the same as before.

[Bug 1076232] Re: Build with tracker support

2013-07-03 Thread Aaron Brubacher
If this is desired to be a compile-time option that is fine with me. I
think its pretty obvious that the gnome3-team PPA should build nautilus
with tracker enabled. I'm surprised more people haven't complained yet.

[Bug 1076232] Re: Build with tracker support

2013-07-02 Thread Aaron Brubacher
wait...does that mean that mangelasakis' comment is incorrect? My
impression from his comment is that this is fixed in newer versions. I
tried switching to >3.6 but it was to much of a pain on 12.10. I'm gonna
upgrade soon anyways, for now I will stick to my custom build.

If the issue does still exist in gnome3-team's PPA then I definately
agree that it should be fixed in nautilus, ideally with a runtime config
option I think.

[Bug 1103183] [NEW] gedit does not start from gnome-shell files search in activities overview

2013-01-22 Thread Aaron Brubacher
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu 12.10 x64, gnome-shell 3.6.2, nautilus 3.6.3 compiled with
--enable-tracker=yes, Tracker 0.14.1,
gnome-documents not installed

Steps to reproduce:
-Make sure gedit is not running (killall gedit), or login in to freshly started
computer.
-open activities overview
-search for any plain text file and open it under the FILES heading
Expected behavior: file opens in gedit
Actual behavior: loading icon appears in top panel, but program never opens.
ps aux | grep gedit shows that the process is there. Opening a file a second
time from the Activities Overview works. Closing gedit and trying again results
in same behaviour.

[Bug 1089449] [NEW] nautilus 3.6 desktop image thumbnail resize blurry

2012-12-12 Thread Aaron Brubacher
Public bug reported:

When I resize an image on the desktop larger, it becomes blurry because
the thumbnail stretches. This was working properly not that long ago.
Zooming in within a regular nautilus window works fine, but the desktop
thumbnail resize does not. Icons (vector) resize fine, it's just images.

I looked around and found the previous bugs about this, it seems like
its supposed to be fixed by now. I think its a regression, unless
there's some setting? I already tried removing the .thumbnails folder
and restarting nautilus.

[Bug 191041] Re: gnome-screensaver blocks multimedia keys

This is still present on 12.10 with gnome-shell 3.6 (with the new lock screen,
which does allow controlling volume and music with the mouse only, but not with
keyboard)
Not sure if that should be a separate bug by now, or if its a separate package.

[Bug 1076232] [NEW] nautilus 3.6 tracker disabled

2012-11-07 Thread Aaron Brubacher
Public bug reported:

Searching for files on the activities overview does not work.
According to this bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687565
it is because
"Nautilus is built with "--enable-tracker=no" on Ubuntu."

It would be appreciated if this could be fixed so that file search on

I have Nautilus 3.6.2 (from http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/) on

[Bug 395967] Re: Play music from command line

2012-11-03 Thread Aaron Brubacher
As a workaround for playlists, I put this together for my startup:

#!/bin/sh
rhythmbox-client
sleep 10
listid=`dbus-send --type=method_call  --print-reply
--dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2
org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Playlists.GetPlaylists uint32:3 uint32:1
string:Alphabetical boolean:false | grep -o /.*0x[^\"]*`
dbus-send --type=method_call --print-reply
--dest=org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.rhythmbox /org/mpris/MediaPlayer2
org.mpris.MediaPlayer2.Playlists.ActivatePlaylist objpath:$listid

You can replace “uint32:3″ with the number (alphabetical) of the
playlist you want. this could be impoved to select by name as well

[Bug 1074712] [NEW] gnome-documents doesn not show plain text files

2012-11-03 Thread Aaron Brubacher
Public bug reported:

Searching for text files with in gnome-documents does not work, nor from
the activities overview. I frequently use plain text files (.txt) as
documents, so would like to have them searchable.

Even better, allow me to search for any file I want from the overview.

I do have tracker installed, and it is working great for other document
types.

[Bug 970686] Re: Activities search does not complete recent documents anymore

2012-10-29 Thread Aaron Brubacher
No I do not,
I understand that gnome-documents uses tracker, isn't there a way to use this
with just zeitgeist? I liked how it was before in 11.10 where files that you've
used before would show up, that way you don't need an indexer scanning the hard
drive.
If I have to use tracker, what's the point in having zeitgeist?

wow this a brutal regression as far as I'm concerned. Makes me want to consider
Unity.
Are there any decent workarounds at the moment?

