[Bug 375155] Re: Suspend & Hibernate don't work

2010-10-06 Thread Geert-Jan van Leeuwen
I have a similar problem.
When I just try to suspend my MSI megabook S262, it enters suspend and the led
flashes. After I press the power button again, the DVD-drive reads a few times
and nothing else happens. It is still frozen. No display, no HD activity, no
CPU-fan activity...

I tried https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume
and typed (and the other three too):

# echo core > /sys/power/pm_test
# echo reboot > /sys/power/disk
# echo disk > /sys/power/state
# dmesg > /tmp/dmesg-core-reboot.txt

and everything seems to work, though the computer does not completely
enter suspend mode then. The screen goes blank and comes back up again
and the HD seems to stop and start again etc.

Some time ago I also played around with s2ram and the best I got out of
that was a cpu fan that started spinning after suspend.

I tried https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend
too, but the hash never matched (am I doing anything wrong?)

I also ran the test script from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting
and didn't get any further than the person above me here.

if there are any other tests that I can run and results I could attach,
please tell me. I've gotten quite handy with ubuntu lately.

reliable remote programming platform. This is too bad.

2010-10-06 Thread Makoto
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I've had this problem ever since Intrepid. It hasn't bothered me as
much, but since now ath5k is totally open source, maybe there can be a
  fix.

  OS: Ubuntu Jaunty/Karmic
Drivers: Madwifi (madwifi) for Jaunty and ath5k for Karmic.

All other system information can be found inside of the tar file. The
system I've used is still the same.

It seems that on occasion my wireless card will refuse to turn on during
specific boots. There's no error message as to why it wouldn't turn on,
but it just...doesn't. I've been tracking this bug since June of this
year, and I have enough information (hopefully) for a developer to look
  into it.

- Attached is a tar of the files (both when it did and did not work), and
- the custom DSDT I had to use to resolve bug #272247.

[Bug 555408] Re: Shotwell makes USB mouse flaky

2010-10-06 Thread Jim Nelson
Sebastien,

This is all very interesting! We do not use MTP (or libmtp), but we do
use gphoto2, which does a device query in order to locate connected
cameras. We also query the udev system looking for cameras on our own
in order to properly associate a USB ID with gphoto2's names. (Long
story.)

Although I can't say the bugs you've linked to completely shed light on
what's going on here, it does point to some possible problems. It's
interesting that the Kensington mouse comes up again in another bug and
is specifically mentioned in the patch. As mentioned earlier, we
acquired the mouse but couldn't repro it here.

I need more time to look at all this information more thoroughly.
Thanks for the links!

Thanks. I will try to provide feedback on your package hopefully

I also like Erik Reuter's idea of a timeout which I think would be a
viable alternative in the event the consensus was that BOOTWAIT should
be the default. This is assuming that prompt/error messages were
corrected to display in all scenarios. This would also accommodate
server configurations .

[Bug 653714] Re: X display shows garbage w/ nouveau & Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 Go AGP rev a1 (NV28)

2010-10-06 Thread John Navitsky
As a workaround, I was able to get the nvidia-96 drivers working, but it
isn't quite seamless. First, I removed all nvidia packages that were
currently installed (with --purge), then selected and installed the
nvidia-96 drivers by searching "nvidia" within the "Ubuntu Software
Center" and selecting "nvidia-96".

At this point the display would not start with the xorg.conf generated
by the "nvidia-xconfig" utility. If you tried to start X with this
xorg.conf file, you'd get a complaint that it couldn't find the nvidia
driver.

Without an xorg.conf file, X would start, but set to a lower resolution
with no ability to switch to 1920x1200.

At some point, I wondered if the nouveau driver was conflicting. I
removed the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package (again with --purge) and
then (with no xorg.conf file) the nvidia 96 driver started working
correctly with full resolution.

So the working config is:

jo...@johnn-craylap:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep -i nvidia
nvidia-96 install
nvidia-glx-96 install
nvidia-settings install
jo...@johnn-craylap:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep -i nouve
libdrm-nouveau1 install
jo...@johnn-craylap:~$ ls -al /etc/X11/xorg.conf

[Bug 655275] Re: allow 32-bit module build on 64-bit host

2010-10-06 Thread Alex Chiang
Ok, I checked with mjg59.

He says that the only difference between 386/586/686 flavors of RHEL is
the kernel config, which leads to different compiler optimizations. The
ARCH string has nothing to do with that.

So passing either "i386" or "x86" to force a 32-bit build is perfectly
safe, even for RHEL.

Alternatively, you could just read the top-level kernel Makefile and
search for "uname -m". You'll see what we do with SUBARCH and ARCH; a
little further down, you can see the x86-specific section for SRCARCH.

I think the patch might break if we try to build a 64-bit module on a
32-bit host, I haven't tested that combo; but it should be extremely
rare anyway.

