[Bug 2069150] Re: Gedit/Text editor have huge ram and cpu usage which leads to crash when Preferences openned.

2024-09-18 Thread Alan Lord
Just installed a brand new 24.04 on a new laptop. All seems OK apart
from when I try to open preferences of Gedit. After a few seconds get
the wait or force quit message. If I don't force quit asap then it
causes whole system to hang. And I couldn't ALT+Fn to a terminal screen
to see what is happening either.

[Bug 1507964] [NEW] VNC/Spice console is unusably slow

2015-10-20 Thread Alan Lord
Public bug reported:

As requested by Christopher M. Penalver I am reporting a new bug. This
is basically the same as the bug 582145.

Using virt-manager to manage our remote KVM virtual machines (Mostly
these are running Ubuntu server 14.04) is unusably slow.

The screen takes ages to redraw and makes entering commands tedious.

I have tried many different permutations of Display and Video parameters
with no noticeable difference.

[Bug 582145] Re: Virtual guests' console is unusably slow due to framebuffer usage

2015-10-19 Thread Alan Lord
Still a big issue.

We run a 14.04 Host on the bare-metal, with 14.04 guests. From my remote
Ubuntu 15.04 desktop the virt-manager windows are pretty useless.

Have tried various combinations of spice and VNC and graphics options in
the virt-manager guest configuration but it seems to make little or no
difference.

[Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-09-18 Thread Alan Lord
Nothing I've tried seems to resolve the issue.

I've now installed gnome-session-flashback and run the Metacity variant
which is working fine.

When running Unity compiz eats > 100% cpu most of the time... Drag a
window and it shoots up. Moving windows around the screen is unusable.

[Bug 1302416] Re: deja-dup monitor was taking 6GB of memory

2014-09-12 Thread Alan Lord
deja-dup-monitor is killing my laptop every morning! I do not have
Chrome-Remote-Desktop installed, nor do I need it as my backups are
handled differently. Am on 14.04 LTS up-to-date and have only recently
started seeing this issue.

Why do we need this daemon if we are not using the backup solution? It
shouldn't be installed by default surely?

2014-09-04 Thread Alan Lord
Since an update this morning all has been OK on 14.04. But this morning
my load average is running at > 4 mostly and it's almost all compiz.
System has become very slow.

Can I fallback to a simpler display system for the time being? - I need
this for work...

[Bug 1015920] [NEW] Icon in launcher reverts to the "?"

2012-06-21 Thread Alan Lord
Public bug reported:

I installed Gcolor2 yesterday from the Software Centre and a
representative icon appeared in my launcher.

The following morning (after a PC shutdown and restart overnight) the
icon is not there any more and it is replaced by the grey box with a "?"
in it.

Clicking that launcher icon still starts gcolor2 but the icon remains
the default grey "?" one.

[Bug 674489] [NEW] [Realtek ALC888] ALSA test tone not correctly played back

2010-11-12 Thread Alan Lord
Public bug reported:

I have sound but only seemingly on two speakers.

I have a Phillips 5.1 Surround system which worked fine on 10.04.

On 10.10, if I configure the Sound Preferences for 5.1 + Stereo Mic the
Front Left and Right sound emanates from the sub woofer only. Front
Centre and Rear Right make no sound, and the sub-woofer comes out of the
woofer.

If I configure for 7.1 + Stereo in, the Front left & right again sound
from the woofer, front centre seems to work properly. Rear left and the
sub woofer both come from the woofer and rear right is silent.

With Analogue Stereo, I get sound from the centre speaker (when clicking
the left speaker test) and from the woofer when clicking on the right
speaker.

Skype audio is also totally broken. It was fine in 10.04 but now I hear
no noise at all from skype.

#12 The link you refer to is for issues with ATI graphics cards.

I am not sure if that is the same or a different bug to this one which
is for intel Core i3 & what looks like Core i5 chips.

If you have a DVI or HDMI output these seem to work fine. The problem
appears only on the VGA output.

[Bug 525883] Re: Java applet audio with pulseaudio broken (local apps likely broken)

2010-10-12 Thread Alan Lord
Sounds like the same problem in 10.10 for me.

Last week (on 10.04) I attended a Webex - Java - webinar on OpenERP.
Audio was fine.

This week, I attempted to join a further webinar from the same company
again via webex. I am now running a fresh 10.10 64bit Desktop install.

