[Bug 298157] [NEW] wine window disappers on compiz effects

2008-11-14 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Hello! I know this bug is a bit unusual, but it might be easy to fix and
very cool if it worked.

I'm trying to run Fallout3 on wine. I got everything working decently,
and I was surprised to see Compiz almost works with it: I can start the
game in full-screen, then I can twist the desktop cube, cover-flip
applications, activate expo, transparency, and it actually works, with
the Fallout3 window updating and everything.

When I switch windows I can see an entry for a "Fallout3" window in the
the task-bar (complete with a little pip-boy icon). However, if I keep
doing whatever I'm doing (flipping between windows or desktops, and
generally doing things outside the fallout window), at some point* the
Fallout window disappears, both from the screen and from the window list
(task-bar, alt-tab menu, cover-flip). I can hear the game sounds
continuing, so it doesn't completely crash, it just goes hidden
somewhere.

I know "Fallout3" is not even in the same dictionary with "supported",
but since the game actually works I'm sure it's either a bug in Compiz
or in Wine, and I'm hoping someone is willing to look into it, and at
least tell me what should I look at to find out what the problem is.
Imagine how cool a YouTube video of Fallout working among Compiz effects
in Ubuntu would be :)

By the way, I'm not using Wine from the Ubuntu repositories, I had to
get sources from 1.1.8 and a couple of patches to get it working; so I'm
attaching this only on Compiz, and I'll file it again separately for
Wine.

(*: I've written this entire report with the Fallout window in the
background, turned semi-transparent, and with the browser window above
it, also transparent (and with blur enabled), and it keeps working, so
it's very close to being perfect. The window only disappears when I play
with window/desktop switching. Also, I'm using the nVidia binary drivers
from the Ubuntu repository, with a GeForce 9600GT if anyone wants to
know.)

[Bug 140617] Re: Left speaker doesn't work on startup (Ubuntu 7.10) and digital out never with Revolution71

2008-11-14 Thread 8200
Hi Leann!

Sorry for writing you back so late but I didn't managed installing
linux-image-2.6.27.

But today I am using Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 (2.6.27-7-generic) and the bug is fixed!
After starting ubuntu the sound just works. No more need to adjust volume. :-)

[Bug 298155] [NEW] Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG doesn't reconnect

2008-11-14 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

On Intrepid, networking is not re-enabled coming out of suspend using
this card. The network icon on the panel has a little exclamation mark.
Right-clicking and selecting Enable Networking reconnects without
problem. Here is the dmesg part for the card:

[247061.528184] ipw2200 :06:0b.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0

I think this always happens with suspend, but I may have seen it happen
once without suspending and also succeed once from suspending, however
best to treat as a suspend issue for now. This bug is similar but not
identical to bug 289584. Originally after upgrading from hardy to
intrepid suspend and resume caused this problem but for nm-applet to be
missing entirely. I would start up nm-applet myself to fix it. After
some updates, nm-applet seems to survive suspend and resume, but does
not actually restart networking until forced to and this does not
require messing with any kernel modules.

After testing it with my notebook (Acer 5610 with core duo and Intel PRO

[Bug 298154] [NEW] adept upgrade button does not reenable after fetching current package list

2008-11-14 Thread Mike Williams
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
1. Open Adept using 'kdesudo adept'
2. Enter the 'Changes' section then click 'Upgrade'. Adept will notify
you that there are no packages able to be upgraded at the time, and that you
should fetch the package lists.
3. Enter the 'Sources' section, then click 'Fetch current package
lists'.
4. Return to 'Changes' after the update completes.
5. The 'Upgrade' button is still disabled, and the old error message is
still displayed.

Please note that the button isn't disabled because there are no
upgrades. In fact, if there are updates, the update notifier immediately
comes up and notifies me, but the button is disabled.