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/62/journal/ is not bad, except for you
can't search it, and it requires a separate tab. (Ctrl+PgDn also switches tabs
in the Activities Overview, or try Ctrl+Alt+Tab)
(you might also want to try

[Bug 955579] Re: nautilus desktop freeze: EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

2012-03-14 Thread Aaron Brubacher
** Description changed:

Whenever focus enters or leaves my desktop (ie enter: click on desktop to
focus on it, leave: click on different window to leave the desktop), the
machine locks up for about 10-15 seconds, and Xorg process jumps to 100% during
the lockup. After this I can interact with the desktop, except for right click
still locks about for about 5 seconds each time. (X does not crash, it
continues working after the crash)
I use gnome3 and nautilus, fully updated ubuntu 11.10 x64. This consistently
starts occuring after using the computer for about 10 minutes.

Below is the output from Xorg.0.log. I have also attached the backtrace
during the freeze from attaching gdb to X over ssh (its more
interesting), and my xorg.conf (generated by nvidia-settings)

- My temporary workaround is to stop nautilus from handling the desktop,
- but I would really like to have it on. The stacktrace seems similar to
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
- drivers-177/+bug/294941
+ This started happening as soon as I installed gnome 3 (around January I
think), I never noticed it in Unity.

[Bug 955579] [NEW] nautilus desktop freeze: EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

2012-03-14 Thread Aaron Brubacher
Public bug reported:

Whenever focus enters or leaves my desktop (ie enter: click on desktop to focus
on it, leave: click on different window to leave the desktop), the machine
locks up for about 10-15 seconds, and Xorg process jumps to 100% during the
lockup. After this I can interact with the desktop, except for right click
still locks about for about 5 seconds each time. (X does not crash, it
continues working after the crash)
I use gnome3 and nautilus, fully updated ubuntu 11.10 x64. This consistently
starts occuring after using the computer for about 10 minutes.

Below is the output from Xorg.0.log. I have also attached the backtrace
during the freeze from attaching gdb to X over ssh (its more
interesting), and my xorg.conf (generated by nvidia-settings)

My temporary workaround is to stop nautilus from handling the desktop,
but I would really like to have it on. The stacktrace seems similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers-177/+bug/294941

I have tried both nvidia-current and nvidia-current-updates drivers with the
same results.
Desktop resolution is 2806x900, as seen in some of the arguments of the gdb
output. (using Twinview) but it also occurs in single monitor mode. (maybe less
often)

[Bug 268734] Re: immediate shutdown after pressing shutdown button

2012-03-01 Thread Aaron Brubacher
I am on Ubuntu 11.10 x64, fully updated.
Also, I ran the logout with a stress test to slow it down and noticed the 60
seconds change to 30 seconds, so it seems like its counting down really fast,
although I could be wrong about that.

[Bug 268734] Re: immediate shutdown after pressing shutdown button

2012-02-29 Thread Aaron Brubacher
When I press the power button or click shutdown in the user menu in
Gnome 3, the dialog box pops up for a fraction of a second before the
computer shuts down. At first it says something like "Waiting for apps
to quit" and then "Powering off the system"

Is this the same bug, or should I file a new bug report?

Also, when I click logoff from the user menu in Gnome 3, the
confirmation dialog box pops up ("Aaron Brubacher will be logged out
automatically in 60 seconds") for a fraction of a second, and then the
computer proceeds to logoff. Presumable they are related...

[Bug 900501] Re: Video import in Shotwell creates wrong date

2012-02-11 Thread Aaron Brubacher
this happens for me with videos as well, .avi from a "KODAK EASYSHARE C183",
and also with videos created from video editors.
The only problem with using Shotwell to change the video date is that i don't
think it saves to the file, so it is still incorrect when viewed in another
application/OS.
One possible fix to this problem in general is to use the file modification
time as a fallback, this would resolve the issue for me. This is already
reported as a possible fix for images at http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3300 I
think it should go for videos as well (as a default off option of course) I
will post at that bug.
In Windows Explorer/Live Photo Gallery, the date column automatically uses the
modification date as a backup as well.

It turns out this was only happening for me with .m4a files. I found the

which fixed the problem for me:

[Bug 879130] Re: invalid read (segfault) on duplicate lines in .hidden

2012-01-27 Thread Aaron Brubacher
I decided to keep looking at this since I had already started. Just to
be clear, the work around of removing duplicates from .hidden works fine
to fix this.

But here's what I found in the code (caution: I'm new to programming with
linux, feel free to correct me)
-The crash occurs because the GHashTable has a key_destroy_func and
g_hash_table_insert_node() is called with keep_new_key = false instead of true
in ghash.c
-In order to fix this, g_hash_table_replace() should be used instead of
g_hash_table_insert() in read_dot_hidden_file() in nautilus-directory-async.c.
I ran nautilus with this change and it didn't crash anymore.
-I did a quick search to see if this situation happens anywhere else in
Nautilus, the only spot I found is at nautilus-view.c:3315, but I'm not sure if
that's an issue or not.
-If I am correct, it seems strange that the comments in ghash.c for using
GHashTable as a set indicate that g_hash_table_insert should be used, when it
actually causes this issue.

