[Bug 463251] Re: Openoffice KDE file dialog didn't ask to overwrite exists file

2009-12-21 Thread udippel
Just lost half a day of my work - thank you, kubuntu. :( :(

This is a very serious bug and shows how zero Kubuntu is 'ready for the
desktop'. I was working on a document the whole morning until 15.00,
created a new one, saved - stupid enough - under the same file name, and
found the previous one gone.

Something like this must never happen, and if it does, I do expect
Kubuntu to deploy a remedy at the very next day. Now they have been
sitting and sleeping on this for 2 months.

Disgusted,

Uwe

[Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2009-12-21 Thread Vasthu
BenQ S42 - WinXP Bios
I've patched my bios with the one for windows XP (which "disables" the Intel
card). The nVidia card works fine with the latest proprietary nvidia driver
(190.53).

I hope that this dsdt.dsl may help to determine the workings of this
laptop's hybrid graphics feature. Also, my previous dsdt.dsl upload was
using an older bios version so please compare it with looghmoo's file.
Looking through it, there are bits of lines to do with "Windows 2006"
(vista).

[Bug 477050] Re: Fresh Install of Karmic, Boot ends with Kernel Panic

2009-12-21 Thread B1ackcr0w
I did some work with some folk from #ubuntu and we found a few things
out about this bug.

My problem is with the 32bit PAE kernel. We looked closely at the panic
message and it suggested a problem with PAE. So we installed Karmic
again with network disconnected. It seems Ubiquity decided i'd be better
off with PAE during install, downloads it and installs it. With network
disconnected it has to default to generic kernel and installs and boots
without incident.

People in #ubuntu were suggesting I file a bug against Ubiquity, however
I think it's doing what it was designed to do?

[Bug 499013] Re: New "Apple Wireless Keyboard" (2009) not supported

2009-12-21 Thread Andrei Andreyanau
Hi, Christian!
Thanks for your attention and for your message about this problem. Honestly I
must say that yesterday I have rebuilt the core and tried to fix this thing
again without success. I added a line into /etc/modules to load hid_apple
module before system starts and modified /etc/modprobe.d/hid_apple.conf with
the following line:
options hid_apple fnmode=2
with giving configuration file following rights:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 428 2009-12-09 22:13 hid_apple.conf

After all I rebooted the system and tried to re-configure keyboard
shortcuts, but nothing changed at all (hid_apple module is loaded and
stays in the memory according to lsmod). Did you make anything else in
addition to those modifications I described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/227501/comments/22?

2009-12-21 Thread Peter Belew
Unfortunately, later today I updated the system, and much of the system
was wiped out, and it will no longer boot into Lucid. The system still
has Jaunty on it, but with the Grub 2 for Karmic and Lucid. (Lucid was
installed over Karmic).

I might be able to rescue the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from Jaunty.

MAYbe I'll try the beta-2 next month.

[Bug 222171] Re: [Hardy] Backlight low on Asus x57 laptop (M50sa)

2009-12-21 Thread Louigi Verona
Okay, there were a couple of mistakes in mr. Turner's script.

i...@dash:~$ cat > /etc/modprobe.d/asus-backlight-workaround.conf
# Got this from Ubuntu bug 222171.
install asus_laptop /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install asus_laptop; sleep 2; echo
5 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_level

I have an M51Vseries Asus, where I also made ls level 10, not 5 (full light)
and also switched the ambient sensor completely off by adding this line to the
above script.
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch

However, the funny thing about it is that while I was writing this message the
screen suddenly went dim. For some reason the ambient sensor just turned on
without warning, although yesterday I've worked for a long time and it was fine.

Something is definitely wrong with this module and, tbh, I am a bit
tired of this problem.

[Bug 499193] Re: thunderbird-3 window size doesn't fit into the screen

2009-12-21 Thread Maci
Hi!

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; hu; rv:1.9.1.7pre) Gecko/20091219
Shredder/3.0.1pre

In addition, I upgraded yesterday a thunderbird on windows to stable
3.0, and ran in the same bug.

I found a solution with enabled mail toolbar:
Window size fit perfectly if you set the "Show" parameter "Icons and Text"
instead of "Icons beside Text" (Default) in the View->Toolbars->Customize...
menu.

