[Bug 331049] [NEW] 2.6.27-12 booting error

2009-02-18 Thread Shaikailash
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-headers-2.6.27-12

Hi. I've Kubuntu 8.10 64bit, freshly installed (no upgrade from previous
version). I have kde 4.1.4.
My machine is a laptop, dell xps m1530.
No external drivers, the only driver I'm using is Nvidia 180.22 installed
manually running the package from the Nvidia website.
I've just update my kernel from 2.6.27-11 to 2.6.27-12 as Adept have notified
me...and now when I reboot I have this problem: after a quick loading of the
kubuntu logo, on the black screen appears something like this:

*Checking battery state...
/dev/xxx:
setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254)

then nothing. Just ctrl+alt+del (it remember me of windows...) and reboot with
the old kernel, luckily I still have it.
I really can't understand why they update so often the kernel when there is the
risk (real, as seen) to have an unbootable system after an update. I think of
the normal-medium user who want to try linux as a stable system. I think this
is quite worrying.
Thank you

Uhm, I'm not really sure what to say here. We're using all GTK+

Russ, you're right: su-to-root is in menu in Ubuntu. However, it doesn't
seem to be installed by default, and I don't think it's appropriate to
cause the whole menu package to be installed on Ubuntu GNOME desktops
just because some package need su-to-root. Thus I stand by my earlier
conclusion that Ubuntu's lintian should disable the warning about gksu.

[Bug 246450] Re: firefox shows grey box instead of flash player on amd64

2009-02-18 Thread Martin
I was having the same problem, and I just installed the native 64-bit
adobe flash player according to Sean's instructions. Seems to be working
fine so far. It seems Adobe has releases a new alpha version
(10.0.d21.1) of the plugin since though, so the instructions go as
follows:

$ apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree
$ wget
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/libflashplayer-10.0.d21.1.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz
$ tar zxvf libflashplayer-10.0.d21.1.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz
$ mv libflashplayer.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

This new version 10.0.d21.1 has a timestamp Dec 10, 2008 -- does anybody
know whether there's a newer one yet? The macromedia.com download
directory isn't browsable, and I couldn't find any official site dealing
with this. Where does Adobe officially release these things?

Can someone try and figure out what it's doing. With the new patches it
will only load 15 users from the network, so that can't really be the

[Bug 331066] [NEW] New Tracker does not work: applet is invisible.

2009-02-18 Thread Benjamin Redelings
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker-search-tool

I tried out the new Tracker packages, but it seems they aren't quite
configured right.

1. My startup files run tracker-applet and trackerd.

2. The .xsession-errors file gives the following message:

(trackerd:21511): Tracker-CRITICAL **: Couldn't disable all volumes, The
name org.freedesktop.Tracker.Indexer was not provided by any .service
files

3. tracker-applet runs, but its icon never shows up in the notification
area.

I have tried several things, including deleting all tracker
configuration files (in .local/, .config/ and .cache/).  Tracker-applet
still hangs. If you strace tracker-applet, it does this forever:

poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=4, events=POLLIN}], 2, 0) = 0 (Timeout)
read(3, 0x13fbd64, 4096)= -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily

[Bug 245740] Re: passing -x '' to ncftpls by duplicity causes it to fail

2009-02-18 Thread Kenneth Loafman
This bug has been fixed in the recent 0.5.09 version at
http://duplicity.nongnu.org. I finally moved to running ncftp directly
through pexpect rather than going through their utilities (ncftpls,
..get, ..put). This gets rid of the issues of the complicated and
obscure command lines and all the inconsistencies that occur between
ncftp's versions of those.

[Bug 331074] [NEW] webhttrack - buffer overflow detected - htsserver terminated

2009-02-18 Thread Linus Hoppe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: webhttrack

When i tried to run webhttrack, it starts working perfectly.
But when i clicked on the button named Start in
http://localhost:8082/server/step4.html, the next page couldn't be loaded:

Verbindung fehlgeschlagen
Firefox kann keine Verbindung zu dem Server unter localhost:8082 aufbauen.
Obwohl die Website gültig erscheint, konnte keine Verbindung aufgebaut werden.

nochmals.

So because of this problem httrack doesn't copy my website!

