[Bug 1164754] Re: No appearance settings available in System Settings

2013-05-17 Thread Tom Vaughan
This didn't work for me because I have `APT::Install-Recommends 0;`
set under `/etc/apt/apt.conf.d`. I had to explicitly install this
package by hand. A better solution IMHO would be to make this a required
dependency.

[Bug 1086019] Re: cupsd crashes regularly (daily)

2013-05-17 Thread Till Kamppeter
Cedric, sorry, forget about the previous comment, I wanted to ask you
another thing.

You are sure that your file /etc/logrotate.d/cups is exactly the same as
the one I asked you for testing in comment #15.

Can you attach your /etc/logrotate.d/cups file here? Thanks.

[Bug 794727] Re: Please symlink /var/log/messages to syslog

2013-05-17 Thread Robie Basak
It looks like this bug has a few duplicates and other implications, such
as to logwatch in bug 1010625. So I think the original bug should
remain, since most comments here pertain to that, and it is useful to
keep this bug to help track anything else that has been affected by this
change.

I have created bug 1181264 to track the symlink wishlist item.

Note that I'm tentatively marking this Won't Fix for the same reason as
Phillip's justification. Those annoyed by this should note that it isn't
always clear that a decision to make a change will turn out to be
controversial or cause disruption. This appears to be the case here.
It's reasonable to make changes that aren't expected to have wider
consequences or controversy as otherwise we'd get nothing done. But now
that you've presented the controversy, the Ubuntu Code of Conduct
clearly requires us to seek consensus.

Seeking consensus on this bug is clearly not going to be productive, as
there will be obvious consensus amongst those affected by this bug (and
therefore those who find the bug), and those with other use cases will
be left out completely, since they won't know about the bug. So if you'd
like to see this changed, then please seek consensus for a fix on the
appropriate mailing lists.

I also don't see anything in the Ubuntu delta regarding this. Has this
change actually been made in Debian or upstream? If so, the appropriate
venue to discuss this issue may also be upstream.

- Please symlink /var/log/messages to syslog
+ /var/log/messages is empty after upgrade to natty

[Bug 1010625] Re: named logs are not being reported in logwatch

2013-05-17 Thread Robie Basak
@Craig

Thanks for taking the time to find the duplicates. I agree with bug
752172 and have marked that duplicate. I disagree on bug 1010602 - samba
doesn't log to /var/log/messages; it logs to /var/log/samba/. So I think
that is a separate issue and have left it as-is.

could you please send me a mail? (I have already sent you a mail from

[Bug 1069843] Re: Nautilus consuming memory and cpu

2013-05-17 Thread dvo
I had the same problem on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS, after some package updates (maybe
from 12.10 or 13.04):
Thumbnail preview is broken, CPU load increases with the number of previewable
files in the folder viewed with nautilus.
Just found a solution/workaround here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=683394#15
ln -s ~/.thumbnails ~/.cache/thumbnails

[Bug 1181272] [NEW] Selecting items while dragging mouse looses selection when right clicking on them

2013-05-17 Thread Luis Alvarado
Public bug reported:

The problem can be reproduce faster if you open Nautilus and select
several files or folders with the intention of copying them, then
immediately after selecting them, right click for the context menu to
appear. When the context menu appears, you will loose the selected
objects. This only happens the first time.

How it should behave is for me to drag and select any files/folders and
if I do right click on them, the selected items should stay selected.
After the problem I have to do it again for them to be selected
correctly, with this I mean, I have to select them again and then right
click for them to stay selected.

 No, I think Yann is absolutely correct about this. My laptop can
 boot in UEFI, BIOS, or a mixed mode (where it looks for a UEFI
 partition and then, if not found, looks for a MBR boot record). The
 point, however, is that I can boot SuperGRUB or a live-CD via
 BIOS/MBR booting off of a CD or USB drive, and then mount the linux
 partition on my hard-drive, and then run update-grub from there.
 That would be a case where my computer booted via BIOS/MBR *just*
 for that recovery session, when normal booting is going to be
 done via UEFI.