[Bug 114341] Re: Disk Usage Analyzer does not detect files in the directory

2009-12-21 Thread Alecz20
I think I found my problem: There were some files that were supposed to
be on the network. They were mounted in my home directory using
pyNeighbourhood. I was using a backup program that was supposed to
backup files to that location. I think it tried to backup when the
backup computer was not mounted, so it copied the files in my home
directory.

Still I find it strange that Disk usage analyzed did not scan that
directory in either mode

Note that during scan I unmounted all network drives.

[Bug 497299] Re: upstart not starting init-scripts (event net-device-up IFACE=lo missing)

2009-12-21 Thread Alson van der Meulen
Just encountered this bug on a desktop system. After the 0.6.3-11 update, the
boot process hung, preventing background daemons like SSH from starting. The
contents of /etc/network/interfaces was:
iface lo inet loopback

Adding 'auto lo' fixed it.

This system installed with 8.04 and upgraded to each subsequent release.
I'm quite sure that I never messed with interfaces(5), since the network
has always been managed by network-manager on this box.

This may technically not be a bug in upstart, but the upgrade is
breaking systems, even if the users never messed with upstart or
ifupdown. This might be barely acceptable in a release upgrade (with
extensive documentation in the release notes), but not in an SRU, IMO.
Breaking working systems after release is worse than not fixing a bug.

Is it feasible to automatically fix the broken non-customized
interfaces(5) files? Eg. by publishing an ifupdown SRU and making
upstart depend on that? Or can we notify the user that they need to fix
their interfaces(5) file if they want background daemons and recovery
mode to keep working?

[Bug 114341] Re: Disk Usage Analyzer does not detect files in the directory

2009-12-21 Thread Alecz20
Hello,

I had some problems with the math not adding up in Disk Usage Analyzer:

Total Filesystem Capacity: 78.8 GB (used: 67.2 GB available: 11.6 GB)

But when I scan home in user mode, I get home usage to be: 27 GB

When I scan filesystem in user mode, I get filesystem usage to be: 36 GB

And when I scan filesystem in root mode, I get filesystem uage to be:
17.2 GB (with home/user to be 7.8 GB instead of 27 GB)

However, If I go in nautilus in root mode, "/" has a size of 56.4 GB
which is closer to the real value, but where are those extra GB? Disk
Usage Analyzer seems unable to find out no matter what mode I am running
it in.

[Bug 463940] Re: No fans, thermalzone on HP Envy 15 and HP DV6T Quad

2009-12-21 Thread Alex Chiang
Gabe,

I don't know anything about openSuSE, but I'm guessing you got a build
error in acpi_walk_namespace. My patch is based on 2.6.33, and
acpi_walk_namespace() grew an extra parameter.

If my guess is right, then fixing the patch should be trivial. Just find
where we're calling acpi_walk_namespace() and remove one of the three
trailing NULL args so you only have 2 of them.

Otherwise, you can post your build error here and I'll try and debug it.

[Bug 445810] Re: usb-creator operates on mounted filesystems, does not display confirmation dialogs, issue warnings about data loss

2009-12-21 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Well, the yellow triangles signify either that the partition doesn't
have enough free space to do the install, or (I think) that it doesn't
have a compatible filesystem (presumably FAT16/FAT32). You may want to
blow away a partition, which I think should be allowed, albeit only
after clicking through a few klaxons and rotating lights.

For the common case---a USB drive with a single partition---it may make
more sense to display something simpler, as listing /dev/sdx + /dev/sdx1
must be pretty confusing for non-technical users.

(Note that the app doesn't list "local disk" devices that are IDE/SATA
and such; only those connected as USB mass-storage devices. And then,
there is no differentiation between a USB flash-memory
pendrive/thumbdrive and a USB magnetic-platter hard drive; you may want
to, and should be able to, install the live system to the latter.)

[Bug 497107] Re: package flashplugin-installer 10.0.32.18ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2009-12-21 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error caused by a corrupted
archive. Please execute the following commands, as it will clear your
package cache, in a terminal:

sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-installer.{postinst,prerm,postrm}
sudo apt-get remove --purge flashplugin-installer
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue. If so please set the bug's status to Invalid. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 497175] Re: This program do not read every pdf files. I can send an exemple. Give me an adress.

