[Bug 293352] [NEW] Pidgin freezes on launch with no status icon or window

2008-11-03 Thread Vik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Running pidgin under Kubuntu 8.04 upgraded to latest release as of 1st
November causes pidgin to silently lock up. If run from the command
line, no errors are displayed. No window is shown, and no icon is
displayed in the system tray, though a space is made for it. Terminating
with ^C causes the space in the system tray to go away.

I have removed the .gaim directory.

If I remove the .purple directory, I can run pidgin again. This is not
an idea solution, as all my account details are then obviously lost.

I'm running

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04
Linux kereru 2.6.24-21-generic #1 SMP Tue Oct 21 23:43:45 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2.1

on a 2.0GHz Turion with 1600MiB free according to htop. No swap used,
ample disk space.

Output of "pidgin -d" is attached.

[Bug 282316] Re: erratic elapsed time count in "sound recorder"

2008-11-03 Thread jdeslip
The update in intrepid-proposed fixes the timing issue on sound-
recorder, but I still have extremeley low recording volume. Have you
seen Bug 261018 and Bug 282931 Daniel? They should perhaps be
reassigned to alsa-plugins. It seems that with pulseaudio enabled,
sound recording is at extremely low volume (even with the new libasound2
package).

[Bug 292302] Re: Raidset stays inactive due to wrong # of devices

2008-11-03 Thread Phillip Susi
I have looked at the patch and the problem appears to be the changes it
makes to name(). Originally name() is passed the isw_dev it should
operate on, which corresponds to the raid volume. The patch changes it
to be passed the raid_dev and then it finds the isw_dev itself from the
raid dev, only it always uses the first one. If you have more than one
raid volume then they all get assigned the same name, which leads to a
single volume looking like it contains 4 disks.

I think name() just needs fixed to take the isw_dev parameter again
instead of looking up the first entry itself. I will try to fix this
tomorrow and upload it to my PPA for testing.

2008-11-03 Thread David Marsh
Does anyone have a fix for this? I'm trying to upgrade server 8.04 to

This server never connects to the internet (corporate lan), and all the
upgrades have been through ISO images. I've done this successfully for
the previous 2 releases or so.

[Bug 257523] Re: intrepid - rhythmbox just stops playing

2008-11-03 Thread Ian Ellis
I've had Amarok and Rhythmbox running from the console when the
'scratch' problem I mentioned occurred, and they didn't output anything,
but I think the right people are already aware of this issue from what
I've read during my searches concerning this problem. Something related
to buffering.

In regards to the lock-ups, I tried switching everything over to alsa,
both in sound preferences and in Amarok, and it didn't help. Then I
tried doing the pusleaudio fixes described in this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=866965, but Amarok still locked
up. I'm listening to music in Rhythmbox right now to see if it will
lock up. This is getting pretty bad, because a couple times my laptop
has even hard locked. I haven't tried listening to any music on my
desktop to see if it also has the problem. I suppose that I should also
mention that I'm running Ubuntu amd64, not Kubuntu.

[Bug 293348] [NEW] ubuntu x86 freezes randomly

2008-11-03 Thread Andor Nagy
Public bug reported:

I have installed 8.10, however before this, I tried 8.04 as well.
My problem is the version x86 freezes after some usage independently from the
usage with low or high performance and the previous and the latest ubuntu
version.

Hardware:
Asus T3-P5G965 Barebone
E6400 processor
4x1GB Corsair XMS2 Twin2x memory module
Asus x1300 video card
Western Digital Raptor 74GB

If I use only 2GB in any variation, I cannot reproduce freezing. Memtest86+
shows nothing error.
If I use 4GB in any variation, the symptoms is present.

My aim is with this issue, that please tell me what to do in ubuntu to
find the source of the error. I hope there are some tricky methods to
help me to catch the cause of the error which is very frustrating.

Thank you for your skills!

