[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-11-29 Thread Antti P Miettinen
First a "thank you" for the patch to all involved. The karmic stock
kernel is really unbearable on Dell latitude E4300.

Has anyone found an easy reliable way to disable the touchpad
completely? I've tried gpointing-device-settings and gsynaptics but the
touchpad gets continuously re-enabled. Would it be difficult to add
touchpad disable to the kernel driver as a module option?

I experienced the problem recently in Karmic.

The problem arose when I moved PDF files in to a folder within a linux

I guess the problem is especially due to nautilus trying to generate the

[Bug 84931] Re: Various icons don't have a 16x16 icon size

2009-11-29 Thread Antti Kaihola
The Reinteract application [1] uses these icons to indicate the status of
Python source code displayed in a tab:
gtk-ok (16x16 missing for this one)
gtk-refresh
gtk-apply
gtk-dialog

Whenever the status changes to "successfully executed", the gtk-ok icon
is used. Since 16x16 is missing for that icon, the tab suddenly gets
taller which causes an ugly layout change in the window.

  INFORMATION FOR SRU CONSIDERATION FOLLOWS:

  1. A statement explaining the impact of the bug on users and
justification for backporting the fix to the stable release:

This bug prevents users in some locales (notable Serbia and Antigua,
sr_ME and en_AG) from running locale-aware Python software in Ubuntu,
including alacarte and software-center. The latter is particularly
problematic, as it is likely to affect many novice users.

The proposed fix is small, clear, in the upstream bugtracker already,
- and is isolated to one file, and has been used with success by users of
- Ubuntu Karmic in both the mentioned locales from a PPA.
+ and is isolated to one function in one file, and has been used with
+ success by users of Ubuntu Karmic in both the mentioned locales from a
+ PPA.

This appears to qualify as a bug ... "which represents a severe
regression from the previous release of Ubuntu. This includes packages
which are totally unusable, like being uninstallable or crashing on
  startup."

It could perhaps be argued that these locales did not exist in earlier
versions so this is not technically a regression?

  2. An explanation of how the bug has been addressed in the development
branch, including the relevant version numbers of packages modified in
  order to implement the fix.

An attached debdiff for Ubuntu Lucid is attached to this bug report. It
  awaits sponsorship.

  3. A minimal patch applicable to the stable version of the package.

See attached debdiffs. The original patch is at
  http://bugs.python.org/file14881/locale.py-parselocale-patch.diff

  4. Detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug.

  TEST CASE:

4.1 Install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Desktop (i386 and amd64 have both been
  tested).

4.2 At the GDM login screen, set the locale to English/Antigua and log
in (start a session) in that locale.

4.3 Click on Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center

4.4 To see the Python traceback, open a Terminal window and run
  software-center from it.

4.5 If desired, obtain the patched python2.6 package(s) from the PPA at
  https://launchpad.net/~jmarsden/+archive/ppa/ and repeat the tests.
software-center will now run and operate correctly.

[Bug 242844] Re: [ooo-build] cannot start OpenOffice.org with xvfb-run

2009-11-29 Thread Tel
On close inspection the soffice script is not the real culprit because
although it always backgrounds the binary it also has "wait $!" right
afterward so the critical behaviour occurs at a deeper level when the
binary forks various layers of itself.

I'd like to just add a comment here that it should not be a guessing
game to figure out whether a program will detach itself or not. Consider
this file:

 /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-writer

The contents get into /etc/mailcap when /usr/sbin/update-mime runs, and
hence various programs (for example the "mutt" email client) are
instructed how they should execute OpenOffice in order to display a
file. The current setting is:

 soffice -no-oosplash -writer '%s'

Sadly, this will detach if OpenOffice is running somewhere on the
desktop, but it will not detach should this be the first instance of
OpenOffice. In other words, arbitrarily it may or may not detach for
reasons unrelated to (and unknowable to) the program that tries to
invoke the MIME entry. By the way, the "-no-oosplash" option still shows
a splash screen (go figure), the open office wiki does not document the
"-no-oosplash" option either (maybe it is not a supported option).

