[Bug 886820] Re: [Kubuntu 11.10] Screen brightness control does not work on Samsung RV511 laptop

2012-03-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ivan Stetsenko, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please
attach the results following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight
? As well, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

YES, I do confirm both solutions:

- the bring-again-to-life commands for RW disks of Tom Jaeger (thjaeger)
on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/780117/comments/17

- the libisofs low priority fix of Cyrus Lien (cyruslien)

I've tested both on an fresh USB Live of Ubuntu 11.10.

Do you think this should be applied as a fix?

[Bug 964550] [NEW] No documented way of showing text boot screen

2012-03-25 Thread Mark Ellse
Public bug reported:

When booting from Ubuntu Precise CD the splash screen with the Ubuntu is
displayed, pressing ESC shows a text screen with progress details.
1. This is particularly useful when trying to find where a bug occurs on CD
bootup, but I think it is undocumented. Certainly it is not prominent in the
documentation at wiki.ubuntu.com.
2. I would document it myself but I don't know if it is a design feature that
is repeatable on all hardware.
3. It is also not clear what one is seeing. Pressing ESC again returns to the
splash screen with progress dots. Both this screen and the text output seem to
be on the Console 7.

Daniel, thanks for pointing to 862430 since I was affected by the recently

However for this one it might be worth extending my comment #2 where my
notebook (unity+wall) isn't affected by the flicker while it has the same
graphics card as the op [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] [1002:9712], using
open source radeon driver here, instead of Acer it's a HP 625 and it was a

[Bug 964555] [NEW] Totem shows wrong frame when pausing

2012-03-25 Thread Octavian Damiean
Public bug reported:

Basically when I watch a video and use the seeker to move back and then
pause, Totem will jump back to the location I moved it to, resuming
the video will start from that wrong location again.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Select a video and play it.
2. Pause the video.
3. Move the seeker backwards to some random location.
4. Resume the video.
5. Pause the video again.

Sometimes it will show you the location you have moved back to.

[Bug 961282] Re: linux-firmware not installed by default in the installer environment

2012-03-25 Thread Colin Watson
As discussed on IRC, linux-firmware is intentionally not installed due
to being a .deb, but nic-firmware and scsi-firmware (which are .udebs)
are.

The particular issue at hand here has been fixed in the linux-firmware
source package (bug 944108). If you encounter further problems with
files in linux-firmware not being available during installation, please
file them against linux-firmware rather than against the installer.

2012-03-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Glen Ramsay, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This
bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently.
We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please perform at
the Terminal:

As well, could you please provide all information noted in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingMouseDetection ?

[Bug 964415] Re: Please sync from Debian to get security fix

2012-03-25 Thread Thomas Leonard
* A description of the proposed changes, with sufficient detail to
estimate their potential impact on the distribution

When connecting to the key information server, to check whether a GPG
software-signing key should be trusted, 0install asks Python to check
that the server has a valid HTTPS certificate. However, Python's
certificate validator does not check that the certificate presented is
for the site requested. Therefore, an attacker with a valid X.509
certificate for another site can impersonate the key information server.
0install 1.6 contains a fix for this (doing the validation itself).

* A rationale for the exception, explaining the benefit of the change

A release should not go out with a known security flaw.

* Any additional information which would be helpful in considering the
decision

The changes between 1.4.1 and 1.6 are quite minor (mostly bug-fixes). A
PPA package of 1.6 for precise is here:

https://launchpad.net/~talex5/+archive/0install

This PPA is a direct import from Debian (it does not contain the patch
for bug #953756). I will upload a patch for that once the sync is done.

Thanks,

[Bug 953756] Re: 0install cannot install system packages on Pangolin

2012-03-25 Thread Thomas Leonard
They want to update to 1.6 before applying the patch (to get a security
fix). I've filed a bug for that here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zeroinstall-
injector/+bug/964415

Note that my PPA now contains a plain 1.6 (from Debian) without the
patch, as part of this process (to test that 1.6 works on precise).

Nicolas Produit (nicolas-produit-unige), thank you for reporting this

[Bug 964561] [NEW] Laptop freeze on battery power

2012-03-25 Thread Cristian Chelu
Public bug reported:

After an unknown ammount of time passed on battery power, the laptop completely
freezes. First the mouse, then the whole screen.
Switching TTY doesn't work either, the only solution is restarting. If not on
AC power, this cycle continues. It does this independently of applications
opened. Even if opened and left to idle. I'm happy to provide any further info
needed.

