[Bug 537942] [NEW] Add label to distinguish installed from candidate versions in Changes for the versions text

2010-03-12 Thread Jesse Weinstein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

The three lines that start all update descriptions are: Changes for the
versions followed by two, unexplained, version strings. It would be
much better to simply add the words: Installed and New before the
respective version strings. It's a one-line change in MyCache.py (plus
changing the translations...)

2010-03-12 Thread Matt Zimmerman
It's getting difficult to verify my bugs with each Gwibber release in
Lucid, because there are new and different problems.

At the moment, I can't start Gwibber at all (it crashes on a 400 error
return from couchdb), so I can't say whether it can still get into this
state or not.

[Bug 537940] [NEW] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/kernel/power/suspend_test.c:53 suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90()

2010-03-12 Thread apavlov

I'm not sure how this issue relates to other issues in suspend_test.c:53
but since the suspend_test_finish+0x89/0x90() does not occur in any of
them, I'm filing a new bug.

The bang appears shortly after resuming from STR, and my Gnome session

[Bug 537865] Re: ssh crashes nautilus and gnome-panel [lucid]

2010-03-12 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

 If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

 If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

 If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
 I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 537390] Re: Lucid ubiquity installer hangs at 99% on install after requesting installer update

2010-03-12 Thread Pete Morris
Possibly unrelated, but I noted that when trying to install the latest
ubiquity under the Live CD environment (to check whether this bug had
been fixed) by typing sudo apt-get install ubiquity the response comes
back that there isn't enough disk space in /var/cache/apt/archives
(presumably mounted as a ram disk?)

Maybe the Update this installer is trying to download too much and it
runs out of space and bombs out the installation? Although there was no
mention of this in the logs that I could see. Just a thought.

[Bug 528618] Re: tla-buildpackage FTBFS

2010-03-12 Thread Michael Bienia
tla-buildpackage 0.9.14 contains a fix for the FTBFS but it depends on the
python-apt 0.8 API. A Feature Freeze exception is for the python-apt 0.8 API is
getting currently discussed in bug #531518.
I'd prefer to sync tla-buildpackage 0.9.14 if the python-apt 0.8 API gets into
lucid or undo the changes for the python-apt 0.8 API from tla-buildpackage
0.9.14.

[Bug 537949] [NEW] Sync idjc 0.8.1-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-03-12 Thread Alessio Treglia
Public bug reported:

Please sync idjc 0.8.1-4 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

This also fixes bug #525289.

Changelog entries since current lucid version 0.8.1-3:

idjc (0.8.1-4) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Pass the correct libexecdir path to the configure script rather than
move the files (Closes: #572271); bump urgency to medium, the package
is already in squeeze.
  * Fix launcher script to run idjc properly; thanks to Magnus Holmgren for
the patch.
  * Bump Standards.

[Bug 537946] [NEW] Notification area causes X to freeze (caused by banshee)

2010-03-12 Thread Ace Suares
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Karmic 64-bit

I am not sure if it is banshee or notify-osd, but i've only seen it
happen when banshee does the notificating.

This is what happens: at some point, a banshee notification pops up
(f.i. to tell us what's playing). It might disappear completely or only
half (30% transparent). Next thing that happens is that you can't touch
the inside of a window anymore. Nothing works: can't type in it, can't
block and copy things. (F.i. firefox is open; when the bug happens, you
can't type a new URL in the address bar; can't fill in a form, etc). But
you can still drag the window around the screen. You can also still move
focus from one window to another (clicking on the window makes it
active). You can't close or minimize the window.

The gnome-panel accepts clicks, and the icon depresses (like it was
activated) but the attached program (for instance Force Quit) won't
start. After that, you can't use the gnome-panel at all anymore. The
only thing you can do is drag windows around the screen. (They stay
'clean', i.e. they don't 'trail' images of themselves around the
desktop).

Going to another machine and remotely login (since Alt-Ctrl-F1 don't
work no more neither) and look at top, there is (for example) a notify-
osd which takes 6.9 % of total RAM (3GB ram in machine).

Killing the notify-osd (SIGHUP) frees up X. Suddenly the Force Quit app
shows up (that was the last click on the Gnone-panel) and everything
works again.

Instead of killing notify-osd, it's also possile to pkill -9 banshee.
This will also free X.

I have no way of reliably reproducing the bug.

[Bug 535572] Re: System hard locks with 2.6.33 mainline

2010-03-12 Thread Ancoron Luziferis
I switched over to the Lucid kernel 2.6.32-16 as I saw that the RV740
initialization fix was backported.

With that kernel the system hard locks too!

There is a strange thing happening with both kernels too that might be
related to this:

After some idle time of the system it begins to stop screen updates
whenever the mouse is not moving or I'm not typing on the keyboard. It
even freezes (visually) when watching a video that doesn't consume much
CPU time.

I first thought this might be an issue for the graphics driver but then
noticed that the monitoring graphs do not jump when the screen froze
and wake it up again by simply typing or moving the mouse. So the whole
thing of gathering data and up to displaying them in some applet or so
stops. This does occur even when running something in a terminal:

$ while [ 0 ]; do oldtime=$time; time=`date +'%s.%N'`; echo ($time - $oldtime
- 1) * 1000 | bc -l | xargs printf [$time] missed %1.0f ms\n; sleep 1; done

BTW , do we have the second patch Thomas Wood had added in Lucid

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-12 Thread Omer Akram
With these settings I had the problem for 4 hours and the next day when
I started ubuntu I had no problem with the new controls position rather
things look better as there nothing on the top right side. People
complain without even testing the change for a few hours. (Even when a
person wears new clothes it takes a bit time to adjust in them ;)

[Bug 525075] Re: Please merge maximus (0.4.14-1) from Debian Testing

2010-03-12 Thread Daniel Holbach
Regarding the patch: sorry, my mistake.