You don't seem to have understood the passage you quoted. Let me try
rephrasing it: when you boot from the livecd and update grub, you
first chroot into the hard drive, so you are running the update-grub
version on the hd, not the cd. Thus, if you installed the system
originally in efi mode and it has grub-efi installed, and you boot the
cd in bios mode, you are still running the efi version of update-grub
when you chroot into the hd, so the fact that you booted the livecd in
bios mode does not matter.

 But it seems that the more-critical part of the solution would be
 for there to be grub.conf directives specific to MBR and UEFI
 booting. Imagine, for example:

 menuentry Windows 8 { set root-efi=(hd0,gpt2) set
 root-mbr=(hd0,2) chainloader-efi
 /EFI/microsoft/BOOT/bootmgfw.efi chainloader-mbr +1 }

We're not going to support having both installed at the same time and
using the same config. You need to pick which mode you want to use
and stick with it, not flip flop every other boot. In addition,
Windows can not be booted in bios mode on a GPT disk, so you have to
use grub-efi anyhow.

[Bug 1173623] Re: Launcher - Two finger scrolling doesn't permit navigating through icons anymore

2013-05-17 Thread Christopher Townsend
Currently, if you hold down the Alt key and then use either the mouse
wheel or two-finger/edge touchpad scroll, then the Launcher will scroll
up or down. Bug #1081843 is what changed this design.

Design has said that the desired solution be that two finger scrolling
and a physical wheel mouse behave differently, but at this point, I'm
not sure if we can discern between two different physical devices at
this level. I'll investigate this more before saying this with 100%
confidence:)

[Bug 1181106] Re: Failed to change profile to A2DP in 13.04 (Raring)

2013-05-17 Thread James Tillman
I strongly doubt that the problem truly lies in bluez. My bluez is
working fine, it seems (I am the reporter of the original support
request to which this bug is linked). It appears that the problem is
more likely in something that happened to PulseAudio during the 13.04
upgrade, as I suspect that PulseAudio is responsible for the A2DP
profile.

[Bug 1181275] [NEW] RPC failure on NIS operation

2013-05-17 Thread Trevor Robinson
Public bug reported:

Starting with 13.04, NIS fails when parsing long group lines (in my
case, 1262 bytes).

On login, errors such as the following are repeated numerous times:

yp_all: clnt_call: RPC: Can't decode result
do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Can't decode result

The root cause can be seen with ypcat, where the first long group line
causes a failure:

$ ypcat group.byname
shorter lines printed correctly
yp_all: clnt_call: RPC: Can't decode result
No such map group.byname. Reason: RPC failure on NIS operation

Perhaps this is due to a security fix similar to this one in RHEL, where
YP record parsing was limited to YPMAXRECORD (1024):

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=848748

The regression this caused was reported and fixed for Fedora 18:

[Bug 334374] Re: libnss-ldap should not depend on libpam-ldap

2013-05-17 Thread Robie Basak
@Daniel

Makes sense to me. Since NSS isn't strictly auth, would it also make
sense to rename ldap-auth-config to ldap-config?

This area is complex, especially with the delta with Debian in mind. I'm
not even considering touching this because I'm worried I'll break
something, and it seems like it would take significant effort to verify
that all use cases will be fulfilled with any change at all.

I think this needs a stakeholder to drive it, particularly with speaking
to Debian, coordinating, etc. Since it may have wider implications, I
think it makes sense to seek consensus on the Ubuntu mailing lists, too.

Volunteers welcome :)

@1000Gbps

I think you have a different issue there - none of the error messages
match up with the error messages produced by this bug, and your problem
is with a different package. It also looks like it could be a local
configuration issue, rather than a bug.

I suggest you try community support options. Details are at
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community. It's also wise to test
production server upgrades before rolling them out.

 I would rather file a bug against upstart.

