Whoopie, can you explain your patch in more detail?
Also, have you presented this patch to upstream? I'd be more comfortable with

I believe the present method achieves the balance of arranging the drive

first place] and yet not being too complex for a new user.

Sounds like an incomplete archive sync, with half the samba package at

[Bug 445191] [NEW] Enabling proprietory ATI driver prevents X from starting

2009-10-06 Thread James Pursey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Hi

The bug report that I am sending doesn't concern Ubuntu 9.04 but Ubuntu 9.10
beta. I have never submitted a bug report to Ubuntu before and I wasn't aware
of the Apport tool beforehand.
I installed 9.10 out of curiosity to see if the stability and performance
problems I experience with the fglrx driver 9.04 would be resolved in 9.10.
However, after I enabled the driver by pressing the Restricted Hardware Drivers
icon and rebooted the computer, I was presented with a black display – no
splash screen, no log on screen, just black (and the caps lock light was
blinking). I have since re-installed 9.04 on this system – which explains why
some of the auto-generated information in this report isn't correct.
Also, and I don't know if this is a related problem or not and whether I should
file a separate bug report, after installing 9.10 and being prompted to reboot,
the screen would flicker between being black and showing the wallpaper, and the
only way to stop the machine was by pressing the off button on the computer.
This was before the ATI driver was enabled.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx
Package: firefox 3.0.14+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1

[Bug 445193] [NEW] missing rieserfsprogs from install cd

2009-10-06 Thread James Sparenberg

The live/install cd either needs to contain the reiserfsprogs package so
that a partition can be formatted reiserfs or a reiserfs partition that
exists can be used or the option to user reiserfs needs to be removed
from the installer and the users informed that they will need to re-
format their partitions previously formated with reiserfs. (like Home)

[Bug 194973] Re: Motion blur and Water effect plugins are incompatible

2009-10-06 Thread Sam "SmSpillaz" Spilsbury
This sounds a /lot/ like a driver based issue to me. I don't see any
reason as to why ARB_fragment_program and the simple texture copy and
replace code should interfere here, unless there are bugs in compiz'
opacity handling. Although, I can say that I have an 8600GT and am using
191.x and am seeing this issue as well (although, it is a general issue
with the texture copy logic and doesn't just happen when water is
enabled [but it does when blur is enabled too])

Could somebody please triage this with a FOSS driver that is known to
support fragment programs and is relatively fast? I'm thinking
r4xx/r3xx.

Cheers,

Sam

BTW, the 'handler already registered' messages are harmless and can be
ignored, that is just DBUS trying to set up another connection that
already existed for another compiz instance.

[Bug 444352] Re: DB deadlock on reboot prevents EMI from being started

2009-10-06 Thread Thierry Carrez
Given the nature of the bug (and how early it shows up in the instance
run start), I would be very surprised if it was imagecontent-specific.
Maybe imagesize-specific, but even in that case I'd be surprised.

Maybe you tested a UEC image first, and it failed, then tried a
eucalyptus one, and it worked ? In my testing, the DB recovered by
itself after a couple minutes.

[Bug 253599] Re: Icons of usb storage devices shoud be different from internal hdd icons

icon-naming-utils is a script for maintaining *backwards* compatibility
with old desktop icon themes, while migrating to the names specified in
the Icon Naming Specification. According to the Specification devices
are named without gnome-dev-* , so, icon themes should use name drive-
removable-media-usb instead of gnome-dev-removable-usb, media-flash-cf
instead of gnome-dev-media-cf, etc, look at
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-
latest.html#devices

icon-naming-utils are for generating legacy gnome-dev-* symlinks from
standard icon names, listed in the Specification, but not for generating
drive-removable* or media-flash* from legacy gnome-dev-*, see legacy-
icon-mapping.xml (/usr/share/icon-naming-utils/legacy-icon-mapping.xml)

Finally I completely understood how to solve this big issue:
1. At first we need to fix icon themes to use standard icon names, listed at
http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/icon-naming-spec-latest.html#devices
instead of legacy gnome-dev-* names ! Look at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506532#c6 for more info.
2. When icon themes will use standard names then we could fix second part of
this issue - gvfs libraries, which use the drive-harddisk-usb icon name, for
usb storage devices that aren't hard disks, see
http://git.gnome.org./cgit/gvfs/tree/monitor/hal/ghaldrive.c and
http://git.gnome.org./cgit/gvfs/tree/monitor/hal/ghalmount.c

@DasFox, I know about the unmuting part. The thing was that there was no

Now, with 2.6.31.12 it works again (builging from source).