[Bug 879130] Re: nautilus crashes when browsing folders on 11.10 with SIGABRT in raise()

2012-01-24 Thread Aaron Brubacher
turns out this actually happens when there is a duplicate entry in the .hidden
file.
it has nothing to do with ntfs drives. (i happened to browse a folder with the
problem on both of my machines)
I am not sure if this is worth fixing or not, most people will not run into it
much.

Reproduction steps:
1. create a .hidden file in any directory.
2. place a filename into the file twice (on separate lines). the filename does
not have to exist.
3. browse to the folder in nautilus and press ctrl+HOR browse to the
folder in nautilus and click on another folder, either a subfolder or any other
folder

** Description changed:

- opening nautilus and attempting to click on any folders in a NTFS
- drive/partition will consistently crash nautilus (also causing desktop
- icons to disappear), usually after clicking through one or two folders.
+ opening nautilus and attempting to click on any folders in a folder with
+ a .hidden file that has a duplicate entry will consistently crash
+ nautilus (also causing desktop icons to disappear).

i have attached terminal output from when the crash occurs, 2 seperate ones.
my system locks up (but mouse still moves, music keeps playing) when nautilus
is loading, after the 3rd line of terminal output.
+
+ I am not sure if this is worth fixing or not, most people will not run
+ into it much.

[Bug 879130] Re: nautilus crashes when browsing folders on 11.10 with SIGABRT in raise()

2012-01-23 Thread Aaron Brubacher
better stack trace attached.

** Attachment added: "good stack trace"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/879130/+attachment/2689890/+files/stacktrace_nautilus_better.txt

** Description changed:

- opening nautilus and attempting to click on any folders will
- consistently crash nautilus (also causing desktop icons to disappear),
- usually after clicking through one or two folders.
-
- this is a duplicate of
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client-gnome/trunk/+bug/865567
- but it is still happening for me with my system fully updated and both
ubuntuone and nautilus-open-terminal fully uninstalled.
+ opening nautilus and attempting to click on any folders in a NTFS
+ drive/partition will consistently crash nautilus (also causing desktop
+ icons to disappear), usually after clicking through one or two folders.

i have attached terminal output from when the crash occurs, 2 seperate ones.
my system locks up (but mouse still moves, music keeps playing) when nautilus
is loading, after the 3rd line of terminal output.

still occuring on my fully updated machine.
seems to only occur while browsing ntfs drive.
verified this on an old compaq presario V2000 fully updated with 64bit as well,
it only crashes while browsing ntfs drive.
occurs very consistantly on both machines, after clicking through 2 or 3
folders.

in case anyone is having issues where localhost is working but localhost

[Bug 761409] Re: Cannot click on left-most indicator on panel if a systray icon appears

2011-09-04 Thread Aaron Brubacher
the updated ppa fixes the problem for me.

there is an issue where a very rapid triple-click on the indicator icon when
there is a program maximized sometimes results in the indicator's menu going
under the window. (actually, I've only reproduced this with firefox)
I think i also saw it go under the desktop background when there were no
programs open.
But it was intermittant and I checked after using ppa-purge to remove the ppa
and it still happened, so i think the ppa is fine. its something you would
really only notice if you testing out the indicator icons :)

[Bug 779638] Re: Ubuntu 11.04. Unity-desktop upper bar menu, has some bugs with ASUS Geforce GT220 video card

2011-07-04 Thread Aaron Brubacher
I can confirm the same behavior. My systray is set to 'all' as well, and the
farthest left indicator icon is unclickable when there is 1 systray icon open.
(doesn't matter which systray icon or indicator icon it is, it is always the
farthest left indicator icon)
If I have 2 systray icons open, then the farthest left indicator icon seems to
work intermittently.

felix, does changing the number of systray icons open change any behavior for
you?

Note that if I have it set to 'all' but no systray icons open,
everything is fine.

hopefully this helps to narrow down this bug!

2011-07-03 Thread Aaron Brubacher
yes this happens to me all the time!
Sometimes it is both the network and the volume icon (i think), but mostly its
just the network icon that is not clickable.
workaround: click on the clock (or other indicator icon) and move mouse to the
left to open the network menu. I have to do this all the time.
I have a DELL Latitude D630.
Let me know if you need any more details.
