[Bug 70850] Re: [users-admin] show all users checkbox is gone and there is no way to view users with a UID of less than 1000

2009-11-01 Thread Allan Caeg
Any fix? I'm already on Karmic and it will be 2010 in a while. Just
kidding. Ranting won't help.

My problem is, on the Login Screen Settings dialog on Karmic, I can't
choose to log in automatically to my preferred user account because the
only one that appears is the one with the UID that's not less than 1000.
Enabling /apps/gnome-system-tools/users/show_all and doing

edit /etc/login.defs change UID_MIN 1000 to UID_MIN 500

edit /etc/gnome-system-tools/users/profiles changing each uid-min=1000
to uid-min=500

edit /etc/adduser.conf LAST_SYSTEM_UID=999 to 499 and FIRST_UID=1000 to
500 from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3531723postcount=6

didn't help as well.

[Bug 464535] [NEW] Battery monitor on tray says Laptop battery is fully charged all the time

2009-10-30 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

On Karmic, the battery monitor on the system tray says Laptop battery
is fully charged all the time. However, when I click it, the drop-down
entry would state the right battery charged percentage.

Also, even when my system is set to hibernate when the charge is
critically low, it just shuts down when the battery charge runs out. Is
this a connected issue or do I have to report another bug?

[Bug 68714] Re: Eclipse does not close (window disappears, process keeps running)

2009-10-15 Thread Allan
I've just confirmed that this problem still exists in my JJ AMD64
system. After removing at-spi and rebooting, for the first time in
months, Eclipse fully shut down the Sun JVM without me having to do a
manual kill -9. I've been running Eclipse Galileo 3.5, and just
upgraded to 3.5.1. This happened in both versions.

My present system information:

/usr/bin/java -version
java version 1.6.0_16
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode)

uname -a
Linux krumm 2.6.28-15-generic #52-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 9 10:48:52 UTC 2009 x86_64
GNU/Linux

[Bug 410886] Re: VMBuilder doesn't work with grub2

2009-10-15 Thread Iain Allan
Buddha,

You need to install grub version 1 if your Karmic install is using
grub2. VMbuilder will then be able to create an image but the next
problem is the image will not boot unless you manually install grub.
Grub seems to be unable to find the grub stage files.

[Bug 410886] Re: VMBuilder doesn't work with grub2

2009-10-14 Thread Iain Allan
I am seeing the same problem on Karmic with ubuntu-vm-builder and grub
not finding the stage1 grub file.

I converted the qcow2 image created by vmbuilder to raw and then mounted
the image to inspect the grub directory. It seems that the grub stage
files are actually in /boot/grub/i386-pc.

ubuntu-kvm/mnt/boot/
|-- System.map-2.6.31-14-generic-pae
|-- config-2.6.31-14-generic-pae

[Bug 18574] Re: /etc/environment lacks man page.

2009-10-14 Thread Allan
still in jaunty

Note: OpenBSD does not consider missing man pages on configuration files
to be minor, which is why I continue to enjoy sysadmin under OpenBSD
more so than Ubuntu.

This is a sysadmin papercut: a minor defect that could be easily fixed
which griefs nearly everyone who has to figure out a permanent place to
put JAVA_HOME from what I can tell reading the forums.

From https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables

/etc/environment - This file is specifically meant for system-wide
environment variable settings. It is not a script file, but rather
consists of assignment expressions, one per line. Specifically, this
file stores the system-wide locale and path settings.

Does not explain when this file is read, as per the original bug report.
And another thing. My preferred shell is zsh, not bash. It would be
nice if some of the docs were less bash specific.

[Bug 424643] Re: new state installed (manual) on synaptic

2009-10-07 Thread Allan MacKinnon
Bug still present in the Beta.

A recent update seemed to eliminate most of the entries (which match my
last post) but after rebooting they returned.

Re: [Bug 429982] Re: Bright orange scroll bar is highly distracting

2009-09-23 Thread Allan Caeg
I agree with the OP. I saw screenshots and it seems that the scrollbar can
be obtrusive. I think, having a colorized scrollbar is preferred for
subtle colors (like the blue on the default Clearlooks).
I think, it is the rationale why the scrollbars on Shiki aren't colorized.

[Bug 424643] Re: new state installed (manual) on synaptic

2009-09-21 Thread Allan MacKinnon
Was using an up-to-date Alpha 5

I tried changing the status of the packages under 'Manual' to
'Automatically Installed' by using the option in the 'Package' menu
entry.