What should happen is that certain command line options force it to
NEVER detach, strictly if those options are present. In every other
situation it should ALWAYS detach because OpenOffice is primarily an
interactive desktop application. The behaviour of a command should never
depend on factors beyond the options of that command, otherwise everyone
is back into guessing games.

For what it's worth, the /usr/bin/oowriter script does appear to always
detach as far as I can check. Would be nice if the OpenOffice website
would make more of an effort to document the supported command line
options so people working with this had some idea of what is supposed to
happen.

Why doesn't this affect the majority of the userbase? There are a lot of
germans in the open-source community. And even more have german friends

ibus-anthy should be pulled automatically when you select input method
support for Japanese, or do a fresh install in Japanese. It is already
on the dependency list and, provided Internet access is available during
install time, should be installed automatically.

[Bug 120258] Re: Laptop Battery Time Remaining Outrageously Inaccurate

2009-11-29 Thread Kevin Demarest
I get about 46 minutes from my 5200mAh battery. I charged it until the
charge light indicated it was fully charged, then let the battery
completely run down until the system powered off. Typing acpi at the
command line doesn't report the % full accurately, but there is a
problem with the battery capacity now (only getting 46 minutes), and I
got the message that my battery capacity is at 41% and is broken or
damaged. My problem isn't just with gnome-power-manager, it's with
acpi.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can
become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try
this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not
need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want
to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one
until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

[Bug 194472] Re: Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback

2009-11-29 Thread mac_v
Let's not discuss unrelated topics on this bug report.
Currently gksu, PolicyKit, new GDM do show feedback and the terminal is the odd
one out here.
Adding a system-wide option is not what this bug report is about.
I dont believe there is an option in gksu, PolicyKit, new GDM to even disable
the feedback. Kindly file bugs in the appropriate apps rather than discussing
them here.
Only if they are fixed in the appropriate apps is the system wide setting even
possible.

Terminal is now being fixed to show the starts by default. Once the
other apps are fixed we can discuss about system-wide settings.

[Bug 451523] Re: Intel x3100 enormous regression in ubuntu 9.10 beta

2009-11-29 Thread Chris D
I just ran Karmic on the system I had problems with, and it ran just
fine. There is a little bit of sluggishness in some Compiz animations,
mainly around events that involve mapping a window (open, unminimize,
etc). Otherwise, it seems quite good. I have no idea how this is
possible, the only thing I can think of is that the least time I
installed the RC and then updated after the release, and this time I
used a clean install of the final release version.

Nope, just "stdsounds". I do have issues where sound drops out for a

[Bug 355389] Re: Software Center (and Add/Remove Applications) have duplicate listings

2009-11-29 Thread mac_v
@WubiNeophyte:
This is not a system-wide problem.
This isnt even an app-wide problem.
This is a bug in 1 particular app and in 1 specific app listed in the app out
of the 1000's of apps listed!
The chances of this affecting the user is quite less. This is not something
which is going to greatly improve/impact the usability of the OS in general.

Though you have caught a good bug , to consider this bug as within the 100
papercuts for Lucid would not be ideal.
Hope you can understand that though the issue is trivial , the impact of this
bug is even less.
Thanks!
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read

[Bug 447312] Re: [Karmic Beta] Bluetooth is disabled.

2009-11-29 Thread gdesilva
I also have been experiencing a similar problem to above.

I use a Dell Dimension 9150 desktop with a Dell bluetooth dongle and
bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Everything worked fine in Jaunty. With
Karmic, the keyboard and mouse works fine although I cannot get the
bluetooth apps to work - no bluetooth adaptor found message.

rfkill list produces nothing. Device Manager states that the USB
Bluetooth device in HID Proxy mode.

hciconfig hci0 up returns Can't get device message.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

[Bug 482597] Re: no dialpad to make phonecalls

2009-11-29 Thread Germán Pabón
I think you should reconsider opening this bug again.

When you receive a call, and you need to press a number (like for some
options) you CAN'T, because you have no dialpad.