Best regards,
Andor Nagy

[Bug 293312] [NEW] [Intrepid][Regression] Rt61pci wireless stopped working between Beta and Final Live CDs

2008-11-03 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Public bug reported:

This was working perfectly on Intrepid Beta and has regressed to not working
when I try the Intrepid Final Live CD.
Network-manager cannot connect to my access point, even when I disable all
security (both MAC filtering and encryption - it is now completely open). I
have no issues connecting with an IPW2200. When I put in the WPA2 AP
passphrase, the icon spins for a while and then fails.
Can anybody help me figure out where the issue is?
The driver is "rt61pci".

My lspci.txt [1.16 KiB] can be found in my earlier bug report (about Hardy) to
the forums:

[Bug 293313] [NEW] CLI install pulls in xauth (and other X11 deps)

2008-11-03 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I am installing Intrepid with an "F6 - Other options" command line of

file=/cdrom/preseed/cli.seed priority=low initrd=/install/initrd.gz
quiet --

to install only the ubuntu-standard base system.

After the install is finished, the resulting system includes the
following packages:

libx11-6
libx11-data
libxau6
libxcb-xlib0
libxcb1
libxdmcp6
libxext6
libxmuu1
x11-common
xauth

I believe it is inappropriate for a CLI-only system install to pull in
any X11 packages. (The only exception is xkb-data, which is needed by
console-setup.) Indeed, all the above can be purged after the fact
without any fuss.

As far as I can tell, what happened here is that openssh-client has
"Recommends: xauth", and apt is configured to install recommended
packages when a metapackage is requested. So ubuntu-standard is
installed, which requires openssh-client, which recommends xauth, which
depends on all these various X libraries.

I don't know what the best solution to this may be---only that
x11-common and friends should not be present on a freshly-installed CLI
system.

(Side note: Is it sensible for openssh-client to recommend/suggest xauth
in the first place? As I understand it, that command is used on the
remote end when you are ssh-ing out. Indeed, openssh-server recommends
xauth, and there it makes sense.)

[Bug 293343] [NEW] [Intrepid] Bad naming when creating "Empty files"

2008-11-03 Thread Magnus S
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I guess the easiest way to describe this is to let you see it for
yourself.

Steps to reproduce:

1. On your desktop, right-click > Create Document >Empty File. You now have a
file called "new file".
2. Repeat. You now have a file called "new file (copy)". That is bad naming,
since this file is not a copy of "new file".
3. Repeat again. This file will be called "new file (another copy)". Also bad
naming, since this file is not a copy of "new file" nor "new file (copy)", they
are all separate and indepentent files.

Instead the files should be named "new file", "new file 1", "new file 2"
and so on.

[Bug 288652] Re: intrepid: after sleeping sound not working even cause apps to hang

2008-11-03 Thread Patrick Wagstrom
I'm experiencing the same thing, but it does not appear to be related to
alsa pcm volume. Rather it appears that pulseaudio just hangs after
coming out of sleep. This is a regression from what happened on Hardy,
where pulseaudio would continue to work after coming out of sleep.
Killing and restarting pulseaudio seems to fix the problem.

For reference, here's my sound information:

OK, done. Not sure if it will help a kernel problem? Do you need some sort of

It hangs a second or so after "LCP terminated by peer".
Does NM load any modules into the kernel? (that are not used by pon/pppd)
Why would the machine crash from NM while pon works? Different options to pppd?

no SATA drives are installed. This same CD installed no problem on
several other computers with the exception of this one. ASUS MOBO is an
A8N-VM with an nForce410/geForce6100. I think the problem is the AOpen
DVD-RW drive, because Fedora 8 and Fedora 9 install and live CD's did
the same thing as Ubuntu 8.10. Windows XP and Windows Vista have no
problem with the DVD-RW drive. So I temporarily swapped the drive with
a different drive and Ubuntu installed no problem, but when I
reconnected the drive Ubuntu failed to recognize the drive or read
anything in the drive from a blank CD to a Music/Audio CD to a MP3 CD to
a Movie DVD. So I checked the /dev and /media directories and not any
entries mentioned CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CDROM, DVDROM, CDRW, DVDRW.

