatically and system settings are checked.

(Stumped here)

Another thing why is the dns-nameserver taken as 192.168.1.1 . From what
I understand of dns-nameserver they are usually something at the ISP's
end. For e.g. my ISP's dns name-servers are 61.1.96.69 , 61.1.96.71 or
sometimes use OpenDNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 . This
information should be there, shouldn't it.

[Bug 284601] Re: orage clock stop refreshing

2008-10-21 Thread Juha Kautto
I can not reproduce this.

Next time if you see it, try to run strace and get a bt from gdb:
$ ps -ef | grep orageclock
get pid and:
$ strace -p
get few rounds and end (control-c) or wait 10 mins if nothing seems to be
happening.
If it indeed is hanging, you may not get anything at all.
$gdb orageclock
(gdb) bt
(gdb) quit

Not much more I can do for this.

[Bug 287367] [NEW] Envyng crashes on download of driver

2008-10-21 Thread T0nnan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: envyng-core

The installation of Nvidia-drivers crashes with the following message:

Downloading the packages...
[===57.1%=]
results could not be parsed
Error in function pulse
Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/Envy/packagemanager.py", line 75, in

   numHashes = int(round(numHashes))
TypeError: an integer is required
/usr/bin/envyng: line 4: 23002 Segementionfault
(core dumped) sudo python interface.py

Honestly, I'm not much of a programmer, so I'm not entirely sure if this is a
bug or if it's a problem caused by me. But this is a fresh install of Intrepid
X64, and it wasn't able to detect my 8800gts by default, so I had to download
and install Envy in command line.
Hope you guys can solve this.

I have the newest version of all needed packages, including envyng-core,
envyng-gtk and all needed python-packages. I have tried to install
envyng through the multiverse-sources of both hardy and intrepid.

I'm sorry, but that's not correct, this is not just a hotkey problem.
The Gnome brightness app doesn't work either, as I've stated.

Regardless, I'll still provide the requested information. Using method
1, the key on my laptop to increase the brightness is reported as
XF86Forward. The key to reduce the brightness reports as XF86Stop.

The identifier information for my laptop is:

[Bug 262799] Re: openoffice fails to start

2008-10-21 Thread Patrick Horgan
Your suggestion does not help. I've uninstalled openoffice, did
updatedb, removed everything with openoffice in the name or path. Then
I do apt-get install openoffice.org. The problem is identical. It seg
faults as I reported. Apport does not report it although it did pick up
that on removal unopkg.bin crashed and reported it. /etc/default/apport
has enabled=1. Nevertheless, the seg fault in openoffice does not
result in a report from apport, nor anything in /var/crash. To say that
I shouldn't have my bug fixed because apport won't report it is cruel.
If you don't like my stack backtrace tell me what you want.

Here's a current stack backtrace from after the reinstallation:

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot (dual-core Atom 330 board D945GCLF2)

2008-10-21 Thread Robert Nelson
Okay, this really doesn't make sense. (config-2.6.27-7.12 has it
disabled) not what i was hoping for, doesn't really make sense. git
bisect results (Atom 330 D945GCLF2, x86_64), this more then likely will
not get reverted. (since it can damage hardware) But will have to be
modified to work with this cpu.

Any Ideas?

Robert

commit 67d9b90a1c844bf1c6daaffd2c60561fc8c445f7

disable CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE due to possible memory corruption on module
unload

While debugging the e1000e corruption bug with Intel, we discovered
today that the dynamic ftrace code in mainline is the likely source of
this bug.

For the stable kernel we are providing the only viable fix patch: labeling
CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE as broken. (see the patch below)

We will follow up with a backport patch that contains the fixes. But since
the fixes are not a one liner, the safest approach for now is to
disable the code in question.

The cause of the bug is due to the way the current code in mainline
handles dynamic ftrace. When dynamic ftrace is turned on, it also
turns on CONFIG_FTRACE which enables the -pg config in gcc that places
a call to mcount at every function call. With just CONFIG_FTRACE this
causes a noticeable overhead. CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE works to ease this
overhead by dynamically updating the mcount call sites into nops.

The problem arises when we trace functions and modules are unloaded.
The first time a function is called, it will call mcount and the mcount
call will call ftrace_record_ip. This records the calling site and
stores it in a preallocated hash table. Later on a daemon will
wake up and call kstop_machine and convert any mcount callers into
nops.

The evolution of this code first tried to do this without the kstop_machine
and used cmpxchg to update the callers as they were called. But I
was informed that this is dangerous to do on SMP machines if another
CPU is running that same code. The solution was to do this with
kstop_machine.

We still used cmpxchg to test if the code that we are modifying is
indeed code that we expect to be before updating it - as a final
line of defense.

