[Bug 294740] [NEW] many hidden konqueror processes running

2008-11-06 Thread Matthew Carpenter
Public bug reported:

I am running Kubuntu 8.04.

I've been running into the X.org Maximum number of clients reached
messages.

While I'm monitoring the output of xwininfo -root -children -tree, today I
noticed that I have 190 konqueror processes running.
I currently have only two Konqueror windows open and a total of 8 tabs between
them.

What gives?

A sample looks like this:

Is there a way to determine what those sessions are? How can I tell which ones
I can kill?
Why is this happening? Could it be tied to Konqueror KHTML crashing on many
Flash sites?

How can we fix this?

Thanks you,
Matt

[Bug 294739] [NEW] Requesting upgrade of eclipse to ganymede

2008-11-06 Thread Andrew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eclipse

Eclipse Ganymede has been out for a while. The packages in Ubuntu are
quite an old version (3.2 vs. 3.4)

I install Eclipse on my own for this reason and have never bothered with
the Ubuntu packages, but would would like to if they keep up to date
with the latest. This is not a bug, but rather a wish.

[Bug 294738] [NEW] Mouse button problem in 8.10

2008-11-06 Thread Rkimber
Public bug reported:

I have a Logitech LX7 usb/wireless mouse on my amd64x2 system. The mouse
has the normal three buttons (left, right, and wheel) plus two small
thumb buttons.

Under 8.04 I was able to use the left thumb button to paste text from
the clipboard. This was important because the middle (wheel) button is
not accurate enough when positioning inserts.

Under 8.10 the left thumb button no longer pastes from the clipboard,
though the wheel still does, and there appears to be no obvious means of
configuring it to do so.

X seems to think I have a Macintosh mouse:

[Bug 294737] [NEW] can't upgrade from a mirror on an isolated network

2008-11-06 Thread Brett Boren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

I have to operate a network that is isolated from the web. To keep my
machines up to date, I rsync archive.ubuntu.org to a 750GiB usb drive
once a week and sneaker-net it across to my private network. So far, all
the Ubuntu distributions have been able to keep updated in this way.
However, I can't dist-upgrade with either `apt-get dist-upgrade` or with
update-manager. I don't get any error, I get nothing but the equivalent
of no distribution upgrades available. I've set the apt preference for
normal upgrades.

Details - trying to go from hardy to intrepid on x86_64 machines.

[Bug 294723] Re: nepomuk uses directory .kde4 instead of .kde to store its repository

2008-11-06 Thread Jonathan Thomas
Seems to be hardcoded in kdebase-
runtime-4.1.3/nepomuk/strigibackend/nepomukmainmodel.cpp

namespace {
QString nepomukServerSocketPath() {
QString kdeHome = getenv( KDEHOME );
if ( kdeHome.isEmpty() ) {
kdeHome = QDir::homePath() + /.kde4;
}
return kdeHome + /share/apps/nepomuk/socket;
}

Good catch.

[Bug 294747] [NEW] Can't find root device, boot drops to BusyBox

2008-11-06 Thread rage9
Public bug reported:

Updated to 8.10 and can't boot into the new kernel 2.6.27-7. Many
people are having the same problem, over various hardware setups. The
most common issue is this error:

--error--
Loading, please wait...
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/*** does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-1ubuntu6) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs)

-end---error-

I keep also getting:
ata2: SRST failed (errno=-16)
ata2: SRST failed (errno=-16)
ata2: reset failed, giving up

I can boot into former kernel 2.6.24-21.

Some people have been able to solve this with the option: rootdelay=
Doesn't work for most of us it seems.

[Bug 294745] [NEW] glx doesn't repaint on rotated intel i965 screen

2008-11-06 Thread Mike Coleman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When my screen is rotated (I use 90 degrees left), programs like
glxgears do not update correctly. Specifically, if I start glxgears,
its display is approximately correct, except for a black bar across the
top of the window (20% height of window). If I then move the glxgears
window, display is perfect while I'm dragging it around and completely
frozen when I release it. Same behavior upon repeat. It's as if
updates are just not making it onto the screen. The stdout of glxgears
betrays no hint of a problem. If I unrotate my screen, everything works
perfectly. I do not have visual effects enabled.

[Bug 294742] Re: NetworkManager applet doesn't ask again for passwords when the connection fails

2008-11-06 Thread Lucian Chirita
Note that the applet remembers passwords even if you cancel the
passwords dialog. So if you attempt to connect and then change your
mind while inputting the passwords, you won't be able to connect later
since the applet uses the partial password(s) that you've written before
canceling the dialog.

[Bug 293797] Re: evolution programs crashes when using inside calendar

2008-11-06 Thread Greg Clark
I think I am having the same problem. It doesn't seem to generate

stopped having the problem.

[Bug 292473] Re: KDE4 in Intrepid lacks translations for messages with context or plural forms

2008-11-06 Thread Данило Шеган
Launchpad issues have been fixed yesterday (and they affected only 113
templates, which is not too bad considering the total number of KDE4
templates). This is partly the problem of Launchpad translations, which
I filed as bug 294198.

We also found an issue with language pack building in Ubuntu (eg.
kturtle was not affected by Launchpad issues at all, it's just that PO
files were processed on the build machine which had a really old gettext
which ignored all msgctxt entries).

So, the next step is for us to roll out a new language pack. We'll be
doing that tomorrow after we also copy new translations done only in
Hardy to Intrepid (see https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-
translators/2008-November/001911.html for details). Once we roll the
language pack out (basic reason is to fix KDE4 issues), please help us
test it.

As far as your other concerns go, part of the problem is that Ubuntu
lacks a dedicated translations coordinator (or a team). This is being
actively worked on (Canonical is hiring a new person to take that job
full time), and I am sure this will make huge impact on how Ubuntu
translations work and appear.