Re: [Bug 261721] Re: X never sees brightness key release events

2008-11-03 Thread Mario Limonciello
I think that you need to look a little closer at what's actually
happening for these "Release" events possibly. Try starting a Failsafe
Terminal at your login screen. If you run xev over there, you'll see
that a KeyRelease event is somehow generated, however it is *followed*
by the KeyPress event. The two being out of order may be confusing
gnome's keyboard handler and gnome power manager.

UPDATE: Duplicate of bug #58416?

** Description changed:

When downloading new updates, the ability to scroll through downloaded
packages does not work. The scroll bar is locked to bottom package. I
do not know if this is a gtk error as the list is being re-drawn or if
synaptic itself can fix, but the entire reason for such a scrollbar is
mute at that point. More closely it occurs with synaptic-package-

[Bug 293314] Re: No partitions in the install Prepare partitions dialogue when AHCI is disabled

2008-11-03 Thread Marcel
Update: I found a workaround for this bug!

Because my disk has already ext3 and linux-swap partitions, the Live-CD

By unmounting (if any) ext2 and/or ext3 partitions, and right-click
"Swap Off" on the linux-swap in GParted. The installer now find and
display all partitions!

Hi,

You have a Virtual option set in your xorg.conf, and that is preventing
it from using the larger resolutions.

Has the tool ever offered to change this so that you could use dual

your session)?

Thanks,

I can confirm that KDE3 and Wine applications do not show fonts after
installing nVidia 96 drivers. 3D acceleration and desktop effects work
fine though. My Wine applications and digiKam (KDE3 application) do not

In the attached screenshot, I show three windows:
1. Notice the menus in the Notepad - the fonts are not there!
2. Notice that the tags in digiKam are not present.

prevented the cursor from moving around. However, I still have the
problem with the directional pads not working in any emulators or MAME.
Everything works great in jscalibrator and I even set new calibrations.
But EVERY game that I try to use my joysticks, the directional pads are
not registering. The buttons work perfectly. I have no idea what's
causing this. I even recompiled various emulators in intrepid to see if
it was a specific emulator problem but it's not. It's only the
directional pads that are not working even though they work in
jscalibrator and jstest. Do you have any suggestions? Should I open a
new bug report? Thanks!

[Bug 291158] Re: Boot error INT 6: CR2 00000000 !!!!!!

2008-11-03 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi katon,

First care to confirm if this is still an issue with the final Intrepid
release? Also, can you also comment if you are using the -server kernel
or the -generic one and also for which arch? Thanks.

Hi Jo,

Can you attach your full dmesg output which captures these boot up
messages as well? I'd like to see what additional information may get
logged.

[Bug 290704] Re: [Intrepid] Computer freeze when switching user

2008-11-03 Thread Robert Bernecky
Hmm. I am having same bug, and also some confusion:

1. I am running fglrx on Intrepid release 8.10 on an amd64 SMP box.

2. Switching to "guest" or "guest session" produces the black screen and system
hang/crash
described by Harm Jans.

3. I do not see how to switch users any more - shouldn't there be a "switch
users"
line down around the restart/shutdown/hiberate/suspend/logout" lines?

4. I am not running compiz, but am running dual-head monitors.

5. The failure is 100% reproducible.

[Bug 293332] [NEW] gnome-subtitles shouldn't depend on gtk-sharp2

2008-11-03 Thread trespasserw
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-subtitles

... because latter is a metapackage which includes not only runtime libs but
also examples and documetation. So, at the moment installation of
gnome-subtitles brings the whole bunch of Mono documentation. This slows down a
process (building monodoc indices takes quite a while) and craps the system
with unneeded stuff.
I feel it should depend on "real" packages (like libgtk2.0-cil) instead.

Versions: Ubuntu 8.10, gnome-subtitles-0.7.2-1ubuntu1

Have you tested these changes? Please note that the dmraid initramfs
script is only present as a catch all, in case udev doesn't correctly
identify a dmraid array, which is the case for a few dmraid compatible
configurations.
