[Bug 692878] [NEW] restart of firefox is disrupted. Closed firefox still running in hidden, and reopening of firefox calls message "firefox is allready running"

2010-12-20 Thread jevgtv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

restart of firefox is disrupted. Closed firefox still running in hidden,
and reopening of firefox calls message "firefox is allready running"

It is possible to overcome the mistake by closing the firefox from
system monitor - firefox-bin - end process. But closing by usual way
does not work (it closes only visible window, not the process).

Hi.
I could not figure out how to make it work, and ended up finding a fix in

In Pidgin preferences -> sound -> i changed Method: from Automatic to Alsa.
That fixed it in Pidgin.
For Mplayer the problem seems to have disappeared. But i use VLC half the times.

[Bug 186103] Re: [K8M800] Panel on K8M800 is not supported (Averatec 3280)

2010-12-20 Thread Peter Belew
See http://www.openchrome.org/trac/ticket/366 - The initial screen res
seems to be set at 1024x768, and switching to/from text screens works
too, with r891 of the OpenChrome driver. This is with Ubuntu 11.04
updated as of today.

Note that ~/.config/monitors.xml has been removed - this contains the
res set in the Monitors dialog. So the initial res is detected properly
by the driver.

Thanks, Bartosz!

[Bug 647128] Re: "Search" line causes kernel panic on fresh 10.10 install

2010-12-20 Thread cactaur
The workaround steps seem awfully familiar to those in Bug #403408.
However, the root causes seem to be different because this is in 10.10,
while the previous one was fixed in 10.04, and that this bug causes a
kernel panic, and is not evidenced by a "disk not found" error.

Another odd behavior is that if the UUID is changed in the GRUB menu to
something which does not exist, Ubuntu boots up just fine. It is only
the correct UUID that causes the problems with the kernel panic.
Additionally, I tried removing the "set root=(hd(0,2)) entry in hopes
that maybe it's conflicting with the search line. However, this does not
fix the problem, so the culprit appears to be the search line alone.

[Bug 89025] Re: mpage does not produce usable output from postscript files (Dapper and Hardy)

2010-12-20 Thread Ben Blout
This bug appears to be resolved in 10.04
mpage now produces usable output from both text and postcript files.

** Changed in: mpage (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired => New

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: mpage

On a dapper system, the command
- mpage filename.ps
+ mpage filename.ps
produces pages that appear as blank output in ggv and on my printer, for all
postscript files I have tried.

  Likewise, the command
- mpage filename.txt
+ mpage filename.txt
produces apparently blank pages for text files. However, the workaround
suggested in bug #58236 does work for text files, so this command:
  mpage filename.txt | grep -v '^\/uni'
- produces usable output when fed text files.
+ produces usable output when fed text files.

  However, my ignorant attempt:
  mpage filename.ps | grep -v '^\/uni'
  does not produce usable output.

[Bug 647128] Re: "Search" line causes kernel panic on fresh 10.10 install

2010-12-20 Thread cactaur
** Description changed:

  Background:
The hardware I am installing on is a Sony VAIO PCG-FRV26. It previously had
Ubuntu 10.04 running on it without any problems. The previous partitioning
scheme was
  /dev/sda2 | /boot | 2 GB | ext2
  /dev/sda3 | / | 36 GB | ext4
  /dev/sda1 | swap | 2 GB | swap
In the spirit of testing, I decided to try Maverick Beta.

  Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Download and burn Ubuntu Maverick Beta. Do the checksum and CD Integrity
checks to make sure the disk isn't corrupted.
[These steps may or may not be relevant]
  2. Boot from the CD, and when prompted, use "Try Ubuntu"
  3. Set up a wireless connection to the internet.
  4. Once the connection is established, double click "Install Ubuntu 10.10" to
begin the installation procedure.
  5. Select the default values until reaching "Partitioning"
  [Probably where something odd happens]
  6. Choose a custom partitioning scheme.

  8. Edit /dev/sda3, set it as an ext4 / partition. Format it.
  9. Click next and choose the defaults for the rest of the installation.
  10. Once the installation finishes, restart the computer and remove the CD.
  11. When the GRUB bootloader comes up, select the newly installed Ubuntu
10.10.