[Bug 298141] Re: Please merge ntfs-3g 1.2531-1.1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-11-14 Thread Chris Coulson
ntfs-3g (1:1.2531-1.1ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes (LP: #298141):
- Add udeb shlibs entries for libntfs-3g31-udeb.
- Create libntfs3g31-udeb and ntfs-3g-udeb.
- Copy ntfs-3g into the initramfs. If ntfs-3g is used to mount the root
filesystem (either directly or via a loopback mount), load the fuse
module beforehand, and save ntfs-3g's PID (indirectly) in
  /var/run/sendsigs.omit.
- Move ntfs-3g to /bin.
- Move libntfs-3g.so.* to /lib. Adjust libntfs-3g.so symlink to match.
- Add /sbin/mount.ntfs symlink to /bin/ntfs-3g.
- Add a symlink for the mount.ntfs manual page too.
- Pass basenames rather than full paths to pidof; create
  /dev/.initramfs/varrun if necessary.
- Always add ntfs and ntfs-3g to sendsigs.omit.
- Build against the external fuse libraries and add dependency on
  fuse-utils.
- Ensure ntfs-3g flushed dirty write data back to device
added ntfs-3f mount option "syncio" which opens the underlying
filesystem used by fuse with O_SYNC to ensure dirty write data is
written back to ntfs immediately. This allows us to remove the
  vm.dirty sysctl hacks from wubi.

[Bug 106621] Re: GNOME Trash doesn't show deleted files on fuse partitions (ecryptfs / encfs / Private / ntfs-3g)

2008-11-14 Thread Richard Laager
This is still broken with gvfs. I can confirm it on Intrepid with the
new ~/Private directory. Anything you trash under ~/Private is properly
put into ~/Private/.Trash-$UID, but it does not show up in Nautilus's
trash. This bug may be in the gvfs package rather than nautilus, but
since I'm seeing it in Nautilus, let's start there.

** Summary changed:

- Gnome Trash doesn't show deleted files on ntfs-3g partitions
+ GNOME Trash doesn't show deleted files on fuse partitions (ecryptfs / encfs /
Private / ntfs-3g)

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: trashapplet
-
- If I remove files from ntfs-3g partitions with Nautilus they are moved to
.Trash-$USER on the ntfs partition but they aren't shown in Trash so the only
solution to free space is to remove the trash directory.
- I am using Feisty with latest updates.
+ If I remove files from FUSE partitions with Nautilus they are moved to
+ .Trash-$USER on the FUSE partition but they aren't shown in Trash so the
+ only solution to free space is to remove the trash directory.

[Bug 246161] Re: [network-admin] Static IP only apply after reboot.

2008-11-14 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
Why importance of this bug is set to "Low" ? I think it's very important
bug if user with static IP can't connect to network/internet !!!

Also I've noticed, that this bug is reproducible only if network manager
process is running - static IP configuration is applied right after it
has been configured in network-admin if I kill NetworkManager and
NetworkManagerDispatcher before launching network-admin.

So, it seems this is not an upstream GST bug, but Ubuntu bug when using
network-admin together with network-manager.

[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-11-14 Thread Saïvann Carignan
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: compiz
-
If Firefox is running when Desktop Effects are enabled on my Dell
Inspiron 6000 or my HP zd7000, Firefox becomes an unresponsive window
with no window decorations. It's not possible to maximize, move it, or
otherwise interact with it. Disabling Desktop Effects restores sanity.

I retest desktop-effects every couple weeks, and this problem persists.
Since firefox is probably the single most important application used by
most users, this problem pretty much guarantees no casual user will use
  Desktop Effects.

- I realize this is a beta, and this will probably be fixed before RC, but
- wanted to make sure this simple but serious bug was in the issue
- tracker, since I didn't see any obvious duplicates, except for one
- rejected issue.
+ **Steps to reproduce :
+ 1. Open a single instance of Firefox with no tabs open.
+ 2. Go to http://www.htmlgoodies.com/legacy/beyond/javascript/bigsmall.html
+ 3. Click the "Maximize" link located at the top left of this webpage.
+ 4. Close Firefox.
+ 5. Re-open Firefox.
+ 6. Now the titlebar for Firefox and upper/lower panels should be missing.
+
+ Or
+
+ 1. Use the bigger resolution that your computer can take and open Firefox.
+ 2. If not already done, demaximize the Firefox window (right clic /
Demaximize).
+ 3. Close Firefox
+ 4. Change the screen resolution for a very lower one.
+ 5. Open Firefox
+
+ **Workaround : Install compizconfig-settings-manager , start ccsm, click
+ on "Workarounds" plugin in the "Utility" section and uncheck "Legacy
+ Fullscreen Support".

