[Bug 38442] Re: Ubiquity dialogues too large for 800x600 display

2009-10-05 Thread Kevin Hunter
I believe this is only partially fixed. I'm able to install, but during
the actual installation of Karmic (when the window title is "Installing
system" and files are actually copied/configured), the bottom of the
window is not visible. For instance, is there a Cancel button there if
I need to quit for some reason? It's perhaps minor because at the point
one is installing Ubuntu, they've probably not going to change their
mind just then, but from a UI point of view, it's disconcerting not to
be able to see/interact with the entire window.

So, to be clear, I believe this bug is still open as of Tue, 06 Oct
2009, with the Karmic beta.

My current screen resolution is 800x600: see attachment for visual.

[Bug 414795] Re: PC beep no longer works in Karmic alpha4

2009-10-05 Thread duanedesign
This is the gconf setting i mentioned in my previous post. I am posting
it here for convenience and in hopes that it helps.

run gconf-editor from terminal and set
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode
to 'off' rather than 'on'

Of course you would do the opposite to turn the sound on.

Good Luck

[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2009-10-05 Thread duanedesign
pcspkr is blacklisted and i am not receiving the 'annoying' system beep.
However i am not getting any beep at all. Gnome Alert sound has not taken over
this job. I can go into System > Preferences > Sound and 'Choose an alert
sound' and when I click on the sound I can hear it, but it does not happen
during normal use.
I am finding that Terminator is flashing to give me a visual clue.
Gnome-terminal however is not giving me this visual indicator.

Thank you to everyone who has worked on the 100 paper cuts, on their own
they are small changes, together they make a huge difference.

[Bug 316806] Re: package acpi-support 0.114-0intrepid1 failed to install/upgrade: package acpi-support is already installed and configured

2009-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

It is not a bug in acpi-support if the package is configured but the
package manager tries to configure it again; this is either a bug in the
package manager, or an inconsistency in your dpkg database.

Several bugs in dpkg that fit this description have been fixed in recent
releases, so I think this bug can reasonably be considered closed. If
you are still having problems installing packages, please feel free to
reopen this report and provide more information.

After spending many hours trying various suggestions to get sound, I finally
tried the following
If All Else Fails...
By default, Ubuntu uses ALSA to communicate with sound hardware and uses
PulseAudio as a sound server.
If you've followed the troubleshooting guide(s), and still don't have your
audio working properly consider replacing ALSA

[Bug 320429] Re: Doesn't recover from suspend or hibernate.

It appears you're using the binary-only fglrx driver, which as I
understand it doesn't support suspend/resume properly. So I'm not sure
there's anything that can be done about this, but I'll at least reassign
it to the pm-utils package which handles suspend/resume quirks for
further triaging.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Could you please generate an apport
crash report for this?
You can enable apport for one instance like this:
sudo force_start=1 /etc/init.d/apport restart

I am marking this invalid as apport will open a new bug when the crash
is generated. If it does not, you can reset the status of this one to
New and we will try something else.

[Bug 375849] Re: Thinkpad X200s HDD shuts down despite AC connection

2009-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

Please post the output of the following command, for both the on-battery
and on-AC cases:

  sudo hdparm -i /dev/sda | grep AdvancedPM=yes

How are you determining that the drive has spun down? With smartctl or
some other tool?

Are you running the standard Ubuntu desktop (with gnome-power-manager
running)?

[Bug 414795] Re: PC beep no longer works in Karmic alpha4

2009-10-05 Thread duanedesign
pcspkr is now blacklisted. That is the expected behavior. However
un-blacklisting it, and loading the module, should result in the sound being
played again. However if i understand bug #77010 Pulse Audio is supposed to now
take over and play a user defined, and much more reasonable, beep.
In the above referenced bug there are a few ways mentioned to turn off/on this
beep including gconf-editor. I am not sure if this might help you Ahmed get
your beep back.