A few things:
 - The merged version should be 04.14-1ubuntu1.
 - I think you have the changelog entries also a bit wrong. remaining changes
should list all the changes that we have on top of the debian version.

(I don't see how your patch does these things for example:

+- Bumped up the Standards version to 3.8.4
+- Added VCS information
+- Updated package description
+- Removed x-window manager from Provides field and moved it to Depends

but there's a number of other things it does.

[Bug 537958] [NEW] genre tab displays numbers in magnatune catalogue instead of genre names

2010-03-12 Thread kristoffer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Most of the genres are only displayed as numbers in parentheses and not as the
name of the genre.
Some, like New Age, Classical, Rock, Electronic etc. are displayed (but
I do not know if this is for all artists within that genre or not), but most
are shown as for instance (10), (52) or (32).

Could this be a problem just for the Norwegian translation of the
program?

[Bug 401497] Re: wrong keyboard layout after upgrade with autologin

2010-03-12 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I'm attaching a script which should make the situation more bearable for
system admins.

To summarize the problem:
=
 * In some countries, two layouts are needed by default.
 * Console-setup correctly supports that, e.g. XKBLAYOUT='[us,gr]'.
 * Gdm makes the wrong assumption that only one layout can be the system
default so it only keeps the first one, e.g. [us].
That's broken behavior.

A proposed fix for gdm, *without any UI changes*:
=
 * In the login screen, there's a combo box with all the possible keyboard
layouts.
 * Gdm could just add an additional, default entry there:
   [Use the system default layouts]
 * That entry should be selected by default.
 * If the user selected that entry, gdm should copy the system defaults from
console-setup to the gconf keys (see the attached script).

Until gdm is fixed, sysadmins could use the attached script like this:
==
 * Copy it to /usr/bin/apply-system-default-layout
 * chmod +x /usr/bin/apply-system-default-layout
 * cat EOF  /etc/xdg/autostart/apply-system-default-layout
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Apply the system default layout
Exec=/usr/bin/apply-system-default-layout
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;
Icon=preferences-desktop-keyboard
Terminal=false
Type=Application
EOF
 * The default system layout would then be applied to all users.
   But some users may need a different layout than the system default.
   Those users should disable the script from System Preferences Startup
programs.

[Bug 537960] [NEW] power button shutdown doesn't work on headless server

2010-03-12 Thread Jon Black
Public bug reported:

Version: Ubuntu 9.10

What I want:
I've installed ubuntu on a mini-itx system which I use to stream music/personal
website on my home network. In order to make it user friendly for my family, I
want it to shut down automatically when the power switch is pressed.

What works:
When the server is plugged in to a monitor and booted up, and then the power
button is pressed, it shuts down. If I'm logged in, it does it instantly
because I've changed a setting using the gconf-editor. At the gdm-login screen,
a dialog appears with a 60 second counter. When the counter hits zero, the
machine shuts down. If I log into the server using vncserver and hit the power
button, it also shuts down correctly.

What doesn't work:
When the server is not plugged in to a monitor and booted up, pressing the
power switch has no effect whatsoever. When I connect to the server using vnc,
and select system-preference-power management and go to the 'general' tab,
there is no 'shut down' option in the list for 'when the power button is
pressed'; only suspend and hibernate are there. When the monitor is plugged in,
this option is present.

What I expect:
That regardless of having a monitor connected, I can hit the power switch to
shut down the machine.

[Bug 535572] Re: System hard locks with 2.6.33 mainline

2010-03-12 Thread Ancoron Luziferis
I'm currently using XFCE4 to see if the hard locks depend on some KDE
thing to run (but I doubt that). At least I had the system running for
about 10 hours staying in KDM, not logged in and it didn't lock up.

Usually the system locks up within a few hours whether I'm actually
using it or not.

P.S.: The time lags I captured previously doesn't affect the logitech
G15 keyboard clock (which is controlled by g15daemon in software too) so
I immediately see when the system is locked when I come back to it.

[Bug 507837] Re: Desktop Effects prevents any window from stretching across dual monitors

2010-03-12 Thread sanktnelson
I also have this problem. Apparently it's actually intended
functionality, but I just find it annoying and stupid. I mean it's
reasonable to only maximize to a single screen, but when resizing, it
just refuses to do something that I explicitly request. That's just
wrong. That being said, I would also like a maximize across all
screens button sometimes.

Is anybody at ubuntu looking at this, or do we have to complain to
compiz upstream?

To all subscribers with nvidia cards: Have you tried turning xinerama
hints off? I remember that used to be possible in the nvidia drivers in
the xorg.conf somehow. That way your window manager will not even know
that you're runnning two screens, it will just think you have one big
one with a weird geometry. That will of course break other things, but
would probably work around this issue if it's imoprtant to you. I can't
test it myself since I'm on ATI at the moment and don't know how to do
it there.
