[Bug 1118323] Re: cups-pk-helper-mechanism crashed with signal 5 in g_variant_new_va()

2022-03-03 Thread ADFH
I've gotten around the bug by:
* Shutting down cups service
* Deleting
  * /etc/cups/printers.conf*
  * /etc/cups/classes.conf*
  * /etc/cups/subscriptions.conf*
* Rebooting
* Adding printer using the "Additional Printer Settings" button rather than the
"Add" button on initial screen

All three sets of deleted files were auto-created again, and no crash
dialog appeared.

[Bug 1118323] Re: cups-pk-helper-mechanism crashed with signal 5 in g_variant_new_va()

2022-03-03 Thread ADFH
I went to add a Kyocera Mita FS-1030D+ with an IB-21E NIC.

1. Tapped Windows key
2. Searched for "printers"
3. Saw list of printers already added in settings app in printer section
(Two printers originally listed - one not connected, one auto-added by network
detection)
4. Clicked "Add" button in the titlebar to add Kyocera
5. Add printer dialog appears, spinner shown briefly, then "System program
problem detected"

I now get a similar system program problem detected every time I sign
into my account.

I was able to add the printer through older looking Gnome printer dialog
("Additional Printer Settings" button), but still get a crash every time
I sign in.

[Bug 1874567] Re: [nvidia] Rotating secondary monitor to portrait fails, results in landscape

2020-06-25 Thread ADFH
I also logged https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-340/+bug/1876551 about nvidia-340 drivers having the same
problem (won't remember the config).

My workaround is a .desktop file that calls xrandr with my desired
parameters I configured with nvidia tool and then dumped out with
xrandr.

[Bug 1876551] [NEW] Upgrading from 19.10 to 20.04, gnome no longer allows setting display to portrait orientation

2020-05-02 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Upgraded from 19.10 to 20.04. Running:

* NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce GTS 250] (rev a2)
* Gigabyte P55A-UD4
* Intel Core i7 860
* 2x DELL U2413 1920x1200
  * One connected via DVI in landscape
* Detected as #2
* Positioned on the left
* Configured to be screen with dock/launcher
  * One connected via HDMI in portrait
* Detected as 1
* Positioned on the right

Upon logging into my normal gnome session, the right display (detected
as display 1) was no longer rotated to portrait orientation.

Attempting to do this through the normal Gnome settings panel appears to
disable monitor 1 which I want to rotate, and increase the virtual
desktop size on monitor 2.

Without rotation, both monitors are functioning.

[Bug 1853731] Re: [snap] chromium stops working after a while, fails to render new tabs/pages

2019-12-19 Thread ADFH
I launched chromium with:

chromium --enable-logging=stderr chrome://gpu 2>&1 | tee 1853731.txt

... then kept an eye on it. Once it got stuck and stopped rendering
things, I found the attached portion repeating until I killed it off
with killall chrome.

I could initially still open a new tab and go to youtube, but

I can provide more of the capture if need be, though I was mindful it
had some session IDs etc. in it. Before the point at which I noticed the
error, and the logs went crazy, I also observed things like:

[Bug 1853731] Re: chromium snap stops working after awhile, fails to render new tabs/pages

2019-12-14 Thread ADFH
Sorry it took me awhile.. run as requested following lockup..

It seems initially it still responds to keystrokes, lets you open new
tabs.. but then eventually the whole UI freezes, and attempts to close
with the X will get the app DNR dialog.

"killall chrome" nukes it, and it can then be re-run until it happens
again.

[Bug 1826078] Re: tracker-miner-fs brings system to its knees when indexing - scope for deduplicating hardlinked files?

2019-11-23 Thread ADFH
Response from Gnome folks was to add a ".trackerignore" file to some of
my more unwieldy directories, and then similar to Android's .nomedia
files, Tracker will skip indexing those directory trees.

[Bug 1826081] [NEW] Ability to automatically arrange desktop icons gone in 19.04

2019-04-23 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Upgraded from Ubuntu 18.10 to Ubuntu 19.04.