2009-12-21 Thread Dennis Sheil
Problem is in either libpoppler-glib4 0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1 or libpoppler5
0.12.0-0ubuntu2.1 dependency, not evince. Evince works for sample pdf
when linked against pre-0.11.2 poppler libraries. ePDFView acts in the
same manner, working in earlier libraries, breaking on popper
post-0.11.1 libraries, further pointing to poppler

** Package changed: evince (Ubuntu) => poppler (Ubuntu)

[Bug 445810] Re: usb-creator operates on mounted filesystems, does not display confirmation dialogs, issue warnings about data loss

2009-12-21 Thread Michał Gołębiowski
I'm against listing ALL partitions on local disks - they are displayed
with warning yellow triangles anyway so why even display them? It can
lead to a severe file system damage if an inexperienced user tries
this...

Of course, all pendrive partitions should be visible. For most users
pendrive already has only one partition so it's not a problem.

[Bug 485089] Re: Revelation applet icons missing, the drop down menu doen't show the icons left to the entry name

2009-12-21 Thread Bart Veldstra
This is intended behaviour, based on the default configuration for Gnome
in Karmic.

To change this, go to System->Preferences->Appearance->Interface and
tick the box with "Show icons in menus". Revelation, along with the rest
of the GTK applications, will display the entry icons again.

I will mark this bug as 'Invalid' since it is merely a configuration
problem.

[Bug 493417] Re: Segmentation fault after clicking "Get Mail" in a few folders.

2009-12-21 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Could you please generate an apport
crash report for this?
You can enable apport for one instance like this:
sudo service apport start force_start=1

I am marking this invalid as apport will open a new bug when the crash
is generated. If it does not, you can reset the status of this one to
New and we will try something else.

Which confirm my idea: it run under sh instead of perl

Note that, strangely, if you run it without root priviledges (as normal user),
it says:
$ /usr/bin/perl /etc/init.d/ebox usage
Cannot change user to ebox at /usr/share/perl5/EBox.pm line 137.

Which let me think it run correctly as perl executable.

[Bug 426417] Re: broken menus at Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 with intel-2.8.1/2.9

2009-12-21 Thread Sebastian Thürrschmidt
I'm seeing the same problem as matangdilis, i.e. clicking on the Country
dropdown in Location will freeze my display. I can still move the mouse
pointer, but I can't click anything. Have to log in from another machine
and reboot from the command line. Just restarting gmd won't do.

The Country dropdown works fine on my other machine, which has an Intel
Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev
03) and where Stellarium doesn't need the workaround. So it seems these
two issues are related after all.

I haven't tried any other dropdown lists so far.

[Bug 486393] Re: Sync libsfml 1.5+repack1-2 (universe) from Debian testing (main)

2009-12-21 Thread Steve Langasek
libsfml was not being synced because it had been blacklisted due to an
orig.tar.gz mismatch. Now that there's a new upstream version in
Debian, this is no longer an issue, so I've unblacklisted and synced the
package.

[Bug 499343] [NEW] Buffer I/O error: All optical drives fail to read media after a period of time, requiring a reboot to rectify Karmic 9.10

2009-12-21 Thread cleary

$ uname -a

Hi,
I'm not sure which package would be causing this issue -

Symptoms: I can read and burn dvds consistently on my machines internal drive
without an issue, but after a period, the discs stop being recognised, and
dmesg spits out the following error when a blank dvd is inserted:
$ dmesg
...

[540928.685595] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

At this point, if I plug in an external dvd-burner and insert the blank dvd
into it, the same error appears for this new drive:
$ dmesg

[542849.340207] Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 0

which implies that the entire optical device subsystem has gotten itself
in a tangle.

Rebooting allows both the drives to operate as per normal again - the
period it took for this failure was 6 days of constant uptime (no
suspend/hibernate), burning ~5 DVDs a day. Prior to this it was
happening every 2-3 days under the same conditions, so the period for
failure doesn't seem to be consistent.

[Bug 499342] [NEW] gnome-vfs + cifs via Nautilus prevent suspend

2009-12-21 Thread hachre
Public bug reported:

I'm sorry I don't know which package to file this bug under.

I'm on a MacBook Pro 5,1 running Ubuntu 9.10 x64.
I was pleased to see that after the installation my suspend worked fine.
At some point during usage I noticed that it had stopped working.
After hours of narrowing down the cause I found it.

When I have an active mount of my samba server running via Nautilus the suspend
fails.
This does not happen when I mount the server directly on the command line using
mount -t cifs or mount -t smbfs.

It only happens when it has been mounted via Nautilus.

