[Bug 213494] Re: Glipper dies when desktop starting
Right. So now I had another crash :( Happened after my notebook did not properly wake up after suspend because of lack of power. I then had to do a normal boot and glipper crashed after log in to GNOME. So it's about one crash for maybe 4 times booting. My log file says the crash happened right after the first message. So the error must happen between Trying to start glipper... and while not ready: try: import gobject gobject.threads_init() import gtk, gnomeapplet, gnome ready = True Logical next step is to make one debug line per code. We'll then be able to tell where it crashes if there is only one place in the code or at least know that there are many lines that make it crash or different situations. My log is attached. Crash happened at 2009-06-12T15:23:11.300143 I will provide a more verbose version in a while. [Bug 80900] Re: problems resolving fully qualified domain names in environments where .local is used as a TLD
This bug is causing a lot of problems. As the avahi-daemon is enabled by default, you need a great deal of knowledge to know what is going on here. For instance, our Microsoft network in the office uses the popular .local pseudo domain. When connected to the VPN: ping server - Works fine ping server.ourdomain.local - Times out. When in the office, and on the local LAN, I can't resolve .local hostnames at all when using actual services (i.e. SSH, ping etc). To compound things, lookups using dig, host or nslookup commands all work fine. Thereby confusing me even further. If I do: sudo /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon stop Magically, FQDN lookups work again. It took me a long time to find this out :) FQDN lookups on .local domains are essential to a lot of people who use a Microsoft network and DNS servers. What about people connecting via a VPN? The avahi-daemon will start before the VPN connection, so detecting a '.local' domain at that point wouldn't help. Changing the line to: hosts: files dns mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] mdns4 Works! Can this be the default,...and, can it be put into a Jaunty patch? Think it will help out a lot of people thanks, Chris -- problems resolving fully qualified domain names in environments where .local is used as a TLD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 371298] Re: WiFi connection not restablished after having suspended in a MacBook pro.
What version Macbook Pro do you have? You can determine this by running: % sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name It should tell you something like: Macbook3,1. This is important because different version of the Macbooks have different Wi-Fi adapters. For instance, the new unibody Macbook Pros use a Broadcom chipset, whereas the previous generation used Atheros Wi- Fi. You also might want to check the community documentation for your model. I think that this is more general. The applications gvfs-gphoto2-vo, notify-osd and again gvfa-gphoto2-vo produced corrupted page table messages. Public bug reported: When I close Firefox, it often does not terminate entirely. When I start Firefox again, I often get this error: ``Firefox cannot use the profile default because it is in use. This sounds similar to an issue that I commonly have, only it's not reliably producible and affects the entire desktop. In my instance, compiz will stop updating any window on the screen, until I move the cube or move the window. This usually starts working after a force kill of compiz and a restart of compiz. This seems to be related to compiz's rendering system, where it gets caught in a loop/segfault somewhere, although I haven't done any debugging to narrow down the problem. [Bug 141641] Re: installing lsb requires postfix
This was discussed several times already (also see upstream bug). One workaround is to only depend on a particular lsb submodule. However, the entire idea of requiring an MTA is pretty impractical. A cripped MTA like nullmailer would basically just send mails to /dev/null, and a real MTA like postfix is a potential security hole. The actual flaw here is that it encourages applications to rely on being able to send local mail, forget about it, and assume that the user actually read it. ** Bug watch added: bugs.linuxbase.org/ #2407 http://bugs.linuxbase.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2407 ** Also affects: lsb via http://bugs.linuxbase.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2407 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Changed in: lsb (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium = Wishlist ** Changed in: lsb (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged -- installing lsb requires postfix https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/141641 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 386366] [NEW] Video Problems
