[Bug 1951491] [NEW] Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup
Public bug reported: I just upgraded from hirsute to impish using do-release-upgrade. On the upgraded system, I can't run either firefox or chromium (both of which worked fine under hirsute). Both fail with: /user.slice/user-NNN.slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup where NNN is my uid With firefox, I was able to fix the problem with: snap remove --purge firefox apt purge firefox apt install firefox Now firefox works. But I tried the same thing substituting chromium- browser for firefox, and it didn't help: chromium fails with the same error message. I guess there must be something left over from the hirsute version of snapd that isn't getting noticed or cleared by the impish version? Someone suggested this might be related to bug 1850667, but that bug is marked fixed as of a couple months ago, and I just did this upgrade today. [Bug 1914555] Re: cal should report today
The cal man page says it highlights unless -h is specified, but it turns out that only applies to ncal, not cal, since -h isn't in the Synopsis lines for plain cal, and cal -h is an error. Highlighting was apparently turned off deliberately: see upstream https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=904839 with this diff: https://salsa.debian.org/meskes/bsdmainutils/-/blob/master/debian/patches/cal_highlight.diff but if I apt source ncal on Ubuntu 20.10, the source doesn't have debian/patches/cal_highlight.diff and if I build it with dpkg-buildpackage, it doesn't have the behavior: it highlights even if I make a symlink to it and call it as "cal". [Bug 1912677] Re: autogenerated entries for other Ubuntu systems use wrong root filesystem, unbootable
Wow, really? But if multiple Linux partitions (common since the days of LILO) are discouraged now, why is os-prober searching for Linux distros on unmounted partitions and adding them to grub.cfg? If it's just for Windows and anything else isn't supported, maybe it should only add Windows installs. I don't mind adding grub stanzas by hand for distros on other partitions. But automatically added grub entries that are wrong and won't boot just clutter the boot menu, making it hard to tell which are the working entries. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1912677 Title: autogenerated entries for other Ubuntu systems use wrong root filesystem, unbootable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/1912677/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1912677] [NEW] autogenerated entries for other Ubuntu systems use wrong root filesystem, unbootable
Public bug reported: On my disk I have two partitions that are root filesystems for two releases, Focal and Groovy: Groovy 20.10 is on /dev/nvme0n1p33ac2446d-ae7c-4975-b736-44b1084266de Focal 20.04 is on /dev/nvme0n1p44ff7a630-0e7e-4427-aa9e-513bcae849c3 If I run update-grub2 from Groovy, it detects the Focal partition and generates this entry for it: menuentry 'Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS (20.04) (on /dev/nvme0n1p4)' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'osprober-gnulinux-simple-4ff7a630-0e7e-4427-aa9e-513bcae849c3' { insmod part_gpt insmod ext2 if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 4ff7a630-0e7e-4427-aa9e-513bcae849c3 else search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 4ff7a630-0e7e-4427-aa9e-513bcae849c3 fi linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.4.0-52-generic root=UUID=3ac2446d-ae7c-4975-b736-44b1084266de ro text initrd /boot/initrd.img-5.4.0-52-generic } Note how the menu correctly says it's on p4, and gives the right UUID there and in the search --fs-uuid lines, but then in the actual linux kernel line, it uses root=UUID=3ac2446d-ae7c-4975-b736-44b1084266de, the wrong partition. If I try to boot from that menuentry, the boot fails. At one point I'm fairly sure saw a message about not being able to find its initrd flash by, but I wasn't able to capture that message. Eventually it gets to a single-user prompt, and at that point if I scroll back, here are the warnings (yellow) and errors (red) captured in the scrollback: UNSUPP Starting of Executable File Format File System Automount Point not supported FAILED Failed to mount /boot/efi DEPEND Dependency failed for Local File Systems If I give the root password and then type mount, it has /dev/nvme0n1p3 (the Groovy root) mounted on /, not p4 (the Focal root it should be using). I filed bug 1842116 on graphicsmagick, haven't yet filed a similar bug on imagemagick. But it turns out (after rewriting my resizing script) that this also applies to files scaled by PIL. [Bug 1893289] [NEW] convert -scale makes file with EXIF in a place that exifautotran can't read