Unmounting the samba share makes suspend work again.

Please feel free to ask for more info, I have no clue what to attach here to
help you narrow it down.
Sorry again I didn't attach this to a proper package, but the way I see it the
bug might be in one of the many packages I have no real knowledge of.

[Bug 375905] Re: Mouse focus gets stuck over control objects

2009-12-21 Thread MrLogistiX
I have the same issue using a Logitech MX1100 mouse on clean install of
Ubuntu 9.10, re-re-retired Dell Dimension 2400. Found a workaround, but
no fix: when the mouse stops responding (usually after switching back to
the KVM port the Linux box is connected to), I power the mouse off using
the switch on the bottom, then wait 5 secs or so, power back up. Has
worked every time so far. I was THIS close to scrapping Karmic for, I
dunno, anything? until I tried this. BTW, unplugging, right-clicking,
etc, never worked.

xview (3.2p1.4-24) unstable; urgency=low

  * Compile with -D_GNU_SOURCE for glibc 2.9 compatibility in regex.h.
Closes: #544252
  * Added Recommends: xviewg-dev, xutils-dev to xview-examples since the
example sources need the header files from these packages for
compilation.
  * Moved /etc/X11/xview/textswrc to /usr/share/doc/xviewg/examples/textswrc
since it's never read there by XView and servers only as an example
for copying into ~/.textswrc

[Bug 445810] Re: usb-creator operates on mounted filesystems, does not display confirmation dialogs, issue warnings about data loss

2009-12-21 Thread Daniel Richard G.
I'd also point out Bug #443330 and Bug #446891, which have a similar
thrust.

I would only demur on the delisting of partition devices---I'd like to
be able to install the live system onto one partition of a multi-
partition USB drive (e.g. partition 1 is data, and is what comes up
under Windows, like a "normal" thumbdrive; partition 2 contains Ubuntu).
Everything else is thumbs-up.

[Bug 311506] Re: Smooth Scrolling

2009-12-21 Thread mac_v
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- There is no easy or quick fix for this bug , Hence not a papercut.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 499337] [NEW] gdm doesn't re-login after logout when autologin and timedlogin are enabled Karmic 9.10

2009-12-21 Thread cleary
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

$ apt-cache policy gdm
gdm:
  Installed: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1
  Candidate: 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1
  Version table:
 *** 2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1 0
500 http://gulf karmic-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gulf karmic/main Packages

If I configure autologin in gdm, it works for the initial login in a gdm
session. Upon choosing logout from the Session menu, it does not auto login
again.
If the gdm service is restarted, autologin will work again as expected for the
initial session, but logout fails again.

The expected behaviour is that upon logging out, the gdm will honour the
autologin and timedlogin options configured in /etc/gdm/custom.conf

# cat /etc/gdm/custom.conf

[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=ubuntu
TimedLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=ubuntu

[Bug 446891] Re: Should warn that formatting will erase the entire contents of the device (all partitions).

2009-12-21 Thread Daniel Richard G.
I got burned by this too, though I was fortunate not to have lost as
much as others have here. Jesus Christ, this app is the software
equivalent of Happy Fun Ball. Thank God it doesn't let you select fixed
disks.

* Hitting "Format" when a partition-device is selected should only
format the partition. (I wanted to just create a new filesystem instead
of manually deleting the files of the old Ubuntu CD-ROM. Reasonable,
yes?)

* Hitting "Format" when a whole-disk-device containing multiple
partitions is selected should prompt that the existing partition table
will be wiped. (Programs that modify partition tables, as standard
convention, use *extreme caution* and extensive user prompting so that
they do not accidentally destroy data. We, as users, have come to expect
this, because we have a lot of time/effort/money invested in our data
and will shy away from anything that puts it at undue risk. Not only
does this program flagrantly violate that user expectation and need to
be fixed, whoever was responsible for that aspect of the design needs to
be retrained. If you're a developer, you DO NOT write programs like
this, unless you're a rank amateur, or you have malicious intent. No one
who thinks an app with this behavior is acceptable should have commit
access to Canonical repositories.)

* Hitting "Format" when an existing filesystem is detected should prompt
that DATA WILL BE DESTROYED, just as the regular installer already does
when partitioning/formatting disks (see Bug #443330, and the above
editorial).

evgheni, why is this bug not assigned to usb-creator-hackers?
