[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade
Perhaps this is no longer a kernel issue or at least no longer a regression. I am getting the same behavior with 4.14 and 4.13.11 and even the kernel from 17.04 . Normally when I am suspending at the end of the day I first close the laptop lid, then choose suspend from the menu on the external monitor... and that seems to work. [Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade
But that bisection may be leading toward a dead end or at least a moot point. The behavior which I am calling "bad" there is different from what I am currently seeing in later RCs and in 4.14.0. In, for example, my last "bad" commit 126f760ca94, upon suspend the machine does actually suspend but can't wake. In 4.14rc6, 4.14rc8, and 4.14, now upon suspend I am seeing the display power off and everything spins down but only for a moment -- then it immediately resumes. wifi and graphics seem to work OK at that point. The main remaining problem is just failure to remain suspended. That is true at least upon first suspend. In one of those builds I did see a case where a second suspend would spin down, try to spin up, but although the display backlight did come back on the machine remained unresponsive. I am not sure why the later RCs and in particular rc6 switched to this new failure mode. In my earlier notes it's clear that they used to be failing more like the way 126f760ca94 still behaves. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1726061 Title: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1726061/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade
To summarize my earlier comments: All the below relates to suspend/resume of 17.10. Suspend/resume works fine if I boot with the 4.10-based Ubuntu kernel from 17.04, or any 4.13 mainline kernel starting from 4.13.5 . The mainline kernels from 4.13 through 4.13.4, upon which the Ubuntu kernel is built, all suspend OK but have problems on resume-- the machine comes up but wifi does not connect. Once that happens I cannot reboot or shut down normally, only by holding the power button. The mainline kernels from 4.13.5 to 4.13.11 resume OK. The mainline kernels from 4.14.rc1 to 4.14.rc7 have issues on suspend and cannot properly resume -- display does not come on and the machine does not respond to ssh from elsewhere. Again I am forced to hold the power button down for hard shutdown.

[Bug 1600092] [NEW] radeon: monitor connected to onboard VGA doesn't work with Xenial
Public bug reported: [In comments on 1579481 I mentioned that I had found and cherry-picked a fix from upstream. I was asked to file another bug so that my hardware information could be compared. apport will show kernel version 4.4.0-24 but the issue is reproducible on 4.4.0-28 as well-- just didn't want to uninstall my fixed version in order to post my hardware info.] I have an AMD based desktop system with onboard/APU graphics. I have a monitor which had been hooked up via DVI until yesterday. Picked up a nice refurbished monitor which I plugged in to the onboard DVI port, and moved the other monitor to the VGA port. Ubuntu recognizes it but it does not show anything. Monitor works fine during initial boot/BIOS. dmesg says: [3.311243] [drm] Initialized radeon 2.43.0 20080528 for :00:01.0 on minor 0 [ 16.843630] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* clock recovery reached max voltage [ 16.843663] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* clock recovery failed Searching for those errors I found bug 1579481 which says it is fixed upstream, so I went searching for which commit might have fixed it, and I found this one: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c8213a638f65bf487c10593c216525952cca3690 I built a packaged kernel from xenial git source plus that one commit, and when I boot that kernel, the monitor in the VGA port works fine. Probably worth adding that commit to the official Xenial kernel since others stated that the issue is a regression. [Bug 1076034] [NEW] Quantal's eclipse doesn't work with Android Developer Tools plug-in
Public bug reported: I have been using the ADT plugins with eclipse from universe in 12.04 and earlier releases. After upgrading to 12.10, ADT no longer works. Perhaps my previous note oversimplified matters. I noted this message in .xsession-errors after failed login: compiz (unityshell) - Error: GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported But unity_support_test when run later does show GL vertex buffer object as I noted above. [Bug 753971] Re: Display garbled when connecting external displays
Might be useful to throw in some hibernate/resume test cases. I installed 3.8.16 on my Inspiron 1545. Based on my impressions so far I am afraid I will probably be bumping back down to 3.8.10 in the near future. I have from time to time had the screen remain completely black on resume. I can switch to a virtual terminal, log in, and run sudo service restart gdm and then I get noise as if gdm is restarting but the screen remains black. That behavior was occasional with 3.8.10 and may have something to do with resuming with the external monitor in a different plugged/unplugged state from when the system entered hibernation. However on 3.8.16 I could see the screen blanking out the same why while hibernation was starting... and it resumed to that unhappy state. So far it's just one data point but I am not encouraged. Still a problem in Maverick. As in previous releases it seems to be a problem only when