[Bug 537865] Re: ssh crashes nautilus and gnome-panel [lucid]
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- ssh crashes nautilus and gnome-panel [lucid] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537865 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: banshee Karmic 64-bit I am not sure if it is banshee or notify-osd, but i've only seen it happen when banshee does the notificating. This is what happens: at some point, a banshee notification pops up (f.i. to tell us what's playing). It might disappear completely or only half (30% transparent). Next thing that happens is that you can't touch the inside of a window anymore. Nothing works: can't type in it, can't block and copy things. (F.i. firefox is open; when the bug happens, you can't type a new URL in the address bar; can't fill in a form, etc). But you can still drag the window around the screen. You can also still move focus from one window to another (clicking on the window makes it active). You can't close or minimize the window. The gnome-panel accepts clicks, and the icon depresses (like it was activated) but the attached program (for instance Force Quit) won't start. After that, you can't use the gnome-panel at all anymore. The only thing you can do is drag windows around the screen. (They stay 'clean', i.e. they don't 'trail' images of themselves around the desktop). Going to another machine and remotely login (since Alt-Ctrl-F1 don't work no more neither) and look at top, there is (for example) a notify- osd which takes 6.9 % of total RAM (3GB ram in machine). Killing the notify-osd (SIGHUP) frees up X. Suddenly the Force Quit app shows up (that was the last click on the Gnone-panel) and everything works again. Instead of killing notify-osd, it's also possile to pkill -9 banshee. This will also free X. I have no way of reliably reproducing the bug. banshee: Installed: 1.5.1-1 Candidate: 1.5.1-1 Version table: *** 1.5.1-1 0 500 http://bika karmic/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status notify-osd: Installed: 0.9.24-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 0.9.24-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 0.9.24-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://bika karmic/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: banshee (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Notification area causes X to freeze (caused by banshee) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 535572] Re: System hard locks with 2.6.33 mainline
I switched over to the Lucid kernel 2.6.32-16 as I saw that the RV740 initialization fix was backported. With that kernel the system hard locks too! There is a strange thing happening with both kernels too that might be related to this: After some idle time of the system it begins to stop screen updates whenever the mouse is not moving or I'm not typing on the keyboard. It even freezes (visually) when watching a video that doesn't consume much CPU time. I first thought this might be an issue for the graphics driver but then noticed that the monitoring graphs do not jump when the screen froze and wake it up again by simply typing or moving the mouse. So the whole thing of gathering data and up to displaying them in some applet or so stops. This does occur even when running something in a terminal: $ while [ 0 ]; do oldtime=$time; time=`date +'%s.%N'`; echo ($time - $oldtime - 1) * 1000 | bc -l | xargs printf [$time] missed %1.0f ms\n; sleep 1; done [1268384756.719304336] missed 1268384755 ms [1268384760.956376208] missed 3237 ms [1268384761.969785663] missed 13 ms [1268384762.989047073] missed 19 ms [1268384764.008941132] missed 20 ms [1268384765.027888570] missed 19 ms [1268384766.047799420] missed 20 ms [1268384767.067276339] missed 19 ms [1268384768.085794982] missed 19 ms [1268384769.105963537] missed 20 ms [1268384774.316241301] missed 4210 ms [1268384775.72425] missed 17 ms [1268384776.352990352] missed 20 ms [1268384777.372331300] missed 19 ms [1268384778.391534041] missed 19 ms [1268384779.411323055] missed 20 ms [1268384780.430166883] missed 19 ms [1268384790.774276584] missed 9344 ms [1268384791.795092061] missed 21 ms [1268384794.283809211] missed 1489 ms [1268384795.303478736] missed 20 ms [1268384797.004297712] missed 701 ms [1268384798.019775137] missed 15 ms [1268384799.038297034] missed 19 ms [1268384800.056771282] missed 18 ms [1268384801.937260241] missed 880 ms [1268384802.954018928] missed 17 ms [1268384821.527875748] missed 17574 ms [1268384822.544634286] missed 17 ms [1268384823.564795546] missed 20 ms [1268384824.583885167] missed 19 ms This does not occur when the system is under heavy fire. I have the same bug, only there is nothing on my panel. I use the weather applets, typing notification and mail monitor, but I used them for several ubuntus now. [Bug 401497] Re: wrong keyboard layout after upgrade with autologin