On the upside, Ubuntu 19.04 now handles my unusual desktop geometry, and
displays desktop icons within physical monitor dimensions (I have one
landscape, one portrait display).

The downside is there's no sort option for desktop icons anymore.

Icons are snapped to grid automatically, but all arrangement for now is
manual.

The restoration of "Sort by name" functionality at the very least, and
perhaps the addition of "Sort by type" would be even better.

[Bug 1826078] [NEW] tracker-miner-fs brings system to its knees when indexing - scope for deduplicating hardlinked files?

2019-04-23 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

I've noticed since upgrading from 18.10 to 19.04 that tracker-miner-fs
has been going to town on trying to index my filesystem.. so much so,
I've had to switch off all the search options, and then switch off
search overall, as well as call "tracker reset -r" as it seems that just
turning off search in the settings -> search titlebar doesn't always
take effect.

Within my home directory, and in other parts of my filesystem, I have
some folders that have date stamped rsync backups of remote systems.
Between directories, identical files are hard-linked, so they're stored
once, if the same, but listed in multiple directories if they existed at
that time (so each folder is a ready to go "point in time" snapshot, but
identical data is only stored once).

I believe that tracker-miner-fs is treating each instance of a file
listing as an independent copy because they exist in separate
directories, even though they're hard linked, and subsequently
processing the same files again and again and again, consuming the
majority of IO bandwidth on my drives.

There is the UI for Gnome tracker, but it's not that granular, with
options for whether or not things like "Documents" are included, but not
folders below that.

Where this enters bug territory is that this behaviour makes the system
unusable due to the IO load, with no visible indication of what's going
on.

The fixes might be feature suggestions.. Perhaps scope for:
* A ".nomedia" or similar .file like Android that tells tracker "Do not index
this folder"?
* Perhaps scope for tracker to keep a record of indexed inodes so it can skip
files it already knows about?
* Flagging that indexing is taking place in notification area with ability to
stop it, if it peaks at a certain IO utilisation?

[Bug 1802622] [NEW] Ubuntu Cosmic nvidia-340 needs patch for "Bad or missing usercopy whitelist? Kernel memory exposure attempt detected from SLUB object 'nvidia_stack_t'

2018-11-09 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic to Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic, I've
started seeing issues with getting into Xorg.

My config:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce GTS 250]
(rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd G92 [GeForce GTS 250]

System Information
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Product Name: P55A-UD4

Ubuntu 18.04 Cosmic w/nvidia-340 proprietary drivers.

This appears to be, in part, due to a newer kernel with stricter
permissions around kernel access.

This seems to have been fixed in Debian:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=88
... by backporting the fix from nvidia-390:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1570493
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1425704

Could this patch also be applied to nvidia-340 for Ubuntu?

Error I'm seeing on my own system (from dmesg):

I downloaded the nvidia-340 package from the link provided, dpkg -i'd it
and then was able to "apt --fix-broken install" the updates to the gles
packages that had been broken..

Thanks :)

[Bug 1577879] Re: File save as dialog doesn't switch to keyed in path anymore when pressing enter

2018-01-26 Thread ADFH
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=766696
... but they basically put it back to Ubuntu saying packages I had from Ubuntu
at the time weren't their bleeding edge, so it wasn't their issue.

It kiiinda sorta works now in 17.06 (I'm staying with 17.06 until they
have remote desktop sorted out with Wayland for the moment) - but it can
randomly tack on bits of filename, autocomplete style, at times... or
pressing enter sometimes will or won't work.. it may be slightly
confused by the fact in my folder heirarchy (which exists inside of a
bind mount) I have things like:

Parent/
   A/
 apple/
 aardvark/
   B/
 badger -> ../../A/apple

[Bug 1647117] [NEW] After accepting updates, the download progress bars are in a very small subpanel of dialog that cannot be resized

2016-12-03 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Software Updates (update-manager) will pop up announcing there are
updates. After one accepts the updates and proceeds to package download,
the screen that shows the package download state is such that the
downloads cannot be seen except for one, as the subpanel within the
dialog in which the download progress is shown/listed is locked at a
small size.

