[Bug 1933716] Re: Black screen on boot after stable update

2021-10-17 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Tried some recent mainline kernels again. No luck with 5.13.19, but
5.14.13 is using both displays just fine. (Earlier I had tried 5.14.3
with no luck.)

[Bug 1933716] Re: Black screen on boot after stable update

2021-10-17 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Still happens on 21.10's 5.13.16-051316-generic with a fairly new HP
Pavilion 15. The workaround from Arch doesn't quite help -- internal
monitor did work after that but external display is not detected.

[Bug 1867462] Re: Desktop-icons extension runs, shows icons, even when disabled

2020-05-23 Thread Aaron Peromsik
The user experience leaves a lot to be desired. At extensions.gnome.org
it shows as an extension which can be disabled and has updates. When I
turn it off, it doesn't turn off, and when I try to update it, it says I
can't update it because it is not turned off. Other extensions don't
work that way.

[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade

2017-11-14 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Perhaps this is no longer a kernel issue or at least no longer a
regression. I am getting the same behavior with 4.14 and 4.13.11 and
even the kernel from 17.04 . Normally when I am suspending at the end of
the day I first close the laptop lid, then choose suspend from the menu
on the external monitor... and that seems to work. Not sure how long the
suspend menu has not worked with the laptop lid left open but today I
still get it if I boot 17.04 from a different partition.

[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade

2017-11-14 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Upon initially booting either 4.13.11 or 4.14.0 I see 1 in active_count for
ACAD, and zeros elsewhere. When 4.14.0 has immediately resumed from suspend and
shows additional events from the lid and the power button, I have not touched
either of those in the course of attempting to suspend.

Attached /proc/acpi/wakeup from 4.14.0 ; in 4.13.11 it seems identical.

4.13.11 has been suspending OK but today it is not -- instead it behaves
exactly like 4.14.0 .

[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade

2017-11-12 Thread Aaron Peromsik
But that bisection may be leading toward a dead end or at least a moot
point. The behavior which I am calling "bad" there is different from
what I am currently seeing in later RCs and in 4.14.0.

In, for example, my last "bad" commit 126f760ca94, upon suspend the
machine does actually suspend but can't wake.

In 4.14rc6, 4.14rc8, and 4.14, now upon suspend I am seeing the display
power off and everything spins down but only for a moment -- then it
immediately resumes. wifi and graphics seem to work OK at that point.
The main remaining problem is just failure to remain suspended.

That is true at least upon first suspend. In one of those builds I did
see a case where a second suspend would spin down, try to spin up, but
although the display backlight did come back on the machine remained
unresponsive.

I am not sure why the later RCs and in particular rc6 switched to this
new failure mode. In my earlier notes it's clear that they used to be
failing more like the way 126f760ca94 still behaves.

[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade

2017-11-07 Thread Aaron Peromsik
To summarize my earlier comments: All the below relates to
suspend/resume of 17.10.

Suspend/resume works fine if I boot with the 4.10-based Ubuntu kernel
from 17.04, or any 4.13 mainline kernel starting from 4.13.5 .

The mainline kernels from 4.13 through 4.13.4, upon which the Ubuntu
kernel is built, all suspend OK but have problems on resume-- the
machine comes up but wifi does not connect. Once that happens I cannot
reboot or shut down normally, only by holding the power button.

The mainline kernels from 4.13.5 to 4.13.11 resume OK.

The mainline kernels from 4.14.rc1 to 4.14.rc7 have issues on suspend
and cannot properly resume -- display does not come on and the machine
does not respond to ssh from elsewhere. Again I am forced to hold the
power button down for hard shutdown.

[Bug 1726061] Re: Inspiron 5565 suspend issues after 17.10 upgrade

2017-10-24 Thread Aaron Peromsik
4.14-rc6 is even worse -- I can't wake the machine after suspend at all,
except by rebooting with long-press of the power button.