[Bug 961055] Re: Bug message from usb

2012-03-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ygor, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. , thank
you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. However, your crash
report is missing. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new
bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. One may
execute at the Terminal:
sudo apt-get -y install libc6-dbg sudo service apport start force_start=1

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now reproduce the crash, then open your file manager, navigate to your
/var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 964535] Re: ubiquity 2.10.2 package wants to install full kde stack

2012-03-25 Thread Colin Watson
This is because ubiquity depends on any of its frontends, and so if
ubiquity-frontend-gtk is temporarily uninstallable for some reason then
the packaging system will tend to try to pick a different one to satisfy
its dependencies. I don't intend to change this since you aren't
supposed to have ubiquity installed on normal systems anyway - it's only
for use on live CDs and the like - and since the real problem here was
probably elsewhere.

[Bug 964568] [NEW] Intel 3650 Graphics on Atom D2700MUD fails on Precise

2012-03-25 Thread Mark Ellse
Public bug reported:

CD and USB boot both fail using Intel Atom D2700MUD, which has Intel Graphics
Media Accelerator 3650. Boot proceeds a varriable short time just after Network
Configuration, sometimes up to just after bluetooth daemon. Screen goes blank
however computer still responds to CTRL-ALT-DEL, which causes it to reboot and
eject CD when applicable.
Believed to be problems with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3650.

[Bug 611810] Re: [PATCH] NVIDIA GPU audio-over-HDMI: Patch required to support recent GPUs

2012-03-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stephen Warren, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

[Bug 964574] [NEW] Images print as black blocks

2012-03-25 Thread David Power
Public bug reported:

With the latest upgrade (11.0) images print as a black block. E.g.
printing out www.google.com results in a black rectangle where I would
expect to see the image of the google logo. In the past output to my
HP1100 worked properly. This is a major problem as I now cannot print
maps or any other images without using another browser.

[Bug 964571] [NEW] Alt+Shift+Tab doesn't work unless Alt+Tab is pressed first.

2012-03-25 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

The keyboard shortcut Alt-Shift-Tab does nothing unless Alt-Tab is
pressed first (and Alt is continued to be held down). It should be
possible to use the keyboard window switcher in reverse order without
having to go forward first. (Other desktops such as Windows, GNOME
Shell, etc. allow this.) This also affects the Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Tab
shortcut (to show windows from all workspaces).

If this isn't fixed, I guess the help article will have to be a bit more
complex to explain that.

To quote from the Desktop help:

When you hold down the Alt key and then press Tab, a window switcher
appears. This shows a list of the windows you have open, with a preview.

You can continue pressing Tab as many times as you need to reach the
window you want.

To switch to the previous window, hold down the Alt key and press Shift-
Tab instead.

Only windows from the current workspace will be shown. To show windows
from all workspaces, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press Tab or
Shift-Tab.

This indicates that there's been a problem reading from the CD. This is
generally due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, rather than being an
installer bug as such. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the
CD/DVD at a lower speed, or to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning
kits are often available from electronics suppliers).

Please attach the files mentioned by the error message after the

you'll need to try another install to retrieve these files.

[Bug 964576] [NEW] login fails to bring up unity 3D (2D OK)

2012-03-25 Thread Jim Leinweber
Public bug reported:

the results are the same with 3.2.0-17 and 3.2.0-20.

Public bug reported:

This page poorly documents Grub behaviour during boot.

In fact pressing ESC early enough causes a prompt boot:. The possible options

If this is standard, documentaion should reflect behaviour.

[Bug 666493] Re: Maverick's imon kernel module does not support protocol switching (regression)

2012-03-25 Thread Alistair Chapman
I have also just bought and attempted to connect an iMon LCD device (an
UltraBay, that lsusb reads as Bus 002 Device 004: ID 15c2:0045
SoundGraph Inc. and am having absolutely no luck connecting to my
Ubuntu 11.10 machine. Any attempts to start LCDd or similar just report
that the IMON kernel module hasnt been installed and that it cannot
access the driver [imonlcd].

I tried Hanno's workaround from #3 with no success.

I'm usually not too bad, but with this I'm completely stuck. Is there
any information I'm missing? Or has someone found a way of making
imon_lcd.ko that works in Oneiric?

be a little messed up on that front. If you've got any other ideas or
