[Bug 417865] [NEW] Digital output dies after awhile on Kubuntu Karmic with HDA Intel

2009-08-23 Thread Toni Helenius
Public bug reported:

I used Kubuntu Jaunty 64. This weekend I lost sound because of unknown
reason. I didn't change anything. I was frustrated and upgraded to the
development release Karmic. It at least gives me an error message about
the lack of sound. The sound works correctly in Windows.

Hardware:
Intel MB with Intel HDA STAC92xx (from KDE System Settings - Multimedia)
Hooked to an amplifier with optical cable (S/PDIF)

Problem:
YouTube, Kaffeine, VLC eventually (like after 1min of usage) break the output.
I get system notification that Phonon failed to use the digital output and fell
back to the analog. After that, I don't get any sounds from applications and
system. Suprisingly Amarok still plays music, even after I restart it after the
breakage...

[Bug 408587] Re: Super key not working unless shift pressed on Toshiba Portege

I think the problem might be that you have a keyboard shortcut assigned
directly to the super key. In my case I accidently assigned mute to the
the super key under system > preferences > keyboard shortcuts. Check to
see that you don't have anything assigned to super. Let me know if this
helps!

[Bug 55646] Re: video playback problem on external monitor

2009-08-23 Thread Blondielocks
I need help:

Quote Flametrees:

"By typing xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v -1

My problem is solved. Admittedly (again as discussed above) the Laptop
screen goes blank, but this doesn't bother me; as the intention is to
watch Movies & TV Shows on the LCD TV. When finished, I just type:

 xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1"

I received the same error message when I tried:

 xvattr -a XV_SWITCHCRT -v 1

but for me the alternative:

xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v -1

does not work either. Terminal says:

Found Xv 2.2 XV_CRTC set to -1

but still shows videos on internal and not external monitor.

Any ideas?

[Bug 229516] Re: graphviz crashes with segmentation fault

2009-08-23 Thread Martin Olsson
I tried it on karmic-as-of-23rd-aug now and it works (the syntax error
is just a missing "}" in the end). After I fixed the syntax error I
could run the command with no SEGV and the generated .gif shows a nice
graph when opened in eog. Either bug has been fixed or maybe (very
unlikely) it only repros on kubuntu (I have 64-bit with GNOME only).

[Bug 415860] Re: [Wish list] please enable the blue background on grub2

2009-08-23 Thread Colin Watson
I turned this off deliberately, because on systems where the default
text mode doesn't extend all the way to the edges of the monitor (quite
common) it can look really ugly to emphasise this by having a blue
background.

[Bug 417858] [NEW] [Karmic] LS-120 support busted badly

2009-08-23 Thread seasoned_geek
Public bug reported:

Prior to the round of updates which broke kpackagekit, my LS-120 was
working perfectly. I would stick in a superfloppy, it would spin a few
seconds, the "plugged in device" window would open, I would click on the
device, Dolphin would open up and display the files and directories on
the media.

Now, Dolphin hangs when I stick in a superfloppy. Sometimes just the
grey window, other times I get the internal white window, but no menu or
icons. The system basically hangs. Somethings will continue to
function, but not the main KUbuntu launch menu. You are definitely in a
reboot situation.

Drive works fine with a 1.44 floppy.

Someone broke something pretty bad with some ATAPI upgrade and Dolphin
cannot handle it. I deliberately applied ALL patches and rebooted, then
re-tested before filing this bug on 08-23-2009. There is quite a large
pool of us who still use the LS-120, mostly we are authors. We use them
for revolving and off-site backups. No, CD-RW is not better. We know
what works for us.

[Bug 416772] Re: [karmic] please add config option for 'set gfxpayload' to /etc/default/grub

2009-08-23 Thread Colin Watson
We probably oughtn't to expose this to any significant number of users
until said kernel issue is resolved. For details, see:

  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2009-August/006773.html

Note that there are more configuration files available than just
/etc/default/grub, although they're harder work to edit (that's why
/etc/default/grub exists, with the easy options), so you do have a
workaround available: you can edit /etc/grub.d/10_linux, look for the
linux_entry function definition, and add whatever gfxpayload line you
like just before the "linux ${rel_dirname}/..." line.

[Bug 269539] Re: Three-way merge issues with menu.lst file during kernel updates: "Conflicts found! Please edit `/var/run/grub/menu.lst' and sort them out manually."

2009-08-23 Thread Colin Watson
grub2 handles configuration in a completely different way; it's
extremely unlikely that anyone would encounter this particular problem
with it. We'll still have to support grub for Karmic and probably beyond
for upgrades, so this bug is *not* closeable just because we're now
using grub2 by default, but I'm not sure that it's worth putting lots of
energy into it since we already know it's a hideous can of worms. For
9.10 and beyond I'd advise affected users to migrate to GRUB 2.

