[Bug 289014] [NEW] ath5k driver missing after latest intrepid update

2008-10-24 Thread Walter_Wittel
Public bug reported:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/276508
(so maybe dupe) but this summary is more specific to the problem (276508
is older bug). Also this should attach files.

After upgrading intrepid this evening I lost wireless, and it turns out
the ath5k directory/driver is missing ( 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct
24 06:42:44 UTC 2008 i686). The driver was there and had been working up
until tonight. Perhaps this is a packaging problem rather than a kernel
problem. Please reassign if appropriate.

I tried a reinstall from Synaptic but that didn't help.

[Bug 246269] Re: Switched from vesafb to uvesafb, but uvesafb can't work without v86d

2008-10-24 Thread pietjepuk
According to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/246269/comments/71 a fix
was released.
1. I am however not sure, if it is fixed for 8.10 final only? RC of Kubuntu
Live CD (kubuntu-8.10-rc-desktop-i386.iso) shows still shows the bug. The boot
stalls for half a minute, but then continues. On completion of boot I observe
no further effects.
2. You can't use any workaround if you use a live cd, and I am not sure whether
you want to accept this behavior to remain on every live session you do.

[Bug 276508] Re: [intrepid] [Atheros AR5211] ath5k driver inoperative, wpa_supplicant never completes connection

2008-10-24 Thread Walter_Wittel
I hit exactly the same thing this evening after upgrading (
2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 24 06:42:44 UTC 2008 i686 in my case).
The driver was there and had been working up until tonight.

I tried a reinstall from Synaptic but that didn't help.

I am able to hit esc during boot and switch back to 2.6.27.7-generic which
still has the driver (notice ath9k for both kernels):

[Bug 288991] Re: X server display error during Intrepid 8.10 RC installation

2008-10-24 Thread Chris Hollenbeck
I completed another successful install with the Wacom tablet unplugged
and without touching anything to verify that the screen blanking was not
involved. I then shut it down after logging into the new system and
verifying there were no errors and shut it down. I plugged the Wacom
tablet back in and started another install from the CD menu. It copied
files and then at some point after that (reconfiguring hardware,
perhaps?), the X error window appeared. It looks like it is thus a
problem with the tablet during the installation rather than the video
card.

[Bug 289008] [NEW] Please sync dansguardian 2.9.9.4-1+lenny1 (universe) from Debian main (lenny)

2008-10-24 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dansguardian

Please sync dansguardian 2.9.9.4-1+lenny1 (universe) from Debian main
(lenny)

Rationale:
Closes grave Debian bug #493047 (Dansguardian fails with
'basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid" on start)
No other significant changes to the package
Builds / Installs cleanly in intrepid

Additional Debian changelog:

dansguardian (2.9.9.4-1+lenny1) testing-proposed-updates; urgency=low

  [ Thomas Viehmann ]
  * OptionContainer.cpp: If you need to iterate through all lines in the
config file to find a field, at least don't abuse the configfile deque
by accessing it as if it was an array with signed index.
Works way better on arm, too, i.e. closes: #493047.

[Bug 288397] Re: The old plugin hangs firefox 3

2008-10-24 Thread James Stansell
Hi Elias,

Your suggestion is fine with me personally, but there are still a lot of
people who want to use sun-java6-plugin with Firefox 2, which can't use
the new plugin2 from 6u10.

Is there a bug open in Sun's bug parade for the regression of the
classic plugin?

[Bug 249568] Re: Backlight isn't turned off after inactivity on iBook G4

2008-10-24 Thread lopthopman
I've had this problem too, but it has been solved. Perhaps you have the
same problem I did.

Is your screensaver on? If it is, TURN IT OFF. Even if you select
"blank screen", it turns on the backlight. So, give this a try:

1. turn OFF the screensaver
2. on Powermanagement, set "put display to sleep when inactive" to the desired
time

Please update this bug if this works for you

[Bug 289000] [NEW] serious networking problems (lags, stalls) with dell inspiron 640m

serious networking problems (lags, stalls) with dell inspiron 640m

I just upgraded an inspiron 640m with intel wireless and broadcom
ethernet from hardy to *intrepid rc1* today and ran into a lot of
continuing network lag and stalls.