But on 32bit machines, ioremapped memory and modules share the same
address space. When a module would load its code into memory and execute
some code, that would register the function.

On module unload, ftrace incorrectly did not zap these functions from
its hash (this was the bug). The cmpxchg could have saved us in most
cases (via luck) - but with ioremap-ed memory that was exactly the wrong
thing to do - the results of cmpxchg on device memory are undefined.
(and will likely result in a write)

The pending .28 ftrace tree does not have this bug anymore, as a general
push
towards more robustness of code patching, this is done differently: we do
not
use cmpxchg and we do a WARN_ON and turn the tracer off if anything deviates
from its expected state. Furthermore, patch sites are statically identified
during build time so there's no runtime discovery of dynamic code areas
anymore, and no room for code unmaps to cause the hash to become out of
date.

We believe the fragility of dynamic patching has been sufficiently
addressed in the development code via the static patching method, but
further
suggestions to make it more robust are welcome.

[Bug 281720] Re: Lack of terminals in ubuntu 8.10

2008-10-21 Thread Taupter
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 129910 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910

No, it's not.
In bug 129910, Loye Young wrote on 2008-01-10 that that bug is about Gutsy and
Gutsy only, Saïvann Carignan wrote on 2008-04-03: Fix released, This bug is
fixed and similar issues should be posted as different bugs.

129910 was for 7.10, not for 8.10, and even then, the 7.10 fix wasn't
applied to that distro's version afaict. And even if it was somebody
should have the decency to reopen bug 129910, as saying this bug is a
duplicate of the other "closed" bug that affected an yesteryear distro
doesn't do much to fix the problem that's happening _now_. But it seems
this "class" of problem is appearing recurrently. Maybe some Ubuntu devs
devised that getting framebuffer consoles should be a good "rite of
passage", based on the constant ressurgence of this "feature that needs
a hack to work like everyone else's distro". Dev's response to bug
129910 was so bad (lack of priority, bug being marked as invalid)

2007-08-02 - Miguel Martinez reported the bug.
2007-09-09 - John Yates explains how to fix this bug. Various people confirm
Yate's fix works.
2007-12-07 - Henrik Nilsen Omma said it wouldn't be fixed until 8.04.
2007-12-13 - Leann Ogasawara marked the bug as invalid.
2007-12-13 - Jonas Bygdén asked why they ignored us for so much time just to
close the bug with such inane excuse,
2007-12-13 - Felix Miata said that everybody else's distro under the sun
doesn't have this problem.
2007-12-13 - Miguel Martinez tried to convince us that bug was in fact a
feature.
2008-01-10 - Loye Young said that this bug is about Gutsy and Gutsy only.
2008-01-11 - Andrea Corbellini said it was not critical.
2008-02-25 - Ben Collins closed the bug because "the report is so convoluted",
infuriating some.
2008-03-11 - Colin Watson said the reason we don't use vesafb by default is
that it breaks suspend/resume.
2008-03-11 - Launchpad Janitor informed This bug was fixed in the package
initramfs-tools - 0.85eubuntu29 - after SEVEN MONTHS and nine days.
2008-03-12 - Launchpad Janitor adds another fix.
2008-03-17 - Felix Miata says the problem returns. Argh.
2008-04-03 - Saïvann Carignan said fix released, This bug is fixed and similar
issues should be posted as different bugs.

So, please put 129910 to rest. There's an enormous DNR stick on it.
281720 is not a duplicate. And pretty please someone fix 281720 before
Intrepid is released. And don't let the this bug lag as 129910 did,
thank you very much.

[Bug 282203] Re: Wacom tablet hotplug is no longer enabled by default

2008-10-21 Thread Alexia Death
I can see the one weakness of hal based hotplug why it does not work for
tabletPC-s. There is no hotplug event. If I have my tablet connected at
X start I need to replug it and that is not possible for tabletPC-s.

IMHO the only sane solution to allow for full functionality in the
future is to make full use of the X dbus config interface and run a
helper script to load user setup for the wacom both at log-in, checking
for the presence of the device, and when HAL does a device add for the
stylus, that then this helper will remove, and add devices as user wants
them. The HAL setup alone ensures sufficient functionality for GDM and
unconfigured user cases and everybody is happy.

[Bug 278992] Re: Mobile Broadband does not connect Sierra Wireless in Switzerland

2008-10-21 Thread Jerone Young
I think your issue with the same one I was having with the sierra 881. I
think my fix to network manager will help you also. Trying to get
Alexander to look at it and hopefully it can go into intrepid.

Also what does /var/log/daemon.log show after it fails. It should say
failed setting APN. The problem is someone threw in spaces into the APN
setting line. Notice the wvdial line for this has no spaces!

Here is the fix for network manager:
