ok thanks for the explanation. i was not really aware that any provider
needs the VPN plugin to get connected. sorry for that. unfortunately its
too late for karmic to get anything additional on the CD, so Lucid it
will be. Thanks again!

[Bug 446023] Re: uec node cd install doesn't handle static network configuration

2009-10-08 Thread Colin Watson
I can understand why br0 would need to be static rather than dhcp. I
don't understand why the static network configuration needs to go on br0
rather than on eth0, though; this just seems weird, especially with
'bridge_ports eth0'. Can you explain this for the hard of thinking?

[Bug 446222] [NEW] lzma would compress better than gzip

2009-10-08 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfonts-base

The /usr/share/fonts directory uses a lot of disk space.

[Bug 445359] Re: can't enable wireless network in karmic beta livecd

2009-10-08 Thread Kalman Reti
This might be a key ring issue. I can enable the wireless from the top
bar; in doing so it asks me to create a keyring password. If I then try
to use system / preferences / network connections to edit the network,
it prompts me if I want to let the application use the keyring. If I allow
it, then I can actually get a non-greyed-out apply button in the edit
dialog for the wireless network connection.

I can then check the check box for Allow all users and click apply.
However, that immediately disconnects the wireless network!

[Bug 446225] [NEW] telinit 1 (or init 1) doesn't work in karmic beta livecd

2009-10-08 Thread Kalman Reti
Public bug reported:

If you issue sudo telinit 1 or sudo init 1 in a live session, you briefly
see the console
dialog which asks you what to do (and from which in Jaunty you could select
drop into
a root command prompt), but it is immediately replaced by a non-functional gui,
i.e. you
see the desktop background but neither the keyboard nor mouse work (except for
ctl-alt-delete which restarts).

I can't capture the dmesg output because nothing seems to work, but as it
scrolled by
I saw a bunch of messages indicating various processes respawning.

I tried this with the beta karmic desktop livecd on three machines; only on one
of them
did I get a glimpse of the console menu selector. Looking at the various
consoles, there
was a line on one of them which indicated that the system was going into single
user mode.

[Bug 330906] Re: MASTER: GMA-500 lacks driver for 8.10 and 9.10 (poulsbo works only on 8.04 and 9.04)

2009-10-08 Thread Loïc Minier
@jimpop, this is not a place to vent your frustration. Would we have
received a suitable driver for the current kernels, we'd have uploaded
it in the ~ubuntu-mobile PPA or even to Ubuntu as we did for the
previous versions.

Intel has top quality drivers for its other chipsets, but not for
Poulsbo due to a complex IP issues. This is not in our control to fix
for them, and we don't have the resources to reverse engineer or forward
port the existing kernel bits (these were even rejected from staging in
the upstream linux kernel).

If you're aware of a forward ported or reverse engineered driver which
we could include, then this is the right place to mention it. I think
it's too late for the 9.10 release, but it could be prepared in a PPA or
considered for 10.04.

(Note that the recipes in this bug only apply to the xorg video driver but
don't cover the kernel counterparts which are needed for psb-drm and hence 2D
and 3D acceleration.)

Also note that support for Poulsbo is expected to work with Ubuntu 8.10
and 9.04 after installing the packages from the ~ubuntu-mobile PPA.

[Bug 446228] [NEW] Pulse audio breaks sound in games

2009-10-08 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The games Glest and Chromium have broken audio when pulse is installed. Steps
to reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 9.10 beta
2. Install Chromium or Glest
3. Listen(possibly wait a long time or engage the games so they play many
sounds simultaneously)
4. Hear line noise intermittently which interrupts audio playback

Fabio Marzocca skrev:

No, I can't. AFS is mounted on /afs, but when i go to preferences, I can
only check/uncheck the mounted physical volumes.
I want to be able to scan my partition, but when Scan is enabled for /,
baobab also scans /afs, which it shouldn't do.

reads:

  --\ Versions of python-zopeinterface (2)
   i3.4.0-0ubuntu3

   ppython-zope.interface 3.5.2-1

So the new version is listed, but its name is different from the old one.
The obsolete package name is python-zopeinterface while the new one is
python-zope.interface.
I should add that the manual selection of the new package does not raise any
issue like breaking dependencies and allows a manually forced transition.

Would a meta-package be of any help to make the transition automatic?
Apropos meta-package, the changelog of 3.5.1-2 mentions the removal of
python-zopeinterface metapackage as it is not needed. Is this the culprit?

[Bug 438687] Re: FEC driver does not set DRIVER property in udev which makes network-manager fail

2009-10-08 Thread Loïc Minier
Jeremy, ah right, I expected the DRIVER property to be set on that other node;
the recursive query indeed shows the property on some nodes:
l...@babbage20:~$ udevadm info --query=all --path=/class/net/eth0

  looking at device '/devices/platform/fec.0/net/eth0':

I did not try Network-Manager and can't try it out right now (not near the
board), it probably works according to other comments in this bug.

Thanks and well done!