I tested other mainline kernels too. All 4.13-based mainline kernels I
tested behave similar to the shipped Ubuntu kernel, from 4.13.4 down
back to 4.13rc1. (incomplete suspend, on resume wifi doesn't connect,
turn off wifi button does nothing, reboot only hard way)

The mainline 4.12.14 kernel worked fine for me; suspend/resume were OK.

[Bug 1682542] Re: Add support for top bars on all monitors to allow for multi-monitor support in primary extensions - apps-menu, places-menu, topbar, etc

2017-04-28 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Users switching from Unity to GNOME... or from almost any other
environment to GNOME... are going to find the current panel arrangement
inconvenient. I am not used to moving the mouse all the way to the far
edge of the other monitor when I want to log out, or suspend, or adjust
volume... and I shouldn't have to.

[Bug 1600092] [NEW] radeon: monitor connected to onboard VGA doesn't work with Xenial

2016-07-07 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

[In comments on 1579481 I mentioned that I had found and cherry-picked a
fix from upstream. I was asked to file another bug so that my hardware
information could be compared. apport will show kernel version 4.4.0-24
but the issue is reproducible on 4.4.0-28 as well-- just didn't want to
uninstall my fixed version in order to post my hardware info.]

I have an AMD based desktop system with onboard/APU graphics. I have a
monitor which had been hooked up via DVI until yesterday. Picked up a
nice refurbished monitor which I plugged in to the onboard DVI port, and
moved the other monitor to the VGA port. Ubuntu recognizes it but it
does not show anything. Monitor works fine during initial boot/BIOS.

dmesg says:

[3.311243] [drm] Initialized radeon 2.43.0 20080528 for :00:01.0 on
minor 0
[ 16.843630] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* clock recovery
reached max voltage
[ 16.843663] [drm:radeon_dp_link_train [radeon]] *ERROR* clock recovery failed

Searching for those errors I found bug 1579481 which says it is fixed
upstream, so I went searching for which commit might have fixed it, and
I found this one:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c8213a638f65bf487c10593c216525952cca3690

I built a packaged kernel from xenial git source plus that one commit,
and when I boot that kernel, the monitor in the VGA port works fine.
Probably worth adding that commit to the official Xenial kernel since
others stated that the issue is a regression.

[Bug 1579481] Re: 16.04 -> External Monitor not working -> radeon VCE init error (-110)

2016-07-07 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Confirmed: typing this on my second screen, connected via VGA, after
cherry-picking the commit I linked to in #28. Without that commit the
second screen was recognized but remained dark while connected to the
VGA port of my Kaveri-based desktop. Same monitor had been fine when
connected via DVI.

The machine works fine with 3.19.0-16, which I built with one extra
commit for bug 1448942. Since that fix has since been merged in master-
next I was trying to test a newer kernel to see when I can get back out
of the business of building my own. My first try failed due to a hang
that was later fixed by commit 1ece1db, and my second try left me here.

[Bug 1272942] [NEW] indicator-sound uses too much cpu under lightdm greeter

2014-01-26 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

When nobody is logged in on console, but pulseaudio and mpd are running,
indicator-sound uses 50-70% of CPU. This is bad for power consumption
and also bad for background jobs running in a vnc4server session.

[Bug 1076034] [NEW] Quantal's eclipse doesn't work with Android Developer Tools plug-in

2012-11-07 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

I have been using the ADT plugins with eclipse from universe in 12.04
and earlier releases. After upgrading to 12.10, ADT no longer works. I
tried deleting my ~/.eclipse directory and reinstalling ADT; I also
tried installing ADT as root, as suggested in one Ask Ubuntu answer. No
matter what I do, the Android-related buttons (SDK manager, for example)
don't seem to show up in eclipse.

The ADT plug-in works fine with eclipse downloaded from eclipse.org --
but for the packaged version of eclipse, it seems this is a regression
which should be fixed.