For most of them they changed without a fuss. However a few packages
uninstalled key parts of the system. The only problematic packages I
managed to catch were:

ubuntu-desktop
ubuntu-minimal
ubuntu-standard

There are others as well that removed more than they should have but I
didn't bother remembering their names because the packages they asked to
remove seemed 'reasonable' to me at the time. However, the 3 listed
above will suggest you autoremove your entire system when their status
is changed to 'Automatically Installed' in Synaptic, especially ubuntu-
desktop.

[Bug 359009] Re: In gnome-keyboard-properties, layout options tab, Apply system-wide option is unclear

2009-09-03 Thread Allan Day
The 'Apply System-Wide' button has a couple of other problems:

 - it doesn't allow a user to see what the current system settings are
 - it is unclear which of the settings in the layout tab are applied to the
system-wide settings

Would it therefore be preferable to have a separate 'System keyboard
preferences' settings dialog instead of the current 'Apply System-Wide'
button? That way you would have an 'Edit system settings' button at the
bottom of the keyboard layout tab which would open another dialog.

Another question on this topic - how does the 'Reset to Defaults' button
relate to the system-wide settings? Are these 'Defaults' the same as the
'System-Wide' settings? If they are, consistent terminology should be
used.

Correct. Wired Connection.

lspci | grep -A3 Network controller produced no output :(

However,

sudo lshw -C network produced this:

  *-network UNCLAIMED

   vendor: Intel Corporation

Also, I saw something about the NVM not having the right checksum during

[Bug 415758] [NEW] Wine will not install Rosetta Stone

2009-08-19 Thread Allan Bogh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

I'm not sure if this has been submitted or can be resolved using
winetools. The output of the wine command is below. System is a AMD64
bit Ubuntu 9.04. Wine-1.1.27. The current workaround is to use Windows
in a Virtualbox instance. If the problem is an add-on to Wine that is
required, could Wine simply inform the user that a dependency is
required and allow them the opportunity to install it before continuing
execution?

 Hi Allan,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 275642

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
 results.

 Thanks in advance.

[Bug 404835] [NEW] Gwibber's asking for the GNOME keyring password seems to be unjustified

2009-07-26 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gwibber

Some users complain about Gwibber's asking for the GNOME keyring
password. I was among them until I realized what it was for.

This seems to be unjustified because GNOME keyring just shows the app
location gibberish. If asking for the password tells the user that it's
because Gwibber is accessing the saved username and password of the
user's microblogging accounts, the user would understand why the
password is being asked.

[Bug 367718] Re: Volume control and sound missing from Totem. All other video/music players work fine.

2009-07-19 Thread Allan Bogh
Please close this bug...

After doing several more searches I found this website (it's a RedHat
support forum): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449268

A user on it had similar problems with sound, but only with certain
video formats (Flash). This suggestion was made:

Comment #4 From Bastien Nocera 2008-06-02 05:26:42 EDT ---

Could you please try running gstreamer-properties, and setting the
default output to autodetect?

I then realized that even though every other application on my computer
was playing sound, Totem may be expecting a certain setting which is
preventing it from playing. I also realized that with other user's
sessions, like Root and Guest, that they have not had the sound
properties modified.

I reset the sound properties to autodetect like Bastien Nocera
recommended (I used gnome-sound-properties instead) and tested Totem
again. The sound works fine now.

In my opinion, this is still a bug that Totem does not use the preferred
sound output device as selected in gnome-sound-properties. It would
benefit Totem to have a sound option which could override the sound
properties as well. By doing so the sound on the computer could work
with the preferred device while Totem could be configured for something
completely different. A scenario would be if you have multiple sound
output devices.

[Bug 398041] [NEW] HPLib has start menu not found menu booting on Compaq Presario 1700 with Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 335905] Re: [g45] Playing Half-Life 2 in WINE causes forces a logout

2009-07-09 Thread Allan MacKinnon
Well, it's not forcing a logout on Karmic. The game is refusing to
start.

The partition I made for OS testing isn't large enough for Half-Life 2
and I'm not sure if other games will cause the same crash. Lemme
install StarCraft or something to my Jaunty partition and let me get
back to you. If they cause a crash too then I can use that to test
Karmic.

On Jaunty, StarCraft caused a logout once but only after I exited the

Oh, and the game I used in my last post (the one that wouldn't start)

Can't think of another game that will fit on 1.5GB that I can use to
test this. Steam games and most other modern games are so much larger

[Bug 367718] Re: Volume control and sound missing from Totem. All other video/music players work fine.

2009-06-17 Thread Allan Bogh
Wait. It's still a Totem issue because I don't know what to change on my
account to make Totem play sound.