Resizing the overall dialog has no effect.

2016-05-25 Thread ADFH
Upstream asking for my specific version of GTK, and says to contact
Ubuntu maintainers first (I already have, and I linked this ticket too
as per instructions).

I'm aware that distributions have their own version numbers for things -
and I'm currently running an up to date Ubuntu Wily:

 $ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu 15.10
Release:15.10
Codename: wily

How can I get them the specific version number they're after?

2016-05-06 Thread ADFH
gvim does not do the same thing, and to create a new folder, it has
"Create Folder" button.

gedit DOES do the same thing, and to create a new folder, it has a "+"
button.

In the screenshot "example.png", you can see that the current folder is
"folder1" and I've typed in ../folder2 and pressed enter and it hasn't
switched to folder2, rather it's remained in the current folder.

This would seem to suggest the fact that it's not unique to Firefox and
therefore something to do with underlying library.

[Bug 1577879] [NEW] File save as dialog doesn't switch to keyed in path anymore when pressing enter

2016-05-03 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is in Nautilus or a GTK package or something else..

I run Unity as my desktop environment at the moment. With a recent
update, the file save dialog presented to me by Firefox appears to have
changed. I'm pretty sure it's an OS dialog and not a Firefox specific
control, but please feel free to bounce this to whichever package is
responsible for the File Save As dialog generated by Firefox 46.0 in
Ubuntu now.

In the past, when the save dialog came up, I was able to enter a path (absolute
or relative) in the filename field:
* If it was a directory path that existed, the directory contents would be
shown inside the window, allowing me to then specify a name
* If it was a directory path that didn't exist, it'd take me to the deepest
part of the path that did match
* If it was a directory that did exist, and a filename that didn't, it'd save
as that filename in that folder

The last is still true, but the others aren't anymore.. Say I have
structure:

home
.../folder
../sub2
../sub3

... and I last saved into sub3 and I want to save into sub2, if I remove
the filename from the name box, and I type ../sub2 and press enter, it
doesn't navigate to the folder anymore.. The auto-complete function
seems more reliable now, and it knows the folder exists, but the only
way to actually show its contents now would be to click through the
tree..

This feels like a functionality downgrade. I should be able to type a
pathname into the filename area of the dialog, press enter, and have it
take me to that particular folder.

[Bug 1530514] [NEW] unity-control-center datetime can be made to seize when sorting extra clocks by time

2016-01-01 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

I work on systems that are in multiple timezones, so I like to have
multiple clocks available to me at a glance so I can see what time it is
where those systems are running.

Due to an unrelated mistake, I did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu last
night, but maintained my user profile (separate drive).

1. I clicked on the clock in the system notification area, and selected Time &
Date Settings.
2. I ticked some boxes (Show a clock, Weekday, 24 hour time, seconds, monthly
calendar, include week numbers, time in other locations)
3. I clicked "Choose locations" and added Auckland, Adelaide, Perth, New York
and Dallas
4. I clicked add (+) again but before actually entering a title, I clicked
"Sort by time" (having clicked neither sort by time, nor sort by name
previously) ... nothing seemed to happen so I clicked it again a couple of times

It's at this point my hard disk started thrashing heavily for several
minutes and I lost control of my system until the IO subsided. I could
not SSH in from another system (I could authenticate it seems, but not
get a prompt) as if something was consuming all the available disk IO.

After a few moments, the system came good again.

It seems the key is to click the "+" but not complete the actual
location adding operation, as clicking "Sort by time" otherwise works
just fine.

[Bug 1325459] [NEW] Files tab of properties dialog doesn't offer horizontal scroll

2014-06-01 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

When downloading torrents with long filenames within the torrent, the
files dialog increases the width of the columns (such as the filename
column) so that the longer data can fit. This means that to see detail
such as the "priority" column, you need to resize the width of the
dialog to the columns which are pushed off...

... however, there is no horizontal scroll in the window, so you don't
know the content's missing unless you know to look for it.

I believe if the content in this dialog can scale past the viewable
area, then horizontal scroll needs to be provided.