Running Quantal amd64 on a Dell Inspiron 1545. ADT installed as
described here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/installing-
adt.html

[Bug 876879] Re: Lost Launcher and upper Task Bar (Unity3D on 11.10)

2011-10-26 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Perhaps my previous note oversimplified matters. I noted this message in
.xsession-errors after failed login:

compiz (unityshell) - Error: GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported

But unity_support_test when run later does show GL vertex buffer
object as I noted above. It seems that something causes the necessary
OpenGL extension to get loaded some time after compiz first tries to
start. glxinfo run from a terminal does show the extension, but run from
~/.gnomerc it shows a bunch of extensions in ~/.xsession-errors but
GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object isn't one of them.

What can we do to make the extension get loaded in time, or delay compiz
start until it is loaded?

2011-10-25 Thread Aaron Peromsik
I too have a Dell laptop upgraded from 11.04. Not sure if the behavior I
am seeing is related though. In 11.04, Unity was working fairly well. In
11.10 it does not start at login-- instead I get a Nautilus menu. If I
switch to a virtual terminal and run unity --replace and then switch
back to X, then unity does run for that session only. If I run ccsm,
unity exits again when I exit ccsm. If I try to log in with another
session type, such as Ubuntu 2D or Classic, I get the same behavior--
seems it is trying to run Unity anyway, and fails.

[Bug 753971] Re: Display garbled when connecting external displays

2011-06-27 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Might be useful to throw in some hibernate/resume test cases. I
installed 3.8.16 on my Inspiron 1545. Based on my impressions so far I
am afraid I will probably be bumping back down to 3.8.10 in the near
future.

I have from time to time had the screen remain completely black on
resume. I can switch to a virtual terminal, log in, and run sudo
service restart gdm and then I get noise as if gdm is restarting but
the screen remains black. That behavior was occasional with 3.8.10 and
may have something to do with resuming with the external monitor in a
different plugged/unplugged state from when the system entered
hibernation. However on 3.8.16 I could see the screen blanking out the
same why while hibernation was starting... and it resumed to that
unhappy state. So far it's just one data point but I am not encouraged.

That said, the plug/unplug behavior does seem somewhat better with
3.8.16.

[Bug 645498] Re: Laptop fails to hibernate with Maverick

2011-05-23 Thread Aaron Peromsik
On my Inspiron 1545, hibernate / resume work much better in Natty--
better than Maverick, and probably also better than Lucid. Resume from
hibernate in particular is much faster and smoother than it has ever
been. Time required to hibernate is also quite reasonable. Maverick
would fail to hibernate every so often, hanging instead... but I haven't
seen any such issues in Natty so far.

[Bug 589524] Re: Microsoft Office LiveMeeting hangs with tiny window

2010-11-19 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Forum user claims to have found a workaround.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10135213postcount=8

I have not confirmed, but if true that should help someone identify
where the bug is and maybe fix it.

[Bug 275089] Re: No Shift+Click in xvnc4viewer

2010-10-17 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Still a problem in Maverick. As in previous releases it seems to be a
problem only when Visual Effects are turned on. I have been leaving them
off for a couple years or so as a workaround for this issue.
Unfortunately Maverick has another issue for which there is a workaround
of turning visual effects *on*. (I probably can't file that other one
separately because it seems to be only reproducible on my hacked copy of
vncviewer, which has a one-button toggle for FullScreen mode bound to
F12. But without visual effects turned on, that FullScreen toggle seems
to hang the X server.)

[Bug 662430] [NEW] ssvnc hangs X server while toggling FullScreen

2010-10-17 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ssvnc

Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

After opening a VNC session, FullScreen status can be toggled either via the F8
popup menu, or through a dedicated F9 key binding. Using the F8 popup menu
seems to work fine. Using F9 repeatedly tends to hang the X server after a few
on/off toggles. In Lucid I could toggle a couple dozen times in quick
succession without issues.

In order to reproduce the hang it seems to be necessary for the VNC
session in question to be larger than the current display. For example I
am running on a 1600x900 monitor and connecting to a 1600x1200 VNC
session (started with vnc4server -geometry 1600x1200).