Public bug reported: This comes from Ubuntu bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libjpeg9/+bug/1842116 which references Debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=947182 Start with a JPEG image, say from a camera, that has an Orientation tag other than 0: $ jhead dsc00902.jpg | grep Orientation Orientation : rotate 90 Scale it smaller: $ convert dsc00902.jpg -scale 1024 dsc00902sm.jpg The scaled file still has an Orientation tag: $ jhead dsc00902sm.jpg | grep Orientation Orientation : rotate 90 Now try to use exifautotran to rotate it and set the orientation to 0: $ exifautotran dsc00902sm.jpg $ jhead dsc00902sm.jpg | grep Orientation Orientation : rotate 90 The orientation still specifies rotation. This is apparently because convert put the APP1 marker in a place that libjpeg-turbo-progs considers invalid (see the Debian bug linked at the top of this report). Indeed, if I use hexdump to look at the beginning of dsc00902sm.jpg: 000 d8ff e0ff 1000 464a 4649 0100 0101 5e01 010 5e01 e1ff cbbb 7845 6669 4949 The e1ff that specifies the APP1 (EXIF) doesn't occur until 20 bytes in. If I use hexdump on the original image from the camera: 000 d8ff e1ff cbbb 7845 6669 4949 002a APP1 is right after the SOI, where exifautotran wants it (and exifautotran works on that file). I'm not conversant enough with the JPEG standard to have an opinion whether the libjpeg-turbo-progs maintainer is right to insist on APP1 being immediately after SOI. I think this may be a newly introduced requirement from exifautotran. But it's frustrating not to be able to use convert and exifautotran together in a script. THis applies to both graphicsmagick and imagemagick. I'm not sure if I should file a duplicate bug for imagemagick. [Bug 1842116] Re: jpegexiforient does not reliably detect EXIF orientation
Interesting. But my images still have the Orientation tag, as shown by the jhead | egrep commands I listed. So maybe imagemagick and graphicsmagick (I tried both, same result) are writing the Orientation tag in the wrong place, and if jpegexiforient isn't going to be fixed, maybe I should be filing bugs on both imagemagick and graphicsmagick? I'm also a bit curious why this only appeared recently. I've been using convert and exifautotran for many years, and they've worked fine together in the past. Since that Debian bug is from December 2019, maybe exifautotran only recently started enforcing this requirement. If I understand https://dev.exiv2.org/projects/exiv2/wiki/The_Metadata_in_JPEG_files, SOI should be 0xFF, 0xD8 and APP1 should be 0xFF, 0xEn. The beginning of one of my scaled files in hexdump is: 000 d8ff e0ff 1000 464a 4649 0100 0101 5e01 010 5e01 e1ff cbbb 7845 6669 4949 so the d8ff (SOI) is right at the beginning, and the e1ff is in the second line. In the original image from the camera, the first line looks like: 000 d8ff e1ff cbbb 7845 6669 4949 002a so indeed, APP1 is right after the SOI. That page also says: In theory, Exif APP1 is recorded immediately after the SOI marker (the marker indicating the beginning of the file). However, this leads to the incompatibility between the Exif and JFIF standards because both of them specify that their particular application segment (APP0 for JFIF, APP1 for Exif) must be the first in the image file. In practice, most JPEG files contain a JFIF marker segment (APP0) that precedes the Exif APP1. This allows older readers to correctly handle the format JFIF segment, while newer readers also decode the following Exif segment, being less strict about requiring it to appear first. This way will not affect the image decoding for most decoders, but poorly designed JFIF or Exif parsers may not recognize the file properly. But presumably the Debian libjpeg-turbo-progs maintainer would disagree. Sigh. I'll file imagemagick and graphicsmagick bugs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1842116 Title: jpegexiforient does not reliably detect EXIF orientation To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libjpeg9/+bug/1842116/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1842116] Re: jpegexiforient does not reliably detect EXIF orientation