In my Company's Asterisk server, you call the central machine and then
you should chose some options (via pressing numbers) to access some
functions. This interactions is not possible at this moment...

[Bug 490204] [NEW] Freeze during restarting

2009-11-29 Thread cshong
Public bug reported:

Iam using Ubuntu 9.10. Before this, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 via Wubi and
upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 on my laptop through alternate CD.
Then I updated my Ubuntu 9.10 by using Update Manager. After update, the
problem of error "Buffer i/o error on device loop0 logical block xx"
was resolved, but new problem arrived.

When i try to restart my Ubuntu, It shows the Ubuntu shut down screen,
then my laptop totally freeze, with the following conditions:

1. My laptop monitor turned black (or turned off).

2. My USB mouse and external USB 2.5 portable Hard Disk Drive's power
were turned off.

3. The laptop still on and the USB Cooler Fan still working, but freeze
and not restarting.

To get rid of the freeze, I have to turn off my laptop, then turn on
again.

If you require more information, please reply.

[Bug 490205] [NEW] Empty Disc Recognised, but still Asks for Empty DVD upon Burn

2009-11-29 Thread OzzyFrank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

Ubuntu 9.10 "amd64" running K3b 1.68.0~alpha3-0ubuntu1

I have used this program countless times to make playable video DVDs,
but this time the Burn button was disabled in the final dialogue box. In
the folder pane, it shows that I have an empty DVD in there, and in the
status bar shows me I have 3Mb of space left on it. I can use the Burn
button to bring up the dialogue, but it shows that I need to insert a
blank medium, even though it already knows I have one in there. I cannot
do anything but hit Cancel, since the Burn button is disabled because
apparently there is no disc in the drive.

I've restarted the program a few times, to no avail. I'll see if a
reboot does anything. Cheers

[Bug 194472] Re: Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback

2009-11-29 Thread Nik Krumm
#24 and #25 are spot on. As a relatively new-to-linux user, this is what I
would expect and understand. One additional consideration might be to display
the "explanation" message (#3, et al) AFTER 2 or 3 failed sudo attempts, or
after 15 seconds, etc. This will likely cut down on the confusion while not
making overt changes to the sudo "interface" for experienced users.
If an explanatory message is included, I would further propose that it includes
the location of the combobox to change the star behavior.

[Bug 343608] Re: Tutorial and User Guides do not work.

I confirm there are several bugs in Wink

- cannot access sample and manual through the GUI
- cannot create/modify Preferences (Flash preloader and Control bar)
- cannot access the Wink template (cursors, buttons)

This could be also problem of permissions since there is no .Wink folder
in one's home folder, but only the root folder.

What's the command to send a log. I would like to go further with these

You now *should* be able to save your settings.. Let me know if that

Bug description:
This is a problem with the X-server configuration file that the Nvidia control
panel should save resolution settings to, but cannot overwrite or backup the
related file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf), and thus, when booting the computer for a
fresh run, the resolution is each time reset to 800x600, even though the
monitor can resolve at 1200x800. The issue only happens when the computer is
turned off, then when it is turned back on, the settings have reset and each
time I need to change them back to my preference. I discovered that the problem
originated in the conf file, which even logging into root, and admitting every
sort of permission to the file, I could still not save changes or rewrite the
file.

[Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning

Okay, some updates.

I wrote a cron script for this system that would automatically record a

may as well go with xorg-edgers---because it couldn't possibly be any
worse than this.

So the system has been apt-get-upgraded with the xorg-edgers PPA, and
'Option "DebugFlushCaches" "1"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and everything is
running smoothly so far. I'll report back here if and when it starts
acting up.

[Bug 490201] [NEW] samba fails to open shares because of fixed unknown password

2009-11-29 Thread Stephen Cradock
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

In Lucid, the samba shares that should be accessible through nautilus
cannot be opened because clicking on WORKGROUP opens a password dialog.
Investigation using system-config-samba shows an unreadable password for
the (only) user, which cannot be changed or deleted (as it could be in
Karmic).

** Affects: samba (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