I'm filing this initially against ssvnc because that is the only pre-
built application against which I can reproduce it. However I suspect
the actual problem might be closer to the X server code. The hang does
not seem to be reproducible when visual effects are turned on. Also I
have a hacked copy of vnc4viewer in which the FullScreen toggle is
bound to F12, and a similar hang seems to be reproducible with that
viewer.

Reproduced on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Intel 4500MHD graphics.

[Bug 589524] [NEW] Microsoft Office LiveMeeting hangs with tiny window

2010-06-03 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

I used to use Microsoft Office LiveMeeting Web client without problems
in Karmic and before that. In Karmic I was using sun-java5-plugin but
that is no longer available in Lucid, so now I use sun-java6-plugin.

Luckily they have a test page... Browsing to
https://www125.livemeeting.com/cc/test2007/webJoin?id=LiveMeeting2007Testpw=role=attendcn=user
and clicking Join Meeting, (then if needed, allow popups for that page
and click Join Meeting again) a window comes up to host the applet and
has a bunch of Loading... messages. Then they all go away, and a
separate Java Applet Window comes up with almost no size, centered in
the middle of the screen. And then nothing happens.

In one of my tests firefox hung at that point, but usually firefox is
still responsive but the applet does nothing.

Again, this all worked fine in Karmic with sun-java5-jre. When it works,
from the URL above you wind up looking at a remote powerpoint slide that
says it worked.

[Bug 192735] Re: mpd no access to soundcard using pulseaudio

2009-11-26 Thread Aaron Peromsik
My first impression when reading #17 was that it shouldn't be necessary
to use system mode for PulseAudio to get mpd to work right. In Jaunty I
had it working as desired without changing /etc/default/pulseaudio. The
mpd wiki page referenced above seems to say that mpd can launch
pulseaudio itself as needed... however the suggestions there didn't help
in Karmic.

In Karmic, running pulseaudio in system mode seems to be required to use
mpd as a server that keeps running regardless of whether a desktop user
is logged in. For mpd to work with pulse in system mode I had to add the
tcp setting mentioned above in comment #8 to /etc/pulse/system.pa (not
default.pa, which would be used for user mode).

[Bug 427462] Re: login screen is showing user below 1000

I have been going around renumbering my user id's on my home machines,
which all had real users' numbers starting from 600 due to switching
from Mandriva back in the Dapper time frame. The old gdm used to respect
the setting in /etc/gnome-system-tools/users/profiles . It would be nice

Merged the latest Debian changes and they do seem to fix the problem. I
am relatively new at the PPA thing, but I did upload a karmic package to

case it will help someone. Although the package was built against karmic
I installed it on my apt-cacher server which is still running jaunty and
it seems to work fine. It's rather refreshing to be able to hit the
Check button in update-manager and not get error messages.

Might be worth an update for Jaunty. When attempting to do a dist-

[Bug 194714] Re: [Hardy] ndiswrapper does not function with 2.6.24, causes lockup and instability

2008-06-01 Thread Aaron Peromsik
I'm a bit confused about the GPL-symbol kernel thing. ndiswrapper has
been working fine for me on Hardy since I followed the directions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Feisty_No-
Fluff#head-cbc75fcb762da2057fa8dbe904358e4b611353c0

Why is it working, if the GPL-symbol problem is the issue? Is it a
matter of using WEP vs WPA? I use WEP... (along with secure protocols of
course). Or does it vary by hardware? I'm using an M6805 with built-in
Broadcom 4306.

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-18 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Peter, thanks for your response. The edgy kernel is still on my machine
and still listed in grub, so I booted it... I wasn't sure what you meant
by ensure you have a valid swap partition, so I asked Google and found
bug 66637. Before following the instructions there I checked /etc
/initramfs-tools/conf.d/initramfs-tools/resume against the UUID in
/dev/disks/by-uuid and they matched. So I tried hibernate, and it
worked. Just hibernated again in the middle of composing this and
firefox still had my entry... so I guess it smells like a duplicate.
Assuming that the act of installing the new kernel happened to
straighten out the initramfs setting as a side-effect?

