Re: [Bug 293160] Re: sudo wont give up asking for you password even after several worng attempts or if you are not a sudoer

2008-11-03 Thread PresuntoRJ
Yes, it only happened after the upgrade from 804 to 810, and yes, I
had to reboot (changed kernels)

I am now waiting for my laptop to complete the upgrade to verify if
this happens there as well (gimme an hour or so)

I have checked that in my /etc/syslog.conf I have: auth, authpriv.*
/var/log/auth.log

But this only logs the successes and fails to authenticate (even sudo)
but it does not gimme any clues on what sudo could be doing wrong

Is there anywhere to look for it (besides the sudo src)?

Is the sudo package atomic (stands by it self when executed once
compiled) or it comes molular with many dependencies (besides libc6 >=
2.7-1, libpam-modules and libpam0g (>= 0.99.7.1)?

Is the only version availabe at ../ubuntu intrepid main restricted? Is
there some other at other intrepid repository which could be causing
this issue?

[Bug 293310] [NEW] goes to foreground at reload but is not focussed

2008-11-03 Thread Georg Neis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I have the following situation. Evince is displaying a PDF file but the
window is in the background. I generate a new version of the PDF in the
foreground. When the file changes, evince automatically reloads and its
window appears in the foreground. That's good because at this point I
want to check how my changes look like anyway. But what is annoying is
that the evince window is not focussed.

This is on Ubuntu 8.10, with evince 2.24.1-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 290875] Re: No more UI to decide whether receiving file via bluetooth is permitted or not in Intrepid

2008-11-03 Thread Daniel James
I can't agree more. I was very happy to recommend ubuntu for laptops as
stuff just worked. Now it seems that laptops are getting less and less
support under ubuntu. Bluetooth needs to be supported out of the box, a
universe package is not intuitive at all. The only way to find out what
you are supposed to do to enable bluetooth file reception is to get on
bugzilla. This would not work in my parent's case.

[Bug 291675] Re: Ubuntu Desktop 8.1.0 does't load - hangs with black screen

2008-11-03 Thread Borden Rhodes
Ah, it turns out the reason why that workaround fails is because the
i810 driver's been discontinued. I can get K/Ubuntu to boot with the
Vesa driver (id est, insert

Driver "vesa"

into the Section "Device" part of the xorg.conf file)

Therefore, this is almost certainly a regression in the xserver-xorg-
video-intel driver. At least, my problem is.

[Bug 293307] [NEW] knetworkmanager gives wrong parameter to vpnc

2008-11-03 Thread Alwin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-kde

Hi,

I'd setup a cisco vpn connection via knetworkmanager applett. Parameters
were ok, but didn't connect. I tested the config with commandline vpnc -
worked fine.

After a while I found in syslog:

Nov 3 22:56:40 toni-laptop NetworkManager: Starting VPN service

resolv.conf to /sbin/resolvconf
Nov 3 22:56:41 toni-laptop NetworkManager: Policy set 'alwin' (wlan2)
as default for routing and DNS.

eg., knetworkmanager or whatever gives "Disable NAT Traversal" which
seems not supported with vpnc in Ubuntu 8.10 so it could not connect.

Can you comment which Ubuntu release you've installed? I'm going to

[Bug 291480] Re: ATI Radeon 9200 does not work so-good as in other Linux distros

2008-11-03 Thread 836v
About the driver I do use,
:~$ glxinfo | grep render
IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 0 16
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R200 20060602 AGP 8x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE TCL

I just've installed Ubuntu 8.10 without modification (I installed the
normal multimedia codecs and also, for Firefox, the Flash player plugin
and Java, to see web videos).

The result of fglrxinfo it is (in Spanish):
:~$ fglrxinfo
El programa «fglrxinfo» puede encontrarse en los siguientes paquetes:
 * xorg-driver-fglrx
 * xorg-driver-fglrx-envy
Pruebe: sudo apt-get install
bash: fglrxinfo: orden no encontrada

So I don't have installed fglrxinfo.

The glxgears output with the default video settings (I guess you refer
to the FPS using glxgears command):

:~$ glxgears
IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 0 16
4734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 946.634 FPS
5280 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1055.868 FPS
5323 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1064.454 FPS
5309 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1061.649 FPS
5301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1060.191 FPS
5285 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1056.930 FPS

Otherwise, the output of the video, as you advise, it's:
~$ glxgears
IRQ's not enabled, falling back to busy waits: 0 16
4480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 895.928 FPS
5265 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1052.914 FPS
5306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1061.022 FPS
5365 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1072.865 FPS
5326 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1065.139 FPS
5249 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1049.729 FPS

Before that, trying to get better video performance I have installed
DRIconf and I've set up all its settings to the minimum: minimum image
quality, minimum texture units (2), using HiperZ to enhance performance,
etc. all of which has been a bit helpful as before that the frames in
5.0 seconds didn't go higher than 4200 or so (at its best). Now the OS
goes notably faster, scrolling the windows not longer lag.