The conference loads OK but sound fails to work. When I try to join the
audio I get the following message:

"The Audio Device is Unaccessible Now"

Trying a simple java audio device
http://www.roseindia.net/java/example/java/applet/PlaySoundApplet.html
also fails to produce any audio but no error messages to the user.

I tried adding a "Policy" as above, but this didn't seem to make any
difference. The statement I added was:

// Added by me to try and fix broken audio in Webex.
// Link to source: https://lists.launchpad.net/openjdk/msg02992.html

[Bug 614238] Re: Intel Core i3 External Monitor Wavy Output

2010-08-07 Thread Alan Lord
Further update. I went out and bought an HDMI cable as my new TV has
HDMI.

I've just booted my laptop on the current Lucid kernel and plugged it
into my TV using HDMI. The supported screen resolutions are detected and
the display on the TV is rock solid.

So it looks like it's a VGA output issue.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 600407] Re: Wavy Video with Core i3 and i915

2010-08-07 Thread Alan Lord
I found a 2.6.31-13 Karmic kernel image in http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and tried that.

Unfortunately the wavyness was still present.

The whole desktop also locked-up shortly after logging in so it wasn't
much of a test I'm afraid. Booted into the Maveric kernel and disabled
Compiz. Then rebooted back into the 2.6.31 kernel. The desktop no longer
locks up but the external display still has the wavyness.

One other point to note is that neither kernel is correctly detecting
the external monitor via EDID. The maximum resolution I can set for the
external monitor is 1360x768. My monitor is a native 2048x1152 Samsung
2343BW. Although the wavyness also occurs on an external 1024x768
projector too.

Any other suggestions to help track this down?

2010-08-06 Thread Alan Lord
Would like to add a comment.

On our Samsung R530 Laptops (Our company purchased 2 a few months ago),
we experience "wavy" output on the external VGA interface. The internal
LCD monitor of the laptop is perfect.

Have just reported this as bug# 614238

Since buying these laptops we have not been able to use an external
monitor or projector. A quick link to something telling me how to try
the old karmic kernel mentioned (2.6.31-16) on either Lucid or Maverick
would be helpful and I will test it.

[Bug 614238] [NEW] Intel Core i3 External Monitor Wavy Output

2010-08-06 Thread Alan Lord
Public bug reported:

A similar problem with Lucid was reported mainly by users of ATi Radeon
graphics hardware. I also experienced the "wavy" output in Lucid,
although the graphics h/w is the integrated intel that comes with the
Core i3 processors.

It is easy to reproduce. Just plug in an external monitor or projector.
The output is not stable/solid and has waves that make it unusable.

I tried the Maverick Alpha3 to see if it had been addressed in the
2.6.35 kernel but the problem is still apparent.

The LCD display of the Laptop is rock solid and sharp. This only affects
the external VGA from what I can tell. I do not have any hdmi devices to
test with so cannot confirm if the symptoms are just VGA or any external
monitor connection.

Similar bug reports from Lucid include: 537640, 541501, 557814, 562138
although these all seem to relate to the ATI chipsets, the description
of the problem sounds the same.

I am happy to try upstream kernels and build/patch/compile if necessary.

[Bug 537640] Re: [RV530] Video problem: External monitor wavy, unreadable. ati radeon [Needs pll quirk]

2010-08-05 Thread Alan Lord
See my comment #72.

I do not believe this bug just affects ATi. This is also affecting intel
Core i3 processors with integrated graphics.

I have just installed the Alpha3 of Maverick Meercat (2.6.35) this
evening to see if that exhibits the same, and unfortunately the wavy
output on the VGA is still present.

[Bug 93546] Re: [upstream] Openoffice.org Address data sources missing

2010-08-01 Thread Alan Lord
I am not sure that the openoffice.org bug & this one are the same issue.

In the Ubuntu OOo build I am not seeing any choices in the data source
tools for Mozilla/Netscape/Thunderbird etc.

I do not think this the same issue as not being able to read the new
address book format which came out with Thunderbird 3. I do not have any
choices to even try and connect to the Thunderbird AB.

Me too.

This is a very annoying and very long standing bug. But I am somewhat
surprised by how few people it seems to be affecting. Does this mean
either:

We have some weird configuration or Profile issue or,
It only affects those who use Thunderbird too or,
We are the only ones who notice or

[Bug 418499] Re: Option 225 3G USB Stick removal causes system lock

2010-05-21 Thread Alan Lord
Well, I used the 225 yesterday on my netbook with Lucid, yanked the
dongle out and the system worked as I'd expect, e.g. I got a
notification that my network connection had been disconnected and
everything else continued to operate.