Here is the networking hardware:
0c:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
[Golan] Network Connection [8086:4222] (rev 02)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX
[14e4:170c] (rev 02)

After upgrade completes, I get serious intermittent lag before the
system transfers any serious amount of data on both wireless and wired
connections. Sometimes pages load in a snap, other times I get 60
seconds of wait time before the page loads. These are pages like the
new york times and launchpad that loaded like lightning 24/7 in hardy
(half an hour ago).

Ping works almost immediately. SSH worked, but very slowly. Some
webpages half load instantly, then stall. Others never load. The wifi
light on the laptop blinks steadily on and off.

I found this thread as it mentions my model machine and wireless
driver--->  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/263059
Of course my machine booted, so probably not the same issue. Did notice
another dude in the thread having wireless throughput issues though on
my exact machine.

I noticed the folks in that thread all saw their problem with the
wireless driver ceased after FTRACE was disabled in 2.6.27-7.12. My
kernel on install of intrepid was 2.6.27-7.11, so I manually downloaded
the 2.6.27-7.14 build and installed, rebooted.

Still roughly the same symptoms. Small transfers happen ok. Larger
bits of data may take a dozen seconds to start. They run a full speed
for a while, then stall.

*) same problem with multiple browsers... konqueror and firefox both stalling
right now out loading the NYTimes. Slashdot came up instantly a second ago,
now amazon is churning for 15 seconds. Now 45 seconds
*) I'm sitting right next to the router with 99% signal strength
*) Also happens when ethernet is plugged in, can't tell if it's worse or better.
*) Mac mini running Debian sid sitting on the desk right here is loading
everything instantly on the same internet connection. So very unlikely to be a
problem with my link.

What files should I include? Thanks!

[Bug 288182] Re: browser goes irresponsive easily and frequently

2008-10-24 Thread agnimon
Hi.
Thanks for your help. I think I've figured out. Disabling MediaWrap can solve
the problem, and when visiting pages mentioned with MediaWrap enabled, Firefox
will call mplayer, which leads to seemingly irresponsive (maybe respond but
take a rather long time). But I can't sure whether it's mplayer or MediaWrap
that caused irresponsive.

[Bug 108577] Re: pulseaudio esd wrapper is not working with gnome

2008-10-24 Thread arcadepro
Small update.

- Removed all config files from home directories.
- Re-installed esdcompat from the Hardy repository.
- Added: 'load-module module-esound-protocol-unix socket=/tmp/.esd-1000/socket'
 to default.pa

This stopped the errors from the gnome applet and the 'Failed to open module
"module-protocol-esound-unix"' errors.
Why this did not work before I am not sure. Residual conflicting config files
perhaps.
(There is an inconsistency there by the way. The module name you need to invoke
is different to the filename. This causes some confusion)

Sound was still silent from EsounD sources at this point but errors had ceased
and the pulseaudio daemon was now running.
(pulseaudio -v)

However, on running 'pactl list' I discovered that EsounD is mapped to
the following.

*** Sample #1 ***
Name: esound.gnome-2/logout
Volume: 0: 100% 1: 100%
Sample Specification: s16le 2ch 44100Hz
Channel Map: front-left,front-right<---
Duration: 1.8s
Size: 310.1 KiB
Lazy: no
Filename: n/a

I opened 'alsamixer' and set PCM Front to 100, it was currently on 0.
Device is an Audigy 2 Pro (w/box) using the standard driver from a clean Hardy
install.

Sound returned at this point.

Incidentally this also cured missing sounds in Adobe Flash Player.
(AMD64 using nspluginwrapper in Firefox 64).

'No sound in flash ubuntu' has an insane number of hits on google. I'm
not saying this is THE fix but if someone has exhausted all other
avenues then simply increasing PCM Front seems worth a shot if the
pulseaudio daemon is booting without error.

How very strange. It seems you're experiencing a mild kernel panic each

1. added MODULES="ath_hal" to /etc/defaults/acpi-support (not sure if this is
significant)
2. added STOP_SERVICES="networking" to /etc/defaults/acpi-support

3. added "ifconfig wifi0 up" to /usr/lib/pm-

case "$1" in
hibernate|suspend)
suspend_nm

thaw|resume)
ifconfig wifi0 up <-

hope this helps

[Bug 288994] [NEW] Synaptic Incorrectly Lists Abiword as "Auto Removable"

2008-10-24 Thread Ben Aultowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: abiword

For most of Intrepid's development, Synaptic has listed Abiword and many
of its dependencies as "auto removable". I assumed that this was a
careless packaging mistake and would be cleared up before the release,
but now the Release Candidate is out and the problem remains.

