It is my understanding that apt-get works well in these situations -- did you mean that *aptitude* wants to remove those packages? If you must install foreign-arch packages and aptitude gives you grief, use another package manager. > I vote to give this bug > critical status. > While I'm certain that some people have attempted to fix this (myself included), to my knowledge there is no one doing this currently. Twiddling the bug status is not going to change anyone's priorities[1] nor will it magically conjure a fix. Aptitude's developers are volunteers. Ubuntu provides other package managers which do not have this problem. [Bug 998596] [NEW] Touchpad buttons on 2012 Samsung Series 9 do not work properly; left button double clicks and right button does not work at all
Public bug reported: The left click button works, but it double clicks. For instance, if I click a link with ctrl held down, it opens two new tabs. Right button doesn't work at all. RE: [Bug 241368] Re: remove old kernels from grub list
Sound very technical but how do you do any of these things. What does sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bugs-launchpad-net-falkensweb/remove-old-kernels mean? Its all meaningless to new users. I now have 4 pages of old kernels on my laptop with windows at the bottom of course. What is a grub list and ho do I edit it? How do I remove the old kernels? These are the sort of questions that need simple answers for people like me. Good job that I only use my laptop for playing games on. Best wishes Howard Walker Email: hwalk...@btopenworld.com or h...@635csi.co.uk -Original Message- From: boun...@canonical.com [mailto:boun...@canonical.com] On Behalf Of Kangarooo Sent: 12 May 2012 09:45 To: h...@635csi.co.uk Subject: [Bug 241368] Re: remove old kernels from grub list i did sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bugs-launchpad-net-falkensweb/remove-old-kernels how to execute it now? -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241368 Title: remove old kernels from grub list Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: linux-image This is a bug for new user confidence. So far Hardy has updated the kernel 3 times, which means 7 Ubuntu options on the grub list (3 kernels, 3 recoveries, 1 memtest). A beginner will definitely be intimidated by this huge list of grub options. When I made the jump from Windows, after the first kernel update, I was really worried that I would make the wrong choice. No explanation is given in the grub menu, and the only difference between the options is one number. I thought this new option was a completely different version of Linux (not just the kernel), and all of my data might be on the other option. An unexplained option on the grub boot menu list adds anxiety, which doesn't help Bug #1. There are two general ways to fix this: 1) Commenting out the options in the grub list. This is a simple fix, but it doesn't clear up the space taken by the old kernels. There is also the possibility that grub updates will reload the list, bringing back all of the options. You would have to make sure any reloading of the grub list also makes sure the old kernels stay commented out, which makes this a trans-package fix. 2) Actually removing the old kernels. This clears up space, but runs the risk of removing a stable kernel when the new one causes problems. I agree that at least one old kernel should be kept just in case the new one doesn't work. However, that would still mean 2 kernels showing up on the grub list, which will still intimidate casual users. --- If there is worry about adding an prompt for the user to choose, there is already one that appears when the kernel is updated: the restart notification. The update manager lets users know they need to restart their computer, and there is plenty of room for a short notification that the new kernel is at the top of the grub menu list. So, my proposed solution: 1) When installing a new kernel, mark for removal all but the current kernel (plus the one that's going to be installed). That way, if the new kernel doesn't work, the user can just use the previous one. Also, if more advanced users want to keep older kernels, they can simply uncheck the mark for removal of those older kernels. 2) Include a sentence in the restart notification that says something like, "Your updated Linux kernel (x.xx.xx-xx) will be added to the top of the Grub list. (What's a Linux kernel?)" This is so casual users won't get confused when they restart and now see two versions of Ubuntu. The What's a Linux kernel part should have a link to a small help that explains what it means. The help file shouldn't have a in depth explanation about kernels, just info saying that this isn't a new version of Ubuntu, just a new version of the underlying hardware interface, so no data will be lost. 3) After a successful restart (or several successful restarts), include a notification that says something like, "Your current Linux kernel (x.xx.xx-xx) appears to be working well. You can remove old Linux kernel versions to clear up space (XXX MB). This will also remove those old versions from your Grub boot menu list. You can do this anytime by removing the following packages via Synaptic: A, B, C [Remove old versions now]" Similar to the update notification, it would be confined to the Notification Area, and would pop up only when the user clicked on it. The "Remove old versions now" is a button that the user can click. This is so the user can simply dismiss the notification if they want, but still be informed if they want to remove the packages later. When you click the empty document changes so that the 'Click to add text' is now at the top left with a round bullet. 5) Click on 'Click to add title', type 'This is a title' 6) Now click on the 'Click to add text' and and type 'Level 1' hit return 7) Now hit tab and type Level 2 hit return (as you hit tab the bullet changes to a -) 8) type More level 2 and hit return and then Yet more level 2 9) Now go to File->Save as, select a Filter: of Microsoft Powerpoint 97/2000/XP/2003 (.ppt), type a filename (say broken2.ppt) and hit save 10) Convert the 'use Microsoft Powerpoint 97/2000/xp/2003 format' prompt 11) Exit libreoffice (File->Exit, click Discard when it prompts) 12) Now reopen libreoffice (e.g. at the terminal) 13) Use File->Open to open broken2.ppt 14) Click on the L of the 1st line that says Level 2 and then double click, the 'Level 2' is now inverted to show it's highlighted. 15) Hit shift-tab step 15 now shows the bug - Current behavior: the text incorrectly moves to the right and a bullet >> is shown. Expected behavior: it should be moving to the left and the bullet should match the 1st level bullet. Note this happens if you don't go through a .ppt format at any stage. this is affecting me too. Compiz goes mad upon opening chromium. 12.04, 2:8.960-ubuntu1 amd graphics driver. (4000 series gpu). Changing Vblank in CCSM doesn't improve the CPU usage. Nor does making amdccle wait for vertical refresh. Enabling tear free desktop does not have any affect either. Nor does enabling/disabling catalist AI. [Bug 998589] [NEW] remmina "1" button broken in Precise
Public bug reported: Broken on my recently-upgraded-from-Oneiric workstation: Suddenly, clicking the "resize window to remote display" button (the "1" button) in a Remmina connection results in a really bizarre, stretched- taller-vertically-than-my-monitor window with nothing but featureless grey in the middle of it. It's basically screwed from that point on out (right-clicking the window handle on the taskbar and maximizing will at least bring the display visible, but all the controls - including tabs to select different sessions - will still be missing) until I close remmina and delete the preferences file from ~/.remmina/. After deleting the prefs file and restarting Remmina, things will be back to normal - but if I click the "1" button, they'll screw right back up again. I posted here (post #9) in September 2011: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1692353 I'm having the exact same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 - I can connect, the connection will stay up and work for a while, then it will disconnect at a seemingly random period (usually within a 10 minute timeframe). [Bug 951537] Re: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000140
Occurs every time for me, with final release of 12.04, immediately after I respond to "attempt to unmount" query. (Query is because I have booted from ISO file so one partition is already mounted.) This is effectively a show-stopper because OOPS message obscures the screen. Eventually ALT-F7 returns to install. There is another hazard there since the keyboard apparently still controls install while it's invisible, so trying ENTER at the OOPS message sets install to work doing the wrong thing. The failing system contains an empty ext4 partition. If this is changed to ext2 or removed or somewhat filled then the OOPS does not occur. This should be an adequate work-around since an empty partition isn't precious. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/951537 Title: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0140 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/951537/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