Still a problem in 20.04. I'm not using -perfect. A way to reproduce this is to start with a JPG image from a camera, then scale it down using GraphicsMagick (this happens starting with JPGs from either a Sony or Canon camera). Like this: $ convert dsc00902.jpg -scale 1024 dsc00902sm.jpg $ jhead dsc00902*.jpg | grep Orientation Orientation : rotate 90 Orientation : rotate 90 $ exifautotran dsc00902*.jpg Executing: jpegtran -copy all -rotate 90 dsc00902.jpg $ jhead dsc00902*.jpg | grep Orientation Orientation : rotate 90 $ jhead dsc00902*.jpg | egrep '(File name|Orientation)' File name: dsc00902.jpg File name: dsc00902sm.jpg Orientation : rotate 90 $ jhead -autorot dsc00902sm.jpg Modified: dsc00902sm.jpg $ jhead dsc00902*.jpg | egrep '(File name|Orientation)' File name: dsc00902.jpg File name: dsc00902sm.jpg So after exifautotran dsc00902*.jpg, the original full-sized Sony JPEG was rotated, but not the smaller version I'd created using convert -scale from GraphicsMagick: it just silently failed. But jhead -autorot was able to successfully rotate the scaled image. [Bug 1876212] Re: audacity (with libwxgtk3.0-gtk3) doesn't draw on non-gnome systems
** Description changed: Audacity doesn't work here on either focal or eoan, because the main section of the window (where the waveform should show up and where you click to make selections) doesn't draw at all, as if it's never getting expose events. I'm using the Openbox window manager, not the Gnome desktop. I'm seeing - the same behavior mentioned for the i3 window on arch manager in + the same behavior mentioned for the i3 window manager on arch in https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=391004#p391004 and I've seen reports of it happening in other WMs as well. I'll attach a screenshot, but really the report in that audacity forum post covers it. So why am I reporting it as an Ubuntu bug instead of upstream audacity? Because according to that report and a few others I've seen, and most of the build documentation for audacity (which mostly recommends using gtk2 rather than gtk3), this is a wx-gtk3 problem: compiling audacity with wx-gtk2 instead of wx-gtk3 fixes the problem. I have not been able to verify this, because although I've been able to build audacity from source against libwxgtk3.0-gtk3 (the problem still occurs), focal doesn't provide a wx-gtk2 option, and I haven't managed to get wxWidgets to build for either gtk2 or gtk3. [Bug 1876212] [NEW] audacity (with libwxgtk3.0-gtk3) doesn't draw on non-gnome systems
Public bug reported: Audacity doesn't work here on either focal or eoan, because the main section of the window (where the waveform should show up and where you click to make selections) doesn't draw at all, as if it's never getting expose events. I'm using the Openbox window manager, not the Gnome desktop. I'm seeing the same behavior mentioned for the i3 window on arch manager in https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?p=391004#p391004 and I've seen reports of it happening in other WMs as well. No one seems to understand what the core problem is that makes audacity fail to draw under wx-gtk3 in some window managers, just that it happens (which makes audacity completely unusable). But if wx-gtk2 was available, audacity built against that might well work for everyone. [Bug 1865056] [NEW] Fritzing wrapper ignores command-line arguments
Public bug reported: Fritzing is implemented as a wrapper that does: cd /usr/share/fritzing/parts exec /usr/bin/fritzing.real That means that any arguments, like -h, are ignored. It would be better if the second line was: exec /usr/bin/fritzing.real $@ (or $* or whatever your preference is). Any chance Ubuntu could update to Fritzing 0.9.4? 0.9.3 has some annoying bugs, like ignoring the -f argument. [Bug 1421808] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort() from AbortServer() from FatalError("EnterVT failed for screen %d\n") from xf86VTEnter() from WakeupHandler()
This is happening pretty often to me in Eoan (system info uploaded in bug 1852158 if it might help). I do often use an external monitor, but the crash seldom happens if I suspend with the external monitor as Vlad described. For me, it's more common that I sleep with the external monitor connected, disconnect, wake up and run a script that uses xrandr to enable the laptop display, work for a while, sleep, and then maybe on one of the next 2-3 wakeups (still on the laptop display), the screen will stay black, and when I try to switch VTs to try to get it back, X crashes. [Bug 1853879] [NEW] Dell E310dw: Default driver doesn't work, driverless fails on sides=two-sided-long-edge