[Bug 264789] Re: USB Hard Drive Not Accessible

2008-11-14 Thread Tormod Volden
Ok, I think vol_id triggers the real bug (which may be the upstream
kernel bug). The patched udev rules just make sure vol_id is not run
(because this device is "disk" and not "partition"). With the original
udev rules, the udev process hangs at this vol_id call and will not
finish and hence the device never appear.

[Bug 285668] Re: [intrepid] In konqueror, rendered text often appears in status line and scroll bar

2008-11-14 Thread Jonathan Thomas
This used to happen in earlier KDE 4.1.x releases. I believe the main
thing is that the KHTML part thought that it was bigger than it actually
was and would paint over the status and scroll bars. I believe it has
since been fixed though, as I have not seen this in a long while.

[Bug 296710] Re: warning: ehci_hcd loaded AFTER uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd

2008-11-14 Thread zenzike
Yes, I can confirm that this happens on the following:
kernel: 2.6.27-8-generic
release: intrepid ibex 64 bit
where the following message appears in dmesg:
Warning! ehci_hcd should always be loaded before uhci_hcd and ohci_hcd, not
after

And also:
kernel: 2.6.24-21-generic
release: hardy heron 32 bit

In the hardy version there is no warning, but uhci is being loaded
before ehci. I don't know the details, but according to [1], this is not
good. I started probing around after a USB device of mine was behaving
strangely, I don't know if this is to do with ehci and uhci being loaded
in the wrong order, but warnings from the kernel aren't usually a good
thing.

[Bug 273184] Re: Update Manager list items are messy and chopped short in height.

2008-11-14 Thread botticchio
I am also affected by this bug. It isn't the first time it happened, but
today I decided to report it. I am not able to reproduce it precisely.
This time I noticed that the first time I pressed the Check button the
field's heights were correct. After pressing the Check button another
time, I noticed that only the lower items in the listing were stretched,
as shown in the attached screenshot:

"update_manager_bug1" shows the upper part of the list, which has the
firs two item displayed correctly; starting from the third item the
height is lowered.

"update_manager_bug2" shows the lower part of the list.

After checking a third time, every item was stretched, as shown in the
screenshot "update_manager_bug-after_checking_again".

Closing and reopening the Update Manager window partially solves the
issue. I tried every combination: closing and reopening the window,
closing and opening the Descriptions of the update, and checking again
many times. Sometimes the list is displayed correctly, sometimes only
the first items are displayed correctly, and sometimes every item is
stretched.

corner case and there's a workaround (using a mailinglist, or applying the
patch).
Since I'm not sure, if the quotes can get removed safely, can you forward the
bug to Debian BTS (e.g. using "reportbug"), asking for feedback on it and then
link it to this bug here?
I thing the quotes are required, if you want to use an address like "root
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"..
What are you using as SENDMAILTO exactly? Have you tried "emai1, email2"?

[Bug 289027] Re: xorg and intel graphic problem - Ubuntu 8.10

2008-11-14 Thread Mr.
I am now using new xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.4.2-1_i386.deb package from
debian unstable. In ubuntu is older package. After this upgrade everything is
O.K. and i have no problems with detection of my graphic card or resolution.
So if you have this problem, you can try the new version of

[Bug 298148] [NEW] export to flickr always exports original version

2008-11-14 Thread Alex Lubberts
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

Hi,

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and f-spot version 0.5.0.3-0ubuntu4.

In f-spot I have a lot of raw (.crw) images. These images have extra
versions that I converted to tiff. If I select a couple of images and
choose 'export to flickr' then I see in the preview pane the edited
(tiff) versions like I expected. But if I then click the export button,
not the tiff versions are uploaded as I would expect, but the original
raw version. (Of course, this fails...)

