[Bug 714705] Re: Candidate revision debhelper 8.1.0ubuntu1

  * Merge with Debian (LP: #714705); remaining changes:
- dh_installinit: Add --upstart-only and --onlyscripts-upstart modes.
- Add various autoscripts for above: postinst-upstart,
  postinst-upstart-replace, postinst-upstart-restart,
  prerm-upstart, prerm-upstart-norestart, preinst-removeconffile.
- dh_installudev: Change default init.d symlink priority to 40.
- dh_installchangelogs: Do not install upstream changelog in compat level
  7. This floods packages with huge upstream changelogs which take
  precious CD space.
- dh_strip, dh_makeshlibs: use triplet-objdump, triplet-objcopy and
  triplet-strip from cross-binutils when cross-compiling; Debian #412118.
- add dh_apparmor and autoscripts
- debian/rules: override build target to set executable bit for
dh_apparmor before actually running dh build, that is in order to get
  the manpage built for dh_apparmor.

2011-02-07 Thread William A Ellerbe
@Robert Roth - Thank you for the suggestion of using "sudo dpkg -i PATH-
TO-DEB-FILE" as a way to install VirtualBox 4.0 on my system. I tried
it, and was able to install VirtualBox successfully. No I'm reviewing
some tips from the VirtualBox forums to find solutions for the DKMS and
vbxdrv errors that some of us are running into. Thanks again for sharing
the tip kind sir.

[Bug 507723] Re: New Install 9.10 No boot Bios block3 damaged error.

2011-02-07 Thread JosephCarter
Hi everyone,

I'm in the same boat here. Toshiba Satellite, 1805-S204. Trying to
help out a relative having troubles with XP - installed Ubuntu 9.10 - it
worked, rebooted several times but only displayed 800x600. Was
planning on going back to XP, went to install, and BIOS (Block3) is
damaged" message also appeared here. only drive it wants to access is
the Floppy drive. don't have any floppies handy - and not seeing people
having success here.

Any feedback would be appreciated - have another older toshiba that i
was considering ubuntu on, definitely going to avoid until there is
resolution on this issue - too many laptops having coincidental BIOS
failure when installing Linux. not cool.

Right, good point. I've been monkeying with this, and i think the real
need is to be able to make sure that anything that needs access to users
and groups is blocked by nis, or ldap, or winbind, or puppet... Whatever
you use to provide users and groups, has to run first.

The appropriate thing to do is to Develop a policy of variable exporting
in upstart jobs.

env NEEDS_ID=1
export NEEDS_ID

adding that to all the services that need Ident would be awfully
painful. But having the generic network-services job that has been
proposed set it would allow us to just have postfix follow that job, and
have nis, winbind, etc use

start on starting NEEDS_ID=1

If something else like autofs needs to start before generic network
services it will have to export this variable. This decouples the
consumers and providers.

[Bug 656241] Re: Mixxx with ATI graphics card (using FGLRX) crashes Ubuntu

2011-02-07 Thread Gabriel M. Beddingfield

I built the 1.9-bzr branch (which includes the patch in comment 49), however it
causes a crash for me (Qt 4.6.2 and 4.7.1). I think it's an issue with Qt, so
I filed a bug with them:

http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTBUG-17284

Meanwhile, the patch doesn't validate the QGLContext pointer, nor does
it verify that QGLContext::create() was successful.

[Bug 650432] Re: update-manager (and other system wide settings tools) appear in Preferences menu instead of a System Administration menu

2011-02-07 Thread Jonathan Marsden
This is not an issue in update-manager at all. The issue is in the
lxmenu-data package.

Specifically, the package includes an Administration menu directory file

  lxde-settings-system.directory

However the /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-application.menu files does not use it.

As a result, many applications that are in Categories System and
Settings (that is, applications which change system wide settings, and
are therefore System Administration tools) are incorrectly located in
the Preferences submenu in LXDE.

Preferences is for per-user preferences, not system wide tools such as
"Users and Groups" (only in a rather weak sense can adding a new user to
a machine be considered a "preference"!).

One way to correct this is to edit the /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-
application.menu file so that it subdivides the System menu into two,
"Administration" and "System Tools", and then places all applications
with both System and Settings categories into the Administration menu.

[Bug 715024] [NEW] [Audigy2 - SB Audigy 4 [SB0610]] ALSA test tone not correctly played back

2011-02-07 Thread Ben
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit as a clean install. I have a
soundblaster audigy 4 and the sound is not working at all. I ran the
command 'sudo apt-get install gnome-mixer' and restarted the machine and
that did not fix it. The same command fixed the no sound issue on either
9.10 or 10.04.

[Bug 552311] Re: CONFIG_DMAR is not set

2011-02-07 Thread Stefan Lesicnik
Hi Andy,

I tried your kernel - system boots fine and seems to work. Unfortunately
it looks like my board doesn't support the pass-through, so I am unable
to test if it actually works.