[Bug 655745] Re: Network Manager uses wrong 3G modem

2010-10-06 Thread David Monniaux
I have found the source of the problem. When I established the broadband
profile, the Dongle had not yet been fully recognized by the kernel (it
is a bit slow - need to start USB-storage and MMC devices, then activate
the tty ports). As a consequence, it was created using device 0
(internal GSM). Thus, regardless of what network manager saw as
currently active devices, it always tried to use device 0.

One problem is that the interface for defining profiles does not show to
which device the profile is associated, nor does it allow changing it.

So rather than a true-blooded bug it's a conjunction of slow detection
of devices and some user interface lacking relevant information and
controls.

[Bug 633370] Re: package gconf2 2.31.91-0ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: No such file or directory: '/usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu'

2010-10-06 Thread Michael Vogt
It looks like we have two issues here:
a) update-gconf-defaults should check if the file actually exists (for broken
symlinks)
b) edubuntu-artwork needs remove the symlink

2010-10-06 Thread Michael Vogt
This is a dangling symlink from the previous package it seems, the lucid
version has:

  echo "Setting desktop defaults ..."
  if [ -L /usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu ]; then
rm -f /usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu
ln -s /usr/share/edubuntu-artwork/gconf/$theme
/usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu
  else
ln -s /usr/share/edubuntu-artwork/gconf/$theme
/usr/share/gconf/defaults/20-edubuntu
  fi

[Bug 655747] Re: Adobe Reader and Acrobat Font Parsing Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

2010-10-06 Thread Marcel Stimberg
Thank you for your bug report. I confirmed the bug because the CVE
exists and seems to apply to the version(s) in Ubuntu.

For future bug reports: You can mark bugs as "security bugs" yourself
(that will subscribe the Ubuntu Security Team) and you can also link a
CVE. I now did this for this report.

[Bug 655849] Re: /etc/bash_completion.d/mutt quotes tilde which cannot be expanded by bash (or: why is query_command invoked at this place at all?)

2010-10-06 Thread Gernot Salzer

** Attachment added: "Dependencies.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/655849/+attachment/1675470/+files/Dependencies.txt

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: bash-completion
-
- Package: bash-completion
- Further packages involved: mutt, bash
-
- General information
-
- Release: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
-
- $ apt-cache policy bash-completion
- bash-completion:
- Installed: 1:1.1-3ubuntu2
- Candidate: 1:1.1-3ubuntu2

- 500 http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/ubuntu/archive/ lucid/main
Packages
- 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  Expected vs observed behaviour
  ===
  When typing
  $ mutt -f =k
bash-completion should offer mailboxes starting with "k"

Instead, bash gives the error message
$ mutt -f =kbash: ~/.mutt/muttquery: No such file or directory

Bug 1: Completion produces a bash error
Bug 2: Completion executes mutt's query_command, which is intended for
retrieving email addresses, not mail boxes

  Analysis
  ===
  - Pressing invokes bash completion, which calls "_muttquery" from
/etc/bash_completion.d/mutt
  - "_muttquery" calls "mutt -Q query_command", which in my case returns the
string
  query_command="~/.mutt/muttquery '%s'"
  - "_muttquery" extracts the substring "~/.mutt/muttquery '%s'" (without
surrounding quotes), replaces %s by "'\''k'\''" (without surrounding quotes),
and then executes the bash command
  '~/.mutt/muttquery' ''\''k'\'''

Since the tilde is quoted by single quotes, bash does not expand it to
the home dir, but interprets it literally. Hence the observed bash error
  message.

Bug 1: Completion should not single-quote tildes which are expected to be
expanded by bash.
Bug 2: Completion should not call _muttquery since there is no mail address
expected after "-f ="

[Bug 655852] [NEW] Vala potentially infringes on a number of Microsoft patents

2010-10-06 Thread David Nielsen
Public bug reported:

full information: http://linuxpatents.blogspot.com/2010/05/language-
envy.html

It appears that Vala may be infringing on a number of Microsoft patents
covered by the Community Promise without fulfilling the requirements for
coverage. Considering that much of Unity is built using Vala it would be
nice to have clarity on the matter, requesting legals insight on the
matter.

[Bug 629910] Re: nvidia 256.53 xorg-server 1.9.0 performance regression with antialiased text

2010-10-06 Thread quiricada
@auxbuss

after grub
it goes blank for about 20 seconds
then the nvidia logo comes up for about 1 minute
then the generic background comes up for about 15 seconds
then my chosen photo background comes up for about 15 seconds
then the top and bottom panel appears
then the gnome-do window
then another 5 - 10 seconds before the mouse become responsive and everything
becomes "normal"

also (forgot to add this to my previous post)
on shutdown
everything freeze for about 2 minutes before the usual ubuntu shutdown routine
of scrolling shutdown messages etc starts to roll