Regards,
Alex

[Bug 298140] [NEW] System logs can grow to unmanageable levels, consume entire root filesystem

2008-11-14 Thread Dylan McCall
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu's default configuration, it is possible for the system log
files in /var/log to grow as large as they wish. This can consume all
free space in the root filesystem, breaking systems that rely on file
access such as gksu, or web browsers that download to /tmp. At the
moment, huge log files cannot be resolved via a graphical interface.
Thus, this is a huge issue for desktop experience and server security
alike.

I mention server security because it is possible to make a server spew
log messages, consuming its free space and ultimately breaking the
thing.

Possible fixes:

* Create /var/log in a different partition by default to enforce a
particular maximum size. This can happen downstream.

* Create /var/log inside an image, as opposed to a real partition, so
that the fix could be applied smoothly during the upgrade process and
the log size increased dynamically. The image could even be compressed,
which should work out well for text only content. Again, that could
happen downstream.

* The system log daemon could itself enforce a specific log size as a
percentage of free space, ensuring that it never runs out of space for
new messages and never consumes all of the free space on disk. For
server administrators who really need those logs, configuration could
specify a safe backup location for logs that are not actually old.
(Unless it already supports that?)

* The system log daemon could try to detect redundant log messages and
act accordingly, possibly adding just the timestamps for extra messages
all in the same line. This would help server administrators, for
example, since a 4GB system log is not easily read even though it may
need to be to find other issues. (Although I suppose there are log
reading tools which present information in a similar way).

* gnome-system-log could notify the user when the log exceeds a
particular size and offer to remove old entries. (Back them up?). A
small daemon could run within a desktop user's session to notify him of
the same event.

This issue appeared to me not from an attack, but a /bug/ involving Intel
wireless drivers (#286285). There is a meta-issue where the user has his entire
root filesystem consumed by logs, possibly with worse results than the bug
itself. Because a bug - particularly a driver bug - can produce a logging
rampage, the system runs very slowly and encounters issues. Even moreso for
users who have not put /home into a separate partition, which is also the
default behaviour.

[Bug 297799] Re: ATI Catalyst 8.11 (fglrx 8.552) unknown symbol

2008-11-14 Thread Lowell Alleman
I have tried pulling the latest distro-specific packing but it doesn't
seem to work their either. I followed the process outlined on Phoronix
(which I adapted to work with the 8-11 release) with little success.
See http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=976&num=2

Mario, when you said that the scripts on phorogit are up to date, I
assume this is what you were talking about, is that correct?

I was able to get the fglrx kernel module to build by playing around
with various versions in some of the scripts, but I was never able to
get the module to actually load successfully. (I think I also saw the
same thing when I ran the installer with "--install" rather than using
the "--buildpkg Ubuntu/8.04" option.) The new error I ran into has
something to do with memory allocation or drm, but I'm not sure. Here
are the kernel messages:

fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg,
GERMANY' taints kernel.
[fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffers: 1171 MBytes.
[fglrx:drm_alloc] *ERROR* [driver] Allocating 0 bytes
[fglrx:firegl_init_device_list] *ERROR* Out of memory when allocating
device heads
[fglrx:firegl_init_module] *ERROR* firegl_init_devices failed

I found a post related to this as well,
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?p=51644 . One of the
suggestions was making sure to fully remove and reinstall the packages,
which did not appear to resolve my issue. Also, running "aticonfig
--initial -f" was suggested, but I kept ending up with a segfault.

aticonfig[21764]: segfault at 000c eip 08053d0d esp bfa31250
error 6

I thought the "fglrx" kernel module was technically optional? I realize
that most of the cool stuff would be disabled, but It should still at
least provide a working X environment, right? I'm assuming that trying
to mix and match kernel modules and X drivers would be a bad idea...