[Bug 288995] [NEW] [intrepid] graphire bluetooth works until pressure reaches "64"

2008-10-24 Thread tommy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wacom-tools

Ubuntu 8.10 RC (updated) AMD64
wacom-tools 1:0.8.1.4-0ubuntu3

Using the same modified hidp kernel module as I used successfully in
hardy, I have my graphire bluetooth sending the correct data (as
indicated by xidump), and working correctly until the pen pressure
exceeds "+00063". The maximum value is correctly reported by xidump as
+00511.

When the pressure value exceeds 63, input from the tablet locks up until
the pen is moved out of range of the tablet. When moved back in range it
works as before. Other input sources are not affected.

I don't really know where to begin tracking down the cause of this :/.

When I run wacdump outside of X, the pressure value is reported up until
the maximum value of 511, so the tablet and the modified hidp module
seem to be working.

I tried editing my xorg.conf as indicated in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WacomTroubleshooting and removing the
10-wacom.fdi file from /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty. The
result was similar, except when pressure exceeded 63 the cursor became
enormously sensitive to movement, and completely lost pressure
sensitivity (until the pen was moved out of range, as before).

[Bug 281956] Re: evolution uses wrong date to switch to daylight saving timezone in timezone Europe/Brussels

2008-10-24 Thread jolay
I confirm this bug in evolution 2.22.3.1 on Hardy (KDE 3.5.10 or KDE 4),
with timezone Europe/Paris.

$ zdump -v Europe/Paris | grep 2008
Europe/Paris Sun Mar 30 00:59:59 2008 UTC = Sun Mar 30 01:59:59 2008 CET
isdst=0 gmtoff=3600
Europe/Paris Sun Mar 30 01:00:00 2008 UTC = Sun Mar 30 03:00:00 2008 CEST
isdst=1 gmtoff=7200
Europe/Paris Sun Oct 26 00:59:59 2008 UTC = Sun Oct 26 02:59:59 2008 CEST
isdst=1 gmtoff=7200
Europe/Paris Sun Oct 26 01:00:00 2008 UTC = Sun Oct 26 02:00:00 2008 CET
isdst=0 gmtoff=3600

See attached screenshot. Evolution timeline seems to switch to DST at
the beginning of week (Monday Oct.20) instead of next sunday (Oct.26).
Events in red on the screenshot are script-generated from an external
timetable. They are correctly aligned with the corresponding manually
edited events except this week.

Periodic appointements (in November and later) are displayed one hour
earlier.

[Bug 285323] Re: Losing keyboard and mouse control when changing screen brightness with fn + arrow under intrepid

2008-10-24 Thread Bryan Quigley
I went through and tested:

2.23.1-0ubuntu1 is the last one that worked
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/2.23.1-0ubuntu1)

And 2.23.6-0ubuntu1 introduced this bug.

[Bug 287147] Re: knetworkmanager only sees usb gsm modem if it's plugged in before boot

2008-10-24 Thread Cristian Arezzini
I found a way to have KNetworkManager dynamically recognize my USB modem:
I edited the file
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi' or su -c 'kwrite
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi
and added this section:

[code]

  modem
  IS-707-A

[/code]

Now KNetworkManager correctly detects the modem when it's plugged in, at
any time, and displays it as ttyACM0. But if I click on the connection
under it in the KNetworkManager menu, NetworkManager crashes. A dmesg
gives this message:

[ 342.801146] NetworkManager[6375]: segfault at 10 ip 0807ea98 sp bfbaf990
error 4 in NetworkManager[8048000+5e000]

Any idea why it crashes so badly?

[Bug 288990] Re: Patch to add PNG support to correct segfault in smc

2008-10-24 Thread Michael Casadevall
** Description changed:

This patch adds freeimage plugins to cegui-mk2 (the build system
autodetects dependencies, hence no configure flags). Adding freeimage
support allows cegui to decode PNG files, required for smc. Without this
change, smc simply segfaults on launch.
+
+ It also appears Hardy is affected by this bug (same package versions),
+ but I don't have a Hardy box with the necessary GL hardware to test.