Interestingly, bcm43xx is working with the edgy kernel now, though I
will probably go back to ndiswrapper for now since bcm43xx has some
quirks as mentioned above.

Thanks again,

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-18 Thread Aaron Peromsik
It still works, but I'm finding myself confused about the cause. Just
wanted to mention that I did not upgrade from dapper to edgy on the same
partition... it was a fresh install on a partition that used to contain
a different distribution which I used before dapper. (Yes, edgy's
installer reformatted that partition.) Both dapper and edgy installs
share the same swap partition, but I don't think I had hibernated dapper
recently before the install, and I don't think I had the symptoms of
other people with the upgrade issue, in that I think my swap partition
was probably actually being used for swap. (Only 512MB RAM on this
machine.) Also, the fact that I could ssh to the machine makes me think
it mostly was resuming OK except for some detail related to the display.

Might there be some other bug in the installer that got corrected or
worked around when I added the feisty kernel?

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-17 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Seems to be a kernel issue. This a
href=http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-298903.html;thread/a
suggested trying a new kernel, so I built the dev kernel for edgy, and
now I can hibernate and resume just fine. Of course nothing is that
simple: with the new kernel, ndiswrapper doesn't work, but bcm43xx
does-- reverse of my experience with 2.6.17. Still some small issues
with bcm43xx not getting the right bitrate at startup, but anyway I can
suspend now. Just for the record, I had tried suspend without
ndiswrapper loaded and it didn't help, so that's not the issue.
Currently running 2.6.20-6-ref-386 built per instructions a

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 67164 ***

prevu is a tool from the Ubuntu Backports project
(backports.ubuntuforums.org). It's a fairly thin wrapper around
pbuilder. In building packages for edgy (for my own use) I was mostly
following guidelines from this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=268687 .

[Bug 67432] Re: evince does'nt print correctly

2006-12-20 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Seems to be fixed by evince 0.70, which I backported from feisty using
prevu. I wonder if it might be worth an official update. Only thing is I
also had to backport gnome-icon-theme... but I haven't noticed any bad
effects from this.

[Bug 75177] eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2006-12-09 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vbetool

The fact that hibernate worked perfectly in dapper on my eMachines m6805
was one of the factors that convinced me to move to Ubuntu.
Unfortunately since I moved to edgy hibernate no longer works. The
graphics chip is ATI Mobility Radeon 9600. I'm using the stock (open-
source) ati driver. (I tried fglrx for fun but it didn't help, so I
switched back.) I have tried many permutations of the settings in
/etc/default/acpi-support but nothing seems to help.

After ignoring the problem for a while I have spent the last week
scouring forum postings and bug reports from different people with
similar problems in older releases and/or on different hardware, but
none of the suggestions I found have helped. In particular, when I run
(from console)

vbetool vbestate save /tmp/vbe
vbetool vbestate restore /tmp/vbe

I get a message Function not supported, and then the screen goes
blank. (At that point I can switch to a different console and switch
back.) In my dapper install nothing bad happens when I run vbetool
vbestate restore.

When I actually hibernate and resume, the system comes up OK but the
screen is garbled. The system doesn't seem to respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1
etc, but Ctrl-Alt-Del works and I can ssh to the machine, so it seems to
be just a video problem.

I do have my dapper install still around for testing if needed. I should
mention that the dapper install is 64-bit and the edgy install is
32-bit.

[Bug 58962] Re: User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time

2006-09-16 Thread Aaron Peromsik
I have come up with a way to reproduce this crash. It seems to be
triggered by some GNOME functionality which may or may not be supported
in Ubuntu but is configured by Mandriva by default. (We switched
recently and mostly kept our home directories intact.)

Mandriva configures a bunch of file browser bookmarks with translated
names. It accomplishes this by creating a hidden directory containing
some .desktop files. The file contains a link to the user's folders,
such as Documents, and translations for the name Documents in lots of
languages. Attaching such a file.