People in other forums have said to add the user account to the audio
group and I already was a member of audio. I checked all the same
permissions checkboxes in the account window. Nothing seems to be
different, but Totem still has issues. If it was an audio group
permission issue then I would have expected Flash, MPlayer, and VLC to
adhere to the permission too.

What else could cause Totem to not play sound based on some user account
setting, possibly permissions?

Don't close this yet please until I come back and say it's fixed.

groups I'm a member of and here's the list:

adm dialout cdrom audio video plugdev lpadmin netdev admin sambashare
mythtv vboxusers

I have a test account with this list:

test adm dialout fax cdrom floppy tape audio dip video plugdev scanner
fuse

I made sure to check the little audio checkbox in the user properties
window for my user account. I also logged out and back in once I did so.
I know it's going to be something ridiculously simple now that I've
narrowed down the search, but I'm still at a loss. Any help would be
appreciated.

Amazing, no it doesn't happen in a guest session. So, that leads me to
the question, how do I erase the configuration data for my user
account's Totem setup so it'll rebuild it properly?

Thanks a lot for your kind support too.

Status in “nspluginwrapper” source package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: nspluginwrapper

nspluginwrapper crashed when loading firefox 3.0 with a bunch of tabs open
from last time. Many of the tabs contained arstechnica pages with embedded
flash; one of these (or possibly trying to load all of them at once) is

This seems to happen reliably when there are multiple flash objects, either

2009-06-13 Thread Allan Bogh
Rhythmbox works fine and tests in gstreamer-properties using ALSA and
PulseAudio output also work. It seems no other application has a problem
except Totem. This also affects Firefox though since it uses Totem for
playing mp3.

Maybe there's something else I can do? Wipe out Totem and reinstall it
using current sound configuration? I know this sounds bad since it's
like using a nuke to kill a mouse, but that's the mentality that Windows
provides.

[Bug 367718] Re: Volume control and sound missing from Totem. All other video/music players work fine.

2009-06-11 Thread Allan Bogh
Yeah. I just switched the default playback device to VLC and MPlayer
where available. VLC seems to work better than MPlayer to read malformed
files, but I like the players to be self contained and not open up 2
windows, like the control window and the playback window. This is why
Totem is nice, but if it doesn't play sound then it's pretty much
useless.

I assure you that my sound works fine right now. Other players work fine
with it, including MythTV, but only Totem refuses to work right. I've
removed all speakers except a simple 2.1 speaker system connected to the
green plug. I'm using HDA ATI SB (ALSA Mixer) in sound control since it
gives the most controls. Front mic is disabled, everything else is
active. Sound events sound playback is on the PulseAudio Sound Server.
Music and Movies are on HDA ATI SB ALC1200 ANalog (ALSA). Audio
conferencing is set to HDA ATI SB ALC1200 ANalog (ALSA) and ALSA. The
default mixer track is set to Capture: HDA ATI SB ALC1200 Analog
(PulseAudio).

I know some of these selections might not be correct, but the system
works and the mixer shows the right stuff.

I'm still not sure what causes it, but Totem worked before the upgrade
but now the sound button is unavailable (grayed out). No sounds play.
Nothing else has changed on my system except the unplugging and
rearranging of speaker systems, removing Microsoft's and using a
standard one. I'm not sure if it matters but Microsoft's system did have
a USB plug, so Totem might still be looking for that and ignoring any
other options I give it.

[Bug 377005] Re: Ubuntu is too attached to Canonical

2009-05-16 Thread Christopher Allan Webber
Mark,

Thanks for responding. Although, I notice that you did not respond
about the original point of Canonical developing proprietary software
(the implication being that this will continue).

I don't think I have much more to write about the subject than I have,
but at least we have confirmation on the state of things: Ubuntu and
Canonical will continue to be developed intertwined together, and
Canonical will continue to develop proprietary software. At least
that's settled.

[Bug 377005] Re: Ubuntu is too attached to Canonical

2009-05-15 Thread Christopher Allan Webber
So, I find it kind of interesting that this post hasn't been responded
by anyone despite it being a number of hours since it was posted. But
there has been some discussion about it on the autonomo.us mailing list,
that has ended with this:

Josh Berkus j...@agliodbs.com writes:
 Guys,

The Ubuntu community should decide if they want to be associated,
governed and ruled by a proprietary software company, and should appoint
non-Canonical people to all the key positions.

Or they could admit that Ubuntu is de facto controlled by Canonical
anyway and appoint Canonical people to all the key positions. :-)

I think that Ubuntu One was a poor choice of name for a variety of
reasons (not the least of which is that it's crappy marketing; the name
doesn't give you a clue what it does), but I also think it could have
been dealt with more diplomatically. Mark is a fairly easy guy to reach
 and he does listen.