[Bug 399587] Re: Brightness control does not work with Toshiba Portege M100

2009-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Reassigning this to a more appropriate package, since acpi-support
should actually have nothing to do with handling this hotkey (I /think/
hal is still taking care of brightness controls, even in karmic).

For the problem you're experiencing booting the karmic kernel, I
strongly recommend opening a new bug report against the linux package
about that if you see that the problem is still present with the karmic
beta.

My testing shows:
1. The guest account is not shown in the GDM login screen for me even though
the guest session is still open
2. Choosing "guest account" from the user switcher when the guest session is
already open locks my screen then fails to switch to the guest session.

[Bug 442717] Re: Update notifier needs a monochromatic icon

2009-10-05 Thread mac_v
I'm not comfortable adding the icons to Humanity.
1: they dont fit the theme , the icons are styled differently from the rest of
the panel icons and the colors are totally out of humanity's palate , adding
them would lead to bugs asking for monochrome icons
2: the gconf change is not supported in Ubuntu , so i dont think adding those
icons, conveys the message of it being a *not* supported option.
3:changing the icon for Mythbuntu sake affects Ubuntu as well , so i'd rather
think Mythbuntu changes its default to not show the icon or use the current
icon as is.

[Bug 444096] Re: XWPE has problems with pointer

2009-10-05 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

The debdiff you attached does not match the bug report title: can you clarify
the bug report, and make sure you close it in the changelog?
Also, the version should end with ubuntu1, deleting build1 from the version
number, and done for karmic, and not intrepid.
And it seems your debdiff contains 2 times the same lines...

When having an updated debdiff, please put back the bug report to
complete.

Thanks for your work.

[Bug 443241] Re: freetalk FTBFS

2009-10-05 Thread fabrice_sp
Hi,

Please do not add a patch system to a package that comes from Debian:
this makes the debdiff bigger, and increase the difference between
Debian and Ubuntu.

Another approach to fix this compilation error would be to copy the
'from' variable to another one in line 153 to a char *, use it and free
it before leaving the function.

When you have the new debdiff, please put your bug report back to
complete.

Thanks for your work!

Fabrice

[Bug 444261] [NEW] "waiting for service to start" text in pending operations is misleading

2009-10-05 Thread Caleb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

For whatever technical reason, Software Center has to wait for previous
operations to complete before it begins downloading for the next
operation. If an installation is running and another is queued up, the
second task shows the text "waiting for service to start." While this
may be true, it's too technical, and may lead users to believe that
something is wrong with the system. If it's just waiting for a previous
operation to complete, then it should say so with more informative text.

[Bug 444262] [NEW] network manager won't connect to hidden wireless SSID using WEP

2009-10-05 Thread Sir_Brizz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

First off, what I'm using:

Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 Beta, last updated 10:30pm MDT
Wireless card is an Atheros ar928x (yes, I know)
This is a laptop, HP G70

I'm having an issue with not being able to connect to my router which is
a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 running the Tomato firmware. I don't think this
matters.

I have SSID broadcasting turned off, WEP 64 bit with a hex key turned
on.

I am using knetworkmanager to try to connect. The process I use is as
follows (using the taskbar icon).

Nothing else happens. I have tried opening various dialogs and clicking

there are no other messages on the console from no-daemon

If I can provide other info, do let me know. I'm happy to provide any

[Bug 430016] Re: Disable screen locking on resume

2009-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
The LOCK_SCREEN setting in acpi-support only takes effect if acpi-supprt
is responsible for suspending the machine, which it is not by default.
You probably need to adjust your gnome-power-manager configuration.

[Bug 443305] Re: cannot install packages

2009-10-05 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

[Bug 443994] Re: software-center crashed with TypeError in _run_transaction()

2009-10-05 Thread Caleb
I reviewed the stderr output from Software Center when trying to install
or remove anything, and there appeared to be a problem with apport not
having privileges to write to /var/crash. I tried running it as root,
and got a usable report from that, which seems to be the same as this
one.