Visual Effects are turned on. [Bug 662430] [NEW] ssvnc hangs X server while toggling FullScreen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ssvnc Description:Ubuntu 10.10 Release:10.10 After opening a VNC session, FullScreen status can be toggled either via the F8 popup menu, or through a dedicated F9 key binding. Using the F8 popup menu seems to work fine. Using F9 repeatedly tends to hang the X server after a few on/off toggles. In Lucid I could toggle a couple dozen times in quick succession without issues. In order to reproduce the hang it seems to be necessary for the VNC session in question to be larger than the current display. For example I am running on a 1600x900 monitor and connecting to a 1600x1200 VNC session (started with vnc4server -geometry 1600x1200). I'm filing this initially against ssvnc because that is the only pre- built application against which I can reproduce it. However I suspect the actual problem might be closer to the X server code. The hang does not seem to be reproducible when visual effects are turned on. Also I have a hacked copy of vnc4viewer in which the FullScreen toggle is bound to F12, and a similar hang seems to be reproducible with that viewer. Reproduced on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Intel 4500MHD graphics. ssvnc: Installed: 1.0.27-1 xserver-xorg-video-intel: Installed: 2:2.12.0-1ubuntu5 ** Affects: ssvnc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ssvnc hangs X server while toggling FullScreen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/662430 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)
Peter, thanks for your response. The edgy kernel is still on my machine and still listed in grub, so I booted it... I wasn't sure what you meant by ensure you have a valid swap partition, so I asked Google and found bug 66637. Before following the instructions there I checked /etc /initramfs-tools/conf.d/initramfs-tools/resume against the UUID in /dev/disks/by-uuid and they matched. So I tried hibernate, and it worked. Just hibernated again in the middle of composing this and firefox still had my entry... so I guess it smells like a duplicate. Assuming that the act of installing the new kernel happened to straighten out the initramfs setting as a side-effect? Interestingly, bcm43xx is working with the edgy kernel now, though I will probably go back to ndiswrapper for now since bcm43xx has some quirks as mentioned above. It still works, but I'm finding myself confused about the cause. Just wanted to mention that I did not upgrade from dapper to edgy on the same partition... it was a fresh install on a partition that used to contain a different distribution which I used before dapper. (Yes, edgy's installer reformatted that partition.) Both dapper and edgy installs share the same swap partition, but I don't think I had hibernated dapper recently before the install, and I don't think I had the symptoms of other people with the upgrade issue, in that I think my swap partition was probably actually being used for swap. (Only 512MB RAM on this machine.) Also, the fact that I could ssh to the machine makes me think it mostly was resuming OK except for some detail related to the display. [Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)
Seems to be a kernel issue. This a href=http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-298903.html;thread/a suggested trying a new kernel, so I built the dev kernel for edgy, and now I can hibernate and resume just fine. Still some small issues with bcm43xx not getting the right bitrate at startup, but anyway I can suspend now. Just for the record, I had tried suspend without ndiswrapper loaded and it didn't help, so that's not the issue. [Bug 58962] Re: User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time
I have come up with a way to reproduce this crash. It seems to be triggered by some GNOME functionality which may or may not be supported in Ubuntu but is configured by Mandriva by default. (We switched recently and mostly kept our home directories intact.) Mandriva configures a bunch of file browser bookmarks with translated names. It accomplishes this by creating a hidden directory containing some .desktop files. The file contains a link to the user's folders, such as Documents, and translations for the name Documents in lots of languages. Attaching such a file. To reproduce the crash: (I did this in a new user account created in dapper) Make sure your Documents folder has more than one screenful of files. Make a folder in your home directory called bookmarks. Put the attached .desktop file there. Edit it to reference the actual path to your Documents folder. Add a line to ~/.gtk-bookmarks which contains a file: URL to the .desktop file. (example: file:///home/aaron/bookmarks/documents-mdk.desktop) Launch gedit. It should start in your Documents folder. Here's where some acrobatics are sometimes necessary. In my wife's account it usually crashed right away. In the other account (possibly related to building libgnomeui debug/unoptimized) I have to actually poke the dialog at this point to make it crash: Scrolling the mouse wheel up and down repeatedly usually makes it crash within 15 seconds or so. Also, clicking the Documents shortcut again and then scrolling usually makes it crash, sometimes just when the mouse focus moves back to the file list. The traceback is always the same. Right, the traceback. Pasted below. To get this level of detail, I had to rebuild the libgnomeui package unoptimized... before