As the developer, I am asking you to file a bug against ureadahead.

 Ureadahead does his job and exits with status 4 or 5

 Init on the other hand does not close the log file for some reason.

Because ureadahead is not behaving correctly under upstart, and somehow
manages to cause upstart to not notice that the process has exited.

[Bug 1103022] Re: 70-udev-acl.rules needs to put g+rw on /dev/kvm

2013-05-17 Thread Serge Hallyn
Thanks Daviey. confirmed, with quantal-proposed I get

crw-rw 1 root kvm 10, 232 May 17 15:43 /dev/kvm

** Description changed:

  When qemu-system gets installed, the newly installed udev rule causes
  /dev/kvm to gets chgrpd to kvm and its mode to get set to g+rw.
  However, because /dev/kvm was tagged with ACL previously, there is a
  group:: acl on /dev/kvm which does not get removed. Therefore /dev/kvm
  is g+rw in the file mode, but the acl denies group read/write access.
  After a reboot all is fine.

  I have not seen a clean way to have udev remove that acl, and there is
  no reason for it. So please update the 70-udev-acl.rules file to set
  MODE=0660 on /dev/kvm

  SRU Justification
  1. Impact: when qemu-kvm is first installed, /dev/kvm is not owned by group
kvm (until subsequent reboot). This prevents libvirt from using kvm until a
reboot.
  2. Development fix: add group kvm during preinst. (this was done in precise,
but accidentally dropped in a merge from debian in quantal)
  3. Stable fix: same as development fix
- 4. Test case: Create a new quantal vm. sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm. ls -l
/dev/kvm, check that it is owned by group kvm.
+ 4. Test case: Create a new quantal vm. sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm. ls -l
/dev/kvm, check that it is owned by group kvm. Note if you've install qemu-kvm
previously, purging it is not enough before retesting - you must also remove
the kvm group entry.
  5. Regression potential: none

[Bug 1181275] Re: RPC failure on NIS operation

2013-05-17 Thread Trevor Robinson
** Description changed:

  Starting with 13.04, NIS fails when parsing long group lines (in my
  case, 1262 bytes).

  On login, errors such as the following are repeated numerous times:

  yp_all: clnt_call: RPC: Can't decode result
  do_ypcall: clnt_call: RPC: Can't decode result

  The root cause can be seen with ypcat, where the first long group line
  causes a failure:

  $ ypcat group.byname
  shorter lines printed correctly
  yp_all: clnt_call: RPC: Can't decode result
  No such map group.byname. Reason: RPC failure on NIS operation

  Perhaps this is due to a security fix similar to this one in RHEL, where
  YP record parsing was limited to YPMAXRECORD (1024):

  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=848748

  The regression this caused was reported and fixed for Fedora 18:

  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=892777
  https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/glibc-2.16-31.fc18

http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/scm-commits/Week-of-Mon-20130429/1008442.html
+
+ As mentioned in that bug report, NIS entries are technically limited to
+ 1024 characters, but Linux has not historically enforced this. A
+ workaround is to break long group entries into separate lines with
+ slightly different names but the same GID:

[Bug 1180469] Re: Firefox does not use HTTPS by default

I agree SSL/TLS by default would be grand, but there are probably
several reasons why it's not a good idea. You can get the functionality
you're looking for with the EFF's HTTPS Everywhere extension for Firefox
and Chrome/Chromium: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

[Bug 1178967] Re: When upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04, white borders appeared around customized icons.

2013-05-17 Thread Salem
Probably Matteo is talking of this (annex, screenshots and src icons):
http://askubuntu.com/questions/279332/how-can-i-remove-the-gray-boxes-
around-custom-folder-icons

To reproduce:
* Select any folder in Nautilus - left click - Properties
* Choose a different icon;
* The selected folder appears with the selected icon, but with the border seen
in the question at AskUbuntu.

On older versions (Precise at least) the border is not present.