So I guess this now resolved.

[Bug 537640] Re: [RV530] Video problem: External monitor wavy, unreadable. ati radeon [Needs pll quirk]

2010-05-10 Thread Alan Lord
I do not think this is Radeon/ATI related. I've just bought 2 Samsung
R530 laptops with Core i3 processores (integrated intel graphics). Am
also having severe wobble on the external output. Have just tried the
2.6.34-020634rc6-generic kernel with no change.

There appear to be several very similar bugs:

[Bug 541834] Re: radeon KMS: jittery output with dual head

2010-05-10 Thread Alan Lord
I have a Samsung R530 new laptop with the intel core i3 (integrated

the same problem.

[Bug 539350] Re: X does not behave properly with the -16 kernel in Lucid

2010-05-10 Thread Alan Lord
Also experiencing the external vga "wobble":
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/562138/comments/42

It appears to be frequency related, e.g. if I increase the frequency of
the VGA output from 60Hz to 70hz then the wobble gets faster...

Our machines are Intel Core i3 (Integrated Graphics) running the i915
driver. Am running the latest kernel from kernel.ubuntu.com:
2.6.34-020634rc6-generic but problem still present.

2010-05-10 Thread Alan Lord
I am experiencing the same problem but I have a brand new Samsung R530
Laptop with the intel Core i3 (+integrated graphics) so it is not Radeon
related. In fact we bought 2 and the problem is the same on both
machines. Running up-to-date Lucid.

I've tried various things mentioned here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes and am currently running
the 2.6.34-020634rc6-generic kernel. The "wobble" is still present on an
external monitor.

[Bug 427625] Re: privoxy not start at boot - karmic

2010-05-08 Thread Alan Lord
Running Lucid Lynx, found that firehol, dansguardian, privoxy stopped
working recently. Only error reported - in syslog - was dansgaurdian
unable to connect to proxy.

dansguardian[1741]: Error connecting to proxy

After updating Lucid this morning. Problem still apparent. privoxy
appears to be running however. I changed one line in the
/etc/privoxy/config file from:

listen-address localhost:8118
listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118

Restarted privoxy and it worked. Rebooted Ubuntu and it works.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-05-05 Thread Alan Lord
This is quite annoying. More so even that the missing tooltips!

I've a 2048x1152 23" monitor and grabbing the edge of windows in Lucid +
Ambiance is very tricky indeed. I didn't have this problem on Karmic, so
for me this is a regression.

I am amazed frankly that this got through QA as it will badly affect
many users - especially those with low-resolution mice, touchpads or
shaky hands.

[Bug 574945] Re: Eclipse hangs occasionally in Ubuntu Lucid

2010-05-05 Thread Alan Lord
I've just installed a completely fresh eclipse on a completely fresh
install of Lucid on a brand new Laptop. After adding in the eclipse-pde,
jdt and plugin-cvs packages from synaptic (these aren't installed from
the Software Centre by the looks of it), I was able to install eclipse
plugins from the eclipse repos.

However, the subversion plugin (SVN) for eclipse ends up in a deadlock
when I try and make a second commit. Strangely, the first time I commit
a change to my remote SVN repo it works. But if I make another edit and
try and submit, eclipse hangs. This was all working fine in 9.10 Ubuntu.

On this new laptop, I will remove the openjdk and install the sun-
java6-jdk to see if this fixes the issue.

[Bug 574945] Re: Eclipse hangs occasionally in Ubuntu Lucid

I'm getting similar problems this evening after updating my desktop from
Karmic to Lucid yesterday. Having read Benjamin's comment (#2) I checked
but only have the xulrunner-1.9.2 package installed.

I did have a sun-java5-jdk installed that didn't get removed by the
upgrade (although sun-java6 did!). I have now installed the sun-
java6-jdk package and will try this tomorrow. I have had problems in the
past with the openjdk when trying to get Alfresco to run so am somewhat
sceptical now.

[Bug 474475] Re: Multiple sites will not load or give a compression error message when using Dansguardian 2.10.1.1 with tinyproxy

2010-04-13 Thread Alan Lord
This is affecting me badly. I upgraded my Kid's PC last week from
Intrepid to Jaunty and now they are getting blank pages and invalid
compression errors. They can't get to bbc.co.uk (returns a blank page
sometimes or the home page works but CBBC/Cbeebies) fails.