I'm attaching a script which should make the situation more bearable for system admins. To summarize the problem: = * In some countries, two layouts are needed by default. * Console-setup correctly supports that, e.g. XKBLAYOUT='[us,gr]'. * Gdm makes the wrong assumption that only one layout can be the system default so it only keeps the first one, e.g. [us]. That's broken behavior. A proposed fix for gdm, *without any UI changes*: = * In the login screen, there's a combo box with all the possible keyboard layouts. * Gdm could just add an additional, default entry there: [Use the system default layouts] * That entry should be selected by default. * If the user selected that entry, gdm should copy the system defaults from console-setup to the gconf keys (see the attached script). Until gdm is fixed, sysadmins could use the attached script like this: == * Copy it to /usr/bin/apply-system-default-layout * chmod +x /usr/bin/apply-system-default-layout * cat EOF /etc/xdg/autostart/apply-system-default-layout [Desktop Entry] Name=Apply the system default layout Exec=/usr/bin/apply-system-default-layout OnlyShowIn=GNOME; Icon=preferences-desktop-keyboard Terminal=false Type=Application EOF * The default system layout would then be applied to all users. But some users may need a different layout than the system default. Those users should disable the script from System Preferences Startup programs. ** Attachment added: apply-system-default-layout http://launchpadlibrarian.net/40864361/apply-system-default-layout -- wrong keyboard layout after upgrade with autologin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/401497 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 537960] [NEW] power button shutdown doesn't work on headless server
Public bug reported: Version: Ubuntu 9.10 What I want: I've installed ubuntu on a mini-itx system which I use to stream music/personal website on my home network. In order to make it user friendly for my family, I want it to shut down automatically when the power switch is pressed. What works: When the server is plugged in to a monitor and booted up, and then the power button is pressed, it shuts down. If I'm logged in, it does it instantly because I've changed a setting using the gconf-editor. At the gdm-login screen, a dialog appears with a 60 second counter. When the counter hits zero, the machine shuts down. If I log into the server using vncserver and hit the power button, it also shuts down correctly. What doesn't work: When the server is not plugged in to a monitor and booted up, pressing the power switch has no effect whatsoever. When I connect to the server using vnc, and select system-preference-power management and go to the 'general' tab, there is no 'shut down' option in the list for 'when the power button is pressed'; only suspend and hibernate are there. When the monitor is plugged in, this option is present. What I expect: That regardless of having a monitor connected, I can hit the power switch to shut down the machine. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: headless shutdown -- power button shutdown doesn't work on headless server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537960 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 535572] Re: System hard locks with 2.6.33 mainline
I'm currently using XFCE4 to see if the hard locks depend on some KDE thing to run (but I doubt that). At least I had the system running for about 10 hours staying in KDM, not logged in and it didn't lock up. Usually the system locks up within a few hours whether I'm actually using it or not. P.S.: The time lags I captured previously doesn't affect the logitech G15 keyboard clock (which is controlled by g15daemon in software too) so I immediately see when the system is locked when I come back to it. -- System hard locks with 2.6.33 mainline https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/535572 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 507837] Re: Desktop Effects prevents any window from stretching across dual monitors
I also have this problem. Apparently it's actually intended functionality, but I just find it annoying and stupid. I mean it's reasonable to only maximize to a single screen, but when resizing, it just refuses to do something that I explicitly request. That's just wrong. That being said, I would also like a maximize across all screens button sometimes. Is anybody at ubuntu looking at this, or do we have to complain to compiz upstream? To all subscribers with nvidia cards: Have you tried turning xinerama hints off? I remember that used to be possible in the nvidia drivers in the xorg.conf somehow. That way your window manager will not even know that you're runnning two screens, it will just think you have one big one with a weird geometry. That will of course break other things, but would probably work around this issue if it's imoprtant to you. I can't test it myself since I'm on ATI at the moment and don't know how to do it there. -- Desktop Effects prevents any window from stretching across dual monitors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 460328] Re: Wrong keyboard settings when console-settings has multiple layouts
the issue has been discussed on IRC, the multiple layouts is not a bug and required for non latin configurations which need to have both their layout and an us one to be able to type chars in the different alphabets they are using, gdm and GNOME should have the same layout list and allow switching between those -- Wrong keyboard settings when console-settings has multiple layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/460328 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
