2008-11-06 Thread Nausser
Do you mean removing eth0? My internet connection has always worked;
however, I've never had the nm-applet running in the notification area.
The only way to make it show up is to run command
sudo /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart. This puts the network manager
in the notification area although it shows no physical connection. This
whole time though actually having a connection. I only need it up there
so I can connect and disconnect my vpn as I allways have in Hardy.
Does this still sound like your issue?

2008-11-06 Thread Carl Karsten
@p.tar - can you unload/deactivate/remove everything sensible related to
the network, then see if the router on/off causes the same behavior.

On my box, having the laptop AC power adapter plugged in causes the
almost immediately continues to shutdown which makes me think it is
related to the signals that hardware send to say I am plugged in.

In a few hours I will see if network cable makes a difference on my box.

This is the configuration that seems to hace solved the problem. Now
wired and wireless network seem to work perfectly from the network
manager:

#iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth1
#iface eth1 inet dhcp

auto eth2
#iface eth2 inet dhcp

auto ath0
#iface ath0 inet dhcp

auto wlan0
#iface wlan0 inet dhcp

Hope it helps.

[Bug 294729] [NEW] X Error: BadAlloc (XKEYBOARD:XkbSetNamedIndicator) on certain remote X clients

2008-11-06 Thread Russ W. Knize
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

Since upgrading my local machine from hardy to intrepid, I am no longer
able to interact with any X11-based software from certain remote hosts.
The applications will launch fine, but if a widget that can accept any
keyboard input has focus and a key is pressed, the app will immediately
crash with:

X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 151 (XKEYBOARD)
Minor opcode of failed request: 16 (XkbSetNamedIndicator)
Serial number of failed request: 5096
Current serial number in output stream: 5188

The apps in questions are being launched from older Sun Solaris
machines:

SunOS 5.9 Generic_118558-39 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V440

All X apps fail the exact same way. This includes xterm, nedit, etc.
These same tools on the same remote hosts still work fine with the X
server on another hardy machine that I have. I have tested launching
similar tools from other types of hosts, such as Ubuntu dapper and
hardy, Debian etch, Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS release 3, etc. They
all work fine with the intrepid X server.

[Bug 294728] [NEW] Public shares not possible in home folder (Hardy 8.04)

2008-11-06 Thread Max-Ulrich Farber
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Folders in my home directory can not be shared with guest access
permission, even if the acces mode is set to 0777. That is the case with
net usershare as well as with shares in /etc/samba/smb.conf. The
automatic adding of permissions in Nautilus does not help either.

Obviously this is a bug in samba 3.0.28 a ( Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron),
because it is fixed in Samba 3.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.10 Intrepid Ibex). Please
fix it in Hardy too (Hardy is LTS!).

[Bug 293220] Re: kernel log daemon error and stalls for 5 mins during startup

2008-11-06 Thread IanW
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report.
3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the
resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

[Bug 294730] [NEW] Screensaver hangs after Intrepid update

2008-11-06 Thread MikeR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

On a system upgraded (over the net) from 8.04 to 8.10:
Using any screensaver (gnome-screensaver ot xscreensaver) screen saver starts
OK, and can be stopped within a few minutes. If I only get back to my desktop a
couple of hours later, either mouse movement or keyboard action stops screen
saver display, and I am left with a blank screen, mouse cursor still shows and
moves, but no icons or panels. Only way out is via power cycle.

Tried changing USB keyboard to PS2 - no improvement.

This did not happen under 8.04.
Only workaround I found was to uninstall both gnome-screensaver and
xscreensaver. Now screen goes black, but both mouse and/or keyboard restore
working desktop.

[Bug 294727] Re: Tooltip in Task view shows wrong information

2008-11-06 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs
effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
4. a screenshot of the issue you're seeing.
Thanks!

[Bug 294732] [NEW] Gnome panel shows up over full screen terminal

2008-11-06 Thread Kevin Sharkey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I am running 8.04, mostly with the defaults
metacity:
  Installed: 1:2.22.0-0ubuntu4
Terminal: 2.22.1
Gnome Panel: 2.22.2

If the terminal is in full screen, the panels are hidden. If firefox
(for example) is in the same desktop (not full screen), the gnome panels
show up when the focus is on firefox, and are re-hidden when the focus
is shifted by alt-tab. This is what I think should happen.

If the focus shifts in another way (closing firefox or switching
desktops (ctrl-alt-arrow)), then the focus is on the terminal (by
default) and I can type there, but the panels don't realize it, I have
to click on the screen or hit alt-tab to hide them. I have to
switch desktops often, so it would be nice...

I realize there are work-arounds, and this certainly isn't high
priority, but it doesn't seem to hard to implement (without having seen
the code), and it would be nice.

3-group the tasks by priority, than by category
4-move the mouse over a task

expected result:
the content of the task should be shown in the tool tip

actual result

2008-11-06 Thread Evan Dandrea
I suspect this is not a bug in usb-creator. Can you elaborate on the
exact problem that is occuring please? Are disks modified by usb-
creator not automatically mounting anymore, or are all disks, regardless
of whether or not usb-creator has modified them, not automatically
mounting?

Re: [Mactel-support] [Bug 278190] Re: [ath9k] AR5418 frequently fails to connect to WEP/WPA network

This seems to affect some of the Macs with Broadcom hardware as well.
Oddly, oftentimes, users install wife in place of n-m and things start
working.

I found a solution, here's a copy of my post on the ubuntuforums:

Turns out that this has something to do with the Wireless Bluetooth
being on the same chip (or perhaps not, still working on it). In
/sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/ there are two files that I had to
modify in order to make this work:

 /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/bluetooth
 /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/wlan

They each contain a single boolean value. The bluetooth value
 contained
a 1 and the wlan contained a 0. You cannot modify this values while
 your
system is running, therefore, the solution was to add two lines to my
 /etc/rc.local file:

 echo 0 /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/bluetooth # disable
 bluetooth
 echo 1 /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/wlan # enable wireless

As soon as I restarted, it came up with absolutely no problems.

Now, it may be that they can both be enabled at the same time, I
 haven't
 tested that far yet.

Ok, seems this actually depends on the connection's MTU setting. When
manually setting MTU to 1412 (as it was configured in Hardy) with a
'sudo ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1412', the connection is stable. Marking as
duplicate of 278309.

[Bug 294742] [NEW] NetworkManager applet doesn't ask again for passwords when the connection fails

2008-11-06 Thread Lucian Chirita
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

To reproduce:
- create a vpnc connection using the NetworkManager applet
- choose not to save user and group passwords
- save the connection
- attempt to connect
- you will be prompted for the passwords
- write an invalid password
- the connection fails
- attempt to connect again
- you are not prompted for the passwords again
- the connection fails again

You will only be able to correct the password(s) if you edit the vpnc
connection, don't change anything, save it and attempt to connect again
(or, of course, if you log out and log in again into Gnome).

Using Ubuntu 8.10.

Relevant packages:
network-manager 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1
network-manager-gnome 0.7~~svn20081020t000444-0ubuntu1
