[Bug 331049] [NEW] 2.6.27-12 booting error
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-headers-2.6.27-12 Hi. I've Kubuntu 8.10 64bit, freshly installed (no upgrade from previous version). I have kde 4.1.4. My machine is a laptop, dell xps m1530. No external drivers, the only driver I'm using is Nvidia 180.22 installed manually running the package from the Nvidia website. I've just update my kernel from 2.6.27-11 to 2.6.27-12 as Adept have notified me...and now when I reboot I have this problem: after a quick loading of the kubuntu logo, on the black screen appears something like this: *Checking battery state... /dev/xxx: setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254) then nothing. Just ctrl+alt+del (it remember me of windows...) and reboot with the old kernel, luckily I still have it. I really can't understand why they update so often the kernel when there is the risk (real, as seen) to have an unbootable system after an update. [Bug 331082] [NEW] please sync jaunty ecryptfs kernel module with linus' git tree
Public bug reported: Tim- Please sync Jaunty's ecryptfs kernel module with Linus' upstream git tree. There are some errors in dmesg that Tyler believes are fixed with the upstream code. The messages on my system look like this: [ 46.330479] ecryptfs_parse_tag_70_packet: max_packet_size is [56]; real packet size is [51] [ 46.330486] ecryptfs_decode_and_decrypt_filename: Could not parse tag 70 packet from filename; copying through filename as-is I'm attaching a patch from Tyler. This is for spot-check review only! I think it will be in our best interest for you to do the sync via git merging mechanisms. [Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down
Further report confirming that as of Jaunty Alpha 3 (upgraded from Alpha 2 directly rather than from the liveCD) things are good for this bug on my HP/Compaq F763NR laptop (with MCP67 rev a2 chipset). Currently running Alpha4 and it's still good, and the Alpha4 CD boots OK. I'm now at kernel 2.6.28-7, although as I write this, it's updating to 2.6.28-8... AND 2.6.28-8 just booted ok as well. I'm pretty close to upgrading my primary work partition from Intrepid to Jaunty primarily to get rid of this annoyance. If nothing else, it's a real headache when explaining to doubtful buddies how Ubuntu Linux is absolutely ready for General Purpose office usage, and then I had to hold a key down during boot... Generates serious eyerolls from them and some embarrassment for me... Perception is everything unfortunately, even if this is minor bug it generates an immediate negative impression for newbs before the desktop has even come up, and that colours the whole out of box experience. I'm so glad to see it fixed for my hardware combination! I've had good luck with kernels: 2.6.28-6 2.6.28-7 2.6.28-8 -- System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/272247 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 330910] Re: png generation fails when /var/log/bootchart does not exist
Hello Scott, Thank you for your reaction. I disagree that the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) explicitly does not permit /var/log to be on a tmpfs. Grepping on tmpfs and on tmp in the current version (2.3) of the FHS gives the following results: ame...@intrepid { ~ }$ curl http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.txt.gz -s | zgrep tmpfs ame...@intrepid { ~ }$ curl http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.txt.gz -s | zgrep tmp /tmp : Temporary files /var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots tmp Temporary files /tmp : Temporary files The /tmp directory must be made available for programs that require temporary Programs must not assume that any files or directories in /tmp are preserved Although data stored in /tmp may be deleted in a site-specific manner, it is recommended that files and directories located in /tmp be deleted /usr/tmp - /var/tmp tmp Temporary files preserved between system reboots wtmp record of all logins and logouts The utmp file, which stores information about who is currently using the /var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots The /var/tmp directory is made available for programs that require temporary stored in /var/tmp is more persistent than data in /tmp. Files and directories located in /var/tmp must not be deleted when the system is booted. Although data stored in /var/tmp is typically deleted in a interval than /tmp. I also read the FHS 2.3 in great detail. According to my reading and understanding of the FHS 2.3, the following directories inside /var *must* be _preserved_ between reboots: /var/cache /var/tmp the following directories inside /var *should* be _preserved_ between reboots: /var/lib the following directories inside /var *must* be _removed_ between reboots: /var/run FHS does not explicitly say anything about /var/log being preserved between reboots, so storing /var/log on a tmpfs is not explicitly forbidden by the FHS and therefor it is allowed. I can understand that you disagree with me that this issue ought to be fixed, but according to my reading of the published FHS you cannot use it as an argument. I am, however, open for every other argument against this fix.