Re: [Bug 159941] [NEW] fglrx driver does not work in RT kernel

2009-10-08 Thread Francesco Pretto
2009/10/8 Luke Yelavich luke.yelav...@canonical.com:
Could you please provide the exact error message you get when attempting
to load the fglrx module? You can most probably get this output from the
dmesg command. If you can attach it to this bug, it would go a long way
in helping work out the problem.

Hmm... I advice to read the bug report from the begin: it's not a
matter of loading the kernel. Much simply, the module can't be
compiled within DKMS infrastructure using a -rt kernel because of GPL
symbols violation. Nothing get compiled - nothing to load - nothing
can fail :) .

I've posted an (illegal) workaround [1]. Wondering why there's no
legal problem compiling fglrx module using standard kernel/headers.

[Bug 446238] [NEW] tsclient should allow cut and past from and into clipboard without selecting add my local drive to the remote computer option

2009-10-08 Thread marco.pallotta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tsclient

I tested that the only way to allow copy and paste from and into
clipboard (of the host system), with tsclient, is to enable the option
add my local drive to the remote computer (from local resources

[Bug 292377] Re: Calibration support for Xenarc 700TSV

2009-10-08 Thread Nasa
UPDATE: After booting up the system, the touch screen recognizes
touches -- however movement is reversed in the y-axis. Running the
calibration tool from the system menu and restarting the X-server
corrects this. However, when the system is rebooted the original
configuration is restored (ie: reversed in the y-axis). I noticed this
behavior with both the last alpha and this beta.

[Bug 382468] Re: Gajim sometimes behaves badly when closing a tab

2009-10-08 Thread Benoit PIERRE
I have the same problems, same Ubuntu/Gajim versions. I did however
change the default python version to use, so /usr/bin/python is a link
to python2.5. Here are the traces I get when launching Gajim from a
terminal:

~ gajim
2009-10-07 17:55:40,249 gajim.c.x.transports_nb: ERROR: Connection to

gajim.py:3386: GtkWarning: gtk_accel_group_activate: assertion

^C/usr/lib/python2.5/warnings.py:80: RuntimeWarning: tp_compare didn't return
-1 or -2 for exception
  if registry.get(key):
^C^C^Z
zsh: suspended gajim

As you can see, in those 2 cases I had to kill it because the interface
was frozen.

[Bug 287751] Re: [Intrepid] dmraid 5 error: raid4-5 not in kernel

2009-10-08 Thread danwood76
These bugs are addressed in jaunty (no more messages or raw devices) so upgrade
if the messages really bother you.
I dont believe any harm is caused by the kernel trying to access the raw
devices but it is possible I suppose.

This bug has been fixed and is closed.

[Bug 446246] [NEW] printing two files in a row makes wait for 'getting printer info'

2009-10-08 Thread Andrew Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

when printing the first file prints immediately (without that printer status is
checked).
when printing a second file while the first is still printing then the printer
status is checked and users have to wait till they can click to print the
second file. this is different than in jaunty.

[Bug 446245] [NEW] lzma more efficient than gzip

2009-10-08 Thread Jérôme
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-db

The /usr/share/ppd directory uses a lot of disk space.

All the ppd files are currently compressed by using gzip.

I think that using lzma would decrease the disk space used as well as
improve the decompression speed.

Below is a comparaison for the file

[Bug 430484] Re: Slow download from ubuntu.com servers

2009-10-08 Thread Luke Faraone
Apologies, that was not my intent.

Anyway, the best place to discuss infrastructure issues is via IRC at
#canonical-sysadmin, escalating to a rt ticket if needed.
mirr...@ubuntu.com is the email address for that specific RT issue
queue, I believe.

[Bug 83553] Re: redundant updating of packages

2009-10-08 Thread RK
Isn't the core issue here that Ubuntu doesn't have any infrastructure to
provide delta packages like e.g. OpenSuSE does? Because you can start
splitting packages all you want, if an update to a 10MB documentation
package that changes just one file of it requires a 10MB download
without delta packages instead of approximately only the size of the
changed file...

[Bug 446247] [NEW] metacity sometimes closes/maximizes/minimizes/moves the wrong window

2009-10-08 Thread Shane O'Connell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

Sometimes when I attempt to close, maximizes, minimize or move a window,
metacity will for some reason pick the wrong window to do the action on.

Some examples:
- A terminal is maximized in front of a maximized firefox window and when I
close it it instead attempts to close firefox (tells me I am closing X tabs, am
I sure? etc.)
- A terminal is opened maximized in my right monitor, I open a new terminal
which appears in my left monitor, but when I try to maximize it (by double
clicking the titlebar) the terminal in my right monitor is moved to my cursor
as if I'd dragged it there
- A terminal is opened in my left monitor and another is fullscreen in my
right, I click the titlebar and try to start moving the left terminal but the
right screen terminal instead moves to my curser as if I'd attempted to move
that one

It's not consistent, and sometimes these actions work properly, however
I can generally always reproduce it if I spend a few minutes trying.

I'm using ubuntu karmic, using xserver-xorg-video-ati version
1:6.12.99+git20090825.fc74e119-0ubuntu3. I have two 1280x1024 monitors
set up side by side using xrandr.