From the comments it seems it was already reported in bugzilla (and
fixed), but still happens in Raring.

[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2013-05-17 Thread moko138
I made a small mistake in my #119 comment :
if I paste at the very beginning of the Occidental (ISO-8859-15) file, I do NOT
get an empty file : my .goutputstream-XYZ123 contains the pasted text. I can't
get intentionally an empty file.

  And one more time, I got this with a 32 bits Pentium M processor, GDM
and Ubuntu 10.04 4.

[Bug 1181226] Re: working with files longer than 42 minutes

2013-05-17 Thread Cenwen
I've been surprised to not be able to find the corresponding bug (he sould be
opened since the time) because it is an old bug linked Pygoocanvas and GTK. As
anyone want to resolve it (they send them the ball), we have try a new and
powerfull solution using HTML5, CSS3, Javascript and Webkit. At we are working
this time on it and this will come with the 2.0.0 planned for the end of the
year.
Thanks.

[Bug 1181135] Re: open-vm-dkms 2011.12.20-562307-0ubuntu1: open-vm-tools kernel module failed to build

2013-05-17 Thread Robie Basak
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

I think the underlying cause is that you're using the Quantal Hardware
Enablement Stack, which supplies a 3.5 kernel, whereas 12.04 originally
shipped with a 3.2 kernel. Details of this are at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack

I'm not sure what the situation is around DKMS modules in the archive
and the newer kernel. I've asked for someone to get back to this bug on
this issue.

In the meantime, if you are able to use the original kernel, then that
may work for you.

[Bug 1173468] Re: release upgrade doesn't properly calculate free space needed for /boot

2013-05-17 Thread Brian Murray
When update-initramfs is ran a backup of the initrd for the kernel being
installed is made, while the new one is being generated. Hence, the
need for additional free space.

[Bug 1181298] [NEW] [Aspire 5750G, Realtek ALC269VB, Mic, Internal] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2013-05-17 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Public bug reported:

As the title says my internal microphone is not working (not Skype,
Ubuntu mixer and Google Hangout). I think it did work a while ago but I
am not sure and it must have been some time since I last tried it.

When I raise up the mic boost it just gives me some crackling noise
otherwise I do get no sound at all.

I chose »Internal Mic« in the Ubuntu mixer and also experimented with
alsa-mixer by raising up the several microphone, digital and capture
volumes and disabling »Auto-mute mode« without success.

[Bug 958238] Re: Several options for rhythmbox-client are non-functional

2013-05-17 Thread Joe Wells
The part about --no-start not working also affects me. I did not check
the other options. I have the Ubuntu rhythmbox 2.96-0ubuntu4.2 package
installed (Ubuntu 12.04 Precise plus updates).

I checked in the source code and the option sets the variable no_start
in the file remote/dbus/rb-client.c. There is no other use of this
variable in the entire package source tree. Did this feature used to
exist and was removed incompletely? Or maybe the code that uses this
was not committed in time?

Re: [Bug 1024383] Re: update-grub generates only BIOS based menu entries for Windows, even on UEFI systems

2013-05-17 Thread Joseph Emenaker
On 5/17/2013 8:17 AM, Phillip Susi wrote:
 You don't seem to have understood the passage you quoted. Let me try
 rephrasing it: when you boot from the livecd and update grub, you
 first chroot into the hard drive, so you are running the update-grub
 version on the hd, not the cd.

True, looking back through it, I think I misinterpreted it. I took the
original idea to be use the mode (UEFI vs BIOS) which was used for this
current boot session. You can generate a grub.cfg for another system
without needing to chroot. grub-mkconfig lets you redirect the output to
any file you want. So, what's to prevent a user from booting a recovery
CD and, without using chroot, using:

grub-mkconfig -o /media/MyRealUbuntuPartition/boot/grub/grub.cfg

 We're not going to support having both installed at the same time and
 using the same config. You need to pick which mode you want to use
 and stick with it, not flip flop every other boot. In addition,
 Windows can not be booted in bios mode on a GPT disk, so you have to
 use grub-efi anyhow.