To reproduce the crash: (I did this in a new user account created in
dapper)

Make sure your Documents folder has more than one screenful of files.
Make a folder in your home directory called bookmarks.
Put the attached .desktop file there. Edit it to reference the actual path to
your Documents folder.
Add a line to ~/.gtk-bookmarks which contains a file: URL to the .desktop file.
(example: file:///home/aaron/bookmarks/documents-mdk.desktop)
Launch gedit. It should start in your Documents folder.

Here's where some acrobatics are sometimes necessary. In my wife's
account it usually crashed right away. In the other account (possibly
related to building libgnomeui debug/unoptimized) I have to actually
poke the dialog at this point to make it crash: Scrolling the mouse
wheel up and down repeatedly usually makes it crash within 15 seconds or
so. Also, clicking the Documents shortcut again and then scrolling
usually makes it crash, sometimes just when the mouse focus moves back
to the file list. The traceback is always the same.

Right, the traceback. Pasted below. To get this level of detail, I had
to rebuild the libgnomeui package unoptimized... before doing that,
there were a couple levels which were showing optimized out for some
variable names.

I did spend some time poking around in the debugger but I didn't
actually find the bug. The memory management in the file chooser is
pretty intricate. gtk_file_folder_gnome_vfs_dispose() is called twice
for each folder object being freed. In the first call most of the values
are freed but the object itself is freed later in an idle callback. So
it's a little tricky to figure out which caller is freeing the structure
that is still being referenced in another folder's hash.

It was already installed when I got the last backtrace.

I think the problem may be that the symbols we need are actually in gtk,
but in modules which are in subdirectories which don't have symbols in
libgtk2.0-0-dbg .

Hmm, that's not what I expected... I'll install the debug package for
libgnomeui and try again.

[Bug 58962] Re: User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time

2006-09-06 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Got some debug info installed, though not quite enough. The dbg package
for libgtk-2.0 doesn't seem to include some of the module subdirectories
so I can't see what's going on in libgnome-vfs.so. Traceback with
partial symbols below.

What I can see is that we seem to be crashing while trying to update the
icon for the first file in the Documents folder. Looks like the hash
table we are looking in is bogus.

After looking in the debugger and speculating a bit, I can make it crash
on my account sometimes. (Not as consistently as on my wife's account.)
Seems to depend on using a largish font-- e.g. Bitstream Vera Sans Roman
12-- and having more than one screenful of files in the Documents
folder.

[Bug 58962] User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time

2006-09-04 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Public bug reported:

On one of my home machines this crash affects my wife's account but not
mine. Any application which uses GNOME file dialogs will crash when she
accesses a file dialog -- open or save. Observed with gnome, gaim, gimp,
openoffice.org. Workaround for the last one is to use OOO's own file
dialogs, but for native GNOME applications it's not that simple. We did
come up with the workaround of launching a VNC session in which she has
an xterm and metacity and gimp, but nothing else-- and in there GIMP
works fine with the file dialogs.

Possibly related to 53355, but much more widespread than just firefox.
Also we use regular Ubuntu Dapper, not kubuntu. The latest dapper
updates have been applied... for example gtk+20 package version is
2.8.20-0ubuntu1.

Traceback from gdb session in which I (using my wife's account) launched
gedit and picked Open:

[Bug 58962] Re: User-specific: Gnome file dialogs crash every time

2006-09-04 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Looks like I left out some machine information: the machine is using the
i386 install (Pentium III 866MHz coppermine). Graphics card is an old
nvidia card, not using the proprietary driver at the moment. The exact
card probably doesn't matter because the crash reproduces in a VNC
session as long as gnome-session is run.

Also in looking for related bugs which might render this a duplicate I
saw some mention of file permissions in the user's home directory. I did
find some files owned by root in some subdirectories, and chown'd them
to my wife's account, but it didn't help.