The screenshot shows that the vertical scroll is enabled, but not the
horizontal.

[Bug 905619] Re: Latest version of gwibber doesn't offer a clear means of filtering

2012-02-14 Thread ADFH
Q1. Yes - the old version allowed creation of separate streams.. The new
version does not appear to support this stream concept.

Q2. 3.2.1

[Bug 905619] [NEW] Latest version of gwibber doesn't offer a clear means of filtering

2011-12-16 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

This'd definitely be a wishlist item.

The old version of gwibber, pre 11.10, had a clear way of filtering
which accounts you wanted to see at any one time. The new version, it
gets very confusing when one has three twitter accounts and two facebook
accounts. Also, the scrolling is very clunky with things compressing
then re-expanding with each line scrolled, making it very hard to
follow.

Is it possible in the new version to filter one's streams based on
account and not hashtag filtering? Is there still a UI for this?

... or is this more Gnome/Unity 'welding on the training wheels'?

[Bug 886593] [NEW] Keyboard selection of address autocomplete in email compose window fails

2011-11-05 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is a sylpheed bug or a desktop environment bug - as
it's only happened since I upgraded to Oneiric.

When I'm not using Google Apps, I use sylpheed as my mail client - I
like its low-fi HTML support and the fact it stores mail messages in a
maildir-esque structure as separate files.

Anyway, when composing a message in Sylpheed, as one types a message it
will try and autocomplete the email address you're typing. In the past,
I could use the down arrow to pick one of the alternatives. Now, trying
to use the down arrow or tab fails, it just moves on to the next field.
I have to grab the mouse to pick.

How do I use the keyboard to select from these pop-up options?

[Bug 886586] [NEW] apport-collect won't submit updates to a bug assigned to a source package when only a binary package of another name from that source is installed

2011-11-05 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

I have dante-client installed for the utility that comes with it,
"socksify".

I use socksify, when it works, in conjunction with ssh's "-D" SOCKS
proxy option to run network apps that don't normally support socks
through dynamic SSH tunnels (such as rdesktop and xvncviewer etc.).

Aaaanyway, I have bug #857598 open and wanted to update it, now that
I've upgraded to Oneiric (11.10) from Natty (11.04). When I went to run
apport-collect, it told me I couldn't run it because I don't have
package "dante" installed.

$ apport-collect 857598
Package dante not installed and no hook available, ignoring

Thing is, I've never had dante installed, only dante-client.

[Bug 857598] Re: socksify fails to run

2011-11-05 Thread ADFH
Hrrmm.. apport-collect complains I don't have dante installed when I
attempt to update my system details on this bug, as I don't have dante
installed, just dante-client.. When I try to change the bug to the
dante-client package however, it tells me it's a binary package and it's
going to log it against the source package.

Is this a bug in apport-collect?

[Bug 867543] [NEW] None of the zoom options seem to allow for 'scale to fit' behaviour

2011-10-04 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

In the past I could set gthumb to automatically scale images that were
too big down to the viewing window size, and those that were too small
up.

Now it seems the option to allow for the autoscaling of small images up
is no longer present - or at least the closest option that looks like it
should do that ("Fit to window") doesn't, only doing the first bit
(scaling down larger images) but not zooming smaller ones.

For viewing larger image sets of varying sizes - this is very
irritating. One has to hit + or Shift X or click a toolbar button
repeatedly. Could this functionality please be restored?

[Bug 857598] [NEW] socksify fails to run

2011-09-23 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

When I attempt to launch an application (in this case, xvncviewer)
through socksify, I get the message:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/lib/libdl.so.2' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be
preloaded: ignored.

This also happens when I tried to run telnet through it.

I have dante.conf configured to instruct socksify to open a SOCKS
connection to a port on the local system which in turn is opened by a
copy of SSH with the -D switch... very handy for running apps quickly on
remote firewalled machines which have accessible SSH hosts near them
without needing a full blown VPN or hand mapping the ports. Worked fine
in 10.04...

