Bah I discovered an APT bug which prevented the preferences file (the
APT policy really) to be taken into account; see bug #442082 when it's
marked public.

[Bug 441161] Re: [karmic] Dell Inspiron 9400 / IWL4965 - Wireless is disabled

2009-10-04 Thread Sam Vilain
I just saw another amd64 machine show the same problem - network manager
just not wanting to control interfaces, even hard-wired. Again I had to
revert to /etc/network/interfaces. The network manager daemon was
running. I'm nominating this for release, because it seems serious to
me.

The acpi-support package doesn't implement suspending on lid close, it

[Bug 442081] [NEW] Loop device with root filesystem cannot be unmounted during shutdown

2009-10-04 Thread RichardN
Public bug reported:

Have installed ubuntu 9.04 using wubi (put wubi.exe and iso in same directory
to install).
Upgraded to 9.10 karmic development branch using update-manager -d.

Upgrade went fine, but when system is now shutdown, shutdown procedure hangs.
The problem is that the loop device cannot unmount the device that is running
my root disk (20G image mounted on loop device).
Pressing ctrl-alt-del produces two more shutdown messages. One is about
deactivating swap.but that one does not succeed either...

So problem is in kernel / loop device or the shutdown order..which
is configured in either the kernel or some shutdown script?

[Bug 442084] [NEW] Accessing a panel's properties menu can be needlessly difficult

2009-10-04 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

The GNOME Documentation Library says, To modify the properties of a
panel, right-click on a vacant space on the panel, then choose
Properties.. Now that would be fine if you could guarantee that there
is vacant space somewhere on a panel. :P

If the panel's hide buttons and expand mode are both turned off, then
even deleting items from the panel may not expose any vacant space!

I feel that the panel properties ought to be accessible from each
applet's context menu.

[Bug 27287] Re: external firewire sbp2 login timeout

2009-10-04 Thread Stefan Richter
PS:
Here is an article about the inner workings of Drobo and what this implies for
its support by Linux (not FireWire-specific):
http://groups.google.com/group/drobo-talk/web/linux-support?hl=en
Due to Drobo and DroboPro firmware limitations, it is currently impractical to
use a logical unit size larger than the default 2.0 TiB under Linux:
http://groups.google.com/group/drobo-talk/browse_thread/thread/34f08da1708d2f7b
I.e. if you have more than 2 TB net disk space built into the Drobo or
DroboPro, it needs to be exposed to Linux as a 2nd and perhaps 3rd logical unit
indeed.

[Bug 442070] Re: incorrect visualization of mpg video captured from DVB-S card

2009-10-04 Thread ubuntista
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: totem

- Totem does not well visualize any of my several .mpg video that are
recordings from a DVB-S card (Skystar 2).
+ I have a lot of .mpg videos that are recordings from a DVB-S card (Skystar 2)
taken in Win XP with ProgDVB in the last years.
+ Totem does not well visualize any of these files.
What Totem shows is like a variation of meaningless big pixels, the sound is
good.
The files are MPEG2 transport streams.

Same bug is in Karmic beta.

  Other considerations:
VLC 1.02 in Karmic beta works well on these files but VLC 0.9.9a in Jaunty
doesn't (black screen) .

The problem could be in the Gstreamer framework because the same exact
problem happens with Moovida and Pitivi applications that also use Gstreamer
like Totem does.

The Openshot video editor, that instead uses the MLT framework, works
  well on the same files.

  ProblemType: Bug
  Architecture: i386
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
  ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/totem-gstreamer
  Package: totem-gstreamer 2.26.1-0ubuntu5
  ProcEnviron:
   LANG=it_IT.UTF-8
   SHELL=/bin/bash

[Bug 419054] Re: kdeinit4: plasma-desktop takes 60-90% of CPU

2009-10-04 Thread Laurent Claessens
I also have View of a directory (the one which is by default). This one does
not seem to pose problem.
If my X goes again to 60% without the Note, I will try to remove the view of
a directory and putting back the Note.

Since I don't know how to trigger the bug, I'm forced to test each
combination separately and wait some hours before to be sure if a
combination works or not.

[Bug 442090] [NEW] [Karmic Beta] Computer freezes when moving Firefox 3.5.3 to another workspace

2009-10-04 Thread Detlef Lechner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I run Window Selector to move Firefox 3.5.3 to another workspace. This made my
computer to freeze. I could only move the mouse cursor. But clicking on any
button has no effect. Ctrl+Alt+F1 has no effect. Alt+SysRq+K produced a black
display screen.
'~$ uname -a; Linux T43 2.6.31-11-generic #38-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 2 11:55:55 UTC

'~$ apt-cache policy xorg

  Version table:

I expected to happen that Window Selector moves Firefox 3.5.3 to the
neighboring workspace.
Instead the computer froze with the exception of the mouse cursor.
The virtual console shows a line render error detected, EIR: 0x0010.

[Bug 441810] Re: Still recommends Add/Remove in Internet section

2009-10-04 Thread Matthew East
Connor, thank for the patch. In order to keep the number of strings
changed to a minimum I've removed the alternative explanation about how
to use software-center where apt urls are already provided (removing
strings doesn't affect translators, whereas changing them does). But
otherwise I've used your patch and committed it.