Public bug reported: I like Xubuntu. I tried it on several computers but ran into a video problem. There is no support for Widescreen monitors. I installed it on my Netbook with a 9 inch screen. Normally I run 1024x600 display resolution with Ubuntu. When I installed Xubuntu it seemed to work, but... When I click on the Settings Manger, the button that says 'Close' if below the bottom of the screen. You can't click on the button or move the window higher. The only way to close the window is to click the X at the upper right of the screen and quit without saving any changes. The Settings Manager wasn't the only program that had this problem. I had a similar problem on a laptop with a 14 inch screen. When I run with 800x600 resolution, the 'Close' button is also below the bottom of the screen. There is no possible way to click on it. I didn't have this problem at 1024x768 resolution. It seems like Xubuntu does not support screen resolutions less than 1024x768. Bummer. [Bug 385797] Re: Generic text-only printer does not work
* debian/local/text.convs: Turn all text input formats to text/plain at a high cost, so that the text-only printer (which accepts only text/plain) accepts them (LP: #385797). I don't understand what's so costly about dumping text input straight to the printer. There shouldn't be anything required to do that. If we're whitelisting things, I think that there must be a better way. For starters, we could identify source code correctly, with a MIME type of text/x-csource instead of application/x-csource. The latter implies that the source code may or may not be binary, when it isn't, it's source code, which _is_ plain text, not something that is costly to turn _into_ plain text. Seems like a decent stop-gap for the time being, but maybe another bug should be opened to detect formats correctly according to their major type (text, image, application, etc.)? It also looks like the problem might be that CUPS wants to turn it into PDF as per /usr/share/cups/mime/texttopdf.convs, which contains: Ubuntu Jaunty:[0-17/10295-0]:mime cat texttopdf.convs application/x-cshellapplication/pdf 0 texttopdf application/x-csource application/pdf 0 texttopdf application/x-perl application/pdf 0 texttopdf application/x-shell application/pdf 0 texttopdf text/plain application/pdf 0 texttopdf text/html application/pdf 0 texttopdf I don't see a PPD for my C500 printer (the one that is plain-text only). [Bug 382844] Re: parley - written practice - break not auto by width
Is this KDE 4.1? Using 4.2.4 the QLabel actually scales up (meaning the whole window scales really) to include the whole phrase, though, there is only so much space on one's screen so it is almost bound to exceed the available space with somewhat long vocabulary phrases. So, even though the issue as original described is not valid anymore, there is a related new one. IMHO the window should either not scale at all, but use a wordWrap on the QLabel, or it should scale to the point where it is out of space and then apply wordWrap if the vocabulary still doesn't fit in. I also have to mention that this probably is not the primary design concern of Parley though, in general the UI is not tweaked towards long phrases but probably single words or a short word group at best. ** Changed in: kdeedu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: kdeedu (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Also affects: kdeedu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- parley - written practice - break not auto by width https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 348546] Re: Sound Converter puts output files in the wrong folder, even overwriting files
This happened to me too, but it was because I chose a custom filename pattern for the output file. The path prefix for that option is set to the folder you choose to open, instead of the corresponding subfolder for each file. The overwriting also happened, because I had files without metadata (title=unknown) and the output filename ended up being the same for several different input files. I think I should at least have got a warning that it was about to overwrite the files. So, maybe this was your problem too? [Bug 141641] Re: installing lsb requires postfix
Thanks for the hint, Jeff. I have now run sudo apt-get install ssmtp and postfix got smoothly replaced by ssmtp, without lsb or any package from OpenPrinting being uninstalled. Having a look at the files contained in ssmtp with dpkg -L ssmtp shows that there is no daemon (No file in /etc/init.d/). Now the only problem is that we must make the use of ssmtp automatic, so that postfix does not get installed when a user tries to install an LSB package, especially a manufacturer-supplied printer driver. First, ssmtp needs top be moved into main, a MIR (Main Inclusion Request) needs to be posted. In addition it needs to be added to the CDs, but it is very small: t...@till-laptop:~/printing/openprinting/website$ dpkg -p ssmtp | grep -i size Installed-Size: 8 Size: 54436 t...@till-laptop:~/printing/openprinting/website$ ls -l /var/cache/apt/archives/ssmtp_2.62-3ubuntu1_amd64.deb -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 54436 2009-05-04 23:07 /var/cache/apt/archives/ssmtp_2.62-3ubuntu1_amd64.deb t...@till-laptop:~/printing/openprinting/website$ Perhaps one can even remove postfix from the desktop CDs (if it is there). Re: [Bug 381333] Re: when WRITE program is selected during auto save, the text highlight does not work.