[Bug 290339] Re: Window List sometimes mixes up windows from different workspaces

2008-11-06 Thread Gerhard Radatz
Regarding my examples 1 3 in the bug description, I have to make a
correction based on further observation:

It seems that this is not a bug, but only an irritating behaviour:
Sometimes if I open an app which was maximized when I last closed it,
and the app did not remember the maximized state but the position and
size of the window, the new window will be slightly misplaced.
Therefore, it could leak a few pixels into the next or previous
workspace, which may or may not clearly visible. Since the window then
is partially on this other workspace, too, its icon is displayed
correctly in the window list.

So, this is NOT a bug (and my description was wrong, because it can be
seen on DEmaximized windows which just happen to be nearly as large as
if they were maximized).

However, the 2nd example, which is also what Andreas reported, is
independent from the other ones. During the last few days, this effect
did not reappear, however.

Here's a workaround for Intrepid 8.10, that seems to work for me;

[Bug 294751] [NEW] changing login window preferences fails

2008-11-06 Thread ronny
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu-8.10. Then I opened the menu entry
System-Administration-Login Window and typed in my password.

In the Login Window Preferences window I selected the tab Local,
selected the theme Human List and closed the window.

I logged out and noticed that a completely different theme was active.

I logged in and again opened the menu entry
System-Administration-Login Window and selected the tab Local. To
my surprise, the Theme combobox was set to Random from selected
instead of Selected only (which was selected when I closed the dialog)
and the selected themes were Circles and Happy GNOME instead of the
previously selected Human List.

I can reproduce the bug always (I have a snapshot in a VirtualBox

[Bug 204536] Re: sound volume always resets to 100% after reboot

2008-11-06 Thread Silent Ninja
I'm using the Ubuntu Intrepid release (not beta) with an amd64 machine,
and I have the same issue. I've tested the amixer fix, but it still
reset the master volume to 100%. The other volume records are fine and
they keep their settings, but the Master volume of the ALSA PCM on
front:1 (USB Audio) via DMA (PulseAudio), that one, keeps resetting to
100%. And that one is my master volume for all the sound output.

I have some big speakers and they REALLY sound when the volume is at
100%, it's not a ultra important bug, but it's really anoying eg. if you
restart the computer during night and suddenly it wakes up everyone.

[Bug 294753] [NEW] ImageJ chooses wrong java home

2008-11-06 Thread Peter Husen
Public bug reported:

ImageJ fails to run on an amd64 system if ia32-sun-java6-bin is installed. It
fails with the error message
 Running a 64-bit JVM is not supported on this platform.
This seems to be due to the script /usr/bin/imagej setting JAVA_HOME by
   JAVA_HOME=$(/usr/sbin/update-java-alternatives -l java-6-openjdk | head -1 |
cut -d' ' -f 3)
i.e. the top line returned from 'update-java-alternatives -l'. This happens to
be ia32-java-6-sun, even though /etc/alternatives/java points to
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java. The script then finds out using
'uname -m' that it is a 64 bit architecture, and therefore passes '-d64' to
java. This would work on a 64 bit jvm, but not on the 32 bit jvm chosen by the
script.

I guess update-java-alternatives is not the correct way to determine the
default java home. I don't know the correct approach, but this seems to work
for me:
   JAVA_HOME=$(dirname $(dirname $(dirname $(readlink /etc/alternatives/java

Also, I guess the script strictly should make sure it's a 64 bit jvm
instead of just using 'uname -m'

actually is just a directory... What's exactly the name of the second (where I
should change do_stop) script??
Thanks

[Bug 279262] Re: [regression] devices/interfaces not set to auto in /etc/network/interfaces get blacklisted in 0.7 (intrepid) but were managed in 0.6 (hardy and before)

2008-11-06 Thread Paul
Exact same problem here. Static IP config that worked fine in 8.04,
borked when 8.10 upgrade came. Can't alter using NM gui (no password
prompt - says I don't have permission). Connectivity to ISP is fine,
but DNS doesn't work.

Example:

$ ping google.com
ping: unknown host google.com

$ ping 64.233.187.99
PING 64.233.187.99 (64.233.187.99) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=241 time=39.9 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=241 time=47.5 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.187.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=241 time=37.3 ms

$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.1.128
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
# dns-nameservers 192.168.1.1

auto eth1

(why all the blank lines?)

$ cat /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile

[ifupdown]
managed=false

Really guys? Is it THAT difficult to make a DNS lookup when using a static IP
config? I'll be moving to Fedora if this isn't sorted out soon.

 Are you sure that the fix is OK for Intreprid AMD64.
 I've loaded the new gnome-pilot package :
  sudo aptitude -t intrepid-proposed gnome-pilot,

You need version 2.0.15-2ubuntu4. Please check apt-cache policy
gnome-pilot. If that version isn't there yet, your mirror is just
lagging a bit.

The master archive (archive.ubuntu.com) definitively has it.

[Bug 264769] Re: Intrepid - SIS video snow/fuzz

2008-11-06 Thread Bokkie
Hello,

I have a similar effect, where instead of the clear graphics I see graphics
interlaced with red or green patches/stripes.
This is already from the login screen.
I have actually got a screenshot where it seems to show up as well... Which is
strange, as the lines move, even in the screenshot...

This is the released Intrepid on a c-brand laptop (32-bit) with an
integrated SIS chip.

The two files requested above are attached, and here is some extra info:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux monodactylus 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Tue Nov 4 19:33:20 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Just for the heck of it, I have attached the screenshot too...

Playing a video on a 600 MHz thin client:

Xorg needed much less than that to display the video...