[Bug 433701] Re: services-admin should be disabled

2009-10-04 Thread John Baptist
Has anyone seen the services GUI used by Fedora? It's pretty nice, much
better than services-admin. I don't know if it works with upstart, but
if so, maybe we could just use that. (It is open source, after all.)

What always bothered me about services-admin is that it wasn't
comprehensive. It was hard-coded for some particular services, rather
than providing a general interface for manipulating any services the
user may have installed. I hope its replacement is more general.

[Bug 442102] [NEW] Intel HDA: no sound on several laptops

2009-10-04 Thread KennyM
Public bug reported:

There is no sound playback on three laptops using Ubuntu Karmic Beta: A Compaq
6720s, an (older) Siemsens Fujitsu Amilo Pro, and a very new Sony Vaio
VGN-FW31ZJ.
On all three laptops, there was sound with Ubuntu Jaunty, including all updates
until approx Oct, 1st.

When headphones pluged in, the sound worked (on the headphones), but I
felt that there was only medium quality (noise etc.).

I found somewhere in an older post that adding the option snd-hda-intel
model=mitac to the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf solved the problem,
so i tried and it worked for all laptops! (ALL with model=mitac).

[Bug 442101] [NEW] Gnome Application Windows Aren't Centered When Opening

2009-10-04 Thread DasFox
Public bug reported:

Since the beginning of Linux many applications you open are not being
centered on the desktop and I see this has still not been improved 100%
on the various desktops/window managers...

As long as Linux has been around you would think that someone had
developed a way to keep all applications centered on the desktop when
you open them.

I do not know if this has been any area of concern for the Ubuntu team
but from what I have seen in other distros it looks like Ubuntu has been
possibly doing something here, or maybe it's coming from Gnome
development, but it's nice to finally see applications opening up on the
center of the desktop at least on Gnome, I can't say what the other
desktops are like in Karmic right now, I'm only using Gnome.

But in Gnome running under Karmic right now there are still applications
that do not center when opening them and it would be great if they all
did.

Without having to make a long list here of all the applications I see
that do not center themselves on the desktop when you open them I just
ask that the developers spend the time to somehow develop Gnome so that
all applications that are opened will be centered on the desktop.

I truly believe and I hope others out there do, that part of a polished
desktop is having applications open consistently and in the same place,
not sporadically all over the place at different times.

[Bug 427782] Re: ubuntu karmic development kernel does not include patch to enable buttons on stylus for the N-Trig digitizer

2009-10-04 Thread Marc Nieper-Wißkirchen
The N-trig digitizer is being built into more and more tablets/notebooks
(Dell Latitude XT, Latitude XT2, HP TouchSmart TX2, Lenovo Thinkpad
T400s and X200t, etc.). There is no reason why Ubuntu shouldn't work out
of the box with all these notebooks.

Using the mainline daily kernels is not really an option for those who
expect their Ubuntu to work without installing additional deb archives
and for those who need the patched Ubuntu kernels (as opposed to
mainline kernels) for some other reason.

Thus I strongly vote for including the bug fix in the Ubuntu kernel.
Also because the patch has been in use for some time now (including a
couple of Ubuntu users) and I am not aware of any complaints about it.

[Bug 368833] Re: Ctrl+Q after upgrade fails to ask for confirmation, loses user session

2009-10-04 Thread Muelli
I can reproduce this problem. Although it has nothing to do with
upgrades.

Simply open a fresh firefox instance (firefox -no-remote -P), hit Ctrl+T a
couple of times to have open tabs. Press Ctrl+Q, hit the dont ask next time
checkbox, Save and Quit.
Then open this profile again, see the Tabs coming up, hit Ctrl+Q again, see the
browser closing itself w/o asking.

There is no chance to make firefox ask whether to really quit or not.
That's annoying, especially when you have a large download going on. I'm
talking about Firefox 3.0.14 here.

Related bugs seem to be
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419009 and
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422040.

Funny enough, when browser.startup.page is set to 1, it'll show the
question box. Totally confusing to me. I expected it to show the
confirmation question even if browser.startup.page is set to 3.

[Bug 437445] Re: No Wired Network Connection: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)

2009-10-04 Thread ERCLNG
I can confirm that the problem exists on latest beta I downloaded on Sat
Oct 3. My Acer Aspire 6930G can see both network card (wired and
wireless) fine on 9.04 but not on 9.10.

9.04 sees the cards as:

07:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100
09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. L1e Gigabit Ethernet
Adapter (rev b0)

I don't know if it makes a difference but 9.10 ISO is 64bit whereas 9.04

[Bug 437445] Re: No Wired Network Connection: Attansic Technology Corp. Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller (rev b0)

2009-10-04 Thread ERCLNG
Hmm... perhaps I posted on the wrong bug. For me 9.10 does not see the
ethernet adapters while 9.04 does. It's my first Ubuntu installation for
desktop so I am not familiar with network managers and all. To me it
appears as if the driver has problems.

[Bug 442111] [NEW] Should mention file size limit of FAT32

2009-10-04 Thread Gabor Kelemen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/windows/C/preparing-storage.html#preparing-
storage-removable

This section recommends using FAT32:

For use on removable devices, the best supported filesystem for Ubuntu
is FAT (also called FAT32 or vfat).

It might be worth mentioning that these have a 4 Gb file size limit -
nowadays, files bigger than this size are not so extremely rare. If one
has problems transferring these, he might consider some other options.

** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

My system keyboard layout as defined in /etc/default/console-setup is