>From what I've seen from upstream / fedora - it looks like with kvm its
fairly important and I would really like to see this change kept for
newer kernels.

If i can help in any other way, let me know.

[Bug 715020] [NEW] [Realtek ALC1200] Playback problem

2011-02-07 Thread quaff
Public bug reported:

Playback is distorted and cracky. I noticed that when I have alsamixer
open, and I change the volume with gnome-panel or my keyboard's volume
buttons, the PCM volume changes along with the Master volume. Playback
sounds properly when PCM is set around 81 (just below the red level).
But changing the volume globally changes the PCM also. I also noticed
that ALC1200 isn't listed in the supported devices on
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt .
I've also attached the output from alsa-info.sh.

Hope all this is useful!

[Bug 284443] Re: gdmsetup: Don't offer autologin for ecryptfs users

2011-02-07 Thread Robert Ancell
This is actually non-trivial as gdmsetup is run as an unprivileged user
and so wont necessarily be able to check ~/.ecryptfs/auto-mount. Would
it be OK for GDM to instead check for this and just select the logged in
user (i.e. prompt for a password) instead of logging in automatically?

[Bug 555689] Re: Hitting ESC when typing a message should clear the message

2011-02-07 Thread Jason Woofenden
Sorry for coming in a little late on this, but it's really horrible
having the input clear on escape. I push escape a lot (a habit I picked
up from using Vim a lot) and I don't ever want it to clear the input
field. There are a great many other Linux users with this habit too I'm
sure.

It is also just weird behavior. Where did this idea come from that esc
should clear the field?

Please, please make escape do nothing in the input field!

[Bug 656745] Re: notebook always crashes if on battery (dell vostro 3700 and others)

2011-02-07 Thread Vinay
I am facing the same problem. I have DELL VOstro 3700 with core i7,
NVIDIA, Broadcom 4313.

Earlier the system used to hang whenever I try to access wireless. I got
a work around for the same by uninstalling broadcom drivers those were
from Ubuntu repo, and downloaded from Broadcom website.

But the switching to battery problem is still there.

The system was shipped with 9.10, which I upgraded to 10.10. There the
problem started. The system would hang within minutes of switching to
battery. Then I thought of "upgrading" it further and tried to install
11.04, still no luck. I tried both 32bit and 64 bit for all these OS's
(except for 9.10 64-bit).

[Bug 715003] [NEW] Maverick netbook installation fails after first boot information on BeagleBoard

2011-02-07 Thread Kurt Taylor
Public bug reported:

I was not able to complete the installation process on my BeagleBoard C4 (not
Xm) using the image:
ubuntu-netbook-10.10-preinstalled-netbook-armel+omap.img.gz

Followed the process described on ->
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/OMAPMaverickInstall

The image comes up on the BeagleBoard to the graphic installer, it
gathers all the first boot information and then towards the end of the
configuration the installation fails. I was not able to get apport due
to there not being a full interface and menus available.

The message in the popup dialog is:

"Package operation failed"

Re: [Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2011-02-07 Thread Scott James Remnant
That being said, the current process tracker is very much not ideal.

I'm working on a new one, and will probably post in this week in the
form of a test program to be run and played with.

Removing users from audio group worked:

System -> Administration -> Users and Groups -> Advanced Settings -> User

Uncheck "Use audio devices", repeat for all users

Yet another reason why everyone in my household hates Linux by now.

[Bug 713950] Re: Improvement for zh-tw fontconfig settings of language-selector

2011-02-07 Thread Cheng-Chia Tseng
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: language-selector

Now the setting of 69-language-selector-zh-tw.conf picks up the Latin
fonts first, then fallback to Chinese fonts. By default, ubuntu only
installs DejaVu font family and WenQuanYi Micro Hei font.

However, there is no need to pick up the Latin fonts first. I am here to
propose to remove the Latin fonts (Bitstream and DejaVu family) in the
  configration for the reasons below:

  1. As far as I have known, WenQuanYi Micro Hei font provied all the
typefaces which DejaVu fonts have. There is no need to fallback.

  2. There is no evidence indicating mixing Latin characters provided by
Latin fonts with Chinese characters provided by CJK fonts will be the
best default experience. Actullay, that will sacrifice the consistency
when there is English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean text displaying on
the screen at the same time.

  3. Removing the Latin fonts in the configuration provides the best
- capibilty for Chinese with those programs which do not follow the
+ compatibilty for Chinese with those programs which do not follow the
fallback machenism of fontconfig, such as Evince. The programs like that
only pick up the first font, DejaVu font, and displaying squares for
  Chinese characters.

  4. People still have the freedom to edit the configuration or add new
rules, there is no harm removing those Latin font strings in zh_TW
  configuration.

Please consider to remove the Latin fonts prior to the CJK fonts.
