[Bug 1229572] [NEW] backport SecureBoot support from 13.10 for 12.04.4
Public bug reported: This is a meta-bug for backporting SecureBoot support from 13.10 for 12.04.4. To fully update the SecureBoot stack for 12.04.4 and fix a number of outstanding bugs, we will have to update a number of packages: - gnu-efi: update to upstream version 3.0u, so new upstream shim is buildable in precise. - sbsigntool: update the backport from 0.6-0ubuntu1 to 0.6-0ubuntu4, to include various fixes so build-time validation of shim-signed is possible (i.e., so recent shim-signed is buildable in precise). - shim: binary-copy of 0.4-0ubuntu4 from saucy, so we don't have to round-trip to Microsoft for a separate signature for each release of what should be functionally the same program - shim-signed: binary-copy of 1.4 from saucy (once shim 0.4-0ubuntu4 has been signed by Microsoft) We should also backport grub2 support for generating signed netboot images, but this can be handled as a separate bug report. [Impact] A number of OEM devices that ship with Secure Boot enabled are reported to not be able to boot 12.04.3, due to bugs in the pre-release version of shim included in that point release. The only practical means of addressing this is by updating the related packages to the current versions; cherry-picking individual bugfixes is error-prone and time-consuming. This will pull in some new features in addition to the bugfixes - such as netboot support - but this is also justifiable from a hardware-enablement perspective in the LTS. [Test Case] 1. Rebuild all reverse-dependencies of gnu-efi in precise: refit, efilinux, elilo, shim, sbsigntool, and verify that they're buildable 2. Verify that the resulting shim binary build is functional by using it to boot a UEFI machine with and without SecureBoot enabled 3. Rebuild shim-signed from precise against the new sbsigntool, and verify it builds correctly 4. Rebuild shim-signed from precise-proposed against the new sbsigntool, and verify that it also builds correctly 5. Install linux-signed-generic-lts-raring from precise-updates and verify that it works with the new sbsigntool 6. Verify that linux-signed-lts-raring builds from source with the new sbsigntool [Regression Potential] This is a significant update to bootloader code which carries risk of regressing an unknown number of systems and rendering them unbootable. This risk is mitigated by the fact that there have been no reports of regression with the new version of shim in saucy, and the plan is to do a binary copy so if it works in saucy it should work in precise. There have also been multiple reports of machines successfully booting with shim 0.4 which failed with the earlier versions, making this worth the risk. ** Affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: sbsigntool (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim-signed (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: sbsigntool (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim-signed (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu Quantal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: sbsigntool (Ubuntu Quantal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim (Ubuntu Quantal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim-signed (Ubuntu Quantal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu Raring) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: sbsigntool (Ubuntu Raring) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim (Ubuntu Raring) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: shim-signed (Ubuntu Raring) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu Precise) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu Quantal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: gnu-efi (Ubuntu Raring) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: sbsigntool (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: shim (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: shim-signed (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1229572 Title: backport SecureBoot support from 13.10 for 12.04.4 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnu-efi/+bug/1229572/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com

Re: [Bug 1220086] Re: Google Earth still depends on ia32-libs
That's because Google Earth does really depend on ia32-libs. Application won't work without this dependency, theoretically there's a way to isolate only the particular ia32-libs that are used by Google Earth. But I'm afraid this would take too much time and effort. Google Earth (googleearth-package) works just fine on both Sid and Jessie, if you have any suggestion on what dependency should I make it instead of ia32-libs on Ubuntu please do. [Bug 1229591] [NEW] display brightness keys stop working after saucy upgrade