[Bug 842409] [NEW] Gnome menu convention: Alt+E, C is "Cut" and not "Copy"

2011-09-06 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Normally when working in an application in Gnome, generally when one
presses Alt+E, the Edit menu appears and then C will select "Copy". The
non-menu, direct alternative is Ctrl+C.

Pressing Alt+E, T will generally select "Cut". The non-menu direct
alternative is Ctrl+X

xmlcopyeditor doesn't follow this convention for the menu driven letter
shortcuts.

Instead, Alt+E, C does Cut ... and Copy is Alt+E, O - I find myself
cutting stuff all the time rather than copying.

This goes against convention in just about every Windows and Gnome app
I've used. I expect, from a usability perspective, for an application to
follow certain conventions.

Package: xmlcopyeditor 1.2.0.6-1build1

[Bug 682424] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Test tone only heard through speakers, not headphones

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
Tried installing latest daily kernel modules.. Auto switching happens on
rear/headphone output even though it still shows option to select in
sound control and stays on rear output even when it's switched to front.

Had to uninstall the beta driver as everything started sounded really
tinny (sampling rate issue?). Uninstalling the daily drivers fixed it.

Do you want me to:
* Retry with the daily drivers?
* Reinstall daily and lodge bug about tinny audio/sample rate issues?
* Retry with release drivers?

[Bug 795078] Re: No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
ok.. I'm man enough to admit when I've misdiagnosed something..
Though it's still not quite matching documented behaviour.

If I pause, it quits but stays in the sound menu, but it doesn't resume
from where it stopped. I swear the process was still running - perhaps
it's because I switched back and forth from notification area plugin and
something got toggled.. Either way, I guess you can close this ticket
again.

Further down on the same page it also states:

"Banshee should be altered to comply with the standard behavior: it
should keep playing if closed while playing, ***it should exit if closed
while not playing***, and it should restore location and other state on
relaunching. "

Or is someone playing a semantics game with "exit"?

[Bug 795078] Re: No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-11 Thread ADFH
Hi,

That same page, Sound Menu - Compliance, states:

"A compliant player should also keep playing if you close its window
while it is playing; exit if you close its window while it is not
playing; and remember exact state across sessions, so that after
exit and relaunch it is as if the player had never exited. " (Emphasis
mine)

I pause the music (so it's not playing) and go to look for quit option,
but it's not there.

Now you may argue that pausing is not stopping.. but from what I
understand, the stop button was also removed (no preference to show it
again either as far as I can see). So, I try another trick, I tick "Stop
when finished" in the playback menu, and then cue a song through to just
before the end. The player finally goes into idle state..

Still no quit option.. when it's been stopped. Close the window.. It
doesn't "exit if you close its window while it is not playing".

So, with all due respect, the application does not follow that policy
page quoted.

An end user shouldn't have to invoke something external to the program
UI if they want to terminate the program. Sounds like we're entering the
realm of old "Torment and Stay Resident" TSR programs..

[Bug 795078] [NEW] No quit (as opposed to hide) option when sound menu integration is on even when music paused in Ubuntu Classic/Gnome UI

2011-06-09 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

I'm not a huge fan of unity, so I run Gnome Classic as my desktop
environment. I recently decided to give Banshee a go after having used
Rhythmbox for a bit.

When sound menu integration is on within banshee, there is no "Quit"
option, even if the music is paused. Google hits seem to suggest there's
some magic keystrokes or clicks to do in unity interface, but in Gnome I
either have to kill process or disable sound menu integration and then
close the window.

Surely there should be a "Quit" option one can explicitly select? (I
understand overriding window close behaviour)

[Bug 682424] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Test tone only heard through speakers, not headphones

2011-06-08 Thread ADFH
I've upgraded to 11.04..

Pulseaudio control panel shows analog speaker and headphone output, but
doesn't output audio to headphones when headphones are selected.

Audio is output to both headphone socket and speaker socket when speaker
output is selected, but the headphones are a lot quieter and cannot be
heard until one turns off speakers and raises volume.

Analog audio inputs are now correctly labelled and functional (tested
front mic, rear mic, aux is listed but don't have a handy aux source).