[Bug 39328] Re: Disable scrolling on window list to flip through windows

2009-08-23 Thread oliwek
I don't know why, but after having applied your patch, if I use the
scroll wheel with the mouse cursor located on an empty space on the
desktop, this no longer switches from desktop 1 to desktop 2 (as was the
case before) ; I can't see what I could have done myself to disable this
feature...

[Bug 308631] Re: creating domain in virt-manager freezes system

2009-08-23 Thread Daanemanz
I'm still experiencing this problem with Jaunty. Any information on this
bug? It's getting really annoying as I would like to use virt-manager a
lot more, only if it wouldn't freeze my system so randomly.

It not only happens when creating a domain for a virtual machine, but
also when I start a random virtual machine, and even then it's pretty
random (sometimes it freezes the system, sometimes it don't).

[Bug 412437] Re: /boot/grub/menu.lst does not exist

2009-08-23 Thread Colin Watson
It doesn't show the menu because you didn't read my posting to ubuntu-
devel-announce ;-) In general you should be subscribed to ubuntu-devel-
announce if you're running a development release.

  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-
announce/2009-August/000599.html

There are already other bugs filed about this, and I'll be making things
a bit more graceful before 9.10 releases, I hope.

kgrubeditor clearly needs to be fixed to cope with GRUB 2. This is not
GRUB 2's fault. It'll need more than just a filename change - the whole
menu structure is different now.

[Bug 368973] Re: Volume control doesn't lower subwoofer volume on a Dell Inspiron 9300

2009-08-23 Thread dr denn
so this seemed to work for me.

click on the 'volume control' icon, then the 'volume control' button.

click 'preferences' and check 'master mono'

by sliding the master mono the subwoofer volume changes independently of
the front speakers. it's a little annoying if you ever adjust it, but
this seems to be working for me now.

[Bug 417209] Re: 9.10 Alpha 4 has no grub.cfg after install

2009-08-23 Thread Colin Watson
update-grub is just a thin wrapper around grub-mkconfig, as is
documented in 'man update-grub'; you can use grub-mkconfig to write the
configuration file to some different place.

GRUB 1 was never really declared stable, and GRUB 2 is not yet entirely
ready for a 2.0 release, hence the version number. We're going with GRUB
2 a little early for various reasons.

First time Ubuntu users should not be installing Karmic right now, since
it's still in development. :-) However, since you are, could you please
attach /var/log/installer/syslog to this bug? That may give us a clue
about what went wrong with your installation.

[Bug 417209] Re: 9.10 Alpha 4 has no grub.cfg after install

2009-08-23 Thread Colin Watson
If you don't have a /var/log/installer/syslog to attach, then please
describe *in as much detail as you can* what state your machine was in
before you started the installation, and exactly which options you
selected during installation. Your goal here is to give us enough
information that we can set up a test environment to replicate your
problem, since this is not a problem that showed up during our own
testing.

[Bug 368895] Re: gitosis not working after upgrade to 9.04

2009-08-23 Thread Evan Broder
I've tested all 3 of my debdiffs; they all work, although the first one
has some issues with installing into site-packages instead of dist-
packages - I've noticed that, while running the actual gitosis scripts
works, `python -m gitosis` does not.

The reason I can't do s/site-packages/dist-packages/ and
s/python2.5/python2.6/ is because of the bug I linked (bug #362570).
Doing `python setup.py install --prefix=blah` with Python 2.6, it
installs into /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages instead of dist-packages,
which makes everything unhappy. I wouldn't have expected that to matter
once python-support gets into the picture (since it moves the modules
out of /usr/lib and into /usr/share/python-support/$PACKAGE), but I'll
admit that I'm not entirely clear on how pysupport works.

But both
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/30697473/gitosis_0.2%2B20080825-2ubuntu0.1.debdiff
and
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/30699699/gitosis_0.2%2B20080825-2ubuntu0.1.debdiff
definitely work. I would be fine with either being uploaded.

corrupted.

The message:

can be seen after that.

Rendering xvid4 fails with the same error messages, except that the lame
and libxvid are reported to be unrecognized and ignored.

[Bug 347711] Re: Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller Unstable on Jaunty

2009-08-23 Thread Ben
I had been having this problem too w/ an Asus M3A78-EMH (780G)
motherboard ever since the switch from Intrepid to Janunty. I switched
to 2.6.31-999-generic #200908211846 from the mainline kernel repository
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds) a couple of days ago
and haven't had any more problems. I've transferred at least 100gig of
data so far...So if you're having this issue, make the switch, although
I had to patch fglrx to get it to build correctly.

crash.

Refiling against -nvidia as per comment #20.