Public bug reported: On raring (and precise) the display brightness keys (fn+f4 and fn+f5) on my Dell Inspiron 14z turned the brightness up and down. After a saucy upgrade this no longer happens (I don't see the popup brightness bubble either). The other, similar keys (volume adjustment, etc) still work fine. Changing the values in /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness works (temporarily - it gets reset after the screen lock kicks in) I tried following the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting but this appears to be out of date (it references /usr/share/doc/udev/README.keymap.txt which does not exist) $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu Saucy Salamander (development branch) Release:13.10 $ apt-cache policy udev udev: Installed: 204-0ubuntu12 Candidate: 204-0ubuntu12 Version table: *** 204-0ubuntu12 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: udev (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1229591 Title: display brightness keys stop working after saucy upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/1229591/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1228689] Re: sony vaio pro 13 internal microphone not working
https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/hda has no packages for Saucy. I downloaded the raring tarball and built it locally, but it does not work: Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/bin/hda-jack-sense-test, line 47, in module codec = HDACodec(cardindex, codecindex) File /usr/share/snd-hda-tools/hda_codec.py, line 1023, in __init__ self.fd = os.open(/dev/snd/hwC%sD%s % (card, device), os.O_RDWR) OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/dev/snd/hwC0D0' I also copeid it to my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~yuv/+archive/yuv-stuff The package conflicts with alsa-tools I did some web search and was not able to source a working hda-jack- sense-test from anywhere else, sorry. However I think I got a sense where you are going to. I started hdajackretask. It gives me two codecs to select from: Intel Haswell HDMI and Realtek ALC286, which is also reported by `cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec` Intel Haswell HDMI is not what I am looking for. It shows three pins, all of them set to Digital Out, HDMI: 0x05, 0x06, 0x07. Realteks ALC286 is more interesting, especially when showing also unconnected pins: 0x12 Internal Mic 0x13 Not Connected 0x14 Internal Speaker 0x17 Not connected 0x18 Black Mic, Right Side 0x19 Not connected 0x1a Not connected 0x1d Not connected 0x1e Not connected 0x21 Black Headphone, Right Side Somebody more knowledgeable than me can tell me how to override those, but I did not see anywhere a headset listed. I did not find any reference to ALC286 in https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt even though I found some post of a commit support ALC286 Also no luck in http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/audio_intel_hda#sony Now it is long past 4AM and tomorrow I have a full day in school, sorry I could not get further than this and thanks for your continued help and support. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1228689 Title: sony vaio pro 13 internal microphone not working To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1228689/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1114673] Re: mount.cifs occasionally causes GPF error/kernel panic when mounting at boot [crypto_larval_kill+0x2b/0x90]
This bug is not confined to cifs mounts in fstab. I can get a kernel crash if i mount it manually but too soon after boot. I have a rather fast boot since i am running on an ssd and lubuntu so i think there might be some timing. issue, either network isn't properly up or some other process is doing something fishy. To me it also sometimes occur if the connection to the smaba server is interrupted somehow. We had a maintenance of the VPN tunnel between two sites and that killed the mounts with fatal results. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1114673 Title: mount.cifs occasionally causes GPF error/kernel panic when mounting at boot [crypto_larval_kill+0x2b/0x90] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1114673/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1227520] Re: Timezone changes are not working due to ro /etc and bind mounts
If you issue timedated's SetTimezone D-Bus call and strace the daemon, you see that it fails because of this: symlink(../usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Berlin, /etc/.localtime4e49606a750b8c2c) = -1 EROFS (Read-only file system) Which means that timedated is trying, entirely sensibly, to atomically overwrite the /etc/localtime symlink with the new timezone. This doesn't work with our ro-/etc scheme that we have on our device images. There will be a similar problem with updating /etc/timezone atomically too, but that's a file instead of a symlink. The rough workaround that we have in mind (suggested by cjwatson, thanks) is to create a writable directory and make /etc/localtime /etc/timezone /etc/adjtime be symlinks to files/symlinks as appropriate inside there, which are themselves atomically updated. Do this for the fallback case (EROFS) only. It does mean that we'll need to play whack-a-mole with anything else which thinks it can update these, sadly. I wonder if it'd be better to revisit making the whole of /etc writable on our images and deal with the conffile issues another way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1227520 Title: Timezone changes are not working due to ro /etc and bind mounts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1227520/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