[Bug 331077] [NEW] gedit : margins on printed documents are too small

2009-02-18 Thread Guillaume Pratte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

In gedit 2.24.2 (Ubuntu 8.10), the margins of a printed document does
not seems to be configurable. The left margin is very small - about 1
cm.

While such small margins maximizes the printable text on a page, the
left margin is too small to punch holes in the sheet using a paper hole
punch - holes are punched in the text.

See attached file, a print-out of the Thin clients Wikipedia page,
copied from a Web browser and pasted in gedit for printing. Having
configurable margins could enable the user to avoid such problems.

This bug was fixed in the package ktorrent - 3.2+dfsg.1-2ubuntu1

---
ktorrent (3.2+dfsg.1-2ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Merge with Debian, remaining changes: (LP: #296433)

- Build-depend on libboost-serialization1.35-dev since unversioned -dev is
  in universe
- Change plasma-applet-ktorrent to plasma-widget-ktorrent since we're
  supposed to call them widgets for the users

ktorrent (3.2+dfsg.1-2) experimental; urgency=low

  * Rename plasma-applet-ktorrent to plasma-widget-ktorrent, add
conflicts/replaces with plasma-applet-ktorrent.
  * Change debian sections:
- source package, ktorrent, ktorrent-data: net
- plasma-widget-ktorrent: kde
- ktorrent-dbg: devel
  * Bump kdebase-workspace-dev build depend to 4:4.2.0.
  * Drop libstreamanalyzer-dev build depend, not needed.

ktorrent (3.2+dfsg.1-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * Remove 02_appear_as_kde3.2rc1.diff, no longer relevant.
  * Fix issues with debian/watch (lintian warning etc.).

ktorrent (3.2~rc1+svn923353-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * New upstream development snapshot:

- translations from 3.2 RC1 tarball;
  * Another attempt to fix stalled torrents until client restart problem.
  * Keep disguising as 3.2 RC1 to the rest of the torrent world.

ktorrent (3.2~rc1+svn919439-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * New upstream development snapshot based on the new development release
(3.2 RC1):

  * Improve descriptions.
  * Update debian/not-installed.
  * Split off ktorrent plasma applet to plasma-applet-ktorrent package:
- this moves kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 and libplasma dependencies to
  plasma-applet-ktorrent package;
- make ktorrent package suggest plasma-applet-ktorrent;
- plasma-applet-ktorrent replaces earlier ktorrent package.
  * Split off architecture independent files to ktorrent-data package.
  * Add debian/installgen file.
  * Update debian/copyright.
  * Update lintian overrides.
  * Add debian/watch file.

Anything that we (upstream) could do to help fixing this? It is quite
important for us, as 0.5.9 was quite buggy and lacked a lot of important
features.

[Bug 317209] Re: Hugin 0.7.0-1 crashes after 'align' in assistant / when optimising images

2009-02-18 Thread Ian
I've just tried this on another PC here - I thought it still had Hardy
x64, but it turns out to be Intrepid x64 too.

A new install of Hugin from the PPA, and it works with the two test
images here.

The only obvious difference I can think of is that this is a AMD Athlon
64 machine whereas the one that it doesn't work on is an Intel Core2 Duo
- is it possible there is an issue with multiple CPUs?

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama. Occurs frequently, Fatal Error.

2009-02-18 Thread Reuben Firmin
FWIW, I switched to Twinview and (obviously) the problem hasn't
reoccurred. I had an aversion to Twinview in the past (based on
instability last time I tried it, years ago, I think) but it's stable
(and, bonus, gives me full KDE4 bling, which xinerama was somehow
blocking.)

[Bug 331084] [NEW] [jaunty] Navigation very slow

2009-02-18 Thread valiadown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

i chose 'view new folders using: List View' and 'Arange items : By Name' in my
Preferences.
and i chose 'Tree' (tree-view) in the left frame

if i want open folders just as /usr/bin or /usr/lib, by means a click on
asterisk at left of /usr/lib or /usr/bin in the left frame, then i've to wait
three minutes :) In left frame, is write 'loading' during these three minutes.
during this time, the foot painted black color at the top right is immobile and
my cpu (duo core 2.2GHz) remains at 100%.

if i chose 'view new folders using: Icon View' in my Preferences, then
that process end more quickly.