I finally had the same situation with the 3.0 software fresh off the press. The bug still exists. If the program window is selected while the auto-backup is in progress. The select/drag release aspect of the left mouse button does not cause the background of the displayed text to change color. (the text is selected however, and can be copied and pasted) In my case, I selected it and then hit ctrl+C to copy and cntrl+B** to search, the non indicated but selected material appeared in the search window and when I moved down to the replace with line and pasted, the clipboard contents were the same. ** I filed a separate error report: The default keyboard shortcut table for the Spanish interface is wrong. Search is triggered by F for find as in English instead of B for Buscar as is claimed in the note on the dropdown menu, and B gives bold as well as N giving Negreta. I just went to the shortcut list and fixed my copy, but the default list should be corrected. Thanks and good luck. [Bug 49127] Re: Long file names are truncated without warning
I am experiencing the same issue in Jaunty. I burnt a CD for a friend who uses Windows and the file names were truncated to ~4-5 chars when viewing in Windows - I have not been able to drop it back in a *nix box to see if its the same here. I was unaware of the file name changes until my friend asked me how to tell what the file names really were; confused, I asked to see. Sure enough, the file names had been shortened to about the first word of the file name. I can understand truncating where needed, even without a 'real warning', but it seems that truncating to a set max length would be more beneficial - at least more identifying information is available to decipher the previous file name... In any case - I love using Brasero and will keep on using... [Bug 347269] Re: No graphical distinction between WEP and WPA encrypted networks
What do you suggest? An differing icon could be misleading... For instance, if you used two lock icons for WPA vs. one for WEP, the AP admin could still have set a weak passphrase... Also, is this a real use case? Do you every go somewhere and choose an available WPA access point over an available WEP access point? I usually go some where and look for an AP I know about, or if I'm in a new place, ask someone which AP to use, and they usually give me a key or passphrase if required. -- No graphical distinction between WEP and WPA encrypted networks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/347269 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 204536] Re: sound volume always resets to 100% after reboot
A bit more user-experience info here: I have several accounts and it auto-boots into one on startup, lets call user1. The volume control is set to 10% and muted if: - If the box is shutdown using the shutdown menu option from this user (user1) - If I login (user GUI menu) as second user (user2) then go back to user1's session I noticed user2's volume settings are normally saved, non-muted and intro music is heard. I recall user1's intro music used to sound too but no longer since always muted. The volume settings for user1 are maintained if I issue a cmd-line shutdown and on subsequent reboot the volume settings are as I left them for user1. Neither user1 or 2 are 'admin' users. user1 has very restrictive access to the computer resources (as per GUI settings for users). There seems to be some 'bleeding' between user sessions and switching between them... as user1 is used to run xbox-media-centre and not much else... user2 is the user allowed to ftp new stuff to the media-station which is done occasionally. user1 auto-boots up when the machine is started and launches XBMC. -- sound volume always resets to 100% after reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204536 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 353910] Re: KDE Speech is truncated
If it is the combination phonon+xine that is causing this issue, maybe changing to gstreamer would help, otherwise it might be a general phonon issue, or what ktts sends to phonon (granted I don't know anything about the inner workings of ktts though :)). Please install the package phonon-backend-gstreamer and try if this fixes the issue (you can change to gstreamer via systemsettings - multimedia - backend ... you also might have to re-login). ** Changed in: kdeaccessibility (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Incomplete -- KDE Speech is truncated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdeaccessibility in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 365329] Re: HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04
Hi Till, I have the printer ready to be installed on a different computer as I noticed it is still not printing without any interaction from me (e.g. it's still not plug and play). Are there any steps/logs you'd like me to follow/produce or would you just like me to plug it in, turn it on, increase the verbosity of the cups log, try and print a job and then send you the error_log? The only reason I hesitate is because the printer doesn't even have the spools spinning, as if it's not even receiving the commands from cups, so I'm not sure how much will show in the error_log. -- HP LaserJet P1005 (using hplip) fails to print in 8.04 and 9.04 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/365329 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