@Xavi, in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-
driver/+question/84686 there are instructions to follow. Make sure to
replace the number of the kernel by what you are using. And that you
have build-essential installed.

Any plan to take care of this before the release of Karmic?

- any error messages you see at boot time about mounting when booting without
the 'splash' option
- the results of 'sudo killall -USR1 mountall && mount', run on your system
after boot when the network is up but without having mounted the filesystems by
hand
- the output of 'sudo status statd'

[Bug 443133] Re: the gettext schemas translations are not being used

2009-10-06 Thread Robert Ancell
Hmm, my translations don't seem to be working at all at the moment.
Default values are definitely not being translated, the gettext calls come from
02_xml-gettext-domain.patch, the following function needs to be fixed:
gconf/gconf-schemas.c:
GConfValue*
gconf_schema_get_default_value (const GConfSchema *schema)
{
  g_return_val_if_fail (schema != NULL, NULL);

  return REAL_SCHEMA (schema)->default_value;
}

[Bug 424400] Re: DM9601 or Pegasus based USB NICs dont find their MAC address under 2.6.31-100-imx51

2009-10-06 Thread Tobin Davis
It is possible that the latest kernel fixes a bunch of usb anomalies.
Amit mentioned that there were several usb related patches. I am now
seeing good behavior as well with my Pegasus based usb-nic. I no longer
have the DM9601 based nic (gave it to Amit).

[Bug 445180] [NEW] nvidia-xconfig not setting up xorg.conf

2009-10-06 Thread DasFox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When installing Nvidia 185 source along with glx, nvidia-xconfig is not
automatically running and setting up xorg.conf which I thought is
suppose to be normal and not making the end-user run the command.

When I first installed Karmic a few days ago after installing Nvidia I
did not need to manually run nvidia-xconfig. Today I reinstalled Karmic
and after doing an update and then installing Nvidia, after I rebooted I
noticed the drivers didn't load and I had to manually run nvidia-xconfig
to get xorg.conf setup.

Re: [Ubiquity-slideshow] [Bug 423639] Re: timing is to fast if installing to slow media

2009-10-06 Thread Aron Xu
Some time8 minutes still cannot fulfill the installation, because when
additional language pack is needed, or user has a not very fast link
speed to there region's main update sever, the installation will be
almost *frozen* at around 80% of the total progress. This is a problem
of Ubiquity, but before it is solved, our slide show may consider
about it.

[Bug 424322] Re: [karmic] eclipse-platform incorrectly depends on openjdk-6-jre, firefox

2009-10-06 Thread Rockwalrus
Eclipse 3.4 only ran on the Ubuntu OpenJDK 6 package -- the Sun JVM
would crash after seconds of use, and gij was completely unusable for
some reason that slips my mind. It's entirely possible that 3.5.x works
with the Ubuntu Sun JVM package in Karmic, but you should test it first
before assuming that it does and marking accordingly in debian/control.

Regardless, since the original report was against 3.4, which did require
the openjdk 6 package to be used usefully, it wasn't a bug to depend on
it explicitly.

[Bug 445055] Re: Firefox Error Message - Seems to have been caused by previous error-report crashing gconf

2009-10-06 Thread Brent Dunnaway
I, too, am getting these errors. Both in Karmic Beta, and I also got
them in Alpha (Daily)

The best solution (temporary work-around) I can give you for the moment,
is to

sudo killall gconfd-2

and then try to do whatever you were doing again. That will
automatically open a fresh instance of gconfd-2. It seems to be some
kind of problem with gconf2 and .authorization (sp?) files (my terrible
memory... I hope I got that correct.)

I'm guessing it's a regression of some sort. I have found posts about
this error dating back to 2004. I've only just started experiencing it
with Karmic builds, however.

Re: [Bug 31037] Re: Vino-server takes 90% of cpu when only listening for incoming connections

2009-10-06 Thread Mr. Mike
Yes. Saw this in Jaunty today (Oct. 6th) after getting all the updates
(but NOT "jaunty-proposed").
I enabled remote desktop and rebooted.
Upon reboot and log-in (I have it configured to auto-login my account,
but I don't think that is related), vino-server is spawned over and over
and over again, and it is the respawning from gnome-session of
vino-server that seems to eat all the CPU, not any single vino-server
process. As mentioned earlier in this bug-thread, I have "psacct"
enabled and I can see 100's of vino-server processes that consume 0.01
seconds.