Well... I have a hard time believing that this bug isn't being listened
to right now, so here's a shot at framing the conversation in a way that
maybe can promote some dialogue.

I think we're at a pivotal point in Ubuntu's (and Canonical's) history.
How this issue is addressed is going to determine how the community
reacts, and what kind of community Ubuntu continues to have.

So let's start with the community that Ubuntu presently has, and where
Canonical has been positioned in it. At this time of writing, Canonical
is *heavily* invested in Ubuntu... and vice versa. Indeed, that seems
to be the point.

Maybe not all users know about Ubuntu and Canonical's relationship.
Certainly many of the up and coming generation of Ubuntu users (which is
likely the same generation of users who have bought a GNU/Linux
netbook without even knowing that this is what they are running) may
have no clue.

But who has built the distribution, really? Well, of course there's the
roots that come from being a derivative of Debian. But what I'm talking
about is the many volunteers, the community organizers, the hackers, and
the Ubuntu Local teams that really run the machine. And I think most of
*this* part of the community is well aware of Canonical and its relation
to Ubuntu... or at least, what they thought it was.

I don't think this issue is going to go away. It certainly won't go
away as long as Ubuntu One is named Ubuntu One. But even if it was
renamed to UbuOne it wouldn't really go away... I think that that would
be just a change of makeup. The real issue will fester and likely
continue to fracture the Ubuntu community until we get a very clear
image of where things are going to go.

So, back to the email, was the naming of Ubuntu One an issue of bad
marketing? Hm, well I would say yes, it probably was. But what's
interesting about it is that it really brought the issue to a head in a
way that it might not have otherwise. It did so by taking a name that
people rallied around as a way of presenting a set of ideals (it has,
after all, the rather populist slogan of Linux for Human Beings) and
applying them to a product that broke those ideas. As Jim Campbell said
on Identi.ca:

If we go from having a closed desktop, to an open desktop that is
strongly linked to a closed cloud, what have we gained? #ubuntuone

(For reference, the URL for that is: http://identi.ca/notice/4276135 ...
and it is the most 'popular' message on Identi.ca at the time of
writing, so we shouldn't make the mistake that this point is going
unnoticed.)

So, there is a deeper issue here. Is this the future business model of
Canonical? Using its connection to the community to tie Ubuntu to a set
of proprietary services?

Once again, I am going to quote Jim:

@rockstar I agree that right now it is just basic file sharing across
desktops, but they plan to do more with it, it sets a bad precedent.

(as reference: http://identi.ca/notice/4277182)

So here we go. The timing on this is actually quite significant. Right
now, seeing the danger of subverting the free software movement by the
rise of proprietary web applications, the Autonomo.us group is trying to
campaign for the role of free network services. Nearly a year ago,
right around the time that the Franklin Street Statement was released
defining those ideas, Canonical announced that its proprietary
bugtracker Launchpad (which has been at the heart of Ubuntu) would be
free software. Right as the date of the release of that code is
approaching, Canonical announced a new web service... and that there
are currently no plans or roadmap to open-source the server software
part of Ubuntu One.

So the backlash that has been raised here should be of little surprise. Ubuntu
is not a Canonical project alone... it is built on the backs of community
members who have felt attachment to the ideas that Ubuntu, with its slogan
Linux for human beings, meant. Very few of the people who have done hard
work on this project are likely unaware that Canonical was hoping to make a
business

How can Jaunty users get Tango 0.8.90-2 for Jaunty? I googled and all I
see is icon-naming-utils.

[Bug 369606] Re: Computer wakes up to GDM from sleep. Session is not recovered

2009-05-14 Thread Allan Caeg
It may not have anything to do with pulseaudio.

I have intel graphics so I followed
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 . With the 2.6.29
kernel from the howto, the sleep problem is fixed. I hope it would be
fixed in the default kernel.

Thanks for your reply.

[Bug 374313] Re: Most icon themes don't have icons for notify-osd

2009-05-14 Thread Allan Caeg
I am aware of that folder. However, it is incomplete. I copied and
pasted the notification icons from the Human icon theme but Network
Connected icon still doesn't appear. I don't know what else doesn't
appear.

[Bug 374771] [NEW] First action choice for virtualbox machines is to copy to clipboard

2009-05-11 Thread Allan Caeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

With the virtualbox plugin, I run my virtual machines directly with
GNOME Do. However, the first action choice if a VM is selected is to
copy it to clipboard.

It would be better if the first choice is to start the VM followed by
other VM actions.