But other OS's *can*. I can boot my linux partitions in UEFI or BIOS
mode. Furthermore, linux is what I turn to when I have trouble booting
any of my partitions. If I can just get to a linux prompt, with
fdisk/parted/grub/etc, then I can usually fix any other booting
problems. So, it would be helpful to be able to boot a linux partition
from BIOS mode if the EFI SP gets hosed. You can choose not to support
that; that's your choice, but I think there are scenarios wherein it
would be useful.

/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/eduroam:

[ipv6]
method=auto
ip6-privacy=2

[connection]
id=eduroam
uuid=2fb6ac81-bb1c-44df-ba87-f0ec95e3d0d1
type=802-11-wireless
timestamp=1349875620

[802-11-wireless]
ssid=eduroam
mode=infrastructure
security=802-11-wireless-security

[802-1x]
eap=ttls;
identity=change this@studserv.uni-leipzig.de
phase2-auth=pap
password=change this

[ipv4]
method=auto

[802-11-wireless-security]
key-mgmt=wpa-eap

Mine was almost identical, but did not have the line which starts with
password. After introducing this line (and deleting two other lines
that appeared in my configuration file but not here) now after rebooting
eduroam does not ask for a password any more.

So it seems that the bug is that after editing the connection in the
NetworkManager GUI this password line is not saved in the system
configuration file, if I understand correctly how nm works.

This is one of the reasons I want to start backporting the newer

But first I want to finish up my work (and proposal) on the Saucy

But we have to be really careful, or we'll break stuff that works.

[Bug 1181312] [NEW] Race to start gnome-settings-daemon in upstart user session

2013-05-17 Thread Jason Conti
Public bug reported:

It appears if enabling the upstart user session (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RaringRingtail/ReleaseNotes#Upstart_User_Sessions_.28technology_preview.29
) there is a race between gnome-session and upstart for who starts
gnome-settings-daemon first.

Most of the time on my system, it seems like upstart wins. I'm guessing
in that case, gnome-session tries to start it, fails and gives up, which
is fine.

When gnome-session wins however, upstart continues to respawn gnome-
settings-daemon indefinitely, usually causing the wrong icon theme to
load, and causing flickering on the desktop (most noticeable in a conky
window, but affecting other windows as well).

Since it is a race, it is difficult to reproduce, but it can be forced by:
1) enable upstart user sessions
2) mkdir -p ~/.config/upstart/
3) echo manual  ~/.config/upstart/gnome-settings-daemon.override
4) Log into the ubuntu session
5) initctl start gnome-settings-daemon;

Running: initctl stop gnome-settings-daemon; will stop the endless
respawn of gnome-settings-daemon when finished testing.

My current workaround is to disable /etc/xdg/gnome-settings-
daemon.desktop from starting, and let upstart take it.

ProblemType: Bug

Package: gnome-settings-daemon 3.6.4-0ubuntu8

  This is observed to occur only when utah is used to run the floodlight smoke
tests. Running the floodlight tests without utah does not cause this issue and
using utah to run some other tests does not cause this issue either.

  Noticed a similar bug 1021471, but this one is occurring in KVM using
  libvirt.

  The issue is only with the saucy kernel version, 3.9.0-1 and does not
  occur with 3.9.0-0. The tests were tried with saucy server VMs on
  precise as well as saucy hosts and the results is the same.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install a default saucy server on a vm (either manually or preseeded
default installation) with either i386 or amd64 image using KVM, libvirt
  2. Do the following to install utah inside the VM
     sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:utah/stable
     sudo apt-get update
     sudo apt-get install utah
  3. Run the floodlight tests using
   sudo utah -r  lp:ubuntu-test-cases/server/runlists/floodlight.run
  4. Now kernel: [ 358.452029] unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to
become free. Usage count = 2 will be continuously reported