But the videos still had a quite poor FPS, the video buttons mostly
don't respond when full size video is displaying (about 3 seconds delay
to respond since clicking on stop or when trying to change volume..
Sometimes even fail to respond and so one has to click several times).

With the gstreamer-properties set to W windows (without Xv) perhaps the
Youtube videos go slightly faster.. The sliding bar for the volume and
the other buttons it lag (just) about 2 second now. The images go also a
bit quicker, but not smooth. And still each few seconds the image
freezes for an instant at its own or when passing the mouse over (or
trying to click) a button.

[Bug 292574] Re: Totem flickers

2008-11-03 Thread uds
Dear Developers!

I googled for flickering gstreamer, and found this bug.
The simptoms are similar, 8.10, amd64, ati driver and gstreamer.
Other suggested that replacing the video output driver from default (xv->x11 or
anything) should help.
They were right, all players (Árpi's mplayer, xine) with this setting altered
could play the movie without flickering.

My question is: Where can I alter totem's options, or gstreamer's to do
not use 'xv' ?

Thanks, UDS

[Bug 293189] Re: [intrepid] [regression] white screen using compiz with radeon 9550 and ati opensource driver

2008-11-03 Thread MaxNegro
ups. You caught me with my pants down. Strange thing is: I installed
fglrx for a test AFTER upgrading and finding the white screen in compiz,
removed it since I was unable to play videos in xv and (my bad) failed
to reset my computer (or unload kernel module). Anyway now it's working,
and I'm unable to reproduce the white screen, so maybe something got
installed by mistake during upgrade, and got disinstalled while I was
experimenting?

Feel free to close the bug, obviously.

[Bug 293305] Re: Inactive import folder in f-spot

2008-11-03 Thread Florian Heinle
After running f-spot with LC_ALL=C LANG=C f-spot the box is enabled and
it's possible to set the import path, which will then get stored
correctly to gconf (workaround)

I had Wireless enabled and working but disabled it since I wanted to use
my 3G connection instead. After my task was done I wanted to go back to
Wireless. After a while it crashed and nm-applet disappeared.

[Bug 283762] Re: Does not recognize unstripped video packages

2008-11-03 Thread fabrice_sp
Extended Test case:
sudo apt-get install libavcodec-unstripped-51 libavformat-unstripped-52
libavutil-unstripped-49
then
sudo apt-get install openmovieeditor

gives the following message:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libavcodec-unstripped-51 libavformat-unstripped-52
  libavutil-unstripped-49
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libavcodec51 libavformat52 libavutil49 libfltk1.1 libgavl0 libmpeg3-1
  openmovieeditor

Normally, libavcodec-unstripped-51, libavformat-unstripped-52 and
libavutil-unstripped-49 packages shouldn't be uninstalled.

It's working with the version of my ppa.

but there is no gpg-functionality left in

[Bug 279187] Re: regression: usplash causes system to beep and hang

2008-11-03 Thread aldebx
Gosh!! I was being driven crazy by this bug!
On my laptop with nVidia GeForce8400M GS this happens randomly at bootup,
shutdown, while entering suspend and simply logging off and on. Since this
happens also in occasions other than bootup and shutdown I guess it is not so
tightly related to the usplash module.

This always happens with restricted 'nvidia' drivers, always with
version 177, seldom with 173.

Today's updates from nvidia-glx-173 (173.14.12-1-0ubuntu4) to
173.14.12-1-0ubuntu5 made the problem to always appear also with driver
173.

[Bug 293109] Re: Error message when trying to purge virtualbox-ose

2008-11-03 Thread Daniel Hahler
This is caused by the following snippet from
/var/lib/dpkg/info/virtualbox-ose.postrm:
# Automatically added by dh_installinit
if [ "$1" = "purge" ] ; then
update-rc.d vboxdrv remove >/dev/null || exit $?

Since virtualbox-2.0 also ships this file, it still exists and "update-
rv.d remove" fails.

Unfortunately I have no idea about how this should get fixed.

[Bug 293213] Re: k-d-s applies incorrect xmodmap that breaks macbook brightness keys

2008-11-03 Thread John Dong
Even worse, I don't even know how to properly categorize this horrific
brokenness, maybe an experienced QT4 soul can handle this:

Qt4 doesn't even capture the XF86MonBrightness* keys -- to the keyboard
shortcut applet they don't exist (i.e. you can't grab those keys as
shortcuts) -- the Qt4::Keys_* items don't exist for those keysyms
either.

In addition, Kubuntu uses nonstandard hackish mappings XF86Launch4 and
XF86Launch5 in Guidance for the other set of common brightness keys
(mapped in xmodmap), and those are actually in Qt Key_Launch6 and
Key_Launch7??