Public bug reported: Dell E310dw printer which worked well on 19.04 has problems in 19.10: First, I went through the CUPS web interface to add the printer. The interface gave me a choice of two entries with the same name plus one with "driverless" added. I chose the first entry (not driverless) and completed adding the printer. On the Printers page, the Dell was now listed. When I tried "Print Test Page", I got many pages each containing a single line of symbols. I deleted the printer in the web interface, intending to start again and choose the second option. But after I did Delete Printer, CUPS took me back to the Printers page which now listed: Dell_Printer_E310dw@DELL316BAA.localDell Printer E310dw, driverless, cups-filters 1.25.11 So I clicked on that printer and tried Print Test Page, which worked. So then I tried a duplex print (which is really what I need this morning): lp -o sides=two-sided-long-edge -o collate=true -d Dell_Printer_E310dw@DELL316BAA.local filename.pdf It printed the PDF 2-sided, but with the sides flipped around the short edge, as if it was a landscape print. I tried the same command with sides=two-sided-short-edge and it flipped the same way. So sides is handling duplex but ignoring which edge is supposed to be used, and defaulting to landscape which I'd guess is less commonly what people want. This is all using what's built into Ubuntu. I haven't yet downloaded any extra drivers from Dell's site since Ubuntu claims to have a driver for the printer, and I'm pretty sure it was working in 19.04 (I may still have a working 19.04 to check that, if it would help). [Bug 1852158] [NEW] Xorg black screen on resume, and VT switch crashes with "EnterVT failed for screen 0"
Public bug reported: Every now and then, maybe one time out of 8, resuming from suspend gives me a black screen, no X. If I try ctrl-alt-F7, I see a VT with a _ on it, no X or login prompt. If I try ctrl-alt-F1, F2, F2 or F4, X crashes, every time. I've collected X logs from the last two times this has happened; both times, there's a message near the end: EnterVT failed for screen 0 I found a similar but not identical upstream bug: that might be related: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109668 There's also a Redhat bug that looks related and might have helpful info: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1662057 Machine is a Levono Carbon X1 with Intel graphics (hopefully ubuntu-bug attached the relevant info). [Bug 1849587] Re: apt-file doesn't find anything
Someone on #ubuntu suggested it might be due to the lack of a Contents- amd64.gz in the eoan release, mentioned in https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2019-October/040832.html If true, might that explain why it works for some searches and not for other? [Bug 1117499] Re: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring
I just upgraded to ringtail (from pangolin, not quetzal) and I'm seeing frequent firefox hard freezes, where I have to kill the process. (It is killable, though.) It's not related to youtube or flash; most often it happens when I'm visiting a new page. The problem isn't part of Ubuntu's firefox build, because I'm using Firefox 20.0 from mozilla.org. It's as if there's some underlying networking library that used to be asynchronous that in raring is now blocking the process. Curiously, I'm also on an X201, though it's hard to believe this would be specific to a single model laptop. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1117499 Title: killall -9 firefox fails to work in raring To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1117499/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It happens with multiple .xls files, and still happens if I save to .gnumeric, quit, open file.gnumeric, change one cell, click Save, then click the x to close the window. [Bug 1070622] Re: Save As Dialog Not Coming Up
We had this problem at a local Ubuntu Hour tonight -- a new user showed up who was trying to figure out how to export a spreadsheet from LibreOffice to XLS format. In LibreOffice Calc he brought up Export (the dialog appeared), didn't see an XLS option, cancelled the dialog, then tried Save as and no dialog appeared. From then on, neither Save as nor Export did anything at all -- no dialog. Could this possibly be related to unity's moving of the menus? In the UI, it would be helpful to the user to know it's okay to click Skip. When I started, it showed me a list of tests, and I tried to turn off tests I knew were irrelevant (like firewire), but it gave me a warning that if I turned off any tests at all, my results wouldn't be uploaded. So I was very reluctant to click Skip, and even now am not sure whether Skipping a few tests invalidated my results. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1029113 Title: checkbox-qt issues running on nonstandard desktops To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/checkbox/+bug/1029113/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1029113] Re: checkbox-qt issues running on nonstandard desktops