[Bug 434447] Re: Desktop switcher won't disable gnome-panel when changing from classic to netbook mode

2009-10-06 Thread nick parlante
I'm afraid I still have consistent crashing problems with the Desktop
Switcher applet. This is a fresh install of UNR karmic beta 1, then
applying all the current auto updates (as of Oct 6) on an eee pc 1005ha.
Most of the time it locks up, but I got one .crash log.

The following crash sequence is pretty repeatable on this machine:

1. Be in classic mode
2. Open a terminal, just so some program is running
3. Switch to netbook desktop mode ... this works
4. Try to switch back to classic desktop

The netbook desktop disappears, the terminal app takes over the whole
screen, but with a drawing glitch of 2 vertical scroll bars. The classic
desktop menu elements are not present ... the menu at the top of the
screen is from the terminal, so it all looks wrong. Clicking or typing
in the terminal does not work. However, the close-window menu command
does sortof work in the terminal .. the window disappears enough to
reveal the classic menus at the top (I guess they were just covered),
but the main terminal window does not erase, so things look wrong, with
the mid-click menu and terminal window contents left on screen. From
here, trying to switch back to netbook desktop just freezes. Trying to
do a restart gives the warning window "UNR Launcher not responding" ..
so I would guess that the UNR Launcher is getting stuck during the
switch and causing all these other problems.

For the .crash log, I was switching desktop modes but I don't recall
which direction. I had not yet deleted the launcher pref file, so
there's a chance the crash is due to my earlier testing, but I think
it's most likely the same problem as above.

[Bug 445170] [NEW] [Karmic] Xorg doesn't display full area on external monitor

2009-10-06 Thread jc00ke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I plugged in my Dell 24" S2409W with HDMI into my Lenovo IdeaPad Y650
(418534U) and turned on the dual monitor using the Display applet.
Correct resolution found: 1920x1080 but the full screen could not be
used. It's as if the screens are overlapping, but they are not set to do
that in the applet.

2 screenshots are attached. One is a photo of my computer when the
screensaver was on. You can see the area that is essentially inactive. I
expected the displays to show the full screens for each monitor.

[Bug 268808] Re: superblock last write time is in the future

2009-10-06 Thread David Ayers
I'm having this issue eventough independent of the time zone. I'm
running on a laptop with a faulty battery (to be delivered soon).
Therefore the system time is always reset to some date in 2008. Under
Jaunty this caused a slightly annoying, yet automatic skipable fsck.
Under Karmic, I need to set the time on the command line.

[Bug 438536] Re: Notifications should show up closer to top right

2009-10-06 Thread mac_v
There has been several objections to this change. But IMO , this doesnt seem
wrong/ugly/intrusive!
They seem to have done it due to concerns raised by other bug reporters in
other bugs.
We might not like how it looks at first but it doesnt need the negativism this
bug has generated. new changes might seem different initially just my 2
cents :)

[Bug 425435] Re: Delta 44 cards not working since upgrade 9.04

2009-10-06 Thread vixmusic01
Hello everyone,

I was reading about my problem as it is still not fixed

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046137

This is about ALSA -

victo...@ubuntu-home:~$ sudo cat /proc/asound/cards
[sudo] password for victoria:
 0 [I82801BAICH2 ]: ICH - Intel 82801BA-ICH2
  Intel 82801BA-ICH2 with AD1885 at irq 17
 1 [M44]: ICE1712 - M Audio Delta 44
  M Audio Delta 44 at 0xdf80, irq 21

Does my Delta 44 card have to be 0 ?

If so how can I change it?

Could this be the problem?

Thanks for any help.

Victoria

[Bug 445140] Re: built-in microphone not working on Dell Inspiron 1420n

2009-10-06 Thread skillllllz
Thank you! I found that it needed to be set to "Analog Stereo Duplex"
profile on the Hardware tab, and to "Microphone 1" on the Input tab.
Clearly, this was not a bug, but definitely an annoyance. This was a
fresh install of the beta and it defaulted to the incorrect settings.

[Bug 445165] [NEW] Sony BD Remote can't add/pair device because it doesn't use a PIN

2009-10-06 Thread dailyglen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

Hi,

I can't pair my Sony BD Remote for the PS3 because the program doesn't
have a setting to bypass the PIN and just trust the device. Bluez has
this but it isn't used by default with gnome. Is there a way to trust a
device with gnome-blutooth?

Thanks.