[Bug 268868] Re: [Intrepid Alpha 5] NameVirtualHost entry in ports.conf causes "NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts" warning

2008-11-14 Thread Glassbox
My upgrade to Intrepid Ibex added a ports.conf to the apache files,
containing the lines
NameVirtualHost:80
Listen 80

(and some ssl stuff).

this gave the error: [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts
when I restarted apache, and sent all my pre-existing virtualhost entries to
the default /var/www/ localhost location.

Just commenting out the NameVirtualHost line didn't solve the problem
for me, my solution ended up being making the NameVirtualHost and
default virtual host MATCH port settings by:

Stripping the :80 port reference from the NameVirtualHost *:80 line in
ports.conf and also stripping the :80 port reference from the default
virtual host as well, so now both looked like:

NameVirtualHost *

... and ...

And now my other virtualhosts are working again.

Please sync hnb 1.9.18-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
We apply a patch to fix the cursor when editing a node. Debian has also fixed
this, so it is ok to sync.

Changelog since current intrepid version 1.9.18-3ubuntu2:

hnb (1.9.18-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * New maintainer. Thanks James Morrison! (Closes: #465888)
  * Fix broken cursor. (Closes: #339613)
  * Save recovery files in hnb's native format and choose a different naming
scheme. Thanks to Steve Pomeroy. (Closes: #340061)
  * Don't lose fresh nodes created in search mode after pressing left key.
This is achieved through a adapted configuration file and thus does not
fix bug #405117 for old installations.
  * Use sensible-browser instead of w3m. (Closes: #396370)
  * Document exporting via shell command. (Closes: #223268)
  * Don't compress Documentation.hnb. It is supposed to be read by our users

Hi Julien,

1) With tesseract, gocr & ocrad installed (my config), gocr is used.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep tesseract
tesseract-ocr install
tesseract-ocr-deu install
tesseract-ocr-eng install
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep gocr
gocrinstall
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep ocrad
ocrad install

gives us:

gocr -v 1 -f ASCII -m 4 -m 64 -o /tmp/sub.WW9GKU0601.pgm.txt
/tmp/sub.WW9GKU0601.pgm
 Optical Character Recognition --- gocr 0.45 20071126

I will run 2 more checks without gocr. 2) with ocrad and tesseract & 3)
with tesseract ony as per your request.

Will post again with each result

Cheers, Rob

[Bug 298143] [NEW] Octave application missing after upgrade

2008-11-14 Thread Rebecca Palmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

After upgrading from amd64 Hardy with Octave installed to amd64
Intrepid, Octave was no longer installed. As far as I have noticed it
was the only application so affected.

This is only a minor bug as Octave can easily be reinstalled (sudo apt-
get install octave).

Note that "octave" is a virtual package, which in both Hardy and
Intrepid is provided only by octave3.0, but in Gutsy (which this system
started with) was provided by octave2.9.

[Bug 298144] [NEW] Periodic input freezes

2008-11-14 Thread Diaa Sami
Public bug reported:

I'm using the latest Opera in the repos(9.27) on the current latest
Ubuntu(tried both Intrepid & Hardy) and I'm facing a very annoying bug, while
running Opera I get periodic input freezes/stalls which are not equally spaced,
each lasts around 10-20 seconds, note that these freezes block all input(mouse
and keyboard) and affect all GUI apps not only Opera.
During these freezes, the mouse moves but no response happens(toolbar buttons
are not highlighted, etc) and clicks are completely ignored, keyboard events
are ignored as well, It happens regardless Opera is the active window or not
but usually happens more when it's active.
I don't use SCIM or other input methods.
I've tried running Opera using the following command-line but it's the same:
opera -nolirc -nomail -disableinputmethods -debugkeyboard -debugxerror
I checked X logs but I don't see anything wrong(but I'm no pro).

The problem happens with the latest Opera(9.62) version as well.

Some guys were generous enough to help me with some suggestions at the
opera.linux mailing list but unfortunately none solved the problem, see
http://groups.google.com/group/opera.linux/browse_thread/thread/bb176bbc30c30a7b

note that I have another machine(a laptop) that has a similar software
configuration but doesn't suffer from the problem.

I have an Nvidia 9800 GT card and I'm using the proprietary driver from
the repos(177.80)