[Bug 331083] [NEW] Totem opens files in reverse order with gvfs

2009-02-18 Thread Guillaume Pratte
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

1- Mount a remote share with MP3 files (with SSH)
2- In Nautilus select all mp3 files in a given directory on the remote file
3- Right-click on one of them and click Open with Video player (Totem)

Result : the playlist is loaded in reverse alphabetical order.
Consequence : we cannot open an album to listen because tracks are listed in
reverse order.
Word-around : open the directory containing the files (right-click on folder
and select open with)

With local files, files are loaded in the correct order. This reverse
order behavior is observed only with remote files.

Applies to Ubuntu 8.10.

[Bug 331082] [NEW] please sync jaunty ecryptfs kernel module with linus' git tree

2009-02-18 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

Tim-

Please sync Jaunty's ecryptfs kernel module with Linus' upstream git
tree.

There are some errors in dmesg that Tyler believes are fixed with the upstream
code. The messages on my system look like this:
[   46.330479] ecryptfs_parse_tag_70_packet: max_packet_size is [56]; real
packet size is [51]
[   46.330486] ecryptfs_decode_and_decrypt_filename: Could not parse tag 70
packet from filename; copying through filename as-is

I'm attaching a patch from Tyler.

This is for spot-check review only! I think it will be in our best
interest for you to do the sync via git merging mechanisms.

Thanks,
:-Dustin

[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down

2009-02-18 Thread Jeff Burns
Further report confirming that as of Jaunty Alpha 3 (upgraded from Alpha
2 directly rather than from the liveCD) things are good for this bug on
my HP/Compaq F763NR laptop (with MCP67 rev a2 chipset). Currently
running Alpha4 and it's still good, and the Alpha4 CD boots OK. I'm
now at kernel 2.6.28-7, although as I write this, it's updating to
2.6.28-8... AND 2.6.28-8 just booted ok as well. I'm pretty close to
upgrading my primary work partition from Intrepid to Jaunty primarily to
get rid of this annoyance. If nothing else, it's a real headache when
explaining to doubtful buddies how Ubuntu Linux is absolutely ready for
General Purpose office usage, and then I had to hold a key down during
boot... Generates serious eyerolls from them and some embarrassment
for me... Perception is everything unfortunately, even if this is minor
bug it generates an immediate negative impression for newbs before the
desktop has even come up, and that colours the whole out of box
experience. I'm so glad to see it fixed for my hardware combination!

I've had good luck with kernels:
2.6.28-6
2.6.28-7
2.6.28-8

[Bug 330910] Re: png generation fails when /var/log/bootchart does not exist

2009-02-18 Thread amedee
Hello Scott,
Thank you for your reaction.

I disagree that the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) explicitly does
not permit /var/log to be on a tmpfs.

Grepping on tmpfs and on tmp in the current version (2.3) of the FHS
gives the following results:

ame...@intrepid { ~ }$ curl http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.txt.gz -s |
zgrep tmpfs
ame...@intrepid { ~ }$ curl http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.txt.gz -s |
zgrep tmp
/tmp : Temporary files
/var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots
tmp   Temporary files
/tmp : Temporary files
The /tmp directory must be made available for programs that require temporary
Programs must not assume that any files or directories in /tmp are preserved
Although data stored in /tmp may be deleted in a site-specific manner, it
is recommended that files and directories located in /tmp be deleted
/usr/tmp - /var/tmp
tmp Temporary files preserved between system reboots
wtmp record of all logins and logouts
The utmp file, which stores information about who is currently using the
/var/tmp : Temporary files preserved between system reboots
The /var/tmp directory is made available for programs that require temporary
stored in /var/tmp is more persistent than data in /tmp.
Files and directories located in /var/tmp must not be deleted when the system
is booted. Although data stored in /var/tmp is typically deleted in a
interval than /tmp.

I also read the FHS 2.3 in great detail.

According to my reading and understanding of the FHS 2.3,
  the following directories inside /var *must* be _preserved_ between reboots:
/var/cache
/var/tmp
  the following directories inside /var *should* be _preserved_ between reboots:
/var/lib
  the following directories inside /var *must* be _removed_ between reboots:
/var/run

FHS does not explicitly say anything about /var/log being preserved
between reboots, so storing /var/log on a tmpfs is not explicitly
forbidden by the FHS and therefor it is allowed.

I can understand that you disagree with me that this issue ought to be
fixed, but according to my reading of the published FHS you cannot use
it as an argument.

I am, however, open for every other argument against this fix.