  What should happen:
Since this is a fresh install of Ubuntu, there shouldn't be any problems
booting it after the install. After all, there hasn't been an opportunity to
screw around with anything.

  What happens:
Right after selecting Ubuntu from the GRUB menu, a kernel panic appears and
the Caps/Scroll lock lights start flashing. The computer does not do anything
after that. When booting in recovery mode, there is more verbose output. Here's
the output that results from that:

[0.761431] VFS: Cannot open root device
"UUID=3f45a729-2066-4d4f-ae80-3cb2a7c6c4f7" or unknown-block(0,0)

+ Workaround: Right after a power-on, press shift to enter the GRUB menu.
+ Highlight Ubuntu from the GRUB menu and press 'e' to edit the entry.
+ Navigate to the line that starts with "search --no-floppy --fs-uuid
+ --set ..." and delete that line. Press Ctrl+x to boot with the revised
+ entry and Ubuntu should boot up normally.
+
  Other information:
The first time I tried installing 10.10, I selected btrfs as the root
partition filesystem to try it out. I got a similar error message, except with
"UUID=..." replaced with "root=/dev/sda3". So it looks like the underlying
problem is still the same. I figured that btrfs was a beta filesystem and that
might be causing problems, so I installed again using ext4 as the root
filesystem, and got the error output above.

I also haven't been able to find any similar reports of this so my system
might somehow be an exception situation. But I can't imagine why, and someone
new to Ubuntu might not like being greeted with a kernel panic on their first
boot. So it would be really nice to figure out what the cause of this might be.
Thanks!

you could also try:

used.

Thats a live subversion server for the opensc project.

[Bug 506160] Re: xstartup apps not run when starting vnc server

2010-12-20 Thread Joe Areeda
I have a similar issue.
I believe it is an error in the creation of ~/.vnc/xstartup

It starts with:

#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
# unset SESSION_MANAGER
# exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

The problem is the exec. According to the sh man page:

"the shell process is replaced with the specified program (which must be
a real program, not a shell builtin or function)"

and xinitrc is a shell script. Removing the #'s and replacing exec with
"." (I believe it must be in col #1) solve the problem for me.

[Bug 692855] Re: polipo 1.0.4.1-1.1 segfaults inside ___vsnprintf_chk on connection failure when using unbound as a dns server

2010-12-20 Thread Leif Walsh
Never mind, the bug still occurs even with that line commented out, it's
got to be the logging stuff. I really would much rather it go to syslog
so this is a bit more critical for me.

I have a second backtrace and coredump, this time from it segfaulting
when printing a different error. Here is the backtrace:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x7f5d12bcc7aa in _IO_vfprintf_internal (s=0x7fff966ba1f0,

at vsnprintf_chk.c:65

The coredump will follow in another attachment. (please note these are
amd64 dumps)

If someone can get me the debugging symbols for polipo I can probably
debug this myself. It seems to just be a null pointer getting passed
into a printf somewhere but I can't see where it comes from.

[Bug 692617] Re: Please merge scummvm 1.2.1-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-12-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package scummvm - 1.2.1-2ubuntu1

---
scummvm (1.2.1-2ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable (LP: #692617). Remaining changes:
- debian/patches/ld-as-needed.diff:
+ Fix FTBFS with ld --as-needed.

scummvm (1.2.1-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Pass "--enable-release" to the configure script. This prevents
the build of a few "work in progress" engines, which upstream
doesn't see fit for general use yet.
  * Add a build conflict on liboss-salsa-dev to prevent the libsalsa
emulation library being present in the buildd chroots. ScummVM
itself builds fine with OSS support (Closes: #600655)

[Bug 321040] Re: sesman crashes on second login

2010-12-20 Thread Konstantin Kasatkin
To Jon Ogilvie...

About auth line that samba adds to common config I think following: if
you want to use user authentification from samba users repository it
must be in common-auth, but hardly someone uses this approach. I think
the problem is not in wrong location samba auth string, but the problem
in samba auth engine inplementation.