I tried adding a Listen 0.0.0.0 to tinyproxy.conf but that made no
noticeable difference.

I tried using Privoxy but Dansguardian barfs at trying to connect to
port 8118 as it is "already in use".

If Privoxy works can someone provide a better description of the
configuration please?

In dansguardian.conf I had filterport = 8080 (for tinyproxy) and
changing this to 8118 fails as above.

There is also proxyport = 3128. I tried setting this to 8118 but then
was unable to connect to anything.

I would like to update my kids to Lucid soon but if this carries on I
might have to downgrade them back to Intrepid...

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips

2010-03-29 Thread Alan Lord
This is a bizarre decision.

I noticed the removal of the tooltips last week and was confused and
annoyed. It now requires several clicks to get to information that was
readily available just by hovering.

I think I understand the idea to simplify and reduce but this is
breaking something which was never broken IMHO. If you don't like where
the tooltips appear or how they are rendered then as someone else
mentioned earlier on, surely the *right* thing to do is to provide the
same functionality (with hover) but display the information using the
notification tool. That would work nicely (as long as there is a way of
prioritising events to be displayed if there is a queue).

Having to click is a retrograde step IMHO.

Lucid is starting to look like a bit of dog's dinner in the design dept.

[Bug 480815] Re: No record-signal from internal mic (Notebook, Sigmatel, HDA Intel)

2009-12-15 Thread Alan Lord
Am also having the same problem. Running up-to-date Karmic. I installed
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and rebooted but the mic is
still not working.

The audio output is also extremely quiet until I install alsamixer and
manually turn up the Master F setting. I also turned the mic gain up to
max but this doesn't seem to help.

I have a Clevo M67SU Laptop with similar sound h/w:

Definition Audio Controller) (rev 10)

[Bug 418499] [NEW] Option 225 3G USB Stick removal causes system lock

2009-08-25 Thread Alan Lord
Public bug reported:

Fully updated Ubuntu Karmic as of today (25/08/09 at 10:05 BST).

Hardware: Asus 1008HA

3G dongle: Option ICON 225 (Uses kernel module hso.ko)

Plugging in the USB stick and removing it without attempting to make a
connection does not cause the failure.

To cause failure, plug in the USB device, attempt to make a connection
in NM (it doesn't matter if the connection succeeds or not) then
disconnect using the NM interface. OK so far.

Upon removing the dongle, the entire system locks up.

FYI, these symptoms used to happen with the early versions of the hso
module prior to being included in the mainstream kernel tree in 2.6.27
IIRC. I tested this with all available Karmic kernels on my system:
2.6.31.3-generic, 2.6.31.4-generic, 2.6.31.5-generic, 2.6.31.6-generic,
2.6.31.7-generic, and the problem is the same. However, I am *pretty
sure* this did not used to happen a couple of weeks ago. Not much help I
know.

It is repeatable *every-time*. No mouse movement is possible, no
keyboard commands are accepted apart from doing Alt+SysRq REISUB will
cause a reboot.

I had an ssh connection into the device and was tailing
/var/log/messages. No output upon removal and the ssh connection is also
broken.

[Bug 401439] Re: T-Mobile web'n'walk Stick III (Option iCON 225) doesn't work (Karmic Koala)

2009-07-28 Thread Alan Lord
I can confirm this too. I use the Option 225 on Orange UK's contract
network. It works fine under Jaunty but there is breakage in the
detection in Karmic.

Have attached the output of possibly interesting logs for both
insertions and removals of the dongle. Will be happy to test potential
fixes.

[Bug 83587] Re: HP ScanJet 5300C doesn't work

2009-07-03 Thread Alan Lord
Hi,

I'm using an up-to-date Jaunty and have experienced the above problem
ever since switching to Linux.

However today I thought I'd try again.

Initially I had the same problems: Xsane identified the scanner but
would stall at about 25% and freeze.

I read through many of the older posts here and tried a couple of
things.

* I added myself (as a user) to the saned group.
* I installed gnome-scan to try something different (it worked to a fashion but
would crash often so I removed it).
* I used the sane-utils package to test for correct scanner detection
* I then rebooted (with the scanner connected and powered) and retried xsane
but adjusted the resolution from 150dpi to 300dpi.

Subsequently scanning worked. I scanned multiple pages and saved as both
png and pdf.

Work that one out...