Sorry, I never got the mail from launchpad, so I didn't know you'd requested info, and unfortunately I don't have access to the machine I was using then. I'm pretty sure it had dbus, but probably not hal and other related services, and definitely no automount. I just tried it on a different machine (running pangolin) and the SD card test worked, and a lot of the other problems were gone too. The biggest problems I had this time around was it wanting to test hardware I don't have (firewire, CF reader, an MMC card in the SD slot) and the did a notification come up? Sorry, I didn't answer because I never got the notification for the question somehow. This might not be specific to empathy: I see the same issue in xchat and weechat. [Bug 900550] Re: mtp-probe missing from libmtp build for Natty (1.0.6-2)
There's still a deprendency problem, though. I've always gotten three /lib/udev/mtp-probe ... no such file or directory messages at boot time, and still do. apt-file says /lib/udev/mtp-probe is part of libmtp-runtime, which I do not have installed; but apparently I do have whatever package is querying for mtp-probe at boot time. (This system was initially installed as a cmdline system, then other packages added. It's not a gnome/unity system.) What package is generating those boot-time warnings? Looks like it might be coming from /lib/udev/rules.d/69-libmtp.rules which belongs to package libmtp-common (which is installed), which apparently I got by installing vlc. Looks like libmtp-common needs a dependency on libmtp-runtime ... or else the mtp-probe lines in 69-libmtp.rules should be made conditional on whether mtp-probe actually exists. (vlc works fine, so whatever mtp- probe would have been doing, it's apparently not needed here.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/900550 Title: mtp-probe missing from libmtp build for Natty (1.0.6-2) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libmtp/+bug/900550/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1029113] [NEW] checkbox-qt issues running on nonstandard desktops
Public bug reported: I'm not sure if ubuntu-friendly cares about collecting information from systems that aren't running the standard Unity/Gnome desktop, but in case you do, I encountered some minor problems trying to run it on my relatively lightweight Openbox setup: - Missing package dependency on python-dateutils (that's a real bug, so I reported it separately). - The automatic SD card test didn't work, just sat there forever. I guess it was waiting for some kind of automount service to do something with the card. It didn't time out after 10 seconds as it said it would, either. After a minute or two of waiting to see if it would do something, I gave up and clicked Yes (since Ubuntu does handle the SD card reader hardware, hooray). - Same for the automatic USB stick test -- nothing happened after I inserted the stick, so after a while I clicked Yes. - The wireless test was greek to me since it's all based on wording that presumably appears on the standard desktop. I wasn't sure exactly what was being tested. I clicked Yes since wireless more or less works (though it's flaky and seldom connects on the first try, and I have to retry several times no matter what software package I use to make the connection). - When I reviewed the results before uploading, I discovered that a lot of tests had failed because of missing packages like alsa-base. I would have been happy to install these packages if I'd known they were needed, and re-run the tests, but there's no way to know about the failures until the whole suite of tests is finished. Maybe an optional status window I could look at so I could see when things were failing due to something I could fix? - At the end, I guess (hope) it sent the information correctly, but there wasn't any feedback, so I'm not sure and have no idea how to find out. It would be very helpful if it printed Uploading results ... and Results uploaded successfully! or something like that. In general, there wasn't much status info about when it was busy vs. when I needed to do something. (And the status bar, dark blue on dark grey, is almost invisible even when it's present.) - After a few minutes I gave up waiting and clicked the windowmanager 'x' to close the window. At exit, it printed /usr/bin/checkbox-qt: line 26: 6085 I/O possiblepython $CHECKBOX_SHARE/run $@ $CHECKBOX_SHARE/configs/$(basename $0).ini [2] + exit 157 checkbox-qt - General UI comment: I found it confusing trying to guess when I was supposed to click Yes or No versus when I was supposed to click Next to skip a test (e.g. firewire, which this laptop doesn't have), especially since Next is in a completely different place from Yes and No. It would be helpful if tests gave suggestions like If you don't have firewire, please click Next. [Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering
Not fixed here. I upgraded the Vaio to Oneiric yesterday and am seeing font corruption after running it for about 2.5 hours this morning with several suspends. I'm also seeing the i915 module loaded in oneiric. I can't test what module it used in natty (replaced that partition in the upgrade) but Debian Squeeze, which also shows the problem, loads i915 just like oneiric does. I'm not convinced using lots of fonts makes a difference -- I've seen it when I wasn't doing much more than rehearsing/presenting a talk, with only a few fonts on the slides. I think running for a while is more important (usually several hours, though once or twice I've seen it sooner than that). Suspending may be relevant; I've never seen corruption in a run where I didn't suspend at least once, but it's rare that I have my laptop running that long without suspending. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/782855 Title: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/782855/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering
I see the problem almost (but not quite) exclusively in browsers (both firefox and webkit-based, though I don't run chrome on that machine); never in simple apps like xterm or emacs, or in gimp. Once it starts manifesting, its form will persist (e.g. if two lines of pixels are missing from lowercase b, then that will always be the case) through zooming, moving the browser window, reloading, opening new tabs, etc. However, if I quit firefox and restart it, I'll see a different pattern (e.g. it might be G and x mis-drawn now, rather than b) and that will persist through that run of firefox (but new letters might eventually start being affected as well). Once it starts, there's no chance of quitting and restarting to get a browser that has NO damaged letters; but sometimes I can get one where the bad letters are less common ones so I can still read pages for a while and can postpone rebooting.

Is it just that hp-clean doesn't support the Deskjet F4280 model? hp-clean -i -g says debug: Device URI usb://HP/Deskjet%20F4200%20series?serial=CN98Q5Z1XF05BR is invalid/unknown (I didn't give it that device-uri -- hp-clean found it, either from CUPS or from querying USB). If it's that the model can't clean its print heads, is there any chance you could make the error message a little clearer? No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality. sounds like it couldn't find the printer at all, leading to a lot of wasted time trying to solve the wrong problem. [Bug 782855] Re: missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering
I have a theory that this may be related to heat. I almost never see bad fonts immediately after booting, but after a long session where the fan has been on a lot, the fonts will get worse and worse. If I suspend for a while, sometimes they get better, but I have seen corrupted fonts immediately upon resuming from suspend, so I'm not entirely convinced. I should stress that this doesn't happen in Lucid, so even if it's heat releated, it's definitely caused by a software change.

[Bug 782855] [NEW] missing pixels (horizontal lines) in font rendering
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Since upgrading from Lucid to Natty, font rendering in firefox and some other apps is buggy. Certain letters in certain fonts will be missing pixels from horizontal lines through certain letters. For instance, in the screenshot I'm about to attach from this bug report, all the 'o' characters are missing a line through the center, and 'n' are missing a line a little below center. It's different every time: if I restart firefox, different letters will be affected. Graphics is Intel 915GM (on a Sony Vaio TX650). I don't know that it's the X driver at fault, but most people who see the problem seem to think that it's related to the video driver rather than the font rendering libraries. Changing my set of installed fonts or changing to a different default browser font can make the problem better or worse, but never makes it go away entirely.