Once connecting via RDP configured to use xterm as window manager when I
entered wrong login-password pair I was asked credentials by samba auth
engine. That means that samba auth engine works, only works somehow
strange.

On my PC, it's possible to check the status with lm_sensors (called lm-
sensors in Debian based distros.)

Run "sensors" from the command line, or use the daemon "sensord". If the
fan is not working and the temperature exceeds some value, you'll see
the word "ALARM" in the output. For how to receive alarm automatically,
see the man page of sensord.

[Bug 647128] Re: Maverick Beta Kernel Panic - "VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0, 0)"

2010-12-20 Thread cactaur
I just found out that this might not be a kernel issue at all, and might
be a grub2 issue. When booting from GRUB, when I removed the line that
said

search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set f7aea5f9-577b-40b0-ab63-f58240cc94e1

Ubuntu boots up just fine on both the mainline kernel and the updated
kernel. When I boot with this line intact, the above error occurs with
the updated kernel, and an "Out of partition" error occurs with the
mainline kernel. So it seems like the search command is what is screwing
around with the kernel on boot. For more details on what might exactly
be the problem, I'll attach the grub.cfg file. In this system, the
f7aea5f9-577b-40b0-ab63-f58240cc94e1 UUID is the /boot partition on sda2
and 4cff9e74-9091-425f-95e8-dee6b63da0f3 UUID is the root partition on
sda3. I hope this issue can be resolved since it doesn't appear like
most people have had this kind of problem. For the one in the few people
who this might happen too, it might be a doozy.

[Bug 692855] [NEW] polipo 1.0.4.1-1.1 segfaults inside ___vsnprintf_chk on connection failure when using unbound as a dns server

2010-12-20 Thread Leif Walsh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: polipo

I recently changed my polipo config to do a bunch of things. In some
quick A/B testing, I think the change that caused this to start
happening was "pipelineAdditionalRequests = true". (the others were to
point to a local instance of unbound for recursive DNS resolution
(dnsNameServer = 127.0.0.1), and to log issues to syslog instead of its
own logfile (logFile = "", logSyslog = yes).)

Every few requests, it crashes with a segfault when printing an error
message, in ___vsnprintf_chk, but I don't have debugging symbols above
that call. I've attached my config file and a coredump after the
segfault, please advise as to how to continue debugging. For the
moment, I'm fairly convinced it's just that one config option
(pipelineAdditionalRequests), which I can live without, but it would be
nice to fix this, if only for other people that want that option.

Lets hope the big switch happens next year! Manufacturers developing
OpenSource
drivers by paying experienced and/or skilled OpenSource devs to do the work.
OpenSource distros decently installed on machines (and tweaked) in shops
along-side dual-boots and MicroSquished machines.

Merry Christmas to all that observe that holiday, and may everyone else have a
good time too :)

[Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)

2010-12-20 Thread jeramy smith
here is the gma 950 running metacity
jer...@jubuntu:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
87 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17.298 FPS
158 frames in 5.0 seconds = 31.352 FPS
69 frames in 5.1 seconds = 13.571 FPS
63 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12.557 FPS
92 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18.340 FPS

now, start the intel_gpu_top in another window and re-run
jer...@jubuntu:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
303 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.591 FPS
306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 61.147 FPS
306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 61.147 FPS
306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 61.149 FPS
306 frames in 5.0 seconds = 61.146 FPS

So, in theory, someone might be able to fix their Unity problem by
running a daemonized intel_gpu_top (or set it running in a detached
screen automatically). That is not a great workaround, but it might
work.

I have this behavior with both the current Ubuntu 10.10 kernel and with
the Natty backport kernel for LTS. So there are no fixes to intel drm at
the kernel level that fix this issue right now in any released/proposed
packaged kernel.

I have not tried different driver versions since the latest xorg intel
driver is basically unusable on the GMA 950.

To recap: Unity slowness on GMA 950 (the chip in tons of awesome
netbooks that shouldn't be overlooked) is probably due to drm or xorg
issues that aren't obvious to me at the moment. There might be an
existing bug against intel-drm in the kernel or against the xorg intel
driver for this very problem.
