The latter is particularly problematic, as it is likely to affect many novice users. [Bug 242844] Re: [ooo-build] cannot start OpenOffice.org with xvfb-run
On close inspection the soffice script is not the real culprit because although it always backgrounds the binary it also has "wait $!" right afterward so the critical behaviour occurs at a deeper level when the binary forks various layers of itself. I'd like to just add a comment here that it should not be a guessing game to figure out whether a program will detach itself or not. Consider this file: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-writer The contents get into /etc/mailcap when /usr/sbin/update-mime runs, and hence various programs (for example the "mutt" email client) are instructed how they should execute OpenOffice in order to display a file. The current setting is: soffice -no-oosplash -writer '%s' Sadly, this will detach if OpenOffice is running somewhere on the desktop, but it will not detach should this be the first instance of OpenOffice. In other words, arbitrarily it may or may not detach for reasons unrelated to (and unknowable to) the program that tries to invoke the MIME entry. By the way, the "-no-oosplash" option still shows a splash screen (go figure), the open office wiki does not document the "-no-oosplash" option either (maybe it is not a supported option). What should happen is that certain command line options force it to NEVER detach, strictly if those options are present. In every other situation it should ALWAYS detach because OpenOffice is primarily an interactive desktop application. The behaviour of a command should never depend on factors beyond the options of that command, otherwise everyone is back into guessing games. For what it's worth, the /usr/bin/oowriter script does appear to always detach as far as I can check. Would be nice if the OpenOffice website would make more of an effort to document the supported command line options so people working with this had some idea of what is supposed to happen. -- [ooo-build] cannot start OpenOffice.org with xvfb-run https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I just ran Karmic on the system I had problems with, and it ran just fine. There is a little bit of sluggishness in some Compiz animations, mainly around events that involve mapping a window (open, unminimize, etc). Otherwise, it seems quite good. I have no idea how this is possible, the only thing I can think of is that the least time I installed the RC and then updated after the release, and this time I used a clean install of the final release version. -- Intel x3100 enormous regression in ubuntu 9.10 beta https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/451523 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 194472] Re: Entering password in Terminal gives no visual feedback
#24 and #25 are spot on. As a relatively new-to-linux user, this is what I would expect and understand. [Bug 372103] Re: click on bookmark crashes firefox
In accordance with https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=495392 the bug is fixed by both mozilla and gtk upsteams: http://hg.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla-1.9.2/rev/b8b04ef445a1 http://git.gnome.org/cgit/gtk+/commit/?id=6dfb21e616bdf1e1db7ed86bff08fcb68210f17e I think it is safe to integrate 2-lines patches into appropriate Ubuntu packages. -- click on bookmark crashes firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/372103 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 462968] Re: unable to save X-Server configuration file with Nvidia nforce graphics card
Chris, thanks! That worked perfectly! Had you not pointed out these commands, I would have been lost. I was hopelessly trying to chmod the nvidia xorg.config file, but these two commands fixed the problem instantly. Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Invalid Status in Ubuntu: New Bug description: This is a problem with the X-server configuration file that the Nvidia control panel should save resolution settings to, but cannot overwrite or backup the related file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf), and thus, when booting the computer for a fresh run, the resolution is each time reset to 800x600, even though the monitor can resolve at 1200x800. The issue only happens when the computer is turned off, then when it is turned back on, the settings have reset and each time I need to change them back to my preference. I discovered that the problem originated in the conf file, which even logging into root, and admitting every sort of permission to the file, I could still not save changes or rewrite the file. -- unable to save X-Server configuration file with Nvidia nforce graphics card https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462968 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 484020] Re: [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning
Okay, some updates. I wrote a cron script for this system that would automatically record a batchbuffer dump and reboot if and when a GPU crash was detected. This worked well... a little too well. The crash was now occurring before GDM could even auto-login the user, and once I got thirteen dumps in a little over an hour (all attached here in a single tarball), I figured I may as well go with xorg-edgers---because it couldn't possibly be any worse than this. So the system has been apt-get-upgraded with the xorg-edgers PPA, and 'Option "DebugFlushCaches" "1"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and everything is running smoothly so far. I'll report back here if and when it starts acting up. ** Attachment added: "Thirteen batchbuffer dumps (from stock Karmic system)" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36248815/dri_debug-multiple.tar.gz -- [i845G] Display freezes (except for mouse pointer) without warning https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/484020 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 490201] [NEW] samba fails to open shares because of fixed unknown password
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: samba In Lucid, the samba shares that should be accessible through nautilus cannot be opened because clicking on WORKGROUP opens a password dialog. Investigation using system-config-samba shows an unreadable password for the (only) user, which cannot be changed or deleted (as it could be in Karmic). ** Affects: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- samba fails to open shares because of fixed unknown password https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490201 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