Something really weird and wacky is going on in the handling of
brightness keys all the way down to the QT stack which, to this GNOME
user, looks like resulted in a large stack of hacks to get to where we
are today. IMO this needs to be fixed at the Qt level to recognize the
XF86MonBrightness{Up,Down} keys properly, so that we can stop using
Xmodmap hacks that incidentally don't seem to work!

[Bug 293300] [NEW] xserver-xorg fails to correctly configure dual-monitors

2008-11-03 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

In Intrepid, I'm trying to configure my nVidia GeForce 6800 to display
via its DVI and VGA output, two monitors.

When the computer boots, the screens are mirrored, but when GDM loads,
the screens become scrambled and can not be used.

In fact, I'm in tty1 right now.

I tried the setup with Windows XP and it worked after nVidia's
configuration wizard was ran.

I am using a default install of Intrepid using the 'free software only'
option, thus no proprietary drivers are in use - only main and universe
software.

The monitors are Dell 1905FP (1280x1024) and LG Flatron W1934S
(1440x900).

I will attach my 'sudo lscpi -vvnn' and 'xorg.conf' file.

[Bug 293302] [NEW] [intrepid] laptop keyboard stops responding

2008-11-03 Thread James Burkle
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Precision M60 laptop, and I just upgraded to intrepid.
When I leave my laptop unattended for any length of time, my keyboard
stops functioning, and my Gnome drop down menus do not work. I am unable
to switch to terminal via ctrl + alt + f2. When I click Applications,
Places, System, or the logout button, the button shows that it is
depressed, but no menu appears. The only way that I am able to restart
is by pressing the power button and waiting 60 seconds for it to
automatically reboot. The install is pretty clean.

Hardy worked fine. I think this might only happen when I close the
screen on my laptop (it is not set to go into hibernation or standby or
anything like that). What else is needed from me?

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-11-03 Thread foucault
1) I use my laptop almost the entire time on battery power. I bought one of
this small, long-lasting Netbooks, which you can take everywhere and which you
will not often use with power cable attached: an EeePC 1000H.
2) With Windows XP, i don't hear any clicks. There seem to be no load cycles
while the laptop is on.
3) With default Intrepid, the head is parked every few seconds, far too much. I
just can't see, how this should enhance battery power. I changed that to the
save Windows XP behavior.
4) If Ubuntu could park the head and leave it there for some time, everything
would be fine. Unfortunately, there is just too much disk access rendering the
head parking thing entirely useless and destroying the hard disk.
5) If Ubuntu uses the hard disk that differently from Windows XP, and puts my
hard disk at risk, I call it a bug. Intentionally implementing is even worse. I
also found out, that while -B 191 parks the head roughly as often as -B 128, -B
192 doesn't park it at all.
6) Conclusion: fix this. As it seems, some hard disks work entirely different
on this matter as others. The only way to fix this bug ist therefore the
openSUSE way: Use a Blacklist that knows, how to handle specific disks and
apart from that use safe values. Safe values as in: "Utilize the disk the same
way Windows does, because that's what the manufacturer had in mind."

[Bug 73457] Re: MASTER "Firefox is already running, but is not responding" when /home is an NFS directory

2008-11-03 Thread stevenschlansker
I apologize for resurrecting this bug report from the dead, but I
anticipate that if I file a new report it will just be marked as a
duplicate of this one :)

I recently upgraded a few machines to Intrepid and am now experiencing this
problem. Same symptoms - 90% of the time firefox says it's already running or
refuses to start at all (no windows or anything). Firefox is already not
running. There's no stale lockfiles.
Remounting the NFS file system with nolock mitigates the problem, but that's
obviously not an acceptable long-term solution

Setup:

Client: Intrepid Ibex up-to-date amd64 with /home mounted NFS
Server: FreeBSD 7 with a UFS2 volume exported

Could someone confirm and/or reopen the bug?

I am very willing to help troubleshoot, but I'll need some guidance - I
don't know too much about NFS locking.

Thanks,
Steven Schlansker

about the failure ?

[Bug 249592] Re: Brasero: hangs during mp3 file loading

2008-11-03 Thread Tuomas Aavikko
Sorry i gave wrong information, Brasero hangs when opening new audioCD project
and trying
to browse folders, when entering one which contains mp3 files, it hangs.

Just tested, if it is related to filenames, containing: date spaces etc.
No effect, hangs occur every time.

[Bug 292081] Re: 3G with option PCMCIA modem and ISP Telia doesn't work

2008-11-03 Thread ThomasNovin
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: network-manager

I upgraded to Intrepid yesterday. I tried plugging in my Option 3G
PCMCIA modem today to use the 3G connection. The card was sucessfully
identified and some kind of wizard set some options for my ISP, Telia.

When I tried to use it though, it doesn't work. It seems to be
  complaining about the PIN.

I tried setting the PIN to the correct value and also tried with a dummy
username and password but it didn't help.

I have previously used this modem successfully but then used the
comgt[1] utility to "convert" it from USB storage to USB modem. IIRC I
also used comgt to enter the PIN.