doing that, there were a couple levels which were showing optimized out for some variable names. I did spend some time poking around in the debugger but I didn't actually find the bug. The memory management in the file chooser is pretty intricate. gtk_file_folder_gnome_vfs_dispose() is called twice for each folder object being freed. In the first call most of the values are freed but the object itself is freed later in an idle callback. So it's a little tricky to figure out which caller is freeing the structure that is still being referenced in another folder's hash. #0 IA__g_hash_table_lookup (hash_table=0x4400, key=0x84cd1d0) at ghash.c:242 #1 0xb4245f65 in lookup_folder_child_from_uri (folder=0x8489918, uri=0x84cd1d0 file:///home/bugdemo/Documents/c.txt, error=0x0) at gtkfilesystemgnomevfs.c:2341 #2 0xb42460c3 in lookup_folder_child (folder=0x8489918, path=0x849f798, error=0x0) at gtkfilesystemgnomevfs.c:2390 #3 0xb4244f7d in get_vfs_info (file_system=0x8482060, path=0x849f798, types=GTK_FILE_INFO_MIME_TYPE) at gtkfilesystemgnomevfs.c:1708 #4 0xb4245107 in gtk_file_system_gnome_vfs_render_icon ( file_system=0x8482060, path=0x849f798, widget=0x848, pixel_size=16, error=0x0) at gtkfilesystemgnomevfs.c:1785 #5 0xb7b385c0 in IA__gtk_file_system_render_icon (file_system=0x8482060, path=0x849f798, widget=0x848, pixel_size=16, error=0x4400) at gtkfilesystem.c:699 #6 0xb7b2dee6 in list_icon_data_func (tree_column=0x81f5a48, cell=0x84cd1d0, tree_model=0x84921f8, iter=0x0, data=0x848) at gtkfilechooserdefault.c:7095 #7 0xb7c539c5 in IA__gtk_tree_view_column_cell_set_cell_data ( tree_column=0x81f5a48, tree_model=0x84921f8, iter=0xbf9fa9b4, is_expander=0, is_expanded=0) at gtktreeviewcolumn.c:2553 #8 0xb7c4386e in gtk_tree_view_expose (widget=0x84770e0, event=0xbf9fafb0) at gtktreeview.c:3658 #9 0xb7b7e8e0 in _gtk_marshal_BOOLEAN__BOXED (closure=0x8136f80, return_value=0xbf9fabd0, n_param_values=2, param_values=0xbf9faccc, invocation_hint=0xbf9fabbc, marshal_data=0xb7c43337) at gtkmarshalers.c:83 #10 0xb71ff16f in g_type_class_meta_marshal (closure=0x8136f80, return_value=0x84cd1d0, n_param_values=139252176, param_values=0xbf9faccc, invocation_hint=0x84cd1d0, marshal_data=0x84cd1d0) at gclosure.c:567 #11 0xb71ff79f in IA__g_closure_invoke (closure=0x8136f80, return_value=0x84cd1d0, n_param_values=139252176, param_values=0x84cd1d0, invocation_hint=0x84cd1d0) at gclosure.c:490 #12 0xb720e9ce in signal_emit_unlocked_R (node=0x8136e60, detail=0, instance=0x84770e0, emission_return=0xbf9fae8c, instance_and_params=0xbf9faccc) at gsignal.c:2476 #13 0xb720f886 in IA__g_signal_emit_valist (instance=0x84770e0, signal_id=48, detail=0, var_args=0xbf9faf10 (¯\237¿°¯\237¿ÂàpG\b\002\017Æ·àpG\bø\t\023\b) at gsignal.c:2207 #14 0xb720fe89 in IA__g_signal_emit (instance=0x84cd1d0, signal_id=139252176, detail=139252176) at gsignal.c:2241 #15 0xb7c60dcf in gtk_widget_event_internal (widget=0x84770e0, event=0xbf9fafb0) at gtkwidget.c:3751 #16 0xb7b7d626 in IA__gtk_main_do_event (event=0xbf9fafb0) at gtkmain.c:1405 #17 0xb7a0edd7 in gdk_window_process_updates_internal

[Bug 58962] Re: User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time
Got some debug info installed, though not quite enough. The dbg package for libgtk-2.0 doesn't seem to include some of the module subdirectories so I can't see what's going on in libgnome-vfs.so. Traceback with partial symbols below. What I can see is that we seem to be crashing while trying to update the icon for the first file in the Documents folder. Looks like the hash table we are looking in is bogus. After looking in the debugger and speculating a bit, I can make it crash on my account sometimes. (Not as consistently as on my wife's account.) Seems to depend on using a largish font-- e.g. Bitstream Vera Sans Roman 12-- and having more than one screenful of files in the Documents folder. [Bug 58962] User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time
Public bug reported: On one of my home machines this crash affects my wife's account but not mine. Any application which uses GNOME file dialogs will crash when she accesses a file dialog -- open or save. Observed with gnome, gaim, gimp, openoffice.org. Workaround for the last one is to use OOO's own file dialogs, but for native GNOME applications it's not that simple. We did come up with the workaround of launching a VNC session in which she has an xterm and metacity and gimp, but nothing else-- and in there GIMP works fine with the file dialogs. Possibly related to 53355, but much more widespread than just firefox. Also we use regular Ubuntu Dapper, not kubuntu. The latest dapper updates have been applied... for example gtk+20 package version is 2.8.20-0ubuntu1. [Bug 58962] Re: User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time
Looks like I left out some machine information: the machine is using the i386 install (Pentium III 866MHz coppermine). Graphics card is an old nvidia card, not using the proprietary driver at the moment. The exact card probably doesn't matter because the crash reproduces in a VNC session as long as gnome-session is run. Also in looking for related bugs which might render this a duplicate I saw some mention of file permissions in the user's home directory. I did find some files owned by root in some subdirectories, and chown'd them to my wife's account, but it didn't help. -- User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time https://launchpad.net/bugs/58962 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
