[Bug 507723] Re: New Install 9.10 No boot Bios block3 damaged error.
Hi everyone, I'm in the same boat here. Toshiba Satellite, 1805-S204. Trying to help out a relative having troubles with XP - installed Ubuntu 9.10 - it worked, rebooted several times but only displayed 800x600. Was planning on going back to XP, went to install, and BIOS (Block3) is damaged" message also appeared here. only drive it wants to access is the Floppy drive. don't have any floppies handy - and not seeing people having success here. Any feedback would be appreciated - have another older toshiba that i was considering ubuntu on, definitely going to avoid until there is resolution on this issue - too many laptops having coincidental BIOS failure when installing Linux. not cool. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507723 Title: New Install 9.10 No boot Bios block3 damaged error. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Right, good point. I've been monkeying with this, and i think the real need is to be able to make sure that anything that needs access to users and groups is blocked by nis, or ldap, or winbind, or puppet... Whatever you use to provide users and groups, has to run first. The appropriate thing to do is to Develop a policy of variable exporting in upstart jobs. env NEEDS_ID=1 export NEEDS_ID adding that to all the services that need Ident would be awfully painful. But having the generic network-services job that has been proposed set it would allow us to just have postfix follow that job, and have nis, winbind, etc use start on starting NEEDS_ID=1 If something else like autofs needs to start before generic network services it will have to export this variable. This decouples the consumers and providers. > > -- > You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber > of the bug. > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569757 > > Title: > NIS upstart dependancy broken for lucid > > Status in “nis” package in Ubuntu: > Triaged > > Bug description: > Binary package hint: nis > > NIS does not work on lucid: without upstart, it starts anytime, > unrelated to net-device-up events. I built the 1.9-bzr branch (which includes the patch in comment 49), however it causes a crash for me (Qt 4.6.2 and 4.7.1). [Bug 650432] Re: update-manager (and other system wide settings tools) appear in Preferences menu instead of a System Administration menu
This is not an issue in update-manager at all. The issue is in the lxmenu-data package. Specifically, the package includes an Administration menu directory file lxde-settings-system.directory However the /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-application.menu files does not use it. As a result, many applications that are in Categories System and Settings (that is, applications which change system wide settings, and are therefore System Administration tools) are incorrectly located in the Preferences submenu in LXDE. Preferences is for per-user preferences, not system wide tools such as "Users and Groups" (only in a rather weak sense can adding a new user to a machine be considered a "preference"!). One way to correct this is to edit the /etc/xdg/menus/lxde- application.menu file so that it subdivides the System menu into two, "Administration" and "System Tools", and then places all applications with both System and Settings categories into the Administration menu. The attached /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-application.menu file does exactly this. ** Attachment added: "Corrected lxde-applications.menu file" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/650432/+attachment/1837704/+files/lxde-applications.menu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/650432 Title: update-manager (and other system wide settings tools) appear in Preferences menu instead of a System Administration menu -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 284443] Re: gdmsetup: Don't offer autologin for ecryptfs users
This is actually non-trivial as gdmsetup is run as an unprivileged user and so wont necessarily be able to check ~/.ecryptfs/auto-mount. [Bug 555689] Re: Hitting ESC when typing a message should clear the message
Sorry for coming in a little late on this, but it's really horrible having the input clear on escape. I push escape a lot (a habit I picked up from using Vim a lot) and I don't ever want it to clear the input field. There are a great many other Linux users with this habit too I'm sure. It is also just weird behavior. Where did this idea come from that esc should clear the field? [Bug 656745] Re: notebook always crashes if on battery (dell vostro 3700 and others)
I am facing the same problem. I have DELL VOstro 3700 with core i7, NVIDIA, Broadcom 4313. Earlier the system used to hang whenever I try to access wireless. I got a work around for the same by uninstalling broadcom drivers those were from Ubuntu repo, and downloaded from Broadcom website. But the switching to battery problem is still there. The system was shipped with 9.10, which I upgraded to 10.10. There the problem started. The system would hang within minutes of switching to battery. Then I thought of "upgrading" it further and tried to install 11.04, still no luck. I tried both 32bit and 64 bit for all these OS's (except for 9.10 64-bit). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/656745 Title: notebook always crashes if on battery (dell vostro 3700 and others) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
